[GCW] Monday Night Explosion - 8/22/05

Snabbit888Posted on 07/06/06 at 04:05:15

Only 24 hours removed from Summer Sizzler, and the action was still coming as the RBC Center in Raleigh, North Carolina played host to Monday Night Explosion! On tonight's show, Christopher Daniels will get his first chance to regain the Television Title since returning from his injury as he takes on Television champ Edge! Also, Ken Doane's new tag team partner will be revealed as they take on the Basham Brothers, Chris Jericho will meet Eddie Guerrero, and Randy Orton will face Raleigh's own, The Hurricane! Not only that, but now that the World's Greatest Tag Team are no longer the World Tag Team champions, Elix Skipper and Low-Ki can cash in on their title shot, and they will do so tonight against the brand new World Tag Team champions, Eric Angle and Rob Van Dam! And in our big main event, "The Crippler" Chris Benoit goes one-on-one with John Bradshaw Layfield! What a night we have in store for you!

KURT ANGLE WANTS HIS WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE BACK
Our show got going with the Olympic hero, Kurt Angle, coming out for an interview. Angle pretended to be humble by complimenting Brock Lesnar on retaining the World Heavyweight Title in the Elimination Chamber, until he added that it was all a big load of crap. Angle used points like how he would have won the match had he not been hosed and had to start off, while Lesnar got to come in last when Angle had already been eliminated. Angle temporarily turned his aggression towards John Bradshaw Layfield, who had eliminated him, saying that they thought they had a deal, but he was still going to cash in on his favor very soon. Angle said that he still hasn't gotten a one-on-one rematch for the World title, and he wants in NOW. This brought out the champ himself, Brock Lesnar, who was more than willing to accept Angle's challenge. You want a shot at my title? All you had to do was ask, Kurt. So let's do this, right here in Raleigh, North Carolina!" Though the crowd was ecstatic over the sound of this match, Angle had other ideas. "I'm injured from last night's match, Brock, and you know it! I had to start the Elimination Chamber last night, remember?" Lesnar saw Angle trying to back out, and instead suggested they meet on September 18th in Hartford, Connecticut at Retribution. Angle accepted, and we have our main event for the next pay-per-view in 4 weeks time.

Match #1
Booker T (w/ Sharmell) vs. CM Punk (w/ Daffney)
A great wrestling match to kick off the show as Booker T continued his battles with the Prophecy by taking on its leader, CM Punk. The Prophecy lost the six-man tag team match one night ago, but other than taking the decisive fall to Christopher Daniels, Punk was hardly involved as he'd rather have his underlings do his fighting. They weren't around for this one though as Commissioner Tommy Dreamer specifically banned them from ringside. Though Punk does have what essentially comes down to a gang of thugs, that doesn't mean he is not greatly skilled in the ring. Though Booker gave him a thorough beating, Punk dodged the Axe Kick and took Booker down with the Greetings From Chicago. Punk then locked on his deadly Anaconda Vice which no one has found an answer for thus far, and that includes Booker T who had to give up when he couldn't make the ropes.

CM Punk made Booker T submit to the Anaconda Vice in 0:10:49.
Rating: **** 1/4

Though they were banned from the ring during the match, Goldust and Sean O'Haire weren't banned after the match as they ran in and put the boots to Booker T. O'Haire took down Booker with the Prophecy and then Goldust set him up in the corner for the Golden Globes Kick, but REY MYSTERIO JR. and CHRISTOPHER DANIELS came out to make the save. We know that we will see Daniels again later tonight when he meets Edge for the Television Title, but we have also been informed that we will see a Summer Sizzler rematch a week from now as Daniels, Booker T, and Mysterio will all team up again to meet CM Punk, O'Haire, and Goldust.

RANDY ORTON IS LOOKING TO REGROUP
Randy Orton was in his locker room with his father, Bob Orton Jr. Randy was livid, pacing around the room and screaming about how he blew his opportunity a night ago and that he knows he should be the World Heavyweight champion today. Cowboy Bob tried to calm him down, saying that he'll get another title shot. He's young and he's hungry and he'll be back there again. He then told his son that the best plan of action right now is to regroup and focus his energy elsewhere. Randy didn't want to hear it at first, but his father convinced him. Randy concluded the interview by saying, "It starts TONIGHT."

