[GCW] Monday Night Explosion - 4/25/05

Snabbit888Posted on 02/09/06 at 00:06:52

GCW came to Tulsa, Oklahoma for the first time as the Tulsa Convention Center was filled for Monday Night Explosion! On tonight's big event, Brock Lesnar will be in singles action against Danny Basham! Also, Lance Storm takes on Petey Williams, Chris Benoit goes one-on-one with Eric Angle, Abyss and The Hurricane battle Booker T and Goldust for the number-one contendership to the World Tag Team Titles, and Monty Brown defends the North American Title against the Prophecy's Sean O'Haire. But we also have a double main event in store for you as we will see a tag match with Randy Orton and Chris Jericho on opposite sides teaming with the partner of their choice, as well as Ken Doane shooting to be the youngest World Heavyweight champion in history as he takes on champion Kurt Angle!

KURT ANGLE RESPONDS TO CHRIS BENOIT
After the opening pyro for Explosion went off, "Medal" kicked up through the speakers and out came World Heavyweight champion Kurt Angle, along with Eric Angle and the World's Greatest Tag Team. Angle grabbed a microphone and said that he had given it much thought and that he was confident that he could beat Chris Benoit one more time, and giving him the title shot was worth having his right-hand man out of prison. So it is official: at Mayhem, Kurt Angle will defend the World Heavyweight Title against "The Crippler" Chris Benoit. Angle warned Benoit though that he may not even make it to Mayhem because Eric Angle was going to stretch him later tonight. Focus moved on to the World's Greatest Tag Team. Haas and Benjamin relayed that they were the greatest tag team in the world (hence the name) and that since GCW's first show they have proved it. "We don't care who it is at Mayhem. We will walk out the World Tag Team champions." Eric Angle grabbed the stick next and proceeded to list reasons why Eddie Guerrero is out of his mind. "I've told you once Eddie and I'll tell you again: I am *NOT* the Black Tiger!" Eric's eyes constantly drifted over to the ramp, fearing that Guerrero might show up. Kurt Angle took the microphone back one last time to address Brock Lesnar. "Did you get my message last week, Brock? It's funny what a few green backs will get you. Just call Rhyno a mercenary. Don't mess with me, Lesnar. I am the World Heavyweight champion, and not you, not Benoit, not ANYBODY is going to take this gold from me."

Match #1
Brock Lesnar vs. Danny Basham (w/ Shaniqua)
Speaking of Lesnar, he was in action to kick off the wrestling portion of our show as he took on Danny Basham. Basham has primarily been a tag team wrestler in his time in GCW, but he has the skills to get it done in singles competition as well. Just not tonight against Brock Lesnar. The Monster From Minnesota is being fueled on pure anger right now, especially after Kurt Angle revealed that he was responsible for Rhyno's attack last week. Lesnar took it out on Basham, and had little trouble in putting him away with the F-5.

Brock Lesnar pinned Danny Basham with the F-5 in 0:03:07.
Rating: ** 1/2

With Lesnar on a tear like he is, I would hate to be in the shoes of Rhyno or Kurt Angle. It has been officially announced that at Mayhem, Brock Lesnar will be meeting Rhyno. With the Gore Machine being on Angle's payroll, this is a risky match for Lesnar to be taking on, but Brock is not one to back away from a challenge. Rhyno is an all out beast though and will take Lesnar to the limit.

Match #2
Lance Storm vs. Petey Williams (w/ Teddy Hart & Dawn Marie)
A week ago in Lance Storm's first match back from injury, he won against teddy hart via disqualification when Petey Williams interfered. This week, he was facing Williams to try to exact his revenge on Team Canada, but he knew it would be an uphill battle yet again when Teddy Hart accompanied his partner to the ring. Storm was weary after what happened to him a week ago, and he had one eye on the outside of the match the entire time. Storm was wanting to put this match away in quick fashion and managed to hit a superkick straight on the jaw of Williams, but Hart ran in and broke up the count, and we had a disqualification for the second week in a row.

