[GCW] Monday Night Explosion - 5/23/05

Snabbit888Posted on 03/18/06 at 20:43:23

We are live from the Taco Bell Arena in Boise, Idaho for Monday Night Explosion! With every passing moment we inch closer and closer to what promises to be the biggest night of the year in wrestling, Super Cade II! On tonight's broadcast, a huge main event as "The Crippler" Chris Benoit takes on Randy Orton! Also the Cruiserweight Title will be up for grabs as Frankie "The Future" Kazarian defends against "The Phenomenal" AJ Styles! If that wasn't enough, "Y2J" Chris Jericho will go one-on-one with "The Gore Machine" Rhyno! In addition, Lita will be the guest on Palumbo's Pizza Place, we will hear from Eddie Guerrero, and we will all bear witness to the official contract signing between World Heavyweight champion Kurt Angle and number-one-contender Brock Lesnar as they prepare for the main event at Super Cade!

Match #1
Abyss/Booker T/Goldust (w/ Sharmell) vs. John Bradshaw Layfield/The World's Greatest Tag Team (World Tag Team champions) (w/ Lamont)
We kicked the show off right with wrestling action, six-man tag style. This match was set up a week ago when both JBL and the World's Greatest Tag Team went into Commissioner Tommy Dreamer's office and tried to weasel out of their matches with Abyss and Booker T/Goldust respectively. Instead, Dreamer said the matches for Super Cade were still on in addition to this six-man tag team match. This was a great way to kick off the program as the crowd was really into all six wrestlers. JBL did all that he could to stay away from Abyss, immediately tagging in either Haas and Benjamin (much to their chagrin) if he found himself across the ring from the monster. Eventually Haas and Benjamin had enough of being the whipping boys and dropped to the floor when JBL tried this tactic, forcing him to face Abyss! The exchange didn't last long, but it was dominated by Abyss as JBL was looking for a place to hide before he managed to dodge an avalanche and tag out while Abyss was stunned. The WGTT tried to work over Abyss, but he is simply too dominant. Abyss would pick up the win for his team when in a brief flurry of offense, Haas went for his springboard crossbody block, but Abyss caught him and caught him in a devastating backbreaker that was enough for the win.

Booker T, Goldust and Abyss defeated The World's Greatest Tag Team (Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin) and John Bradshaw Layfield when Abyss pinned C. Haas after a backbreaker in 0:16:32.
Charlie Haas suffered a neck injury. He will be out for approximately 2 weeks.
Rating: ****

Charlie Haas was injured during that backbreaker as his neck was contorted a bit in a way it's not supposed to go. The diagnosis is a minor sprain and he won't be forced to miss any significant time. JBL meanwhile looked on horrified at the way that Abyss can absolutely take over a match. JBL is as big and mean as they come, but he's suffering from a bit of the limber tail going into Super Cade. He's going to have to figure out a way to boost his confidence if he's going to have a shot. Also, how is Charlie Haas' neck going to hinder him going into he and Shelton Benjamin's World Tag Team Title defense against Booker T and Goldust? Only time will tell.

TOMMY DREAMER ANNOUNCES THREE MORE MATCHES FOR SUPER CADE
We cut back to the office of Tommy Dreamer where he was standing by with the announcement of three more huge matches for Super Cade that were officially signed this week. The first match he announced was that a match has officially been signed that will see Chris Benoit and Steve Bradley lock up in a contest that has the potential to be a bloodbath. Dreamer went on to announce two title matches. The first will be for the North American Title as "The Alpha Male" Monty Brown puts his gold on the line against reigning Television champion CM Punk. Punk's TV Title will NOT be on the line. The other title match will be for the Cruiserweight Title, and it will be a six-man Cruiserweight Chaos match featuring current champion Frankie Kazarian, tonight's title challenger AJ Styles, Kid Kash, Paul London, Red, and Rey Mysterio Jr.! That match could be the sleeper for the night and has definite five star potential. With this announcement, an already great night keeps getting better and better!

Match #2
The Hurricane vs. Steve Bradley
The Hurricane is a world-class competitor, no doubt about it. You won't get many arguments on that point, but tonight he was fighting an uphill battle as he not only took on Steve Bradley, but Steve Bradley with a chip on his shoulder. Over the course of the year, Bradley has become more and more vicious, and that was never more evident than in this match. The superhero barely got a chance to get his footing as Bradley jumped him before the bell and never let up, finishing him off in short order.