Match #2
Anarchy (w/ Lance Storm) vs. Shark Boy/D-Ray 3000
It looks like Shark Boy has found himself a new tag team partner as he came out with a unique competitor from Detroit, Michigan named D-Ray 3000. D-Ray appears to be as eccentric as Shark Boy and the two had fun together... until their opponents came to the ring anyway. They would be facing Lance Storm's team of Doug Williams and Paul Burchill, who are being referred to as Anarchy. They wrestled with a hard-nosed, no nonsense style which didn't bode well for Shark Boy and D-Ray 3000. Shark Boy suffered the brunt of the attack, being pinned after high double flapjack.

Anarchy (Doug Williams and Paul Burchill) defeated Shark Boy and D-Ray 3000 when Williams pinned Shark Boy after a double flapjack in 0:02:58.
Rating: *** 1/2

LANCE STORM FORMALLY INTRODUCES HIS BOYS AND MAKES A CHALLENGE WHILE HE'S AT IT
Lance Storm grabbed the microphone and put over Anarchy, saying that with their help there was nothing that could stop him in GCW. Storm went on to make a challenge. "I never lost the North American Title and I want it back!" Storm did have a valid point - when he lost the North American Title a year ago, it was because it was stripped from him when he tore his rotator cuff, not because anybody beat him. Storm went on to say that Monty Brown was walking around with property that wasn't his and he wanted it back, asking Brown to come down here and "do the right thing" which was to just give him back the title. The Alpha Male did come out, but he had quite a different take on it, saying, "If you think I'm just going to hand this title to you, you're even stupider than you look." Storm laughed a bit before saying, "I was hoping it wouldn't come down to this..." and just then, RHYNO ran in and Gored Brown out of his shoes! Storm got in Brown's face and told him he made the biggest mistake of his life before he slapped him. Storm then reached into his pocket and handed Rhyno a fistful of money. I guess we know why Rhyno has been attacking Brown. Brown was furious when he regained his bearings, and he went straight to Dreamer's office and demanded a match with Lance Storm at Retribution, which he has been granted.

Match #3
"The Teen Phenom" Ken Doane/??? vs. The Basham Brothers (w/ Shaniqua)
Ken Doane had no idea who his tag team partner was going to be, and you could tell he wanted to be anywhere than in this tag team match. Doane told Dreamer last night that he felt the tag team division was below him, to which Dreamer replied that the Teen Phenom was in desperate need of an attitude adjustment. Nobody could believe it when Doane's partner was announced... and it was HARDCORE HOLLY! Holly was around in GCW in the early days, but after a falling out with then President Ryan Niemiller, he left the company. However, with Niemiller gone, I guess Dreamer has brought Hardcore back in to whip Doane into shape. Apparently Doane was unfamiliar with Holly's reputation of hating rookies. Hardcore tried to talk to Doane before the match, but Doane was being very disrespectful to Holly by not even looking at him. Holly wasn't about to put up with that as he spun Doane around, scooped him up, and dropped him with the Alabama Slam, all before the match had even started! Holly left the ring and referee JD Sanders rang the bell, but Doane was already out of it, and Hardcore Holly showed no desire whatsoever to help out his young protege. It didn't take long for the Bashams to decimate Doane before putting him away with the Ball And Gag Bomb.

The Basham Brothers (Doug Basham and Danny Basham) defeated Ken Doane and Hardcore Holly when Doug Basham pinned K. Doane with the Ball And Gag Bomb in 0:01:25.
Rating: **

A rocky start to this new team to say the least. It looks like Doane is going to need to bring a new attitude to the table quick because Hardcore Holly isn't messing around. It's going to be a long and painful learning process for Ken Doane I'm sure.

