[GCW] Monday Night Explosion - 3/14/05

Snabbit888Posted on 12/29/05 at 09:31:35

In six days, Global Championship Wrestling will proudly present Proving Ground on pay-per-view! But we don't want to put the horse in front of the cart as we had one more stop before then - St. Louis, Missouri and the Savvis Center for Monday Night Explosion! In six days, for the first time ever we will see the World Heavyweight champion and the North American champion go one-on-one, but tonight we would see FOUR champions involved in one match as World champ Kurt Angle would team with the World's Greatest Tag Team, the current World Tag Team champions, to take on North American champ Monty Brown, Elix Skipper, and Low-Ki! Also tonight, we would see Matt Hardy taking on Sean O'Haire, "The Crippler" Chris Benoit meeting Steve Bradley, and the Explosion debut of Kid Kash! All that and plenty more on Explosion!

The show started out with "Latino Heat" Eddie Guerrero essentially holding the show hostage, sitting in a steel chair in the middle of the ring, microphone in hand. He said that Randy Orton was the man who attacked him a week ago and deprived him of his opportunity to be number-one contender, and that he wasn't leaving the ring until Orton came out and "got his ass kicked." The GCW Official Brigade came out instead to usher Guerrero from the ring, but when the first two were met with hard right hands, the rest decided against it. Finally Orton came out and vehemently denied having anything to do with the attack, being sure to tell Latino Heat he was nuts in the process. At this point, CHRIS JERICHO joined the two, and surprisingly took Guerrero's side. "This is exactly the type of thing the NEW Ricky Morton would do!" As Orton and Jericho were jawing back and forth, Guerrero had heard enough and blasted BOTH men with a hard steel chair shot! The GCW Official Brigade tried to stop him from doing further damage, but he took wild swings at them as well (luckily not connecting on any). Security was finally able to subdue Guerrero and escorted him from the building. Eddie is going to be happy to hear though that Commissioner Tommy Dreamer saw what happened and added Eddie Guerrero to the match at Proving Ground, making it a Triple Threat match with Randy Orton and Chris Jericho!

Match #1
Non-Title Match
Paul London (Cruiserweight champion) vs. Rhyno
Our opening contest featured the Cruiserweight champion Paul London in an obvious non-title contest as he took on the proud owner of a new bad attitude, "The Manbeast" Rhyno. For much of this man, London was like a fat man at a buffet - he just kept coming back for more. Rhyno is a pure wrecking machine and was just looking for his shot to hit the Gore, but London was able to avoid it time after time. But after dishing out a lot of punishment, the Gore seemed to be inevitable, except that REY MYSTERIO JR. was now down at ringside! When Rhyno charged in for the Gore, Mysterio pulled London out of the way causing Rhyno to smack the middle turnbuckle hard with his chest. A DDT followed, and then the London Calling gave London the win!

Paul London pinned Rhyno with the London Calling in 0:09:17.
Rating: ***

Though London showed a lot of heart to stay in this match, a definite assist has to be given to Rey Mysterio, who was returning the favor to Rhyno who has cost him matches over the past few weeks. Their match at Proving Ground started out as being two friends wrestling for a Television Title shot, but it has turned into a lot more than that.

Match #2
Matt Morgan/Rob Conway vs. The Basham Brothers (w/ Shaniqua & Lamont)
The Basham Brothers fell short in their attempt to regain the World Tag Team Titles last week, and they were in a foul mood about it, looking to take out some frustrations on Matt Morgan and Rob Conway. Morgan and Conway are proving that they're not going to be pushovers by any means though. When two wrestlers are struggling individually, sometimes a pairing can rejuvenate them, and that is exactly what is happening here. This match was an even one with neither team fully asserting themselves, and this match was still very much up in the air when ABYSS ran in and began pounding on Doug and Danny Basham!

