[GCW] Monday Night Explosion - 5/30/05

Snabbit888Posted on 03/30/06 at 02:18:13

The Spokane Arena in beautiful Spokane, Washington was jam packed with rabid GCW fans ready for Monday Night Explosion, as the Road to Super Cade II continued! We are 20 days away and the action keeps getting more and more intense! As we get closer to the big pay-per-view event, we had two big title matches. CM Punk would defend the Television Title against the monster that is Abyss, and "The Alpha Male" Monty Brown would put the North American Title up for grabs against "Latino Heat" Eddie Guerrero! And don't forget our big tag team main event that will see Chris Benoit and Chris Jericho team up for the first time in GCW rings to take on Randy Orton and Steve Bradley! And not to mention for the first time ever, World Heavyweight champio Kurt Angle and number-one contender Brock Lesnar will meet, but in an Amateur Wrestling Challenge!

Match #1
Lance Storm vs. Petey Williams
The problems between Lance Storm and Petey Williams are well documented, but last week Petey tried to be the bigger man and apologize for what he had done to him (participating in an attack that prolonged Storm's rehab from injury). Storm was having none of it though as he dismissed the apology and later asked Commissioner Tommy Dreamer for this match. I still think Storm is a good guy at heart, but in this match, he was letting his emotions (as much as he has, anyway) run high, aggressively going after Petey Williams and using tactics that he normally wouldn't, such as chokes and eye gouges in plain sight of the referee. Petey got some offense in, but Storm used his vast experience advantage to use a great baseball slide counter to go under Petey's legs, hooking one of the legs as he went and turning it into the Maple Leaf! Petey tried to fight out, but Lance had it locked on good and Petey had to tap out.

Lance Storm made Petey Williams submit to the Maple Leaf in 0:03:47.
Rating: ***

Storm had won the match in impressive fashion, but he was refusing to release the hold! Petey was writhing in pain as Storm leaned back further and further. Referee Petey Pluck administered a 5 count, threatening to reverse the decision. Storm released at 4, but the damage had been done. Storm received quite the mixed reaction for what he did. I'm going to chalk this one up to Lance Storm being in a bad mood, but Storm needs to get out of this funk in a hurry.

KID KASH IS UPSET WITH HIS ALLIES
Before our next match, Kid Kash was talking with his supposed allies, Red and the Cruiserweight champion Frankie Kazarian. Kash was not happy with his partners, demanding to know why they didn't help him last night on High Voltage when Paul London jumped him from behind "like a coward." Kazarian tried to calm Kash down, assuring him that they would be right behind him in his match with AJ Styles. Kash wanted to retort, but Kazarian quickly ushered Kash toward the ring as it was time for the match.

Match #2
"The Phenomenal" AJ Styles vs. "The Notorious K.I.D." Kid Kash
Kid Kash, to put it quite simply, got his ass kicked last night after an ambush by Paul London (not to say he didn't have it coming). He let his partners in crime, Frankie Kazarian and Red, know that he was not pleased that he didn't receive any backup last night, but they assured him they would be there for him tonight in his match against AJ Styles. Kash wrestled with a certain swagger knowing that his posse would be there if anything went wrong. Styles and Kash went back and forth for several minutes before in a great series of reversals, Styles caught Kash with the Styles Clash. Good morning, good afternoon, good night.

AJ Styles pinned Kid Kash with the Styles Clash in 0:07:25.
Rating: *** 1/4

After the match, once Kash came to, he was not happy with his loss and let Styles know by attacking him from behind with a hard knee to the back. Kash stomped away at Styles before PAUL LONDON and REY MYSTERIO JR. started running down to the ring for the save. Kash didn't look too worried though, knowing that Frankie Kazarian and Red would show up. As London, Mysterio, and Styles all took turns hitting Kash with punches, Kazarian and Red did show up. They started toward the ring, but instead threw their arms up and headed to the back laughing! They had set Kash up. When you're a guy with the attitude of Kid Kash though, it's easy to see why no one wants to be your ally. Kash's night got worse as Mysterio hit the 6-1-9 and London followed with the London Calling.

