[GCW] Monday Night Explosion - 3/28/05

Snabbit888Posted on 01/13/06 at 16:20:52

The Georgia Dome was at near sellout capacity as Global Championship Wrestling invaded Atlanta for Monday Night Explosion! We are getting ever closer to April 17th's Deadly Draw, and tonight, eight more names would be announced for the match! Not only that, but we had an astounding main event as two unlikely teams would go at it. On one side, Chris Jericho would team up with a man he has had numerous problems with, the number-one-contender, "Latino Heat" Eddie Guerrero! On the other side, World Heavyweight champion Kurt Angle teams up with his former partner in the Sensationals and a man he absolutely despises (and vice versa), Randy Orton! In addition to this, Rey Mysterio Jr. meets Rhyno in a huge grudge match! And in a rematch from Proving Ground, Abyss and The Hurricane team up to take on the Basham Brothers! All this and more on Monday Night Explosion!

CHRIS JERICHO CHALLENGES RANDY ORTON
The show kicked off with "Y2J" Chris Jericho coming out. After dishing out a few clever insults, Jericho challenged "Ricky Morton" to a match at Deadly Draw. Randy Orton came out and seemed to be dodging the challenge of the former World Heavyweight champion. "What is in this for me, Jericho? I proved I could take you out with no problems last week. I'm already in the Deadly Draw match, so what do I get from kicking your ass?" Jericho continued to goad Orton, challenging his manhood about ducking him. Eventually Orton had enough and accepted Jericho's challenge, and the match will happen at Deadly Draw!

Match #1
Television Title Match
CM Punk (c) (w/ Daffney) vs. Low-Ki
CM Punk had a mandatory Television Title defense tonight against one of the toughest men pound-for-pound in the world today, Low-Ki. Punk brought the entire Prophecy down with him, but before the match began Sean O'Haire and Jeff Hardy were ordered to the back at the request of Commissioner Tommy Dreamer. Daffney was allowed to remain at ringside as she has an official manager's license. Punk remained stoic even after his backup was sent back, while it seemed to energize Low-Ki. Low-Ki doesn't necessarily win every match, but if you're facing him, you know you're going to be sore the next day. Punk was no exception as Ki punished him with hard kicks. Punk used his cunning to keep himself in the match, and after dodging a handspring elbow in the corner, caught Low-Ki with a sick looking pumphandle tombstone to retain his title.

CM Punk pinned Low-Ki after a pumphandle tombstone in 0:08:36.
Rating: *** 1/2
(CM Punk retained the GCW Television Title.)

Though he never lets it show, this was an important confidence building win for CM Punk as he showed that he can win without the help of the Prophecy. He'll need to use all the cunning he has to keep his title against Rey Mysterio Jr. at Deadly Draw.

MARIO RIVIERA WITH STEVE BRADLEY
Mario Riviera had Steve Bradley backstage for an interview, and immediately asked him the question that is on everyone's mind: "Why did you assault Nancy Benoit last Sunday?" Before Bradley could formulate a response, several Atlanta police officers arrived and put him under arrest! Bradley was handcuffed as the officers read him his rights and he was taken away. We have learned that Chris Benoit and his wife are pressing charges against Steve Bradley for what he did, and that Bradley is being held without bail in a prison in Atlanta. We will have more information for you as it becomes available.

Match #2
Star Quality vs. Justin Credible/"The Italian Stallion" Chuck Palumbo
Justin Credible and Chuck Palumbo have teamed up before, but they had nothing even close to tag team continuity going for them tonight as they took on the up-and-coming team of "Ravishing" Rob Conway and "The Blueprint" Matt Morgan, collectively known as Star Quality. Palumbo and Credible couldn't get on the same page, and it didn't take long for Star Quality to hit the Ladder of Success (Morgan lifts opponent up and Conway comes off with a blockbuster) and Star Quality was in the winner's circle.

