[GCW] Monday Night Explosion - 5/2/05

Snabbit888Posted on 02/18/06 at 18:39:01

April showers are supposed to bring May flowers, but as we make our way into the fifth month of the year, the only thing GCW is bringing is Mayhem! Welcome ladies and gentlemen to the Pit in Albuquerque, New Mexico, our first trip to the state, for Monday Night Explosion! With Mayhem looming in two weeks time, we had a huge night of action starting with our main event. Rey Mysterio Jr. obtained a pinfall over Randy Orton in a tag team match a week ago. This is not sitting well with Orton going into his no-disqualification match with Chris Jericho at Mayhem, so he will meet Mysterio tonight! Also on the big night of action, Eddie Guerrero goes one-on-one with Kid Kash, Matt Hardy meets Eric Angle, and AJ Styles and Paul London team up to take on the Amazing Red and Cruiserweight champion Frankie Kazarian!

Match #1
The Hurricane (w/ Abyss) vs. Shelton Benjamin (w/ Charlie Haas)
We kicked off the broadcast with a bit of a preview for Mayhem as The Hurricane took on Shelton Benjamin, one half of the World Tag Team champions. Each man had his respective partner down at ringside. Charlie Haas was trying his best to interfere at any juncture he could, but any time he even got close to The Hurricane, Abyss would close in like a protective mother lion would to protect her cubs. Haas would eventually take the risk and interfere, tripping the Man In Green up as he hit the ropes. Abyss nearly blew a gasket as he howled out and began chasing Haas around the ring! The crowd was cheering wildly as Haas ran for his life with a look of absolute terror painted across his face. During the commotion, The Hurricane caught Benjamin with a running neckbreaker drop and picked up the win.

The Hurricane pinned Shelton Benjamin after a running neckbreaker drop in 0:09:11.
Rating: *** 1/4

In the past couple weeks, Abyss has a pinfall over Haas and The Hurricane has a pinfall over Benjamin. All they need is one more pinfall at Mayhem and they will be the brand new World Tag Team champions.

LANCE STORM NEEDS A PARTNER FOR TONIGHT
Lance Storm has singles victories over both members of Team Canada since his return from a shoulder injury, but they have both been by disqualification and he has suffered two beatdowns at the hands of Dawn Marie's men. Storm has a tag team match against them tonight, but the problem was that he was in need of a partner. Storm hunted down Chris Jericho and asked him to be his partner. Storm and Jericho have a long history together, training in the famous Hart Dungeon together and even wrestling their first matches as professionals against one another. Jericho agreed to be Storm's partner, and the match will happen later tonight.

Match #2
Fatal Fourway Elimination Match
Booker T/Goldust (w/ Sharmell) vs. Star Quality vs. The Basham Brothers (w/ Shaniqua) vs. "Primetime" Elix Skipper/Low-Ki
Four of the top teams in GCW went at it in our next match which was fought under elimination rules. Elix Skipper and Low-Ki exchanged some words before the match with Skipper insisting that he was going to start this match, wanting to prove that his losing streak as of late is merely a fluke and that he was going to turn things around. Skipper got his way, but he was so happy about winning the argument, that he quickly forgot he needed to be trying to win a match. Skipper turned around right into the massive Matt Morgan, who dropped him with a Moonlight Bomb and in a mere 20 seconds, Elix Skipper had been pinned and he and Low-Ki were eliminated! Skipper was furious and complaining to the referee that there had been a fast count and wanted Low-Ki's backup on this, but Low-Ki just shook his head and went to the back.

This left three teams, and this settled into a good match. Shaniqua's Basham Brothers were in a foul mood for some reason now and were hitting hard, really making their opponents pay. They were trying to have their way with Matt Morgan, but the Blueprint's power helped to thwart their attacks. Shaniqua had finally seen enough and directed Doug Basham to grab a chair, which he used to smash Morgan over the head with. The Bashams were disqualified, but I don't think that was of much concern to them as they were content in hurting someone. Morgan was groggy after the brutal chair shot, but he was able to continue the match which was now down to Star Quality vs. Booker T and Goldust.