CHARLIE HAAS' MIRACULOUS RECOVERY
The World's Greatest Tag Team, our reigning World Tag Team champions, came into Tommy Dreamer's office to have a word with him. Charlie Haas, who suffered a legitimate neck injury a week ago in the six man tag team match, was sporting a large neck halo. Nobody is disclaiming Haas got injured, but reports indicate that the injury was along the lines of a minor stinger, not anything that would necessitate such an elaborate neck stabilizing device. Haas and Shelton Benjamin told Dreamer that because of the "severity" of Haas' injury, they would be unable to defend the World Tag Team Titles at Super Cade against Booker T and Goldust. Dreamer responded by saying he was sorry to hear that and granting them the night off on June 19th. The WGTT were happy with this, until Dreamer stopped them to inform them that if they didn't defend the titles at Super Cade, they would be stripped of the gold and the championships would be handed over to Booker and Goldust! And the sound of this, Charlie Haas made a miraculous recovery, taking off the halo (not without some comical struggle) and saying he'd be ready to go. Dreamer told him good, because he would be in competition next week against Goldust in singles action.

JBL CUTS A DEAL WITH RHYNO
Rhyno's business seems to be booming as of late as he could be seen backstage talking with the ever wealthy John Bradshaw Layfield. Though we couldn't hear the details of the conversation, it was obviously that JBL was hiring Rhyno for a job tonight when a large wad of bills was exchanged. Though we didn't know at the time, we soon found out what JBL's motivation was.

Match #3
The Hurricane vs. Rhyno
Rhyno was scheduled to meet The Hurricane in our next match, but there was an uneasy feeling in the air from the opening bell. Prior to this match, John Bradshaw Layfield paid Rhyno a sum of money, but we weren't quite sure what for. It became very obvious after Rhyno dominated this match before putting the superhero away with the Gore.

Rhyno pinned The Hurricane with the Gore in 0:03:47.
Rating: *** ½

Rhyno had won the match, but now it was time for him to earn his money. The abuse didn't end with the bell as Rhyno drove The Hurricane into the mat with a spinebuster. He went to the floor and pulled out a table from under the ring, putting it into the ring and setting it up in the corner. Rhyno waited until the Man In Green got to his feet before crushing him through the table, causing it to break in half. The Hurricane was completely wiped out and had to be taken to the back with the aid of a stretcher. It looks like this job was successful. I can't imagine Abyss responding to his little buddy being injured like this in a positive manner, which might be exactly what JBL is wanting.

Match #4
"The Teen Phenom" Ken Doane vs. Jeff Hardy (w/ Lita & Daffney)
Jeff Hardy has yet to accept the challenge of his brother Matt for a Loser-Leaves-Town affair at Super Cade. We don't know if it's because he is scared to accept the challenge or if this is a tactic to piss Matt off even more. Tonight he had to face "The Teen Phenom" Ken Doane, who has been very impressive in his short time in GCW despite his youth and inexperience. The early stages of the match were firmly in Doane's favor, but when Daffney and Lita began to get involved, Jeff Hardy went to work. Jeff looked to be putting this one away when in a slap in the face to his brother, he hit the Twist of Fate, but he became distracted when MATT HARDY himself started to the ring, filled with a fury. The GCW Official Brigade ran in to cut Matt off, but the commotion was enough for Doane to roll Jeff up and get the 1-2-3.

Ken Doane pinned Jeff Hardy after a roll up in 0:03:51.
Rating: ***

Jeff went for Doane, but the Teen Phenom got out of there before any more damage could be inflicted, a win under his belt. Jeff Hardy was furious, and asked for the microphone from William Buck at ringside.

JEFF HARDY ACCEPTS HIS BROTHER'S CHALLENGE, BUT WITH A CATCH
A passioned Jeff Hardy had the microphone and told Matt Hardy he would accept his challenge for Super Cade with the Loser-Leaves-Town stipulations. But if Matt wanted him in the ring so badly for this match, it was going to be under his terms. Jeff said he would accept the match, but only under the condition that it was a Ladder Match! Matt had no problems with this, and we have yet another huge match to add to the already stacked Super Cade card!