Steve Bradley pinned The Hurricane with the Smashmouth in 0:04:04.
Rating: *** 1/4

Bradley wasn't content to merely win the match. Bradley hit The Hurricane with not one, but TWO more Smashmouths before the GCW Official Brigade broke it up. Bradley vs. Benoit is going to be a war.

Match #3
Rey Mysterio Jr. vs. "The Amazing" Red
What had the potential to be a great cruiserweight battle between Rey Mysterio Jr. and The Amazing Red never had a chance to get off the ground. It's obvious that Frankie Kazarian is scared of losing his title to Mysterio as it wasn't long into this match that he and Kid Kash ran in for the attack, which has been their MO the past few weeks. Mysterio tried to fight them off as the bell was called for, but he was quickly overwhelmed.

Rey Mysterio Jr. defeated Red by disqualification in 0:01:26.
Rating: * 3/4

The 3-on-1 attack was looking successful until AJ STYLES and PAUL LONDON ran in for the save. Styles and London came out with a flurry of offense, but the numbers soon overwhelmed them as Kazarian was able to hit both in the head with the Cruiserweight Title. The heel trio all stood over the fallen face contingent with Kazarian holding the Cruiserweight Title above his head. What he didn't was both Red and Kash looking at the title belt with the sense that they think they're soon going to be the ones holding it. I sense a little tension in this group.

EDDIE GUERRERO WANTS NOTHING TO DO WITH SHAWN MICHAELS
"Latino Heat" Eddie Guerrero came out for an interview to answer whether or not he was going to accept the challenge of Shawn Michaels for one more match. After running down HBK with verbal insults for a few minutes, Guerrero finally got around to addressing the challenge. Eddie basically said he wanted no piece of Michaels, saying, "I know for a fact that you don't have medical clearance to compete in the ring after the beating I gave you in January." That has been verified and it is true, the Heartbreak Kid has not been cleared to compete in the ring, but this interview had a thick layer of cowardice attached to it. Eddie may have found a way to not have HBK get his revenge.

Match #4
"Y2J" Chris Jericho vs. "The Gore Machine" Rhyno
This match had a very odd twist in it from the very start. Right before the bell was rang to start this contest, RANDY ORTON and his dad BOB ORTON JR. came out to the top of the ramp, and Randy had a microphone. The bell rang, and throughout the match, Randy Orton was giving commentary on the match, mostly in a derogatory fashion in Chris Jericho's direction. Jericho did the best he could to keep his composure, but it's hard enough to wrestle a beast like Rhyno on regular terms, let alone when your most heated rival is running you down on a live microphone. Orton gradually made his way closer and closer to the ring, running down Y2J the entire time until eventually Jericho had had enough. Orton got a little too close to the ring and Y2J was able to surprise him with a springboard plancha, propelling himself off the second turnbuckle to do so. The crowd popped as Jericho caught Orton with several right hands after this before returning to the ring. The cheers would soon turn to jeers though when Jericho turned back around and was devastated with the Gore from Rhyno. I'm sorry but you are just not getting up from that.

Rhyno pinned Chris Jericho with the Gore in 0:12:25.
Rating: *** 1/4

Jericho got a piece of Orton, but Orton seemed to get the last laugh here as Y2J lost the match. The Ortons left content with how things went down, while Jericho slowly made his way to the locker room, clutching his ribs and vowing his revenge.

PALUMBO'S PIZZA PLACE - SPECIAL GUEST - LITA
Chuck Palumbo's Pizza Place trucks on, this week having a very interesting guest in the form of Lita, Matt Hardy's former girlfriend and the woman who is now managing Matt's brother Jeff. Palumbo wasted no time in asking the question that is on everyone's mind, and that is, "Why?" Lita played coy, telling Palumbo that she didn't owe anyone an explanation and she was free to do as she chooses. To Palumbo's credit, he tried to needle an answer out of her, but Lita was having none of it, offering only that Matt Hardy was weak and couldn't fulfill her needs any longer. At this point Matt Hardy himself appeared, not making Lita very happy. Hardy said he didn't even want an answer, but rather he wanted to be rid of his brother once and for all, challenging Jeff to a Loser-Leaves-Town match for Super Cade! Lita fired back by telling Matt how worthless he was, how she was never satisfied with him, and in the biggest bombshell, revealed that she had been cheating on him! Matt Hardy flipped a gasket, saying that he was really going to kick Jeff Hardy's ass now. That is, if Jeff Hardy accepts the challenge.