While Star Quality has looked great in recent weeks since officially deciding to team, nothing was going to stop Booker T and Goldust tonight. And with the added disadvantage of Matt Morgan having been paintbrushed with a chair, Conway had to wrestle much of the final minutes on his own. Booker T and Goldust continue to hone their tag team skills and did a good job of wearing down Conway before Goldust hit him with the Shock Treatment and got the 1-2-3.

Four Corners Match:
Booker T and Goldust defeated The Basham Brothers (Doug Basham and Danny Basham), Elix Skipper and Low-Ki and Star Quality (Matt Morgan and Rob Conway):
x M. Morgan beat Skipper via a Moonlight Bomb in 0:00:20
x M. Morgan beat Danny Basham via disqualification in 0:09:47
x Goldust beat Conway via the Shock Treatment in 0:15:12
Rating: *** 3/4

After the match, the team fan favorite teams exchanged handshakes in a good sign of sportsmanship. Booker T and Goldust are putting themselves in a good position to challenge for the World Tag Team Titles with this win here.

ERIC ANGLE PAYS FOR THE SERVICES OF RHYNO
With Eddie Guerrero constantly stalking him, Eric Angle is a bit on edge. In an attempt to make himself more comfortable, he met with Rhyno backstage to work out a deal with him for tonight. Angle wanted a sense of security tonight, so he obtained the services of Rhyno for the evening, with the specific directions to keep Guerrero away from him. Angle also made mention of "extra incentives" if Rhyno went above and beyond. We were left wondering what exactly that meant as we cut back to the ring.

Match #3
Brock Lesnar vs. "Chicken Boy" Justin Credible (w/ The Colonel)
Justin Credible knows that he is going to have a special opponent at the pre-game show for Mayhem in two weeks, but he also was unsure of who his opponent was going to be here. When his opponent turned out to be BROCK LESNAR, the already unhappy disposition of Credible became even worse. Lesnar is a highly driven man at this point, and credible couldn't do anything to even slow him down. As the Colonel yelled out incoherent bits of advice, lesnar mowed through Credible and finished him off with an F-5 in timely fashion.

Brock Lesnar pinned Justin Credible with the F-5 in 0:02:06.
Rating: ***

BROCK LESNAR HAS SOME WORDS OF WARNING FOR RHYNO
After his quick and efficient victory, Brock Lesnar grabbed the microphone and had some words for Rhyno, telling him that last week was only the beginning. He went on to say that Kurt Angle had better ask for his money back because there was no chance in hell Rhyno was even going to SURVIVE at Mayhem, let alone take him out. Even if Rhyno's business is flourishing now, after Mayhem, his mercenary-for-hire career could come to a premature end.

Match #4
"Latino Heat" Eddie Guerrero vs. "The Notorious K.I.D." Kid Kash
Eddie Guerrero is desperate to get his hands on Eric Angle as he believes that he is this new incarnation of Black Tiger, but he might have trouble doing so tonight because Angle has hired Rhyno for protection. Latino Heat still had a match to worry about though as he took on impressive newcomer Kid Kash. These men both have similar styles and Kash was able to match up with Guerrero very well, hitting many of his big moves. Eddie is Eddie though, and he had an abundance of Latino Heat ready for Kash. In the end, Kash attempted his Dead Level brain buster, but Guerrero reversed it into the Three Amigos. The Frog Splash was next and Guerrero had his hand raised.

Eddie Guerrero pinned Kid Kash with the Frog Splash in 0:06:41.
Rating: *** 1/2

Not more than two seconds after getting the duke over Kid Kash, Eddie Guerrero was on the mat clutching his ribs as RHYNO came from out of nowhere and drilled him with the Gore! aybe this was the extra incentive that Eric Angle was referring to earlier. Rhyno was out of there as quickly as he had arrived leaving Eddie to slowly recover and vow revenge on Eric Angle.