Match #5
Television Title Match
CM Punk (c) (w/ Daffney) vs. Abyss
It's really hard to get a gauge on what CM Punk is thinking. He never seems to change his emotion, even if he's defending his Television Title against a foe as daunting as Abyss. Punk surprised a lot of people with the way he wrestled this match. In recent weeks, there has been no one who has been able to slow Abyss down as he's mowed through opponent after opponent after opponent. However, with Abyss' best friend Hurricane being stretchered earlier in the night by Rhyno, maybe his focus wasn't where it should have been as Abyss made a ton of mistakes and Punk exploited each and every one of them. Punk isn't a big guy, but he knows what he is doing in that ring and he systematically was wearing the big man down. Abyss finally got his act together when he caught Punk during a flying crossbody attempt, got him up on his shoulders, and hit a huge torture rack bomb. When you're as big and strong as Abyss, one big move like that can completely change the dynamic of a match, and Punk was in a lot of trouble. Abyss called for the Black Hole Slam when JOHN BRADSHAW LAYFIELD came out from the back. Abyss caught eye of him and immediately bolted from the ring, neglecting the fact that he is was in the middle of a match. Abyss was counted out as a result and CM Punk was still the Television champion.

CM Punk defeated Abyss by countout in 0:11:29.
Rating: ** 3/4
(CM Punk retained the GCW Television Title.)

Abyss lost the match, but that wasn't what was on his mind as he stomped his way up the ramp. JBL ran back behind the curtain and when Abyss arrived there, he was nearly split in half by a huge GORE from RHYNO! Abyss went down clutching his ribs after being driven hard onto the steel ramp. JBL started yelling demands at Rhyno, telling him he could earn a bonus if he takes Abyss out. Abyss slowly got to his feet and Rhyno punched Abyss over towards the edge of the stage. Rhyno got a running start at Abyss, but the monster caught him with a punch, followed by two more. Abyss grabbed Rhyno with a goozle looking to choke slam the Man Beast off the stage, but JBL caught Abyss with a low blow from behind! With Abyss doubled over, Rhyno got a head of steam again and hit the Gore... OFF THE STAGE! Both of these behemoths went crashing through a series of tables that were set up with electrical equipment on them. Neither man was moving as Barry Tarver and the GCW medical staff rushed out to help both men, putting them on stretchers, bringing the amount of stretchered wrestlers tonight to three. I hope JBL feels like he got his money's worth.

Match #6
North American Title Match
"The Alpha Male" Monty Brown (c) vs. "Latino Heat" Eddie Guerrero
After Abyss and Rhyno were taken care of, we had our second of two title matches with Monty Brown putting the North American Title up against "Latino Heat" Eddie Guerrero. Guerrero has said in recent weeks that he wants no part of Shawn Michaels, who returned at Mayhem to attack Latino Heat disguised as Black Tiger. Shawn Michaels has not been cleared to compete in GCW rings, so Eddie thought that he wouldn't have to worry about HBK during his North American Title match. He did have to worry about the Alpha Male though, who in his 7 months as North American champion has been unstoppable (the only man to really get the better of him being World Heavyweight champion Kurt Angle, and Angle needed help from the title belt for that one). Brown was hyped up early, hitting the Pounce barely a minute into the match. Eddie was injured enough for Brown to get the pin, but unfortunately for the champion, he hit him so hard that it knocked Latino Heat out of the ring. Brown, never wanting to win a match by countout, kept breaking the count to allow Guerrero to reenter the ring.

That Pounce obviously took a lot out of Guerrero, but as a veteran, he knows ways to get himself back into contention, and for Latino Heat, those ways almost always include lying, cheating, and stealing. Brown was neutralized by Eddie's willingness to go for the eyes, grab tights, distract the referee to hit a low blow, and whatever other tactics he could think of to keep the Alpha Male from ripping him in half. Eddie held Brown at bay long enough to recover, and then went for more of his high impact offense, even getting the Three Amigos. Eddie became distracted though when there was a commotion coming from the crowd... it was SHAWN MICHAELS! Security stopped HBK before he could get to the ring, but Guerrero definitely felt his presence, yelling for Michaels to leave him be. The temporary lapse in concentration cost Eddie, who soon fell victim to a big T-Bone Suplex and was pinned 1-2-3.