The Basham Brothers (Danny Basham and Doug Basham) defeated Matt Morgan and Rob Conway when Doug Basham defeated Conway by disqualification in 0:03:25.
Rating: ** 1/2

Matt Morgan and Rob Conway were frustrating that this match didn't get to go to its conclusion, but seeing how intense Abyss was, they weren't about to voice their displeasure at this point. Abyss was wildly after the Bashams, who made a quick retreat up the ramp, where they were met by John Bradshaw Layfield. JBL regrouped the troops before they all headed back to the ring and overwhelmed Abyss. Abyss tried to fight back, but the 3-on-1 odds were too much for him until THE HURRICANE rushed out, chair in hand! The Cabinet caught sight of the green flash coming to the ring and got out of Dodge as the superhero held them at bay. After what happened, JBL went to Commissioner Dreamer and demanded that the Bashams get a handicap match against The Hurricane for his "meddling." Dreamer thought about it (for about half a second) before rejecting JBL's request, instead opting for a straight up tag team match with the Bashams taking on The Hurricane and Abyss.

Match #3
"The Crippler" Chris Benoit vs. Steve Bradley
As is customary with the way Team Angle goes about their business, with Eric Angle having a big match with Chris Benoit at Proving Ground with I Quit rules, Steve Bradley was sent out this week to put a hurting on Benoit. Bradley is most dangerous in these positions because without worrying about winning, he is able to focus on what he does best, and that's maim opponents. The Canadian Crippler was well aware of what was going on and made the effort to beat Bradley to the punch, even wrestling more aggressively than usual. Despite the Rabid Wolverine's attempts to put Bradley away quickly and efficiently, he took his lumps. Bradley knows how to hurt a man, and he made Benoit hurt tonight, making excellent use out of the ringpost and steps on the outside, as well as bending the rules as far as possible to cause Benoit great discomfort. Bradley made special note to target Benoit's shoulder, an important element to making the Crippler Crossface less effective. Benoit's took a lot of damage to the shoulder, but he improvised and got on a vicious figure-four leglock that got him the win.

Chris Benoit made Steve Bradley submit to a figure-four leglock in 0:12:20.
Rating: *** 1/2

Benoit escaped with the win and able to walk out on his own, but he was in a lot of pain when the referee raised his left arm in victory. As Benoit grimaced, Eric Angle had to be optimistic about his chances this Sunday.

Match #4
The Hurricane vs. Kid Kash
Kid Kash made his GCW debut last night on High Voltage and was making his first appearance on Explosion against The Hurricane. The Hurricane looked energized after helping out Abyss earlier, looking sharp against Kash. But the superhero had to expect what came next as Shaniqua came down to the ring and tried to get involved, but she was cut off on the apron by referee Jimmy Appleseed. While Appleseed was tied up with Shaniqua, JOHN BRADSHAW LAYFIELD sneaked in and turned The Hurricane inside out with the Stock Market Crash! Kash simply smiled as JBL left the ring and calmly hit the Money Maker to pick up an academic 1-2-3.

Kid Kash pinned The Hurricane with the Money Maker in 0:08:35.
Rating: ***

You have to admire The Hurricane's sense of morality in wanting to help Abyss, but in the same breath he has put himself right in the line of fire with the Cabinet. JBL is definitely one to hold a grudge.

We cut to the office of Tommy Dreamer where we saw "The Phenomenal" AJ Styles, and he was an unhappy man. Styles voiced his disapproval over Justin Credible getting the Cruiserweight Title shot at Proving Ground when he feels he is far more qualified. Dreamer told Styles that he will get his chance again soon enough, but for now, it is Credible's time. Styles was still unsatisfied, so Dreamer gave him a chance to work out some of the anger by signing him in a match against Credible tonight.

Match #5
Matt Hardy (w/ Lita) vs. Sean O'Haire (w/ CM Punk & Daffney)
Matt Hardy gets a shot at the Television Title come Proving Ground, but tonight he took on CM Punk's henchman Sean O'Haire. Punk and Daffney were hovering around ringside, but they never got involved. They never got the chance really. O'Haire came out quickly and overpowered Hardy, showing some impressive strength by tossing Hardy about, but Hardy showed some craftiness by catching the big man in a quick roll up and just holding him down long enough for the three count.

Matt Hardy pinned Sean O'Haire after a roll up in 0:03:31.
Rating: ***

Hardy had no time to rest on his laurels though as Punk kicked him hard in the head before he could even get back up to his feet. Punk blasted Hardy with repeated right hands before O'Haire scooped the overwhelmed Hardy up and dropped him with a reverse Death Valley Driver. Punk got the microphone and got right in hardy's face as O'Haire held him up, telling him that he has made the biggest mistake of his life, and that at Proving Ground, "things are going to get much, much worse." The Prophecy left Hardy laid out, a thin stream of blood coming out of his forehead.