Lance Storm defeated Petey Williams by disqualification in 0:02:07.
Rating: **

Storm tried to defend himself, but with the odds essentially 3-on-1 (Dawn Marie was getting her shots in too), Storm was quickly overwhelmed and left laid out for the second week in a row. Storm's mission for revenge is hitting many roadblocks.

THE WORLD'S GREATEST TAG TEAM ALMOST GET INTO A SCUFFLE WITH ABYSS AND THE HURRICANE
Backstage we saw the World's Greatest Tag Team walking, their World Tag Team Titles over their respective shoulders. They were being rude and insulting much of the backstage staff. As they were walking, they passed Abyss and The Hurricane and began taunting them. Abyss and The Hurricane tried to shrug it off, but the abrasive WGTT were relentless, taunting them to the point where Abyss stepped into their face. Confronted by the monster, Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin suddenly changed their tunes, backing off and walking away. WGTT already has Booker T and Goldust ready to tear their heads off, so they need to be careful who else they add to that list.

Match #3
"The Crippler" Chris Benoit (w/ Nancy Benoit) vs. Eric Angle
"The Crippler" Chris Benoit has gotten himself an opportunity to regain the World Heavyweight Title at Mayhem, offering up Steve Bradley's freedom for Kurt Angle to agree to the match. Though I'm sure she is happy about her husband having a chance to climb the mountain one more time, Nancy Benoit has to have mixed feelings about the man who brutally attacked her and put her in the neck brace she is wearing now being shortly released from prison, especially at the decision of her husband. Nancy is standing by her man though as she joined Benoit down at ringside for his match against Eric Angle. Benoit has been in some tough battles over the past few months, losing more than he would like, but he has kept himself in the title picture and showed us exactly why he is considered one of the best in the world here. Since Eric Angle was pinned for the first time (by Benoit, no less), many experts are starting to accuse Angle of being the classic case of an overachiever and hinting that he may have already peaked. Angle looked good here though, except that he was constantly looking out toward the crowd and making sure that Eddie Guerrero wasn't coming after him. As soon as Angle got the advantage, Guerrero did show up, running in and smashing him with a chair to bring this match to a close.

Eric Angle defeated Chris Benoit by disqualification in 0:06:09.
Rating: * 3/4

Eric Angle was out cold after that chair shot, and strangely Eddie left after the one shot. We know now that these two will meet at Mayhem, so maybe Latino Heat is saving some of his aggression for May 15th.

RANDY ORTON CONDUCTS BUSINESS WITH RHYNO
Randy Orton needed a tag team partner for tonight in his match against Chris Jericho and Y2J's partner, and he had his sights set on his partner being Rhyno. "I heard that your services are for sale, so let's talk business." Rhyno seemed disinterested until Orton flashes some green backs in his face. Rhyno smiled as the two walked away to conduct their business.

Match #4
Number-One Contenders Match
Booker T/Goldust (w/ Sharmell) vs. Abyss/The Hurricane
Booker T and Goldust are itching for another shot at the World's Greatest Tag Team and their World Tag Team Titles, but to get that shot at Mayhem, they first were going to have to get by the impressive new duo of Abyss and The Hurricane. Abyss' popularity has skyrocketed, especially after he finally broke free of Shaniqua, JBL and the now defunct Cabinet, and he has the Man In Green around as his little buddy. Both of these teams are highly eccentric, but the fans love them none the less and were treated to a great tag team bout. Booker and Goldust came into this match with the plan to keep The Hurricane in the ring whenever they could and make him beat them rather than Abyss. Abyss did get into the match for brief sections, and when he did, he dominated the action. However it looked as though Booker T and Goldust were on their way to securing victory late as they had The Hurricane trapped in the ring. Goldust had hit the Curtain Call in the ring on the superhero, but he didn't go for a cover when he saw Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin coming down to the ring. Booker and Goldust invited the WGTT into the ring. Though Haas and Benjamin didn't get physically involved, their presence was distraction enough as The Hurricane got back to his feet and popped the Golden One in the back with a dropkick, sending Goldust crashing into Booker T, knocking Booker to the floor. The Eye of the Hurricane followed and this one was in the books.