Match #4
The Hurricane vs. Randy Orton (w/ Bob Orton Jr.)
The roof of the RBC Center almost blew off when The Hurricane was introduced. The hometown boy hasn't been to Raleigh in quite some time, and his friends and family were happy to see him getting a big opportunity against Randy Orton. Normally this is a match that you would think Orton would dominate, but wih the loud support of the crowd behind him, The Hurricane looked poised to pull off the upset of the year, getting many nearfalls that had the crowd counting along (and Cowboy Bob almost having a heart attack). The Hurricane was riding a wave of momentum and had Orton all set up for the Eye of the Hurricane, but Randy Orton showed just how good he is by somehow getting out of it and dropping the superhero with the R.K.O. and getting a win that was a lot harder to get than he expected.

Randy Orton pinned The Hurricane with the R.K.O. in 0:08:57.
Rating: *** 3/4

A valiant effort by The Hurricane, but he came up just a bit short. Randy Orton was a bit embarrassed by almost losing to The Hurricane, so he acted out poorly by continuing the assault on the Man In Green after the match. After a second R.K.O., Orton still wasn't done as he told his father to grab a chair from ringside. Randy took the chair and wrapped it around The Hurricane's head and throat, and this wasn't looking good. Referee Jimmy Appleseed tried to stop this, but Bob Orton took him down with a hard right hand. Orton climbed up to the second turnbuckle and jumped off, stomping on the chair and causing it to clamp down on The Hurricane's throat! The crowd was chanting for Abyss to come save his little buddy, but he wasn't here tonight as he was nursing injuries from the falls-count-anywhere match with Steve Bradley. The medical staff hurried to The Hurricane's side, but he was in very bad shape. The Ortons finally left the ring, but not after gloating about what they had just did.

THE CRUISERWEIGHT CHAMPION IS HERE, AND AS COCKY AS EVER
Frankie "The Future" Kazarian, the reigning Cruiserweight champion, was back with Mario Riviera for an interview. Kazarian said that despite Tommy Dreamer's best efforts to stack the deck against him, the Future was still looking good as he is still the Cruiserweight champion, citing "there isn't a cruiserweight in Global Championship Wrestling that can get this championship off of my waist!" PETEY WILLIAMS must have thought otherwise as he joined the interview, challenging Kazarian to a title match next week on Explosion. The Future didn't like being shown up like this and accepted Petey's challenge, and the match has been signed for a week from now when GCW is in Norfolk, Virginia.

Match #5
"Y2J" Chris Jericho vs. "Latino Heat" Eddie Guerrero
Chris Jericho and Eddie Guerrero have quite the history together in GCW, feuding for much of 2004. They put on some great matches back then, and this match tonight was no exception. A lot of people have varying opinions of these two competitors, but there is no denying that they are two of the very best in the world at what they do. This match as fun to watch because they know each other so well that it was almost like they knew what the other would do before they would even do it. Both Y2J and Latino Heat were getting flustered because many of their signature moves weren't working for them due to the familiarity of each man's opponent. The match kept going back and forth, and you would never think that these two men had been in separate wars only 24 hours ago. With these two, it's often a matter of when they can outsmart their opponent, and it would be Jericho who got the better of it tonight. Guerrero was going for the Three Amigos, and he was successful on two of them. The problem was on the third, Y2J reversed it into a small package to surprise Guerrero for the 3!

Chris Jericho pinned Eddie Guerrero after a small package in 0:15:32.
Rating: **** 1/2

A great great match that could have went either way, but it was Jericho that got the better of it this time around. If these two wrestled 10 times though, I'm sure they would tie at 5 a piece. Just a great wrestling match.

PALUMBO'S PIZZA PLACE - SPECIAL GUEST - MICK FOLEY
Despite his injuries, "The Italian Stallion" Chuck Palumbo was here with Palumbo's Pizza Place, and he had a very special guest in the Hardcore Legend, Mick Foley! Palumbo looked horrible with a large bandage wrapped around his throat, but he was all smiles as Foley was here in the ring, and with some stern words for Eddie Guerrero. Foley told Guerrero that he could handle all of the verbal taunts and threats, but what he did to Palumbo was completely crossing the line. Foley couldn't just sit back and watch someone (even if they are as goofy as the Italian Stallion) suffer in his name. Guerrero came out to the top of the ramp and told Foley is was finally nice of him to get some courage and actually show up, but his attack at Summer Sizzler proved nothing because he was already beaten from the Elimination Chamber. "If we met when I was fresh, essa, I would take you out once and for all!" Foley was intrigued by this, and said that he might have one more match in him if Guerrero was interested. Eddie seemed happy with this, hoping he finally got to the Hardcore Legend. Latino Heat asked when, and Foley suggested at Retribution. Guerrero was pumped until Foley added, "in a hardcore match! BANG BANG!" Eddie quickly tried to back track, but his big mouth got him into trouble as Tommy Dreamer has signed the match, and it will take place at Retribution! Mick Foley wrestling in a GCW ring!