Match #6
"The Phenomenal" AJ Styles vs. Justin Credible
Many people feel that the now of weight Justin Credible is undeserving of a Cruiserweight Title shot, most notably his opponent tonight, AJ Styles. Styles was looking to prove a point against Credible, feeling snubbed about being overlooked. If Styles beating the ever-living crap out of him wasn't enough, Credible's night got worse when a stagehand came to the ring with a chicken suit on a stand and left it for Credible to look at. Things looked bleak for Credible until FRANKIE KAZARIAN continued his torment of Styles by making himself very noticeable. Styles was in no mood for Kazarian and jawed with him, to which Kazarian responded by grabbing his arm. During the struggle, Credible nailed Styles from behind with a forearm, scooped him up and hit the That's Incredible and got a very tainted win.

Justin Credible pinned AJ Styles with the That's Incredible in 0:03:01.
Rating: *** 1/4

Kazarian backed up the ramp, smiling and taunting Styles the entire way. Styles pulled himself back up, wounded but definitely filled with rage. This match at Proving Ground is one I am definitely looking forward to.

We had a very strange segment next as we cut to a local bowling alley where we saw the trio of Booker T, Goldust, and Sharmell enjoying a night out. It was very... interesting to say the least seeing Goldust bowling in a golden body suit, but such is Goldust. Booker T has warmed up considerably to this teaming, but he freaked out when Goldust implied that this was a date. They have a ways to go, but it's nice to see them coexisting.

Match #7
MAIN EVENT
"The Alpha Male" Monty Brown (North American champion)/"Primetime" Elix Skipper/Low-Ki vs. Kurt Angle (World Heavyweight champion)/The World's Greatest Tag Team (World Tag Team champions)
Though Monty Brown has been very impressive as the North American champion, our main event tonight would be a good indication of how well he would be able to carry himself in the World Heavyweight Title scene. Along with his partners Elix Skipper and Low-Ki, the trio took it right to the championship members of Team Angle in this six man tag team match. Angle had a good game plan in this one - keep Brown on the mat at all costs. When he did that, he had the clear edge. The problem with Angle in GCW though is that he is far too cocky, and he let the Alpha Male con him into the power game. Once that happened, Brown took control, having his way with the more technically sound Team Angle. Skipper and Low-Ki added the speed and for the most part, Team Angle was being outclassed.

The tide of this great match changed late when all six men spilled into the ring. During the chaos, Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin paired off with Skipper and Low-Ki respectively and brawled around ringside and into the crowd, leaving only Angle and Brown. Referee Jimmy Appleseed was trying to get the four on the outside to get back in their corners, and thus didn't see Angle blast Brown with the World Heavyweight Title when he went for the Pounce. Appleseed turned around conveniently to see Angle slapping the Ankle Lock on, and seeing the Alpha Male not responding, rewarded the match to the World Heavyweight champion.

Team Angle (Charlie Haas, Kurt Angle and Shelton Benjamin) defeated Elix Skipper, Low-Ki and Monty Brown when K. Angle defeated M. Brown when M. Brown passed out in the Ankle Lock in 0:22:42.
Rating: ****

As the show came to an end, Angle grabbed the World Title, got right in Brown's unconscious face and yelled, "THIS IS AS CLOSE AS YOU WILL EVER GET!" Angle struck first blood, but he is going to have an angry cat from the Serengeti on his back now.

FINAL CARD FOR PROVING GROUND - KEMPER ARENA - KANSAS CITY, MO - MARCH 20, 2005
Champion vs. Champion - World Heavyweight Title Match - Kurt Angle (c) vs. "The Alpha Male" Monty Brown (Brown's North American Title is NOT on the line)

I thought for sure Monty would have pinned one of TWGTT there, but what do I know? Truth be told, I can't see Angle losing this one here.

World Tag Team Title 2 out of 3 Falls Match - The World's Greatest Tag Team (c) vs. "Primetime" Elix Skipper/Low-Ki

Nor can I see TWGTT losing here. Sure, they'll drop a fall, and maybe you'll find some way to make it controversial, but Benjy and the Haasmaster retain.