Number-One-Contenders-Match:
Abyss and The Hurricane defeated Booker T and Goldust when Hurricane pinned Goldust with the Eye Of The Hurricane in 0:08:11.
Rating: **** 1/4

Thanks to the distraction of Haas and Benjamin, it will be Abyss and The Hurricane challenging for the World Tag Team Titles at Mayhem. The WGTT was proud of itself for costing their rivals a match, but their bravado soon soured when they saw Abyss indicating in the ring that the titles would be coming around he and The Hurricane's waists.

Match #5
North American Title Match
"The Alpha Male" Monty Brown (c) vs. Sean O'Haire (w/ Daffney)
Monty Brown is still feeling the ill effects of the fireball that CM Punk through at him at Deadly Draw, but he is showing a lot of guts by still defending his North American Title, tonight against one of Punk's Prophecy underlings, Sean O'Haire. Brown still had the bandage on his face covering the burns he suffered, and much like Randy Orton did last week, O'Haire honed in on them and made Brown suffer. O'Haire is one of the few men in GCW with the size to throw Brown around effectively, and he did so in this one. Brown fought back though and got out of the way of O'Haire's Seanton Bomb, which ultimately led to the Pounce and a successful title defense.

Monty Brown pinned Sean O'Haire with the Pounce in 0:11:18.
Rating: **** 1/4
(Monty Brown retained the GCW North American Title.)

Monty Brown didn't even get to have his hand raised before CM Punk and Jeff Hardy were in the ring pounding on him. Brown was out in the middle of the ring before the Prophecy took their leave. Brown has demanded that he get his hands on the member of the Prophecy at Mayhem, citing that he doesn't care who it is. The match will take place, but we won't know who he's facing until Punk makes the decision a week from now.

PALUMBO'S PIZZA PLACE - SPECIAL GUEST - MATT HARDY
Chuck Palumbo's goofy show, Palumbo's Pizza Place, was next, with special guest Matt Hardy joining him. Palumbo asked him about Jeff Hardy's challenge from a week ago, wanting a match with Matt at Mayhem. Matt said that the question had been eating away at him all week, whether or not he should wrestle his own flesh and blood. Matt's instinct was to say no, but he knew Jeff and he knew how he was, saying that this would never end until Matt agreed to wrestle him. Therefore, at Mayhem, for the first time in GCW history it will be brother vs. brother when Matt Hardy and Jeff Hardy collide.

KID KASH OFFERS FRANKIE KAZARIAN A DEAL
Kid Kash found Cruiserweight champion Frankie Kazarian and Red backstage before Red's match with AJ Styles. Kash was there to make a deal with Kazarian, saying that he would help him take care of his little problem with AJ Styles and Paul London. Kazarian is crafty though, and knew this wasn't just a gesture of good will and asked what the catch was. Kash said that once Styles and London were taken care of, Kazarian would give the Notorious K.I.D. a shot at the Cruiserweight Title. The Future conversed with Red for a moment before offering his hand to Kash, which Kash shook. It looks like Styles and London now have a third party to worry about.

Match #6
"The Phenomenal" AJ Styles (w/ Paul London vs. Red (w/ Frankie "The Future" Kazarian)
There is a lot of bad blood in the cruiserweight division right now, an we saw two of major forces collide as AJ Styles and The Amazing Red met one-on-one. Red had the Cruiserweight champion Frankie Kazarian along with him at ringside, to which Styles countered by bringing Paul London. Despite some jawing and taunting on the outside, London and Kazarian neutralized each other and made this a clean match. Both men were able to do what they do best in this one. Late in the match, Kazarian saw the match slipping away from Red so he jumped on the apron, only to see an irish whip attempt reversed and Red go crashing into him. Red stumbled back right into the Pele kick from Styles, who then hit the spiral tap for the 1-2-3.