Star Quality (Matt Morgan and Rob Conway) defeated Chuck Palumbo and Justin Credible when Conway pinned C. Palumbo after the Ladder of Success in 0:03:02.
Rating: ***

Another impressive display from this brand new tag team. They string together a few more wins like this and they will be right in line for a World Tag Team Title shot.

JOHN BRADSHAW LAYFIELD HAS A WARNING FOR THE BASHAM BROTHERS
JBL, moments before his match with Goldust, was backstage with the Cabinet. In regards to his match with Goldust, JBL said, "What better way to prepare to kick one freak's ass than by kicking another freak's ass!" He went on to tell the Bashams that they have been faltering way too much recently and that they better get their act together, starting by destroying Abyss and The Hurricane tonight. Shaniqua assured JBL that he has nothing to worry about and that the Bashams will get the job done.

Match #3
Goldust (w/ Sharmell) vs. John Bradshaw Layfield (w/ Shaniqua & Lamont)
JBL was in a foul mood as things have not been going his way recently. JBL's life has been overrun by his hatred of Abyss as he seems dead set on eliminating Abyss from GCW. He was looking to exorcise some of that frustration in this match against the quirky Goldust. JBL came out quickly, clubbing the Bizarre One with huge forearms and slams. Goldust might march to the beat of his own drummer, but he is a skilled veteran himself and kept himself in this match by using his homoerotic antics to keep JBL uncomfortable. These tactics proved to get JBL angry, resulting in Goldust's head almost being taken off his body with the Stock Market Crash.

John Bradshaw Layfield pinned Goldust with the Stock Market Crash in 0:07:18.
Rating: *** 1/4

An important win for John Bradshaw Layfield as the Cabinet had been struggling. Maybe this will get some momentum going as the Bashams face Abyss and The Hurricane later on tonight.

Match #4
"Primetime" Elix Skipper vs. Kid Kash
Kid Kash is still undefeated since joining GCW as a member of the cruiserweight division. He had a big challenge here though as he took on former World Tag Team champion Elix Skipper. Skipper and Low-Ki, unable to challenge for the World Tag Team Titles as long as the World's Greatest Tag Team are champions, are trying their hands in singles competition, but thus far, Skipper is having a bit of trouble adjusting. He looked good in this match though, keeping one step ahead of Kash through most of this match. However upon going for the New School rope walk, Kash pulled him off violently by his arm. Moments later, Kash hit the Dead Level and this one was over.

Kid Kash pinned Elix Skipper with the Dead Level in 0:04:59.
Rating: ** 1/4

Kid Kash is making quite a name for himself already in GCW. We found out during this match that he would be participating in Deadly Draw. Imagine how big it would be to his career if within a month of his debut, he became the number-one-contender to the World Heavyweight Title!

KURT ANGLE AND RANDY ORTON TRY TO MAKE A GAMEPLAN
In what was a very tense few minutes, World Heavyweight champion Kurt Angle and Randy Orton, bitter rivals but now forced to be tag team partners, formulated a strategy for tonight's main event against "Latino Heat" Eddie Guerrero and "Y2J" Chris Jericho. Both men's egos were out of control as Angle and Orton claimed their respective leadership for this team. An argument ensued from there, both men warning the other not to screw them over. I can't fathom how these two will be able to coexist tonight.