PALUMBO'S PIZZA PLACE - SPECIAL GUEST - JOHN BRADSHAW LAYFIELD
Chuck Palumbo's ridiculous interview show was back again this week, this time with special guest John Bradshaw Layfield. JBL first spoke of disbanding the Cabinet and parting ways with Shaniqua. JBL said he thought that Shaniqua, being the manager of the year from 2004, would have more to offer for his career, but she turned out to be a "huge bust." "Shaniqua is about as good a manager as Lamont is a fighter." JBL then cocked his arm back like he was going to punch Lamont, who immediately curled up into a ball on the mat. Talk then turned to Mayhem where JBL said that it was an outrage that he wasn't on the card yet, seeing as how he is the greatest singles wrestler on the planet. He expressed his dismay that he hadn't received a World Heavyweight Title shot since he'd been in Global Championship Wrestling while Ken Doane had received one within three weeks of his debut. "That little punk hasn't paid his dues in this business like I have. He is getting the golden opportunities that I rightly and justly deserve." JBL challenged Doane for a match at Mayhem, citing that he was going to "teach that little punk a lesson in respect!" As of press time, Ken Doane has neither accepted nor declined JBL's challenge. Finally, JBL had some words for Abyss. "I see you have a little buddy now, and that's all well and good. Good for you. Abyss has a friend. I know you hate me, Abyss. I represent everything you can never be. I'm wealthy, I'm powerful, I'm well respected. You know what you are, Abyss? You're a FREAK! You're a mutilated, deformed monster! And I guarantee you that if you ever, EVER try to dance with me, I'll mangle you even more." While JBL is definitely strong in his words, he has shown in the past that he's not that anxious about actually stepping into the ring with Abyss.

Match #5
Lance Storm/"Y2J" Chris Jericho vs. Team Canada (w/ Dawn Marie)
Lance Storm has been waiting months for this opportunity. The vicious attack by Teddy Hart and Petey Williams at the encouragement of Dawn Marie set Storm back by months because of his shoulder injury. Storm has had singles matches with both members of Team Canada the past two weeks, but thanks to interference, both have ended with disqualifications and the Calgary........ Alberta, Canada native suffering a beatdown. Storm got himself a partner in the form of former World Heavwyeight champion "Y2J" Chris Jericho. Jericho and Storm have teamed in years past, and it looked as if they hadn't even missed a beat. Storm and Jericho were cruising until Hart reversed a suplex attempt by Storm into a Fujiwara armbar. Storm didn't tap out, but he was in a bad way as that shoudler may not be at 100% quite yet. Team Canada made use of frequent tags and good double teaming to work over Storm's shoulder even more. Storm was clearly hurt but luckily he was able to make a tag after a spinning leg lariat from Hart was off the mark and connected with Petey Williams. Jericho came in a house of fire and started dishing out forearms and leg lariats of his own. Jericho showed exactly why he was the World champion by ridding the ring of Teddy Hart, dropping Petey with a DDT, and hitting the Lionsault. Lance Storm was back up at this point and begging for the tag, but Jericho didn't see him as he locked the Walls of Jericho on Petey who promptly tapped out.

Chris Jericho and Lance Storm defeated Team Canada (Teddy Hart and Petey Williams) when Jericho made P. Williams submit to the Walls of Jericho in 0:07:41.
Rating: **** 1/4

I'm not sure that Lance Storm fully got the revenge he wanted tonight, but he and Jericho were victorious. Now hopefully Storm is on his way to bigger and better things. After lending Storm some help, Jericho now goes on to Mayhem, Randy Orton, and no disqualification rules.

