[GCW] Monday Night Explosion - 9/5/05

Snabbit888Posted on 07/24/06 at 11:23:48

September kicked off with a bang in the nation's capital, as Monday Night Explosion hit the MCI Center in Washington, D.C.! Tonight's show is going to be a huge one with big matches such as Monty Brown taking on Rhyno, Elix Skipper and Low-Ki taking on AJ Styles and Bryan Danielson, Booker T vs. Randy Orton, and Edge defending the Television Title against "The Italian Stallion" Chuck Palumbo!

Match #1
Booker T (w/ Sharmell) vs. Randy Orton (w/ Bob Orton Jr.)
The night started out with a great contest between Booker T and Randy Orton. Orton, disappointed in not taking the World Heavyweight Title in the Elimination Chamber, is retooling his focus. It started a couple of weeks ago when Orton injured The Hurricane. This may have been the start to Orton's plans that he wanted, but it certainly took a wrong turn quickly when The Hurricane's big buddy Abyss took offense to it. Orton has been running scared ever since, sacrificing his own father's well-being a week ago. Orton wrestled a good match against Booker, but when he would have the advantage, his attention would turn toward the entrance way to make sure that Abyss wasn't coming. Orton's paranoia became so severe that he actually sent his father up the ramp halfway to get a better look. In doing this, Cowboy Bob didn't see Abyss come out through the crowd. Randy caught sight of him at the last second, and ran out of the ring, buzzing right past his father and getting counted out in the process.

Booker T defeated Randy Orton by countout in 0:06:12.
Rating: ** 1/4

Abyss chased after Randy, but when he got to Cowboy Bob, he took out his frustrations on him, nailing the elder Orton with a choke slam on the ramp! The medical staff ran out to check on Bob Orton Jr. after he was mauled by Abyss. Cowboy Bob's sacrifice once again allowed his son to make a hasty escape from the behemoth's wrath. Another beating like that though and Randy Orton isn't going to have any more protection.

ANGLE TELLS JBL HE HASN'T PAID HIS DEBT BACK YET
Kurt Angle was back with JBL, and he didn't look happy. The former Olympic champion told Layfield that since he didn't beat Brock Lesnar a week ago and Lesnar is still standing that JBL still owes him a favor. JBL disagreed, saying he did exactly what Angle wanted him to and they're now even. Angle told JBL to shut up and that he is running the shots, and said the favor will be repaid "when I damn well say so!" JBL was pissed and looking to respond, but Commissioner Tommy Dreamer interrupted them by getting in between them, and telling them that because of their actions a week ago, Angle and JBL would have to team up this week, taking on the World Tag Team champions, Eric Angle and Rob Van Dam, in a non-title match. Both men were furious - Angle for having to get in the ring with his brother again, and JBL because he really wants a title around his waist and that's not going to happen in a non-title bout. Dreamer concluded by telling them that they better spend the rest of the night getting ready.

Match #2
Petey Williams vs. "The Notorious K.I.D." Kid Kash
Kid Kash has his chance at winning the Cruiserweight Title from Frankie Kazarian at Retribution, but he had another monkey to get off his back as he took on Petey Williams, who has also been a thorn in his side for the past several weeks. Kash claims to have some backup for Retribution as he feels everyone has unfairly ganged up on him, but he didn't have that backup tonight, which allowed Kazarian to come down to ringside and mess with him a bit. Kazarian never actually made physical contact with Kash during the match, but he sure tried to distract him as much as possible. Petey seemed to be almost as distracted as he wanted to win this match on his own accord. After the Future had tripped Kash up, Petey Williams had enough and wiped Kazarian out with a plancha. Petey got back on the ring apron and jumped into the ring with a sunset flip attempt on Kash, but the Notorious K.I.D. sat down in the move and with the aid of the ropes kept Petey's shoulders down for the three.

Kid Kash pinned Petey Williams after a sitdown in 0:04:47.
Rating: *** 1/2

Kid Kash didn't stick around after getting his win as Petey was highly disappointed with what transpired, as was Frankie Kazarian, who jumped in the ring and planted Petey with the Wave of the Future. Not a good night for Petey, but his fortunes may change a week from now as he has been granted a Cruiserweight Title shot against Kazarian on Explosion!