Match #5
"Ravishing" Rob Conway vs. Doug Basham (w/ Shaniqua) vs. "Primetime" Elix Skipper
Star Quality, the Basham Brothers, and Elix Skipper and Low-Ki have been trading wins in tag team matches in recent weeks. Rob Conway, Doug Basham, and Elix Skipper represented their respective teams in a triangle match, one fall to a finish. This match was an exciting one as the three wrestlers didn't have to tag in and out as it was tornado rules. Any time that somebody would get a cover, the third man in the match would break it up. All three men took a lot of damage in this one, but because of the third man out, nobody could hit a move that would put this one in the books. In a match like this, finding the first window of opportunity is key, which is exactly what Doug Basham did. With Skipper's confidence back, he wrestled a fantastic match and looked like he was going to pull out the win when he hit Conway with the Play of the Day, but when he made the cover, Doug Basham flew off the top and nearly took Primetime's head off with a flying legdrop. This was enough to get him the win in Boise.

Triangle Match:
Doug Basham defeated Elix Skipper and Rob Conway when Doug Basham pinned Skipper after a flying legdrop in 0:07:15.
Rating: *** 3/4

This was a huge step for the Bashams as these three teams jockey for position within the tag team division. It will also be interesting to see how Elix Skipper bounces back after suffering this loss.

Match #6
Cruiserweight Title Match
Frankie "The Future" Kazarian (c) vs. "The Phenomenal" AJ Styles
With Tommy Dreamer's announcement earlier, both Frankie Kazarian and AJ Styles were going to be a part of the Cruiserweight Chaos match at Super Cade for the Cruiserweight Title. Styles would love to go into that match as the reigning champion, and he had that opportunity as the gold was up for grabs. With all of the bad blood that has developed between the respective factions in the cruiserweight division, every punch and kick had a little extra behind it. Styles' plan from the get-go was obviously to hit the Styles Clash, which he tried early and often, but Kazarian is crafty and found clever and creative ways to escape throughout. With the men involved, we knew it wouldn't be long before KID KASH and RED made their presence known. Referee JD Sanders went to cut them off at the pass by jumping to the floor and demanding that they turn around and head back to the locker room. They resisted, giving Kazarian the time to unleash his plan. Kazarian bought a bit of time with a big enziguiri so that he could reach into his tights for a pair of brass knuckles. The Future took a big swing, but Styles ducked and hit the Pele' kick, dislodging the knux from the champ's hand. The Phenomenal One grabbed the knux, but before he had any chance to use them, referee Sanders returned his focus to the ring and saw Styles standing with knuckle dusters on his hands. The ref questioned Styles, who vehemently denied that the brass knuckles were his. During this argument, Kazarian regained his bearings and surprised Styles with a small package, stealing a three count and a successful title defense.

Frankie Kazarian pinned AJ Styles after a small package in 0:11:31.
Rating: *** 1/2
(Frankie Kazarian retained the GCW Cruiserweight Title.)

If this match was decided on points, it's hard to argue that AJ Styles would have been the winner. However in the pros, matches are decided on points but by the final pinfall, and Kazarian showed that as Cruiserweight champion that he is willing to do anything to keep the gold around his waist. He's going to need to use everything in his resources to walk out of Los Angeles still Crusierweight champion at Super Cade though for Cruiserweight Chaos.

LANCE STORM AND PETEY WILLIAMS CROSS PATHS
Lance Storm was backstage talking to a tech person when Petey Williams approached him. Storm clenched a fist as if he were ready to fight, but Petey was there with a much softer tone. Petey told Storm that Teddy Hart and Dawn Marie were gone, and that he was trying to make up for his past transgressions, offering up an apology for his actions against Storm, namely for taking part in the attack that put him out of action for at least two extra months. Storm is obviously not in a position yet where he is willing to forgive, blowing Petey off and telling him to get out of his face. I know that Lance Storm has reason to be upset with Petey Williams, but this appeared to be a sincere attempt at an apology. Maybe Storm was just in a bad mood tonight, but regardless, Petey left without any further incident.