Match #5
Abyss/The Hurricane vs. The Basham Brothers (w/ Shaniqua & Lamont)
The Basham Brothers had a lot of pressure on them in this one. John Bradshaw Layfield is not at all happy with their performance as of late, especially losing to their opponents for tonight, Abyss and The Hurricane, at Proving Ground. Doug and Danny were using this added pressure to their advantage though as they turned it up a notch for this one. Much like they did at Proving Ground, their goal was to keep The Hurricane in the ring whenever possible. The Man In Green did a good job of sensing when he was in trouble and getting Abyss in there. Shaniqua got the Bashams to change their strategy a bit and after distracting Abyss, Doug and Danny focused on Abyss' legs instead, the theory being if he can't walk, he can't hurt them. This worked for awhile, but the Bashams became a bit skewed when they kept trying to make Abyss submit. We haven't seen Abyss enough to truly know if he has that quit in him, but from what we've seen so far, it doesn't seem likely. Abyss powered himself out of this as the Bashams were trying to double team him, nailing them with a double choke slam before tagging in The Hurricane. The superhero flew in with a flying crossbody on both Bashams as the crowd popped. Jumping clotheslines were dished out liberally as the Man In Green was building momentum. A distraction by Shaniqua put the Bashams back in control until Abyss came in and floored Danny Basham with a big boot. The Hurricane then nailed Doug Basham with the Eye of the Hurricane and once again, Abyss and The Hurricane were victorious.

Abyss and The Hurricane defeated The Basham Brothers (Danny Basham and Doug Basham) when Hurricane pinned Doug Basham with the Eye Of The Hurricane in 0:09:27.
Rating: ** 1/2

For the second straight time, Abyss and The Hurricane defeated the former World Tag Team champions. This has to be eating JBL alive. With victories like this, Abyss and The Hurricane have to be considered top threats for the World Tag Team Titles, despite being such a new team.

THE WORLD'S GREATEST TAG TEAM ARE NOT SHORT ON EGO
Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin, the World Tag Team champions, asked for a little time to speak, but it quickly became apparent that they were merely out here to stroke their own egos. The WGTT made the claim that they were the greatest tag team of all-time and will be the measuring stick against which future teams will be judged. Benjamin added, "We're so good, not even we could beat us!" The WGTT then got into a slight argument about which one of them would win Deadly Draw. Though it's no guarantee, with their athletic abilities, both Haas and Benjamin have an excellent shot at winning Deadly Draw.

Match #6
Cruiserweight Title Match
Paul London (c) vs. Jeff Hardy (w/ Daffney)
We had what looked to be on paper a fantastic Cruiserweight Title match as current champion Paul London was set to defend against Jeff Hardy of the Prophecy. However, Matt Hardy's personal grudge against his brother cut this one short before it could really get going. After a fast-paced opening minute or so, Matt Hardy sprinted down toward the ring. Despite Daffney's shriek of warning, Jeff didn't catch sight of Matt until he was already being tackled to the canvas. As Matt Hardy wailed away with right hands on his brother, a disqualification was called for.

Jeff Hardy defeated Paul London by disqualification in 0:01:59.
Rating: ** 3/4
(Paul London retained the GCW Cruiserweight Title.)

The fight was definitely on as Matt and Jeff brawled their way up the ramp. Paul London watched on as the GCW Official Brigade tried to stop the family feud on the floor. While London was distracted by that, he was blindsided by FRANKIE KAZARIAN who planted London's face into the mat with the Wave of the Future. Kazarian grabbed the Cruiserweight Title and held it high above his head, a possible sign of things to come at Deadly Draw.

EDDIE GUERRERO AND CHRIS JERICHO TRY TO WORK OUT A STRATEGY
Much like Kurt Angle and Randy Orton before them, Eddie Guerrero and Chris Jericho met to try to work out a strategy for tonight's main event. Despite a lot of bad blood between these two from their well-documented past, Guerrero and Jericho look to be more willing to put their differences aside in order to get a piece of Angle and Orton. Based on what we've seen from all four men involved, the edge has to go to Latino Heat and Y2J at this point, seeing how they're at least open to working together.