"Y2J" Chris Jericho vs. Randy Orton vs. "Latino Heat" Eddie Guerrero

Still no one-on-one Jericho/Orton match? Looking at that, perhaps Jericho is the one who decked Eddie. Or perhaps he's just getting irrational again. Let's give him the win here, unless it turns out to be a big conspiracy from Orton and Jericho.

I Quit Match - "The Crippler" Chris Benoit vs. Eric Angle

I guess the match with Bradley will have served an extra purpose, with Benoit now hurt, allowing him to lose to Eric without looking sucky or anything. Angle wins.

Television Title Match - CM Punk (c) vs. Matt Hardy

Punk wins, perhaps with additional help. Hardy beat O'Haire, I figured that much, but it won't carry on here.

Number-One-Contenders Match for the Television Title - Rey Mysterio Jr. vs. Rhyno

Now that I think about it, Rey has had several shots at the TV title, but not had a proper programme with Punk. Rey wins.

Cruiserweight Title Match - Paul London (c) vs. Justin Credible

After all that, I would have thought the payoff was Credible taking the title here. New champion crowned.

"The Phenomenal" AJ Styles vs. Frankie "The Future" Kazarian

Kazarian is on something of a winning streak right now (1). If I remember right, AJ got the win last time, so figures Frankie gets it here.

Abyss/The Hurricane vs. The Basham Brothers

I was torn here - Abyss is the newly turned good guy, but there's the obvious factor of him being a bit lost out there. Then I realised I've got heels winning almost every match here, so I'll plump for Abyss and Hurricane.

Other notes - still no love for Conway, but at least he won one on Voltage, and I'm guessing the team will take off some more once they get a name.

Also, with Kid Kash, I've certainly noticed he's there at least. I'll sit patiently now while I wait for him to get a push or storyline of sorts...
americamamushiPosted on 12/31/05 at 03:52:01

OoOoOo, more K.I.D.  I'm excited already.  Funny, I haven't been big on Kid Kash untill recently.

PG just keeps getting better yo.

Rey gets some revenge, nice.  Their match at PG≠pretty.

Abyss just didn't get his freedom from the Shaniqua and then, he's gone bat shit insane apparently. ;)  If Abyss comes to the ring with a cape for his tag match with Hurricane I'll piss myself.

(On a completely unrelated note, I just almost sprayed air freshener into my eyes)

Steve Bradley is not someone to wanna see across the ring from you right before a big PPV match.  Benoit sure didn't come out smelling like roses, but even though I expected a win from him here, I knew he couldn't come out in perfect health with an opponent like Bradley.  He may not be 100% come Sunday, but Benoit also showed that even then, he's got more tools in the ol' tool box than just the Crossface.  Angle will still have to be carefull

I don't see why AJ cares if Credible gets a shot.  He'll be in a chicken suit.  That's good for business ;)

Good cruiserweight action.  It's an area that really appeals to me right now.

You are the king of Goldust material.

Good main event.  Brown ended up in a position I didn't expect him to be in.  Of course, the title belt had a lot to do with that, but still.

Predictions

Champion vs. Champion - World Heavyweight Title Match - Kurt Angle (c) vs. "The Alpha Male" Monty Brown (Brown's North American Title is NOT on the line)

Angle will win by hook or crook... most likely the latter.

World Tag Team Title 2 out of 3 Falls Match - The World's Greatest Tag Team (c) vs. "Primetime" Elix Skipper/Low-Ki

WGTT retains.  I'll be surprised if it doesn't go to the 3rd fall.

"Y2J" Chris Jericho vs. Randy Orton vs. "Latino Heat" Eddie Guerrero

Hmmm... I wanna say Eddie, but my gut says Orton so I'll go with my gut.

I Quit Match - "The Crippler" Chris Benoit vs. Eric Angle

Tough call.  I'll say Angle

Television Title Match - CM Punk (c) vs. Matt Hardy

Punk, with much interference

Number-One-Contenders Match for the Television Title - Rey Mysterio Jr. vs. Rhyno

Rhyno

Cruiserweight Title Match - Paul London (c) vs. Justin Credible

London.  Chicken suits are hard to wrestle in. ;)

"The Phenomenal" AJ Styles vs. Frankie "The Future" Kazarian

Styles

Abyss/The Hurricane vs. The Basham Brothers

I'm gonna say the Bashams thanks to Shaniqua & JBL