CM PUNK CHOOSES WHO WILL FACE MONTY BROWN AT MAYHEM
Television champion CM Punk and his Prophecy were back in what appeared to be the boiler room. Not the traditional meeting place, but this isn't a traditional group. Monty Brown has made it quite clear that he wants to get his hands on the Prophecy and has offered any member of the group a shot at his North American Title if they will face him at Mayhem. While Brown undoubtedly wants CM Punk as he's the one who damaged his face with a fireball, but he's going to have to wait as Punk has chosen Sean O'Haire, telling O'Haire that he "WILL destroy Monty Brown." Punk said that at Deadly Draw when the Alpha Male eliminated all three members of the Prophecy, he tried to alter fate, to change their destiny, and for that, he must be punished in the worst way. When CM Punk holds a grudge, he holds it will all his will and fury. Just ask Ryan Niemiller and Rey Mysterio Jr.

Match #6
"The Phenomenal" AJ Styles/Paul London vs. Frankie "The Future" Kazarian (Cruiserweight champion)/Red
A ton of bad blood in this tag match that had a lot of interesting aspects to it. AJ Styles and Paul London don't particularly like each other, but they have common enemies in the form of Frankie Kazarian and Red. Despite the general distrust, Styles and London worked exceptionally well together against the well oiled machine of Kazarian and Red. These four put on a great match for sure, and the fans of Albuquerque were loving it, counting along with the nearfalls and false finishes. This match literally could have gone either way, but it was the willingness of Red to cheat that helped him get the win. Red flipped himself out of the Styles Clash attempt from Styles and hit him with a rolling reverse cradle. Red got a firm hold of the tights and with his body shielding it from the referee's eyes, got the 1-2-3.

Frankie Kazarian and Red defeated AJ Styles and Paul London when Red pinned Styles with a rolling reverse cradle in 0:08:45.
Rating: **** 1/4

If it wasn't bad enough for Styles and London that they got screwed out of a win here, KID KASH ran in, grabbed London off of the apron and drilled him hard into the ring post. Kash then pulled the ring steps out some and put London's head in between the steps and the post while Kazarian hit the Wave of the Future on Styles in the ring. Kash got a running start and dropkicked the stairs, causing London's head to get smashed between the steel. It looks like Kash is trying to make good on his promise to Kazarian.

Match #7
Matt Hardy (w/ Lita) vs. Eric Angle (w/ Rhyno)
Eric Angle is walking on eggshells these days, never sure when Eddie Guerrero is going to strike again. Being as such, Angle obtained Rhyno's services to watch his back at ringside during his match with Matt Hardy. I'll admit that I thought Rhyno would get more involved in this match, but he stayed in the aisleway and watched for any sign of Eddie Guerrero. Eric Angle wasn't as crisp as he usually is, possibly showing that Latino Heat is even affecting the way he is wrestling in matches. He looked like he'd gain a victory though until BROCK LESNAR was out from the back and fighting with Rhyno for the second week in a row! Angle was freaking out in the ring as his protection was now gone, but not nearly as much as he was when EDDIE GUERRERO started slowly sauntering out from the back. Angle yelled at Eddie, telling him to stay out of his business, but Latino Heat forged ahead with a huge smile on his face. Angle had his back turned to Hardy as he screamed at Eddie to leave him alone, allowing Hardy to catch him by surprise with a crucifix and get an upset win!

Matt Hardy pinned Eric Angle after a crucifix in 0:07:16.
Rating: *** 1/2

Things got much worse for Angle though as Eddie Guerrero ran in and start punching away at him, until Angle was finally able to put enough distance between himself and Guerrero that he could make an escape. Angle got away now, but he's not going to have that luxury at Mayhem.

