[GCW] Monday Night Explosion - 4/18/05

Snabbit888Posted on 02/05/06 at 03:43:45

We are one night removed from Deadly Draw, and the road to Super Cade II in Los Angeles has begun, making its first stop at the Frank Erwin Center in Austin, Texas for Monday Night Explosion! On tonight's show, we will see in our main event, the North American Title on the line as Monty Brown defends against the former two-time champion, Randy Orton! Also, the now former Cruiserweight champion Paul London will go one-on-one with undefeated newcomer, Kid Kash! We will also see Chris Jericho take on John Bradshaw Layfield, CM Punk defend the Television Title against Low-Ki, and the in-ring return of Lance Storm as he takes on Teddy Hart of Team Canada! All of this, and the debut of Palumbo's Pizza Place! Let's get right to it!

THE NUMBER-ONE CONTENDER IS HERE
The show kicked off with the Monster From Minnesota and the new number-one contender after winning Deadly Draw last night, Brock Lesnar, coming out for an interview. With the amount of cheers he was receiving, it took awhile for Lesnar to even get to speak. When he got to speak, he said that despite Angle's best efforts to put him out of commission, he came back and did exactly what he said he was going to do and that was win Deadly Draw. "You can't run and you can't hide, Kurt. At Super Cade, there will be no escape, and I will be the new World Heavyweight champion!" After continuing to mention how Angle's days were numbered, out of nowhere RHYNO was in the ring nailing Lesnar from behind! What in the world was the Manbeast doing out here? Lesnar tried to fight back, but Rhyno cut him off with a kick below the Mason Dixon Line. The Gore followed after that and Lesnar was wiped out. There are very few men that can manhandle Lesnar like that and Rhyno is one of them. But why this vicious attack? We weren't going to get those answers tonight as we were informed that Rhyno got in his car and made a hasty retreat right away.

Match #1
Jeff Hardy (w/ Daffney) vs. Justin Credible (w/ The Colonel)
Our opening contest pitted two unpopular wrestlers as Jeff Hardy of the Prophecy and "Chicken Boy" Justin Credible went one-on-one. Credible looks completely lost in the ring these days, distraught over the fact that not only is he being referred to as "Chicken Boy," but appointed manager, the Colonel, won't leave him alone. Despite the Colonel's words of wisdom, Credible was unable to turn his fortunes around as a flying dropkick put an end to Credible's night.

Jeff Hardy pinned Justin Credible after a flying dropkick in 0:06:51.
Rating: *** 3/4

JEFF HARDY CHALLENGES HIS BROTHER
After the contest, Daffney brought Jeff Hardy a microphone. Jeff said that his brother Matt had tried to hold him back for years, going back to when they were kids growing up in Cameron, North Carolina. He continued by saying that Matt has always kept him in his shadow, but now was his time to break free of it. "You and me, brother, one-on-one at Mayhem. I'm going to make you suffer like you've made me suffer my whole life." As of press time, Matt Hardy has neither accepted nor declined this challenge, but he will be the guest on Palumbo's Pizza Place next week where he will address this situation.

Match #2
"Primetime" Elix Skipper vs. "The Teen Phenom" Ken Doane
Ken Doane exploded on the scene a week ago making his debut on Explosion, defeating World Heavyweight champion Kurt Angle (with the help of Eddie Guerrero) in a non-title match. Elix Skipper was confident that he could end his losing streak and take some wind out of the sails of the Teen Phenom and challenged him to a match. Doane looked crisp in this one, if not a little lost. He is still adjusting to the spotlight of GCW, and he hasn't gotten sure footing yet. Skipper however, despite his recent losing streak, is a seasoned veteran and in all honesty, took Doane to school for much of this match. Skipper got a little cocky during this match, pulling Doane's shoulder's off the canvas more than once when potentially he could have won the match, which would turn out to be a big mistake when Doane got out of the way of an Asai moonsault attempt, which would lead to the Doane-nation and a 1-2-3.

Ken Doane pinned Elix Skipper with the Doane-nation in 0:09:48.
Rating: ** 1/4

The rookie picks up another victory, and Skipper was not happy about it, leaving the ring in a huff. After the match, Joey O'Donnell and Brian Wagner let us know that the rookie will have the chance of a lifetime as next week in our main event, he will face Kurt Angle one more time, but this time with the World Heavyweight Title up for grabs. If lightning can strike twice for Doane, he could become the youngest World champion in wrestling history.