Match #7
Rey Mysterio Jr. vs. Rhyno
Rhyno just won't seem to let this die. Rhyno lost fair and square to Rey Mysterio Jr. at Proving Ground, making Mysterio the top contender to CM Punk's Television Title. However, Rhyno isn't done with his vendetta against Mysterio, costing him a match last week against Kid Kash. Mysterio wanted this match in the worst way, hoping to be done with the Manbeast once and for all. It didn't quite work out that way. As you would expect from these two, this match was fought with the David vs. Goliath mentality. Mysterio can't stand up to Rhyno, of course, but he can definitely out run him. Mysterio did all he could to take Rhyno and keep his distance. When Rhyno got a hold of Mysterio though, the masked man from San Diego was in trouble. How Mysterio kicked out of some of the damage he took is beyond me, including a huge Samoan Drop that Rhyno hit while countering a crucifix. Mysterio turned the tides when after being whipped into the corner, Mysterio stopped his momentum, and jumped up, wrapping his legs around Rhyno's head and throwing him to the outside with a headscissors. After collecting himself, Mysterio went to the outside, only to be met with a steel chair upside the head from Rhyno!

Rey Mysterio Jr. defeated Rhyno by disqualification in 0:13:55.
Rating: ***

Rhyno stood over Mysterio's unconscious body with a sadistic look on his face. Rhyno didn't even care if he won this match. Mysterio is not content with how this went down and has askd Tommy Dreamer for one more match with Rhyno next week, but this time with falls-count-anywhere rules. Dreamer granted Mysterio his request, and we will see this match next week.

ERIC ANGLE HAS A CHALLENGE FOR THE ALPHA MALE
Eric Angle came out for an interview, and the crowd was all over him throughout the duration. Angle was as arrogant as ever, claiming that he proved to the world that he could beat the best by "kicking Benoit's ass" at Proving Ground. It should be noted that Eric Angle was still wearing a bandage on his head. Angle said that he wanted more though. Using a platform of kicking Benoit's ass (not true) and being undefeated (also not true), Angle said that he wants to make Deadly Draw a memorable night. "Not only will I win Deadly Draw and become the number-one-contender for the World Title, but I want some gold now. So Monty Brown, just like my brother kicked your ass last night, I'm going to kick your ass at Deadly Draw for the North American Title!" At this point, "The Alpha Male" himself came to the ring and got in Angle's face. "You want a piece of me, son? I don't think you're ready for life on the Serengeti! I should be the World Heavyweight champion right now, but that's fine, because I'm still the North American champion, and I don't plan on losing this title for a long, long time. So you want a piece of me? You got it, but you're going to feel the Pounce... PERIOD." It looks like we have ourselves another title match at Deadly Draw.

Match #8
MAIN EVENT
"Latino Heat" Eddie Guerrero/"Y2J" Chris Jericho vs. Kurt Angle (World Heavyweight champion)/Randy Orton
It was main event time, and right from the opening bell, it was apparent that Kurt Angle and Randy Orton were not going to be able to get along. It started with an argument over who would start the match and it snowballed from there. Meanwhile, on the other side of the ring, Guerrero and Jericho had a strategy in place, and they were pulling it off to perfection. They each looked weary of their partner, a little untrusting, but they didn't let that detour them from their ultimate goal of winning this match. However, despite their inability to function as a unit, Angle and Orton are terribly talented and that was enough to keep them in this match. Angle and Orton got the ball rolling their way, but their distrust of one another ultimately led to their demise. Near the end of the match, Jericho was out on the outside and Angle and Orton were having their way with Guerrero. Orton held Guerrero open for Angle, who hit the ropes and went to punch Latino Heat, but Eddie moved and the World champion nailed Orton instead! Angle and Orton argued, allowing Jericho to sneak back in the ring and hit Angle with a knee to the back. This caused Angle to smash into Orton, knocking the latter to the outside. Y2J grabbed Angle and brought him down with a running bulldog, followed up by the Lionsault. Guerrero had climbed to the top by this point and jumped off with the Frog Splash.

Eddie Guerrero and Chris Jericho defeated Kurt Angle and Randy Orton when E. Guerrero pinned K. Angle with the Frog Splash in 0:19:14.
Rating: **** 1/4

This is not a good sign for Kurt Angle as he goes into Deadly Draw to defend his World Heavyweight Title against the man who pinned him tonight, Eddie Guerrero. After the match, Guerrero and Jericho weren't exactly ready to go spend the night partying and celebrating their victory, but they did exchange a hesitant handshake which drew a nice pop from the crowd. Angle and Orton, however, went back to arguing, blaming the other for the loss. Angle's night got much worse when Orton finally had enough and dropped him with the R.K.O. to end our broadcast.