Monty Brown pinned Eddie Guerrero after a T-Bone Suplex in 0:15:17.
Rating: *** 1/2
(Monty Brown retained the GCW North American Title.)

After the bell rang, HBK tried his hardest to get into the ring, but more security came down to help keep him at bay. Commissioner Tommy Dreamer then came down himself and told Michaels that although he'd love to see it happen, he can't sanction the match under GCW jurisdiction because the Heartbreak Kid has yet to be cleared by a doctor to compete. The crowd booed this decision until Dreamer added that if Michaels can a) sign a release form that will excuse GCW of any liability should he get hurt, and b) provide his own referee, he would allow the unsanctioned match to take place at Super Cade, which illicited a HUGE pop. If Shawn Michaels can find a referee, we have another match for what is already going to be the biggest show of the year.

Match #7
"The Blueprint" Matt Morgan vs. Low-Ki vs. Danny Basham (w/ Shaniqua)
In recent weeks, Star Quality, Elix Skipper & Low-Ki, and the Basham Brothers have been engaging in what is becoming quite the tag team feud. All three teams are looking to get themselves in line for a World Tag Team Title shot (Skipper & Low-Ki, of course, not being eligible until the World's Greatest Tag Team lose the titles) and for the second week in a row, a member of each team took part in a singles triangle match. Last week, it was Doug Basham getting the win over Elix Skipper and Rob Conway. This week, Danny Basham, Low-Ki, and Matt Morgan all tried their hand. With as intense as these altercations are getting, it wasn't at all surprising to see the respective partners of each man come down to ringside. With all these combustible elements in one place, it didn't appear to be a matter of if the brawl would erupt, but when. As the match was developing in the ring, Doug Basham started taunting Skipper on the floor. Skipper finally had enough and chased after Basham, who ran around near Conway, who was focused in the ring. Doug Basham slapped Conway in the back of the head as he went by, and when the Ravishing One turned around, all he saw was Skipper. Conway nailed Skipper with a right hand and the fight was on! Doug Basham was laughing on the floor at the fight he caused, but he wasn't fighting when he backed into Matt Morgan who had went to the floor. Basham turned around only for Morgan to level him with a big boot. Morgan may have got the sense of satisfaction from that, but in doing so, he was unable to break up the pin in the ring after Low-Ki nailed the Ki Krusher on Danny Basham.

Low-Ki defeated Danny Basham and Matt Morgan when Low-Ki pinned Danny Basham with the Ki Krusher in 0:10:34.
Rating: *** 1/2

The fight was finally broken up by the GCW Official Brigade, but it's clear that this one is a long way from over.

RANDY ORTON AND STEVE BRADLEY DON'T SHARE A LOT OF TRUST FOR ONE ANOTHER
Before our main event match, Randy Orton and Steve Bradley got together to presumably talk strategy, but to say that these two don't trust each other is vastly overestimating them. Not only do they not trust each other, but from these words they shared here, I'm shocked that they didn't start killing each other in the locker room. Both were members of the Sensationals, and when the group split, they split to different sides of the fence. Though the fans don't particularly like either of them these days, that doesn't mean they have to like each other. It's going to be interesting to see if they can keep their hatred for one another suppressed long enough to contend with the tag team of former World Heavyweight champions they have to face.

Match #8
MAIN EVENT
"The Crippler" Chris Benoit/"Y2J" Chris Jericho (w/ Nancy Benoit) vs. Randy Orton/Steve Bradley (w/ Bob Orton Jr.)
Chris Benoit and Steve Bradley will meet at Super Cade, as will Randy Orton and Chris Jericho (in the first ever Hell in a Cell match), but we got a little preview of those two matches in our big tag team main event on Explosion. Though both teams may not have been operating on the same page, their drive to hurt members of the other team led them to working together in spite of it all. With all the extra intensity this match was carrying, this was definitely a Match of the Year candidate, and perhaps the best tag team match we've seen in a GCW ring. Every man involved was firing on all cylinders, leading to over 17 minutes of fantastic tag team wrestling. Referee Jimmy Appleseed knew the ramifications of this match and therefore let a lot of things slide that he normally wouldn't. During the chaos at the end, Benoit and Bradley were tearing at each other on the floor, where Benoit demolished Bradley's skull with the ring bell. Benoit tossed Bradley back in awhile blood started trickling from Bradley's forehead. Bradley was out of it as Jericho locked him in the Walls of Jericho. With Bradley being unconscious, Appleseed had no choice but to call the match.