Match #6
Television Title Match
"The Rated R Superstar" Edge (c) (w/ Lita) vs. "Fallen Angel" Christopher Daniels
Christopher Daniels had his chance to regain the Television Title after an injury caused him to drop it to his then leader CM Punk and put him on the shelf for months. This was Daniels chance to get a title back he doesn't feel he should have lost, but this would not be his night. Edge was already in the ring ready for his title defense, doing his normal making out with Lita routine. However when the Fallen Angel was introduced, he was nowhere to be found. A camera was sent to the back and Daniels was found unconscious by the entranceway! The top suspect is obviously CM Punk, but we have no way to prove that at this time. But either way, Daniels was in no shape to wrestle.

Edge was happy with this, thinking he was going to have the night off, but as Edge was leaving, Tommy Dreamer appeared on the GCW VideoTron and informed Edge that he will have a Television Title defense, and he would be defending against another former champion, Rey Mysterio Jr.!

Match #6, Take 2
Television Title Match
"The Rated R Superstar" Edge (c) (w/ Lita) vs. Rey Mysterio Jr.
Edge was not at all pleased with this as he had been preparing himself to wrestle Christopher Daniels, but now he had to deal with Rey Mysterio Jr. who has a distinctly different style in the ring. Mysterio used that element of surprise to his advantage early, stunning Edge from the opening bell with a springboard seated senton and a springboard dropkick. Edge took a powder to the floor to catch his bearings, but the floor is not safe when you're wrestling Mysterio, who jumped on him with a corkscrew plancha. Edge was completely and utterly confused by Mysterio's offense, but his size edge came into play when he caught Mysterio's second dive attempt and smashed him spine first into the post. Edge wore out Mysterio's back for the next couple of minutes, but when the Rated R Superstar went for the Spear, Mysterio sidestepped and countered with a drop toehold and set up for the 6-1-9. He hit the far ropes where Lita hooked his leg. Mysterio turned his attention to Lita and when he turned back around, he was met with a huge missile dropkick from the champion which caught Mysterio flush in the jaw and was enough to pin his shoulders to the mat for the 3.

Edge pinned Rey Mysterio Jr. after a missile dropkick in 0:05:53.
Rating: ***
(Edge retained the GCW Television Title.)

Edge celebrated a hard fought victory, but it wasn't the referee who handed him his championship but rather MATT HARDY, who did so by smashing it into his face! Lita was going to do something, but she quickly retreated when she saw that MICKIE JAMES was there as well. Hardy stood over Edge holding the Television Title over his head before dropping it on the unconscious Edge.

Match #7
World Tag Team Title Match
Eric Angle/"The Whole F'n Show" Rob Van Dam (c) vs. "Primetime" Elix Skipper/Low-Ki
Elix Skipper and Low-Ki earned a World Tag Team Title match with their victory at Super Cade, but while the World's Greatest Tag Team were the champs, they couldn't take that match due to a match stipulation from Beat Your Valentine in February. Well, Eric Angle and Rob Van Dam are the tag champions now, and Skipper and Low-Ki wasted no time in taking their title shot, prompting to do it on the first night possible. Angle and RVD will have to answer a lot of answers about their teamwork ability, and they answered some of those questions tonight as they looked surprisingly sharp. It may have been a combination of that and the fact that some of Skipper's questionable tactics over reason weeks has driven a bit of a wedge in between the former World Tag Team champions. There's no denying that Skipper and Ki are a great team though, and they looked to be within an eyelash of taking the titles on several occasions. However, Eric Angle and RVD are riding the momentum still from their emotional victory a night ago, and they used that to retain their titles tonight.