Match #7
"The Alpha Male" Monty Brown (North American champion)/"The Teen Phenom" Ken Doane vs. Sean O'Haire/Jeff Hardy (w/ Daffney & CM Punk)
Ken Doane owes a large measure of gratitude to Monty Brown. If it wasn't for Brown coming to the rescue a week ago, there is no telling what kind of damage the Prophecy would have inflicted on the youngster. A tag match was signed for this week, but CM Punk, being the master of mind games that he is, pulled himself from the match at the last minute and put Jeff Hardy in his place, choosing instead to hang around ringside and watch the festivities. You could tell from the opening bell that this got in the head of the Alpha Male, who is counting down the days until he can get his hands on CM Punk (27 and counting). Every time Brown would have the advantage, he would turn his attention to Punk at ringside, who looked on with a stoic disposition. This would ultimately cost their team when the Teen Phenom was the legal man in the ring with Hardy. Punk wandered over toward Brown which got the North American champion's attention in a big way. It also got referee Antonio Santangelo's attention who was looking to cut off a ringside brawl at the pass. In doing so though, he missed Daffney slipping a railroad spike to Jeff Hardy who used it in a flying forearm to knock Doane out cold. Before Brown knew what had happened, Hardy got the pin on the Teen Phenom.

The Prophecy (Jeff Hardy and Sean O'Haire) defeated Ken Doane and Monty Brown when J. Hardy pinned K. Doane after a flying forearm in 0:06:35.
Rating: ****

Brown jumped in the ring to prevent any more damage to Doane, but the damage had been done. Brown had a look of utter rage on his face as he demanded that Punk get in the ring, but Punk is too smart for that. The longer Punk can make Brown wait, the more in his head he is going to be.

LAMONT GOES TO DO JBL'S DIRTY WORK
Poor poor Lamont. I'm sure being John Bradshaw Layfield's personal limo driver pays well, but when you're working for a guy like JBL, you're often put into unenviable positions by your boss. None could have been more unenviable for Lamont than having to speak with Shaniqua about getting her to call off JBL's match for Super Cade against Abyss, a match that Shaniqua signed for her former client while the Cabinet was still in existence. Shaniqua took a sick pleasure in listening to a nervous Lamont struggle through his words as he made the request. Shaniqua finally had enough as she got deathly serious, yelling at Lamont (almost causing him to soil himself) before finishing with, "You tell your boss that there is NO WAY IN HELL that I'm calling off this match!" Lamont quickly scurried away, but not before almost knocking himself out when he pushed on the door that opens with a pull. Lamont finally got himself out of the room, allowing Shaniqua to revel in scaring the ever-living crap out of him.

Match #8
MAIN EVENT
"The Crippler" Chris Benoit (w/ Nancy Benoit) vs. Randy Orton (w/ Bob Orton Jr.)
We had what promised to be a great technical matchup in our main event as the former World Heavyweight champion Chris Benoit took on the former North American champion Randy Orton. Benoit and Orton alike have huge matches ahead of them at Super Cade, but that didn't detour them from going all out at 110% for this match, like they always do. Despite the things going on outside of the wrestling world for Benoit, he managed to keep his focus in tact during this match, brutalizing Orton from pillar to post throughout much of this contest. With his father in his corner at all times though, Orton always has an equalizer in Cowboy Bob. Though Nancy Benoit isn't exactly as happy with Benoit as she's ever been, she was still out there supporting her husband though, warning him of several ambush attacks from Bob Orton Jr.

As the match developed, it became a contest to see who could get their finishing move first. On more than one occasion, Benoit went for the Crippler Crossface and Orton went for the R.K.O. Neither was finding much success as both men are known for being students of the game and undoubtedly had their opponent well scouted. However, both the Crippler Crossface and R.K.O. can come out of nowhere, and it just happened to be Orton who got his move to hit first. Benoit was rolling after he surprised Orton with the triple German suplexes, and signaled that the swandive headbutt was next. Orton was playing a bit of possum though as he was already up to his feet when Benoit jumped off, catching him with the R.K.O. on the way down! Benoit is a tough guy, but that will floor absolutely anyone.