ELIX SKIPPER BELITLES LOW-KI FOR LAST WEEK
Before their scheduled tag match with Bryan Danielson and AJ Styles, Elix Skipper and Low-Ki were talking backstage. Well, more accurately, Primetime was talking and Low-Ki was being lectured. Skipper berated Low-Ki for not being of more help a week ago when Skipper lost a match to the American Dragon, and told Low-Ki he was getting "a little sick and tired of carrying this team." The insults kept coming until Low-Ki finally shut Skipper up by getting right in his face and giving him the coldest stare in the world. Skipper realized how close he was to crossing the line and backed down before Low-Ki snapped. Skipper's attitude is tearing this team apart, so one has to wonder how long these two can stay on the same page.

Match #3
"The Phenomenal" AJ Styles/"American Dragon" Bryan Danielson vs. "Primetime" Elix Skipper/Low-Ki
Despite the differences in personalities that have developed lately between Elix Skipper and Low-Ki, they are competitors and seem to be working together still during matches. They needed to tonight, as they were taking on a charged up AJ Styles and Bryan Danielson. Skipper and Low-Ki defeated the Phenomenal One and American Dragon during the pre-game show before Summer Sizzler, but not under the cleanest of circumstances. This rematch was every bit as brutal, and it didn't take long before this match went bonzo gonzo. Danielson and Styles are wrestling purely with revenge and Paul London on their minds right now, and they want to see Skipper suffer. Primetime suffered all right as AmDrag didn't care that referee Antonio Santangelo was watching when he blasted him with a steel chair, causing the disqualification.

Elix Skipper and Low-Ki defeated AJ Styles and Bryan Danielson when Skipper defeated B. Danielson by disqualification in 0:03:42.
Rating: ***

Danielson hit Skipper with one more shot before Low-Ki pulled him away and retreated to the back. I don't know what it's going to take, but this one is a long way from over.

Match #4
Hardcore Holly/"The Teen Phenom" Ken Doane vs. Anarchy (w/ Lance Storm)
Hardcore Holly and Ken Doane have had a rocky start to their (forced) partnership, with Holly teaching Doane a couple of tough lessons. Doane has expressed his discontent with this partnership to Commissioner Dreamer, who has been less than sympathetic. The Teen Phenom decided to take matters into his own hands this week, as right after the pre-match conference before the bell rang, Doane nailed Holly with a kick to the midsection and power bombed him hard to the mat! Doane then left the ring, leaving the veteran sprawled out on the canvas, who soon became easy prey for Anarchy. Paul Burchill nailed his highly impressive C4 which Doug Williams followed with a springboard moonsault, putting this one in the books.

Anarchy (Doug Williams and Paul Burchill) defeated Ken Doane and Hardcore Holly when D. Williams pinned H. Holly after a springboard moonsault in 0:00:40.
Rating: *

Another victory for Anarchy, this one in quick fashion thanks to Ken Doane. When Hardcore Holly came to, he did not look at all happy. Then again, when does Hardcore Holly ever look happy? Lance Storm applauded as his contingent from England continues to impress.

TOMMY DREAMER GIVES LANCE STORM SOME NEWS
Right after commercial break, while Lance Storm and Anarchy were still celebrating their victory, Tommy Dreamer met them to deliver a bit of information to Storm. Because of the recent actions of he and his minions, Lance Storm will no longer be receiving a shot at the North American Title. Storm wanted to protest, but Dreamer cut him off before he could and said that instead, Storm, Paul Burchill, and Doug Williams will be involved in a six-man tag team match at Retribution against Monty Brown and Chris Jericho. Storm asked who the third man would be, and Dreamer said watch closely because he will be revealed by the end of the evening.

CHRISTOPHER DANIELS AND REY MYSTERIO JR. PROPOSE A MATCH FOR THIS EVENING
"Fallen Angel" Christopher Daniels and Rey Mysterio Jr. have formed a bit of an alliance, along with Booker T, in recent weeks to fight the Prophecy. Daniels takes on the leader of the Prophecy, CM Punk, at Retribution, but he had a different agenda tonight. The battles that Daniels and Mysterio had last year are well documented, and the bad blood these two have/had for each other has yet to be addressed since Daniels returned from injury. Daniels told Mysterio that if they were going to fight on the same side, they were going to have to be able to trust each other. The Fallen Angel proposed a match, one-on-one, with Mysterio tonight to settle whatever differences the two have once and for all. Mysterio agreed to the match, saying he doesn't trust Daniels either, and that this is the only way to get past their past.