And now for this week's report on Deadly Draw, which will come to you from the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas on April 17th. The first thing to report is that due to his arrest, Steve Bradley has been removed from the Deadly Draw match. Since there is no way of telling when he'll be out of prison, Commissioner Tommy Dreamer felt it would be best that Bradley be removed from the match altogether. That being said, we do have more of the card for this big pay-per-view event to announce.

Incidently, this happened on my and Holly's 4 year anniversery... not that anyone here cares about that ;D

lol, I love Jericho getting the names wrong.  I'm just waiting for Jericho to ask Randy where Robert Gibson is. ;)

Good to see there are two less people for Ki for worry about, though Daffney can't be ignored by any means.  I knew Punk would retain, but Ki came off looking good too.  I'm wondering if maybe once they are able to challenge for the tag titles again if maybe he or Skipper (or both) will decide not to get back into the tag scene.

Not exactly a hard victory for Conway and Morgan here, but every little bit helps.  I like their finisher.  Tis bitchin'

*holds up sign that reads "More Lamont"* :D

Good to see Kid Kash in the Deadly Draw.  I don't think he'll come but with the win, but I think he'll help make a name for himself in GCW at some point during the Deadly Draw match.

The main event tonight is going to be very, very interesting :)

Good re-match, Abyss & Hurry are really heating up.  I smell sitcom! :)

I'm not a fan of Jeff, but this new feud with Matt I like.  London is going to have to watch his back more until the PPV, less his face gets planted again.  He's going to want to be as close to 100% as humanly possible.  Too many Wave of the Futures (or would it be Waves of the Future?) and he's going to be at a disadvantage.

If Rey has another night like tonight next week, his chances won't be good for the PPV either.  Rhyno has the distinct advantage of having bowel movements larger than Mysterio.  The FCA match will be brutal.

Great main event.  Good ending.  That RKO isn't going to be forgotten by Angle though.  He already didn't like Randy Orton, now he must be on his radar.

Maybe Orton hasn't entirely turned after all. I guess he and Eddie currently fit the mold of "shades of grey". Eddie getting the win was the obvious move. I'd have been even happier if Jericho and Eddie had clashed at the end, but no matter, makes for two interesting matches at Deadly Draw, even if Angles win is pretty much assured.

Speaking of Deadly Draw, 15 guys now. I'm still not sure of a winner, but as long as you write some really good shit, I'm happy. A Rumble match is quite difficult to screw up without trying (only Vince Russo ever made it) so I'm expecting.

Oooh, Eric Angle. For the first time in ages, I can actually envisage the North American title switching hands. Eric's the perfect choice as it stands. And that'll give Monty a big storyline in the process.

Rey and Rhyno again. Rey'll be hoping to get through in one piece before his title shot but with him 2-0 against Rhyno, I can see the big man taking that one.

I'm still calling Frankie to win the gold. Mind you, the way my predictions are going, heels are going to hold all the gold at this rate. I suppose that sets up a lot of happy endings at Supercade (and a few disappointing ones too). Jeff and Matt meanwhile are bound to clash at Deadly Draw.

As are JBL and Abyss for that. The Bashams aren't doing much of a job right now, are they? If you want a job doing, do it yourself...

CM Punk'll retain his title too. He risks coming across as someone who can't get it done by himself otherwise. The way he flattened Low Ki today backs that notion up.
UnrightPosted on 01/14/06 at 15:17:31

Hmm.. Too bad for BJ Whitmer that the cops waited so long to arrest Steve Bradley..

Is Orton going to have to bring in the real Ricky Morton for clarification purposes?
