[GCW] Monday Night Explosion - 8/29/05

Snabbit888Posted on 07/19/06 at 00:49:28

Echols Hall in Norfolk, Virginia was completely sold out as Global Championship Wrestling was here for the first time, bringing you the final Monday Night Explosion of what has been a hot August. On tonight's card, two big Summer Sizzler rematches as Chris Jericho locks up with Lance Storm, and Christopher Daniels, Booker T, and Rey Mysterio Jr. team up one more time to face the Prophecy! Also, Bryan Danielson meets Elix Skipper, and Chuck Palumbo meets Eddie Guerrero one more time! But first, Cruiserweight Title on the line, so let's go to the ring!

Match #1
Cruiserweight Title Match
Frankie 'The Future" Kazarian (c) vs. Petey Williams
Frankie Kazarian was definitely tooting his own horn a week ago about the inability of the cruiserweight division to present a challenger that can beat him, which is where Petey Williams stepped in, proclaiming that he was all the competition that the Future would need. Petey was certainly right on that point, giving Kazarian a run for his money. Petey's MO was to hit the Canadian Destroyer, because as of yet, nobody has kicked out of that. Petey came close to hitting it a couple times, but Kazarian kept finding a way to get out of it at the last moment. All of the close calls started to get to Petey, who started taking too many risks, and finally one didn't pay off. After successfully connecting on a missile dropkick, Petey went up one more time, but Kazarian fell back into the ropes and caused Petey to crotch himself. The Canadian Destroyer fell into the ring and was promptly nailed by Kazarian's opportunistic Wave of the Future that put this one in the books.

Frankie Kazarian pinned Petey Williams with the Wave of the Future in 0:09:13.
Rating: *** 1/2
(Frankie Kazarian retained the GCW Cruiserweight Title.)

KID KASH HAS A CHALLENGE FOR KAZARIAN
Directly after Kazarian's successful title defense, "The Notorious K.I.D." Kid Kash came out, and he was looking as fiesty as ever. Kash had a microphone in hand and he let everyone know that he was sick of everyone ganging up on him, citing the abuses he suffered at Summer Sizzler as the latest example of this "injustice." Kash said he was sick of it, and that he wasn't just going to be everyone's whipping boy any longer. Kash challenged Kazarian for a title match at Retribution, saying that he was going to get the respect he deserved. Kazarian simply laughed and said he was going to whip Kash's ass like he has so many times before. Kash told him to laugh it up, because this time he's bringing backup. Kazarian didn't seem worried by this though, and we have ourselves a new match for the pay-per-view.

Match #2
D-Ray 3000 vs. Steve Bradley
D-Ray 3000 has gotten a rough introduction into Global Championship Wrestling. Last week, he, along with partner Shark Boy, were destroyed by Anarchy. This week, he ate a large handful of beatdown courtesy of Steve Bradley, who never seems to be in a good mood these days. There are also rumors that he may be in the doghouse with Kurt Angle a little due to looking for fights more than looking to help Team Angle, but those don't appear to be true (and I don't think Kurt is dumb enough to get Bradley on his bad side). D-Ray was on Bradley's side simply by being his opponent, and he suffered a beating for it. It didn't take long for Bradley to get bored toying with D-Ray and plant him with the Smashmouth.

Steve Bradley pinned D-Ray 3000 with the Smashmouth in 0:02:49.
Rating: *** 1/4

A good way to bounce back for Steve Bradley.

KURT ANGLE CASHES IN ON HIS FAVOR FROM JBL
Kurt Angle met backstage with John Bradshaw Layfield to discuss some business, namely the favor that JBL still owes him. Angle told JBL he wanted to cash in on that favor tonight as he wanted JBL to take on Brock Lesnar in a non-title match in tonight's main event. JBL was not too keen on this idea, but Angle reminded him that if it wasn't for him letting Steve Bradley be his partner, Abyss would have killed him. JBL finally relented and agreed to the match, but he told Angle he had better have his back. Angle smiled before saying, "Of course, as long as you make sure that Lesnar doesn't make it to Retribution at 100%."