Match #5
Television Title Match
"The Rated R Superstar" Edge (c) (w/ Lita) vs. "The Italian Stallion" Chuck Palumbo
Chuck Palumbo's confidence was at an all-time high after he picked up a (Mick Foley aided) victory over Eddie Guerrero, and he brought that confidence with him against the Television champion, "The Rated R Superstar" Edge, who has a huge cage match with Matt Hardy to look forward to at Retribution. It was painfully obvious from the opening bell that Edge wasn't taking the Italian Stallion seriously, which in all fairness is hard to do it. But Palumbo is a big tough Italian when he wants to be, and tonight, he wanted to be. Edge could hardly believe how much Palumbo was bringing it, hitting a variety of hard slams and even harder kicks. Edge, of course, got in his fair share of offense too, but as the match kept going, everyone, including Palumbo himself, was starting to believe that the Television Title was going to change hands. Palumbo went as far as to hit the Jungle Kick, but a convenient distraction from Lita kept this match from being over. While the ref dealt with Lita, Edge caught the Italian Stallion with a low blow. The Spear followed, and Edge escaped by the skin of his teeth.

Edge pinned Chuck Palumbo with the Spear in 0:07:43.
Rating: ** 1/2
(Edge retained the GCW Television Title.)

Edge grabbed his TV Title and left a little more than relieved. Palumbo received a nice round of applause for his efforts, because if it weren't for Lita, he could very well be carrying championship gold right now.

Match #6
Rey Mysterio Jr. vs. "Fallen Angel" Christopher Daniels
Though these two have recently been fighting on the same side, the history between Mysterio and Daniels is a long and violent one. Video clips of their feud from last year were shown, including the Fallen Angel jabbing Mysterio in the throat with his cross that caused Mysterio serious damage to his larnyx. The match started out as a technical display, but the tempers started to flare as they remembered why they had feuded in the first place. The crowd picked up on the tension and was really into the contest the more Daniels and Mysterio assaulted each other. Daniels tried to keep Mysterio on the mat knowing he couldn't fly with him, and Mysterio surprised the Fallen Angel with his ability to match his mat wrestling and power. In the end though Daniels countered Mysterio and got a quick Angel's Wings in to pick up a big win.

Christopher Daniels pinned Rey Mysterio Jr. with the Angel's Wings in 0:11:19.
Rating: *** 3/4

After the match it looked like Daniels and Mysterio might come to blows again, but cooler heads prevailed and the two shook hands. With this win, Daniels has a lot of momentum as he looks to get revenge against CM Punk at Retribution.

EDDIE GUERRERO TAKES HIS INSULTS OF MICK FOLEY TOO FAR
Latino Heat got his wish in that he will wrestle Mick Foley in a hardcore match at Retribution, but Eddie Guerrero doesn't seem to be content with just that, especially after Foley's involvement in costing Guerrero his match with Chuck Palumbo a week ago. Guerrero was obviously looking to incite a fight, and he knows how to antagonize with the best of them. Guerrero tried pushing Foley's buttons by verbally assaulting his legacy, but it wasn't until he talked about Foley's family that the Hardcore Legend ran out and the fight was on! Officials immediately ran down to break it up, but eh, good look with that. The crowd exploded as Foley hit his patented clothesline sending them both flying over the top rope. The fight spilled into the crowd before the two disappeared into the back.

Match #7
Non-Title Match
"The Alpha Male" Monty Brown (North American champion) vs. Rhyno
Rhyno has attacked North American champion Monty Brown on several occasions, and we found out it was at the payment of Lance Storm. Storm was originally supposed to get a North American Title shot at Retribution, but because of Storm's actions along with his partners-in-crime, Anarchy, it has been turned into a six-man tag match against Brown, Chris Jericho, and a third partner that Tommy Dreamer said would be revealed by the end of the night. Much like their match at Summer Sizzler, this one wasn't pretty, but it sure was entertaining as two of our most powerful brawlers went toe-to-toe. In the end, Rhyno missed the Gore, but stopped himself just short of connecting with the turnbuckles. He turned back around only for the Alpha Male to whip him into the far turnbuckle and follow up with the Pounce. Game, set, match.

Monty Brown pinned Rhyno with the Pounce in 0:07:04.
Rating: ***

Brown didn't get much of a chance to revel in his victory before LANCE STORM and ANARCHY ran in and gave the North American champion the beat down. Rhyno joined in when he got up, but the odds became a bit more even when CHRIS JERICHO ran in. Though Y2J managed to knock the members of Anarchy out of the ring, the numbers got to him as well. But the complexion of the situation changed when CHRIS BENOIT ran down, and he brought a friend with him in the form of a chair! Lance Storm had the good sense to get out of the ring, but Rhyno wasn't so lucky as Benoit blasted him in the head, causing him to fall out of the ring. It looks as if the Rabid Wolverine is the third man on the team. Storm was said to not be happy about this and has paid Rhyno to take out Benoit next week on Explosion.