KURT ANGLE AND CHRIS BENOIT SIGN THE CONTRACTS FOR MAYHEM
World Heavyweight champion Kurt Angle and "The Crippler" Chris Benoit (with Nancy) met backstage with Commissioner Tommy Dreamer to iron out the details of the contract for their World Heavyweight Title match at Mayhem. Angle reminded Benoit that the only reason he is getting this title shot is under the condition that the charges against Steve Bradley are dropped and he is released from jail. Benoit said that the charges were officially dropped this morning and that Bradley is soon to be a free man, if he's not already. You could see Nancy physically cringe when her husband said this. Angle signed the contract after hearing this news, as did Benoit. Angle warned Benoit that this little power play may have gotten him a title shot, but it won't get him the title. It was strange that we actually got to see a contract signing that didn't degenerate into a brawl.

Match #8
MAIN EVENT
Rey Mysterio Jr. vs. Randy Orton (w/ Bob Orton Jr.)
We had a great main event on our hands tonight as Rey Mysterio Jr. went one-on-one with Randy Orton, who once again had his father down at ringside with him. Orton demanded this match after Mysterio pinned him in a tag team match a week ago. Mysterio has developed a wonderful wrestling style to help him overcome the fact that in almost every match he is had a great size disadvantage. Mysterio can fly with the best in the world, and he used his vast array of moves to keep away from Orton. But over the past few months, Orton has developed quite the nasty edge to his style and he made sure to put a hurting on Mysterio. Orton is normally pretty vicious, but when he feels like he has to make an example out of someone, it is turned up tenfold. This was a great match with both men taking their licks and getting several nearfalls, but in the end Orton would counter a springboard attempt from Mysterio into a brutal looking R.K.O. to get a hard fought win.

Randy Orton pinned Rey Mysterio Jr. with the R.K.O. in 0:10:57.
Rating: **** 1/4

The show went off the air with Randy Orton and Bob Orton Jr. standing tall over Rey Mysterio Jr. Mysterio has nothing to be ashamed of as he took Orton to the limit, but he got caught in a great counter and that was all she wrote.

With tonight's show in the books, the landscape for Mayhem is starting to become clear. The Thomas and Mach Center in Las Vegas, Nevada is nearly sold out for this May 15th event. Here is what the card looks like as of press time:

World Heavyweight Title Match - Kurt Angle (c) vs. "The Crippler" Chris Benoit

North American Title Match - "The Alpha Male" Monty Brown (c) vs. Sean O'Haire

World Tag Team Title Match - The World's Greatest Tag Team (c) vs. Abyss/The Hurricane

Brock Lesnar vs. "The Gore Machine" Rhyno

No Disqualification Match - "Y2J" Chris Jericho vs. Randy Orton

"Latino Heat" Eddie Guerrero vs. Eric Angle

Matt Hardy vs. Jeff Hardy

I figured Benjamin would pick up the win here.  If WGTT thought they had problems before Abyss & Hurry are on a roll

Hey Lance I'll be your partner... oh... Jericho is good too...  :'(

Star Quality looked good and I thought they'd take it, but Goldy pulls it out... hopefully not literally...

YAY! Chicken boy!  Oh... he's facing Lesnar.  2 minutes, wow, I think thats a record for a chicken.  Cause he's not a man he;s a chicken boo...

Rhyno is quite the force.  He can come out of anywhere and attack anyone... for the right price.  Everyone has to start looking over their shoulder if they have an enemy.

now JBL has crossed the line.  No one bad mouths lamont!   i have a bad feeling for JBL is Doane accepts the challenge.

good showing from Jericho & Storm, hopefully it's not he last time they team in GCW

Hmmmm... Sean O'Haire... can't say I'm surprised, but I guess I was hoping for something different.  Still, it should prove entertaining.

Kash hits the ring again post match, but we still don't know if London & AJ have a third yet.  Things will get bad for them quick if they don't find one.

good break for Hardy, he needs to be 100% against his bro at the PPV

Benoit isn't getting laid for a loooooooooong time... hope that title keeps him warm at night ;)

Good main event.  Orton looks good going into his match with Jericho... as does Jericho.

PPV looks good as always