Randy Orton pinned Chris Benoit with the R.K.O. in 0:10:46.
Rating: *** 1/2

Benoit's night was about to get much worse though as STEVE BRADLEY was in the ring now, viciously striking away at the Crippler. Orton, once he regained his bearings, joined in on the beating until CHRIS JERICHO ran in for the save, getting both Orton and Bradley out of the ring. We have since learned that next week on Explosion, Benoit and Jericho will team up to take on Orton and Bradley.

KURT ANGLE VS. BROCK LESNAR CONTRACT SIGNING
After that great main event match, there was only one more thing to take care of this evening, but it was a big one. A table was set up in the center of the ring with two chairs across from each other, as well as a podium that Commissioner Tommy Dreamer stood behind. Brock Lesnar was introduced first, followed by World Heavyweight champion Kurt Angle. Both men were dressed in dress attire, which was a good sign as Dreamer started by explicitly telling both men that this was to remain civil and that any altercation would result in punishment for both men. Lesnar was shown the contract first and after reading it through, signed without hesitation. It was Angle's turn, but he first grabbed the microphone and informed everyone that in his estimation, Lesnar was unworthy of a World Heavyweight Title shot and that as an Olympic gold medal winner, he was way out of Lesnar's league. "Sure, you won a national title, Brock, but I did that too, AND I won an Olympic gold medal!" Hearing this gave Dreamer an idea. Dreamer told Angle and Lesnar that they need to bring their gear next week because they will be participating in a special "Amateur Challenge." Since both Angle and Lesnar have great amateur credentials, Dreamer is going to give Angle a chance to put his money where his mouth is in this amateur exhibition. Angle was not too thrilled with this, obviously preferring to just talk the talk. Eventually though, Angle would sign the contract and it was official! Kurt Angle vs. Brock Lesnar for the World Heavyweight Title. We knew this had all been far too civil though as Angle tried to sneak around Lesnar to get in a suckerpunch, but Lesnar saw it coming, spun around quickly ready to fight. Angle almost jumped out of his shoes as he quickly fled the ring. Brock Lesnar is definitely in Angle's head. The show came to an end with these two competitors engaging in a long distance staredown.

With the announcements of Tommy Dreamer, the card for Super Cade II, live from the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California on June 19th, continues to flesh out, looking as follows:

World Heavyweight Title - Kurt Angle (c) vs. Brock Lesnar

North American Title - "The Alpha Male" Monty Brown (c) vs. CM Punk (Television champion)

World Tag Team Titles - The World's Greatest Tag Team (c) vs. Booker T/Goldust

Cruiserweight Chaos for the Cruiserweight Title - Frankie "The Future" Kazarian (c) vs. Paul London vs. "The Notorious K.I.D." Kid Kash vs. "The Phenomenal" AJ Styles vs. "The Amazing" Red vs. Rey Mysterio Jr.

Hell in a Cell - "Y2J" Chris Jericho vs. Randy Orton

"The Crippler" Chris Benoit vs. Steve Bradley

Abyss vs. John Bradshaw Layfield

Good opener.  Good thing Haas won't be out for any real amount of time.  That one could've screwed ya a bit

Three great matches for the PPV.  Can it get much better?  I submit that it cannot.

Bradley obliterates the Hurricane, but that's no indication of his match with Benoit.  Hurricane is a good wrestler... but he's no Chris Benoit.

Good bit with the cruisers.  Tension rocks my socks.

For some reason, I doubt Eddie will get out of his match with HBK that easily.

Damn those Ortons.  Randy is really asking for it.  Y2J is no slouch, Orton better remember that.  You'd think he would've after their previous matches.

OoOoOoOo.... interesting Pizza things this week.  I'm hoping Jeff accepts, but I imagine even if he does, there will be some loophole for the loser.

Good win for the Bashams.  That might have put a bit of a brick in Star Quality's path.

I'm interested to see if this was a real apology or not.  I'm thinking not.

Good main event, I didn't expect a clean win.  I'm really looking forward to the tag match it set up.

Good stuff as always