Chris Benoit and Chris Jericho defeated Randy Orton and Steve Bradley when Jericho defeated S. Bradley when S. Bradley passed out in the Walls of Jericho in 0:17:14.
Rating: **** 3/4

Using the ring bell during a match is not the type of action we would normally expect from Chris Benoit, which goes to show just how far Steve Bradley has pushed him. Bradley and Orton both left with a sour taste in their mouths, getting into a fight on the outside of the ring. As a result of this, we have learned that next week on Explosion, Steve Bradley and Randy Orton will go one-on-one in what could turn out to be a dangerous match for both men this close to Super Cade.

AMATEUR CHALLENGE FEATURING KURT ANGLE AND BROCK LESNAR
The final segment of the night was a bit different than the usual fare we get on Monday Night Explosion. Kurt Angle and Brock Lesnar are going to tangle for the World Heavyweight Title as the main event for Super Cade, but tonight, due to Angle's verbal masturbation a week ago, they would be meeting to showcase their amateur wrestling skills. Both men have a laundry list of amateur credentials. Brock Lesnar was a national collegiate champion from the University of Minnesota in the heavyweight division. Kurt Angle also won the national collegiate wrestling championship, but went one step further when he won an Olympic gold medal in the 1996 Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia. Lesnar had the size advantage, but Angle was more than game. I don't know if it was overconfidence, but Lesnar got the advantage of Lesnar on the first two exchanges, making Angle look a bit foolish both from the standing position and his Angle in the down position. Angle then grabbed the mic and said that Lesnar had illegally greased his body up and that he demanded Lesnar towel off. Lesnar, wanting to prove a point, wiped himself off despite the fact that Angle's claims were based in something nowhere near fact. It was Lesnar's turn to be in the down position, and Angle was confident that he would not be gotten the better of this time. Angle did start with the advantage, but Lesnar found his way out of it and got the upperhand. Angle was desperate not to be embarrassed again, and nailed Lesnar with a low blow, a highly un-Olympic like maneuver. Angle put the boots to Lesnar before trying to hit him with an Angle Slam. Lesnar got out of it though and caught Angle with an overhead belly-to-belly suplex. Lesnar then went for the F-5, but Angle jammed his fingers into the Monster From Minnesota's eyes, which will slow down any man, before throwing Lesnar to the floor. Angle grabbed the World Heavyweight Title and jacked Lesnar between the eyes. Lesnar was out, which made it easy for Angle to put Lesnar through the announce table with the Angle Slam as the show came to a close. With Lesnar's ribs already a question from his match with Rhyno at Mayhem, we can only speculate what kind of condition the number-one-contender is in after this heinous attack.

We inch closer and closer to Super Cade II on June 19th, and the card continues to get better and better. The Staples Center in Los Angeles, California is sold out, but you will still be able to join us on pay-per-view! Here is the card as of press time:

Petey could be trying to be the bigger man, or perhaps it's just a clever ruse.  If I were Storm I wouldn't be so quick to forgive either

Leaving Kash out to dry.  Ouchies for the Kashinator.

Dude... after that Haas should have to wrestle in the Halo :)

Good bit with the Hardys.  Doane should be happy he got mixed up in the middle of it for that match, otherwise it looks like he would've been down for the count.

I was wondering how Punk was going to come out of this defense with the title intact.  And holy shnikies!  Everyone died at the end.

Uh-oh.  HBK gets to finds his own ref?  This could end up badly for Eddie.  Just as bad or worse than his match tonight ended up.

Woo!  Benoit gets a little revenge by plastering Bradley with the bell.  Orton might not have as bad a time as everyone thinks if Benoit clocked Bradley hardenough.  :)

Nice ending to the show with Angle & Lesnar.  It was a little different which is good.  Lesnar's ribs can't be 100% going into the PPV in a few weeks.