Match #3
"American Dragon" Bryan Danielson (w/ AJ Styles) vs. "Primetime" Elix Skipper (w/ Low-Ki)
Before the match began, we saw video from last week Elix Skipper and Low-Ki's failed attempt to take the World Tag Team Titles from Eric Angle and Rob Van Dam. Low-Ki has taken the loss in stride, but backstage reports are saying that Skipper hasn't been as gracious, blaming Bryan Danielson and AJ Styles for the loss, which really doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. Skipper met the American Dragon in a singles match tonight, which could be considered ill advised if you consider that Danielson already wants to dismantle Primetime for bragging about severely injuring Paul London. This was an intense match that didn't slow down from bell to bell. Danielson's emotion helped him carry the match early, but Skipper weathered that storm and gave the American Dragon just as much as he received. However, AmDrag's blows seemed to have a little extra behind them as Danielson countered out of the Play of the Day and walloped Primetime with a running forearm smash that knocked Skipper loopy enough to score the victory.

Bryan Danielson pinned Elix Skipper after the Running Forearm Smash in 0:06:43.
Rating: *** 1/2

A small bit of retribution for Bryan Danielson, but this one is a long way from over.

Match #4
"Fallen Angel" Christopher Daniels/Booker T/Rey Mysterio Jr. (w/ Sharmell) vs. The Prophecy (w/ Daffney)
Our first of two rematches from Summer Sizzler was next as Christopher Daniels, Booker T, and Rey Mysterio Jr. teamed up one more time to take on the Prophecy. Just like the match at Summer Sizzler, CM Punk kept himself out of the ring as much as possible, trying to keep the face contingent as off-balance and frustrated as possible. Finally Daniels had enough and went to the outside, pulled Punk off the apron, and the battle was on. During the chaos, Sean O'Haire grabbed a chair from ringside and slide it into the ring for Goldust to use on Booker T, but Sharmell jumped in the ring and hit Goldust with a low blow. Booker grabbed the chair and painted the Bizarre One across the back. Unfortunately for Booker and his team, referee Jimmy Appleseed saw it and threw this match out.

The Prophecy (CM Punk, Goldust and Sean O'Haire) defeated Booker T, Christopher Daniels and Rey Mysterio Jr. when Goldust defeated Booker by disqualification in 0:10:45.
Rating: ** 1/2

The match was over, but the fight was not as Booker continued to beat on Goldust, Daniels and Punk continued to fight up the aisleway, and Mysterio jumped on O'Haire with a corkscrew plancha. Eventually it ended up with Booker and Mysterio standing tall in the ring with Daniels and Punk having fought all the way to the back.

KEN DOANE DOESN'T WANT A TAG PARTNER ANYMORE, BUT TOMMY DREAMER DOESN'T CARE
Ken Doane stomped his way into the office of Tommy Dreamer and had some harsh words for the Commissioner, telling him that Hardcore Holly was crazy and he didn't feel safe being his tag team partner. Dreamer listened until the Teen Phenom demanded that he get to wrestle in singles matches again. Dreamer told him that until his attitude improved, he would be wrestling nothing but tag matches with Hardcore Holly, including the next match tonight against the World's Greatest Tag Team. Doane tried to say some more, but Dreamer cut him off and told him he would be wise to keep his mouth shut and go wrestle.

Match #5
Hardcore Holly/"The Teen Phenom" Ken Doane vs. The World's Greatest Tag Team
Ken Doane wants nothing other than to be wrestling singles matches and as he is saying, reaching toward immortality. By decree of Tommy Dreamer, Doane was forced to tag with a man of Dreamer's choosing. That man turned out to be Hardcore Holly, who is known for hating everyone, but especially rookies. Unlike their first attempt at teaming together, Holly actually spent part of the match in the ring to start and looked good against the former World Tag Team champions. Doane couldn't stand Holly taking control of this match, so he tagged himself in. This is where things went badly for Doane, as the more experienced Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin went to work, using the Teen Phenom's youth and energy against him. Haas took control of Doane with a front facelock, which normally wouldn't put a man down. However, Doane wasn't expecting Holly to take this time to teach a lesson, refusing to tag in when Doane would get close. Doane was getting more and more upset, and in doing so, used more and more energy and eventually thrashed himself into passing out.