AJ Styles pinned Red after a spiral tap in 0:06:34.
Rating: ****

After the match before London could get in the ring to celebrate with Styles, KID KASH ran out, grabbed London by the hair, and drove him into the ringpost. Kash got a few more shots in before Styles saw what was happening and chased him off. London was all right, but he did have a nice knot on his head. As impression as Styles and London are, they very well could need a third on their side in this feud.

Match #7
"Y2J" Chris Jericho/Rey Mysterio Jr. vs. Randy Orton/Rhyno (w/ Bob Orton Jr.)
Randy Orton and Chris Jericho were allowed to pick their own partners for this tag team match. Orton cut a deal with Rhyno for the Gore Machine to be his partner. A smart choice, but Rhyno was none too happy when Y2J's partner was revealed to be the man who beat him at Proving Ground a month ago, Rey Mysterio Jr. Despite neither of these teams having much experience teaming together, this was a fantastic tag team match and the crowd ate up every minute of it. Jericho and Mysterio know each other very well from years passed and they used that to their advantage with some nice tandem offense. Orton and Rhyno didn't have quite the same continuity, but that's okay when your team consists of the man many claim will be THE superstar of the future and the Manbeast, full speed ahead Rhyno. After over 20 minutes of fantastic action, things suddenly became grim for the face contingent as Rhyno Gored Jericho on the outside right into the guardrail. Mysterio looked as if he was going to be the victim of a 2-on-1 attack, but BROCK LESNAR came in and brawled with Rhyno, knocking him over the guardrail and fought with him through the crowd. When Orton was throwing a fit that his partner had been taken out of the match, he didn't see Mysterio come in with a springboard dropkick that knocked him throat first onto the middle rope. The 6-1-9 and West Coast Pop soon followed and Mysterio had pinned Randy Orton, despite Bob Orton Jr. trying to distract referee Jimmy Appleseed.

Rey Mysterio Jr. and Chris Jericho defeated Randy Orton and Rhyno when Mysterio Jr. pinned R. Orton with the West Coast Pop in 0:23:07.
Rating: **** 1/2

This is not how Randy Orton wanted to get his road to the no-disqualification match at Mayhem with Jericho. Randy Orton has asked for a match with Rey Mysterio Jr. to attempt to avenge this loss, and he will have that opportunity next week on Explosion from the Pit in Albuquerque, New Mexico. After this match Jericho was a bit shaken up after that Gore, but he was able to celebrate the victory with Mysterio afterwards.

JUSTIN CREDIBLE CAN'T GET A MINUTE TO HIMSELF
Justin Credible burst into Commissioner Tommy Dreamer's office and quickly closed the door behind him, looking more than a little frazzled. "What's wrong?" Dreamer asked him, to which Credible replied, "You have to do something about the Colonel. He won't leave me alone!" Dreamer told Credible to settle down and listen up. "You might be a little annoyed by the Colonel now, but not nearly as much as I'm annoyed by you. I brought the Colonel in just for you, Chicken Boy, and you don't seem to be embracing the spirit of this. Oh, I know! I've got an idea. I'm going to show you just how important the Colonel can be. I'm going to set you up with a special match at Mayhem." Credible was excited about the prospect of getting back on pay-per-view, but Dreamer quickly burst his bubble by telling him it would be on the pre-game show. "I have a special opponent in mind for you, and you're going to be thankful that you have the Colonel's services."