JBL IS NOT CONCERNED WITH SHANIQUA'S THREATS
Backstage Mario Riviera caught up with John Bradshaw Layfield (with Lamont) to ask him what he thought about Shaniqua's words of warning last night. "Oooh... I'm so scared. Shaniqua thinks she can intimidate me? That's impossible. I am a wrestling GOD. Even if Shaniqua does have some plan for me, we all saw with the way she handled the Abyss situation that it would fail anyway. So, Mario Riviera, am I worried about Shaniqua's warning? No I'm not." Shaniqua has done some crazy stuff in the past, so I wouldn't be so calm about this if I were JBL.

Match #3
Goldust (w/ Sharmell) vs. Shelton Benjamin (w/ Charlie Haas)
Goldust was fighting an uphill battle here from the very get-go. With Booker T out until next week with the injuries he sustained from the World's Greatest Tag Team's attack at Deadly Draw, he didn't have his partner here for backup in this singles match against Shelton Benjamin. Benjamin, however, had Charlie Haas on his side and as they have shown time and time again, they were not shy about using illegal tactics behind the referee's back. Goldust did all that he could, but the odds were stacked against him and a brutal superkick put this one away.

Shelton Benjamin pinned Goldust after a superkick in 0:03:01.
Rating: ***

The beating didn't stop for Goldust as Benjamin and Haas took liberties on him until the GCW Official Brigade broke things up. Booker T will be back next week, and it has been announced that Booker and Goldust will meet Abyss and The Hurricane next week with the winners challenging for the World Tag Team Titles at Mayhem.

Match #4
Lance Storm vs. Teddy Hart (w/ Dawn Marie)
It has been seven months since we have seen Lance Storm in the ring after he suffered a severe torn rotator cuff which was further damaged by Dawn Marie and Team Canada. Storm had been waiting for this moment for months as he took on Teddy Hart in singles action. Storm has kept himself in great shape and is a master of the game, so although there was ring rust, it was minimal. Storm is not known for being an aggressive superstar as he's generally cool, calm, and collected in the ring, but we saw someone with revenge on his mind taking it to Teddy Hart. Storm was almost too aggressive and he nearly paid dearly for it when he missed a diving shoulderblock in the corner and hit hard on his previously injured arm. Hart worked the arm, but Storm fought back and locked on the Maple Leaf, but it was broken up by Petey Williams.

Lance Storm defeated Teddy Hart by disqualification in 0:07:43.
Rating: *** 3/4

At Dawn Marie's urging, Team Canada left Lance Storm laying after Petey hit the Canadian Destroyer and Hart nailed the Hart Attack. Storm may have won in his return, but he can't be happy with the way this went down.

PALUMBO'S PIZZA PLACE - SPECIAL GUESTS - FRANKIE KAZARIAN AND RED
We next got to witness the premiere of Palumbo's Pizza Place, the new interview segment run by "The Italian Stallion" Chuck Palumbo. How this guy got an interview segment is beyond me, but that's not the point. The area to the side of the entranceway was adorned with a set made to resemble a pizza place, I can only assume because as a stereotypical Italian, Palumbo runs a pizza parlor on the side. Palumbo's inaugural guests were the new Cruiserweight champion Frankie "The Future" Kazarian and his new aprtner in crime, the Amazing Red. Palumbo opened by sucking up to his guests and congratulated Kazarian on his title win. Kazarian thanked Palumbo, but said that he wasn't in a good mood. "What I want to know is why Paul London got a chance to be in Deadly Draw and potentially become the number-one contender for the World Heavyweight Title last night when I singlehandedly beat his ass earlier in the night! Why wasn't it me? Oh, I know, it's because the "powers that be" look at London like he's some sort of golden boy, the future of GCW, when it's painfully obvious to everyone that Frankie Kazarian is the real future!" Kazarian continued, but he was soon cut off when AJ STYLES ran out of nowhere and spear tackled Kazarian! Styles wailed away at Kazarian with rights and lefts until Red intervened with a running enzuigiri. Kazarian and Red put the boots to the Phenomenal One until PAUL LONDON ran out and cleared the ring. After a brief staredown, Styles and London exchanged a tentative handshake to a pop from the crowd. They may not completely trust each other, but it looks like London and Styles are joining forces to battle Kazarian and Red.