The World's Greatest Tag Team (Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin) defeated Ken Doane and Hardcore Holly when C. Haas defeated K. Doane when K. Doane passed out in a front facelock in 0:07:10.
Rating: ** 1/2

Well, that's 0-for-2 for this new team. They're not winning, but the lessons are definitely being taught. Another victory for the WGTT, but now Benjamin has to get ready for Rob Van Dam at Retribution.

Match #6
"Y2J" Chris Jericho vs. Lance Storm (w/ Anarchy)
Our second of the Summer Sizzler rematches was our next match with Chris Jericho and Lance Storm going at it one more time. Highlights were shown from Summer Sizzler where Doug Williams and Paul Burchill debuted to help Storm pick up the win. Anarchy was down at ringside for this one, and Williams and Burchill took every liberty they could to help Lance Storm win. Storm kept conveniently throwing Jericho to the floor and distracting the referee, allowing Anarchy to get in some cheap shots. When it looked like the odds were going to be too great for Y2J, MONTY BROWN ran in and took out Doug Williams and Paul Burchill with some hard forearm shots. While the Alpha Male had Anarchy occupied, Y2J got Storm in position for a power bomb, but when he got Storm up, Storm reversed it with a rana. Jericho tried to kick out, but that was difficult when Storm had the ropes hooked for extra leverage.

Lance Storm pinned Chris Jericho after a rana in 0:11:27.
Rating: *** 1/4

Storm slid out of the ring in a hurry, having stolen another victory from Chris Jericho. Anarchy managed to get away from Brown long enough to escape with Storm to the back. It has since been announced that Monty Brown will be in action next week in a non-title match going up against Lance Storm's hired gun, Rhyno.

MATT HARDY CHALLENGES EDGE FOR RETRIBUTION
Matt Hardy wasn't in action tonight, but he and Mickie James did come out for an interview. Hardy said that he was sick and tired of Edge and Lita running their mouths and wanted to settle things once and for all. Hardy issued one more challenge for the Rated R Superstar, this time for Retribution, wanting Edge in a match that will settle this issue once and for all - the cage match. Mickie James added that if Lita even tried to get involved that she would be on the receiving end of a beating. Edge came out and told Hardy he had nothing else to prove to him and that he was done with it, turning down Hardy's challenge. Hardy went on to taunt Edge, wondering why Lita would be with Edge because he is "obviously not a man." Edge claims to be smart, but he got tricked by the oldest one in the book as he accepted the challenge, and we have a cage match for the Television Title and a whole lot of pride at Retribution.

Match #7
"The Italian Stallion" Chuck Palumbo vs. "Latino Heat" Eddie Guerrero
A few weeks ago, Eddie Guerrero used Chuck Palumbo as a pawn to get to Mick Foley, brutally assaulting the Italian Stallion on the set of his show, Palumbo's Pizza Place, with a pizza cutter. Palumbo was still bandaged up, including a large one on his throat, but he was running on pure adrenaline and hatred in this match against Latino Heat. Guerrero is so far gone that it was as if he enjoyed the ass kicking he was getting in the opening minutes of this match as the much larger Palumbo asserted his will as he chose. Eddie's cheating and underhanded nature put him into command of this match when he focused his attack on Palumbo's throat. Palumbo showed a lot of heart by even agreeing to this match, but with his throat in the condition that it is, he was going in with a bullseye. Guerrero theoretically could have put the Italian Stallion away any time that he wanted to, but he was enjoying causing physical pain too much to worry about winning a match. The beating was getting to be so bad that Mick Foley couldn't take it any more, rushing out to the aid of his friend, checking on Palumbo when he was out on the floor. Eddie saw Foley out on the floor and nailed him from behind, tossing him into the ringpost. He then threw Palumbo back into the ring before climbing to the top for the Frog Splash, but Foley jumped up on the apron to get Eddie's attention. Referee JD Sanders intervened and got into Foley's path so he couldn't get in the ring, but when Foley got down, he shook the ropes enough that Guerrero lost his balance and crotched himself on the top turnbuckle, falling into the ring. Guerrero got to his feet, but he was stunned enough that he didn't see the Jungle Kick coming as Palumbo scored a huge upset!

Chuck Palumbo pinned Eddie Guerrero with the Jungle Kick in 0:08:28.
Rating: ** 3/4

Guerrero's night was about to go from bad to worse as Mick Foley got in the ring and planted Latino Heat with a double arm DDT for good measure. Foley helped Palumbo up as the two celebrated his victory.