Eric Angle and Rob Van Dam defeated Elix Skipper and Low-Ki when RVD pinned Low-Ki with the Five Star Frog Splash in 0:07:26.
Rating: *** 3/4
(Eric Angle and Rob Van Dam retained the GCW World Tag Team Titles.)

Things aren't going to get any easier for Skipper and Low-Ki after this loss, as Bryan Danielson and AJ Styles are still right on their heels.

THE WORLD'S GREATEST TAG TEAM TRIES TO EXERCISE THEIR REMATCH CLAUSE, BUT DREAMER HAS OTHER IDEAS
Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin, after watching Eric Angle and Rob Van Dam retain the World Tag Team Titles, went into Tommy Dreamer's office and demanded that they get their rematch ASAP. Dreamer said he understands that they are entitled to a rematch and they will get it as soon as possible. The WGTT suggested Retribution, which Dreamer said would be a good idea... except he had an even better idea. Since Rob Van Dam has been out of commission for over a year thanks to Shelton Benjamin's handiwork, Dreamer decided it would be an interesting matchup if those two went one-on-one at Retribution. Benjamin practically begged Dreamer to reconsider, but said the match was already signed and ready to go. He said after that, the WGTT could have their rematch.

Match #8
MAIN EVENT
"The Crippler" Chris Benoit vs. John Bradshaw Layfield (w/ Lamont)
Our main event was a partial rematch from the Elimination Chamber as Chris Benoit and John Bradshaw Layfield took to the ring in a singles match. Both men were obviously hurting , especially JBL who had wrestled almost 35 minutes in the Chamber last night and took quite a beating on his way to being the runner-up. He looked solid early on though, trying to jump Benoit and get this match over in a hurry with an early Stock Market Crash attempt, but Benoit is too good for that as he countered and almost got JBL in the Crippler Crossface. JBL took a powder to the outside, but Benoit was definitely in his head already. From there, the pace of the match slowed down a bit as Benoit focused on taking out JBL's legs and JBL worked over Benoit's back. JBL uncharacteristically would go up to the top rope at one point, and Benoit caught him and brought him down with a huge superplex that got a very long two count. From there, Benoit went to work and was setting up the Crippler Crossface with the trifecta of German suplexes. He then went for his customary swandive headbutt, but Lamont's temporary distraction gave JBL the time to roll out of the way. The air was driven right out of the Crippler's lungs, and the next move JBL hit was the Stock Market Crash. The rest was elementary.

John Bradshaw Layfield pinned Chris Benoit with the Stock Market Crash in 0:11:14.
Rating: *** 1/4

A good match to end the night on and an impressive victory for John Bradshaw Layfield over the former World Heavyweight champion.

It'll be interesting to see what kinds of things Angle has up his sleeve before his match with Brock.  I imagine he'll try and find someway to give himself an edge.

Punk still looking good.  I like the 6-man feud, but I can't wait to see how Punk and Daniels settle things once and for all.

w00t for teh Anarchy.  :)  I like seeing Burchill's GLWF grooming come to fruition.  So Storm was behind the Rhyno hit on Brown.  Nice.  I love how Storm is using how he lost the title due to his injury to fuel his current drive for North American gold.

Like seeing Hardcore Holly back too.  He'll knock the dickishness right out of Doane.  May take time, but I imagine Holly can do it.

Holy awesome Batman!  Foley wrestling Guerrero at Retribution?! Dare my eyes deceive me?! :)  That.  will. Rawrk orn.

Well, it wasn't the match I was looking forward to, but Rey-rey makes a more than suitable replacement to face Edge tonight.  Good thing Edge has Hooty McBoob in his corner.  :)  Couldn't save him from Hardy though.

Interesting that Retribution will only have a one-on-one meeting between RVD & Benjamin.  It can't just be that easy though.  Me thinks some serious shit is going to go down between the two teams lead up to and during the PPV.

Good victory for JBL.  Seems to be on the rise.  Now he just has to keep that momentum going.

Excellent.