MNM ARE ON THEIR WAY
Another promo showed for the debuting team of Melina, Johnny Nitro, and Joey Mercury, collectively known as MNM. From what the reports are, this team is high on talent and short on modesty. After the vignette, we learned that MNM debuts at Retribution during the pre-game show, where there is going to be a Tag Team Turmoil for a future shot at the World Tag Team Titles. The teams will all be announced next week, but MNM is definitely one of them.

Match #8
MAIN EVENT
Non-Title Match
Eric Angle/"The Whole F'n Show" Rob Van Dam (World Tag Team champions) vs. Kurt Angle/John Bradshaw Layfield (w/ Lamont)
Eric Angle got his first chance to get back in the ring with his brother Kurt in our main event, as Eric and his partner Rob Van Dam took on Kurt and John Bradshaw Layfield. The World Tag Team Titles were not on the line seeing as how Kurt Angle and JBL have never teamed before, but the titles weren't the story here. Eric Angle was a little bit too amped up to start this match, trying desperately to get his hands on his brother and thus not focusing much on teamwork, which is still important for he and RVD because you must remember that they haven't been a team for too long either. The heel team had two specific goals: 1) keep RVD in the ring and grounded and 2) keep Eric Angle away from Kurt Angle. After things calmed down, this turned into a quality tag team match. During the match Kurt kept bossing JBL around, continually reminding him that he still "owed him." JBL put up with it the best he could, but by the end, he and Angle simply couldn't get along. JBL had put RVD down with the Stock Market Crash, but Kurt Angle tagged himself in as he wanted the glory all to himself. Angle put RVD in the Ankle Lock, but RVD wouldn't tap and pulled himself toward the ropes. He got close enough to the ropes where JBL could reach over and tag himself back in. Angle was livid and spun JBL to ask him what he thought he was doing, and a huge argument ensued. This allowed RVD to recover enough to kick JBL in the back, knocking him into Kurt Angle and sending the Olympic champion to the floor. RVD got the tag into Eric Angle, who wasted no time in catching JBL with the Angle Slam for the win.

Eric Angle and Rob Van Dam defeated John Bradshaw Layfield and Kurt Angle when E. Angle pinned JBL with the Angle Slam in 0:17:24.
Rating: ****

The World Tag Team champions pick up a huge victory to close out our show tonight. After the match though, SHELTON BENJAMIN, CHARLIE HAAS, and STEVE BRADLEY rushed into the ring and joined Kurt Angle in attacking Eric Angle and Rob Van Dam. JBL thought about joining in too, but he was too pissed off at Kurt Angle to become a part of this. One man who did want to be a part of it though was BROCK LESNAR, and the World Heavyweight champion made his presence felt by assisting the World Tag Team champions in cleaning house. One man he didn't get a hold of though was his opponent in 13 days, Kurt Angle. He will get a shot next week though, as it has just been signed and will take place from the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, Rhode Island. It will be Kurt Angle and the World's Greatest Tag Team taking on Brock Lesnar, Eric Angle, and Rob Van Dam! What a match that will be!

Poor Cowboy Bob.  I'm curious to see if he's going to start to garner any ill feelings for his son with his constantly being murdered on live TV.

Cruiserweight action is looking good my buddykins.  Next week's title match should be entertaining.

I'm thinking we're going to be seeing a Skipper/Ki match sooner than later.  The fork seems to be closing in on this team.

Obviously Danielson and Styles heart London a lot.  This is going to get real ugly (i'm thinking for all parties) before a proper revenge has finally been extracted.

That lil bastard.  Doane is gonna have hell to pay next week.

OoOoOoOo, Daniels vs. Mysterio, tasty.  Their past matches were great, tonight should deliver too.

I didn't think Edge/Palumbo would be much of a match at all, but Palumbo laid his cards out on the table tonight and held on longer than I thought.

I wasn't expecting a clean win from Daniels.  More of the kind of ending that leaves things up in the air but still allows them to have that mutual respect they were missing before.  On the other hand, Daniels going over does give him that extra momentum for when he faces Punk.

I didn't think I could want to see Guerrero vs. FOley more than I did... and now I do. *bows*

Nice end to the Brown/Rhyno match... heehee... Brown Rhinos... anyway, the 6-man tag should be awesome as all get out especially with the inclusion of Benoit.

w00tage for the main event and the events which transpired post main eventally.  I have a feeling that Angle and the WGTT are going to have Bradley and JBL close at hand though during the match.