Match #8
MAIN EVENT
World Heavyweight Title Match
Kurt Angle (c) vs. "The Teen Phenom" Ken Doane
When Ken Doane signed his GCW contract a few weeks ago, I bet he never thought that in only his third singles match he would be challenging for the World Heavyweight Title. Doane came on the seen a couple of weeks ago and turned things upside down when he scored a huge upset over Kurt Angle in a non-title match (even with an assist from Eddie Guerrero, that is an impressive feat). As the match began, Doane looked to be totally out of his league. Angle was out wrestling him, out classing him, and making it pretty obvious who was the World champion and who was the 19-year old rookie. Doane got a few good shots in early, but Angle cut his momentum off quickly and controlled the pace. About midway through the match, Doane reversed a German suplex attempt with a go-behind and hit a German of his own for a nearfall out of nowhere. It didn't win Doane the title, but it certainly won him an ass beating from Angle. Angle pulled the straps down and went to work, aggressively dismantling Doane with high impact suplexes and painful submissions. Angle had a couple of opportunities to put Doane away, once after a piledriver and once after the Angle Slam, but both times the World champion lifted the youngster's shoulders off the mat. This would come back to bite Angle in the ass as he later cockily went for the Ankle Lock. He took too much time to do so allowing Doane to kick him off and send Angle crashing shoulder first into the ringpost. Doane mounted a comeback, hitting a huge shoulderbreaker and a powerslam, both netting him a nearfall. As Doane gained momentum, the crowd was actually believing that we could see the upset of the century here. Doane looked like a kid on the brink of achieving his dream, but the thoughts of him winning were premature when he missed a kneedrop from the second rope. Angle wisely snapped the Ankle Lock on the challenger. Doane fought as hard as he could to get out, using the crowd's cheers to pull some strength, but in the end the pain was too overwhelming as referee Petey Pluck called for the bell when Doane didn't respond.

Kurt Angle defeated Ken Doane when Ken Doane passed out in the Ankle Lock in 0:09:06.
Rating: *** 3/4
(Kurt Angle retained the GCW World Heavyweight Title.)

Kurt Angle had a much tougher time than he thought he would in retaining the World Heavyweight Title, but I guess it's the result that matters at the end of the day. You can't say enough about Doane's effort though as the rookie came within a hair of being the World Heavyweight champion. His night may not have been tonight, but if this match is any indication, the future is bright for the Teen Phenom.

With another Explosion in the books, we have some matches officially signed for Mayhem, the May 15th event that will come to you from the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada on pay-per-view!

Feedleback time

I'm still glad to see Storm back.  Williams & Hart better realize who they're dealing with.  I don't think thinks will end well when they aren't able to save eachother's butts.

Who the hell taunts Abyss... seriously.  If they are going to be that dumb they aren't going to be holding onto the belts for much longer.

lol, I love wrestler mentality.  "My wife is in a neckbrace... the perfect place for her is ringside while my attention is drawn away from her while wrestling" :)  It's those little things like that where you'd think a wrestler would learn, but doesn't that are fun.  ;)

If Rhyno is that hard up for money he could be the perfect spokesmen for Rhino Truck Bed Lining. :)

WGTT was going to have trouble either way.  I guess they'll find out if they made the right decision after the PPV when they either are or aren't looking at titles around their waists.

I want to see Punk/Brown at the PPV, but I'm thinking he's not going to pick himself.  Hey, if you ever decide to go hollywood with your storylines you could do a parody of the movie Face Off with Punk & Brown where Punk is punished by facing Brown's burnt, disfigured face switched onto his head.  They we could have CM Brown and Monty Punk... I'll go sit in the corner now... :)

Did I call it or did I call it?   ... no... seriously, did I?  I can't remember. :D  I'm a wondering who they'll pick to even up the sides.

Alright, Orton/Mysterio at the pit next week.  Will Everyone Gets Laid be there too? (Does anyone even get that reference?)

I seriously want some official GCW Chicken Boy merchandise.

Doane lasted longer than I thought he would.

I'm really liking the PPV.  You always deliver the goods.