RANDY ORTON BRAGS ABOUT WHAT HE DID LAST WEEK, BUT HE GETS PAID A VISIT
Before our main event, Randy Orton and Cowboy Bob Orton spoke from backstage. Orton seemed quite proud of himself for what went down a week ago with his injuring of The Hurricane, who doesn't seem to be returning any time soon. Orton said this was the start of a new attitude that would see him make his way to his "rightful place on the top of the GCW mountain." Well, somebody has a big problem with that, and that was ABYSS who came in like a man possessed! Randy Orton saw Abyss coming and pulled his own father Cowboy Bob in the way! Abyss wanted to get his hands on somebody, and he gave him a beating, busting him open and leaving him lying on the ground while his son headed for the hills. Orton's new attitude could lead to success in the future, but I'm not sure that making Abyss angry is a good first move.

Match #8
Non-Title Match
On Commentary: Kurt Angle
Brock Lesnar (World Heavyweight champion) vs. John Bradshaw Layfield (w/ Lamont)
Kurt Angle decided to cash in on the favor that JBL owed him tonight by making him take on the World Heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar in a non-title match. JBL wasn't happy with having to wrestle Lesnar one-on-one, but Angle assured him it would be all right, even coming down to ringside to do commentary. Despite JBL's not wanting to wrestle this match, JBL is a hard nosed fighter and went toe-to-toe with the World champion. Kurt Angle didn't speak much on commentary as he was focusing intently on his opponent for Retribution. After a hard fight where the momentum swung back and forth several times, the Monster From Minnesota had JBL up for the F-5. Angle held true to his promise of having JBL's back as he grabbed his chair and popped Lesnar in the midsection with it, causing the champ to drop JBL and Jimmy Appleseed to throw the match out.

Brock Lesnar defeated John Bradshaw Layfield by disqualification in 0:13:42.
Rating: ***

Angle and JBL stomped away at Lesnar, who did his best to fight back but against two men like Angle and JBL, the odds will get the better of you. Kurt Angle got a German suplex on the Monster and JBL hit the Stock Market Crash before ERIC ANGLE and ROB VAN DAM ran down to run them off to close out the show. Eric almost got his hands on his brother, but it wouldn't be tonight. Lesnar was a little shaken up but will still be ready for his title defense at Retribution, but will he be in top shape against Kurt Angle?

We are one step closer to Retribution, the first pay-per-view to take place from Connecticut as we go to the Hartford Civic Center on September 18th. The card is shaping up nicely.

World Heavyweight Title Match - Brock Lesnar (c) vs. Kurt Angle

North American Title Match - "The Alpha Male" Monty Brown (c) vs. Lance Storm

Hardcore Match - "The Hardcore Legend" Mick Foley vs. "Latino Heat" Eddie Guerrero

Television Title Steel Cage Match - "The Rated R Superstar" Edge (c) vs. Matt Hardy

Cruiserweight Title Match - Frankie "The Future" Kazarian (c) vs. "The Notorious K.I.D." Kid Kash

"Fallen Angel" Christopher Daniels vs. CM Punk

"The Whole F'n Show" Rob Van Dam vs. Shelton Benjamin
americamamushiPosted on 07/22/06 at 00:20:14

Petey wasn't gonna win the title.  Maybe sometime, but not tonight.  They put on a good show though and that's what counts.

Poor D-Ray.  At least Shark Boy doesn't take all the brunt now.  ;) haha

Good win for Danielson.  Him and Styles seem to me like they might be getting on the fast track to the tag team titles.

I'm salivating over Punk/Daniels *wipes drool from mouth*

I love what you're doing with Holly & Doane.  Good stuff Ry-Guy.  Holly is sure teachin' the lessons, but the question is how long is it going to take Doane to actually learn something.

I hate the way you manage to tie things in together so well.  I'm jealous. :P  *cough*ass*cough* haha.

The Edge/Hardy cage is gonna be brutal.

Surprised to see Palumbo get the win, but thanks to Foley he pulls it out.

Haha, Randy sacrificed his dad.  I love it. :)

Hot ending to the show.  It's hawt like rootbeer, with an A and a W