Match #5
"Y2J" Chris Jericho vs. John Bradshaw Layfield (w/ Lamont)
A great match featuring a mismatch of styles as the technician Chris Jericho took on brawler John Bradshaw Layfield. Since a rocky start in GCW, JBL has come into his own and is showing himself to be the dominant force he has the capability of being (despite his troubles with Abyss). Jericho too is an impressive superstar though, including his recent reign as World Heavyweight champion. Jericho knew he wouldn't be able to compete with the power of JBL, so he was doing all that he could to stay out of a slugfest, using his aerial prowess to keep JBL at a distance. The thing with JBL though is that once he gets his hands on you, he makes you pay for it, and Y2J paid all right by being on the receiving end of the Last Call fallaway slam and a vicious power bomb that garnered a nearfall. Jericho fought back though with the Breakdown and a Lionsault which got him nearfalls, which is when BOB ORTON JR. got involved. Orton Jr. jumped up on the apron, but Jericho saw him and hit him with a springboard dropkick to knock him to the floor. The distraction was enough though as when Jericho turned around, it was directly into the Stock Market Crash.

John Bradshaw Layfield pinned Chris Jericho with the Stock Market Crash in 0:08:52.
Rating: *** 1/4

The Ortons just won't seem to leave Chris Jericho alone! What started off as a friendly rivalry between two supposed "friends" is quickly degenerating into a blood feud. Orton made his move; now we wait to see if Jericho will counter.

ERIC ANGLE DENIES BEING BLACK TIGER, BUT EDDIE GUERRERO DOESN'T BUY IT
"Latino Heat" Eddie Guerrero, who came within an eyelash of winning the World Heavyweight Title 24 hours prior, came out for an interview next and it was no secret what he would be discussing. Last night a man dressed as the Black Tiger interfered in his match and caused Guerrero to fall short of winning the World Title. A similar scenario happened last summer when Black Tiger attacked Guerrero for weeks, ultimately driving Latino Heat to the point of insanity that he's at now. It ended up being Eric Angle the first time, so Eddie deduced that this time was no different. And all the facts pointed to Eric Angle as he has the history of being Black Tiger and Tiger helped Eric's brother Kurt retain the World Heavyweight Title. Eric Angle came out and proclaimed his innocence, saying he had nothing to do with it and that he was busy preparing for Deadly Draw at the time. Eddie wasn't buy it (nor was anyone in the Frank Erwin Center) as he jumped out of the ring and went after Angle, who wisely retreated to the safety of the locker room.

Match #6
Television Title Match
CM Punk (c) (w/ Daffney) vs. Low-Ki
Due to his tremendous performance at Deadly Draw, lasting over 49 minutes and making it to the final four, he was granted a Television Title shot against champion CM Punk. Low-Ki, unlike his teammate Elix Skipper, has seen some success since they've dipped into the singles wrestling water, and the former Cruiserweight champion was dead set on adding the Television Title to his resume'. Low-Ki punished Punk throughout this match with his martial arts. To Punk's credit, however, despite having a reputation for needing the Prophecy's help to win, took the beating and dished it right back. This was a fantastic title defense and Low-Ki appeared to be on his way to victory after he hit a Tidal Crush. Low-Ki called for the Ki Krusher, but Daffney jumped up on the apron. Low-Ki didn't hit her, but he sure scared her with a roundhouse kick into the ropes. When he turned back, Punk was up and nailed him with a DDT. The Pepsi Plunge followed and Punk retained the TV Title in a great match.

CM Punk pinned Low-Ki with the Pepsi Plunge in 0:14:00.
Rating: ****
(CM Punk retained the GCW Television Title.)

Low-Ki may not have won the title, but he put on a great showing and will be in future title considerations. CM Punk, though his methods are strange, is proving to be a great Television champion. His days could be numbered though once Monty Brown gets a hold of him.

Match #7
Paul London vs. Kid Kash
Paul London's highly successful reign as Cruiserweight champion may be over, but he's not sitting back and sulking about it as he was in action tonight against the undefeated Kid Kash. This was the match of the night and a potential match of the year. Kid Kash, despite being an abrasive jerk, is showing that he is going to be a force to reckon with in GCW for a long time to come. London and Kash worked well together and they exchanged counter after counter and wowed the crowd with a tremendous match. In the end, a great counter of a clothesline attempt, London slipped behind Kash and hit a German suplex. London bridged up and was able to keep Kash's shoulders down for the three.

Paul London pinned Kid Kash after a German suplex in 0:12:54.
Rating: **** 1/4

Kash didn't take too kindly to being handed his first loss and nailed London from behind before drilling him with a tiger suplex. The beating continued until Kash got a chair from ringside and wrapped it around London's ankle. Much like London did before though, AJ STYLES came in and intervened, chasing Kash from the ring before any more damage could be done.

KURT ANGLE TALKS WITH CHRIS BENOIT
Kurt Angle approached Chris and Nancy Benoit backstage, and immediately explained to Benoit that he was there for business so Benoit could "put [his] guard down." The Crippler asked Angle what he wanted, and Angle said he was there to discuss dropping the charges against Steve Bradley. nancy fired out right away that there was no chance in hell, but Angle kept presenting his case, mentioning that he needs Bradley by his side because he's his right hand man, and as the World Heavyweight champion, he needs his enforcer with him at all times. You could almost literally see the light bulb turn on over the Rabid Wolverine's head as he said, "I want a World Title shot." Angle (and Nancy too) were taken aback by this, but Angle told him he'd think about it and have an answer next week.

Match #8
MAIN EVENT
North American Title Match
"The Alpha Male" Monty Brown (c) vs. Randy Orton (w/ Bob Orton Jr.)
Both Monty Brown and Randy Orton had mixed nights at Deadly Draw. Orton got a win over Chris Jericho, but thanks to Jericho's pre-match attack, Orton lasted less than two minutes in Deadly Draw and from the #2 position, was the first man eliminated. Brown successfully defended his North American Title against Eric Angle and had a great run in Deadly Draw, but his night ended suddenly when after eliminating CM Punk, Punk threw a fireball in his face and caused his elimination. Brown's face was heavily wrapped, including his left eye being almost completely covered. In this sport, wearing a bandage is like wearing a bullseye, and Orton wisely (if not immorally) focused much of his attack on Brown's injury. The Alpha Male is lucky he is as strong as he is because his occasional big move helped keep him alive in this match. It wasn't helping Brown though that Bob Orton Jr. was getting involved whenever he could hitting a cheap shot or distracting the referee so that his son could hit a cheap shot. After Orton Jr.'s numerous interferences, CHRIS JERICHO had had enough and stormed to the ring, spinning Bob around and nailing him with a right hand. Randy didn't appreciate this as he jumped to the floor and chased after Jericho, but Jericho ran to the back. Orton went back in the ring, but ran directly into the Pounce. One, two, three. Monty Brown is still the North American champion.

Monty Brown pinned Randy Orton with the Pounce in 0:08:41.
Rating: *** 3/4
(Monty Brown retained the GCW North American Title.)

Monty Brown retains his title with an assist given to Chris Jericho. As Orton and Jericho can't seem to stay out of each other's business, Commissioner Tommy Dreamer has signed the first match for May 15th's pay-per-view spectacular, Mayhem, which will come to you from the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. Hoping to finally settle the score, Chris Jericho and Randy Orton will meet in a match that will be competed under no-holds-barred rules. With the hatred that each of these guys have developed for the other, this one has the potential to be a blood bath. The only other match signed thus far is the World's Greatest Tag Team defending the World Tag Team Titles against either the team of Booker T and Goldust or Abyss and The Hurricane, which will be decided in a match next week. Also on the card next week, Ken Doane attempts to become the youngest World champion in wrestling history when he hopes lightning can strike twice against Kurt Angle.
americamamushiPosted on 02/08/06 at 13:18:48

Me thinks Angle has hired some insurance... or rather more insurance.  I think Rhino could make a neat permanent addition to Team Angle if it comes to that, but then he'd run the risk of taking Bradley's position.

Credible lost.  Can't say I'm surprised.  Well... I could... but i'd be lieing.  hee hee Palumbo with an interview segment.  The funny just don't quit in GCW.

I was expecting Doane to pick up the win, and not just because Skipper has been lagging behind after going single.  You might have said before, but if you did I don't remember, what is the "Doane-nation"?

Now that Booker will be back next week, will Goldust be 100% after the post-match beating tonight?  Things don't look good for them going into the Abyss/Hurricane match, but I think as long as they can stay away from Abyss, they can pull it off.  100% or no 100%.  Though either team will put up a good challenge for the tag titles at the PPV

Yay Lance Storm!  It's funny that Petey hit the Canadian Destroyer on Storm, because IRL Storm has said he doesn't like it because it's too fake looking for his tastes. :)  I'm interested to see if Storm picks up a partner (and who it'd be) to take on Petey & Teddy.

Great debut for the Palumbo's PP segment.  Which is what I'm going to call it because it makes me giggle like a school girl.

Gotta love "Cowboy" Bob.

I think I have an educated guess as to who the Black Tiger is this time around, but I don't know if I should say just yet.

I had figured Kash would've kept his win streak alive.  Nice of Styles to help seeing as how they'll be united against Red & Kazarian.  I wonder if Kash will be, or already is in on this too.

Good ending to the Orton/Brown match.  Jericho & Orton are heating up like a... a... hot plate... at... no, no... they're heating up like a hobo in the sun.  Yeah... references to the homeless are always appropriate.
