[GCW] Monday Night Explosion - 3/7/05

Snabbit888Posted on 12/27/05 at 22:15:19

Welcome to the Hilton Coliseum in Ames, Iowa, the home of the Iowa State Cyclones for Monday Night Explosion! A big night of action today as we'd see who the number-one-contender would be for the World Heavyweight Title when Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerrero, and Monty Brown locked up in a Triple Threat match! Also on the card tonight, "Y2J" Chris Jericho goes one-on-one with Eric Angle! Also, the World's Greatest Tag Team defend the World Tag Team Titles against the Basham Brothers! All that and more on Explosion!

Match #1
Randy Orton vs. Steve Bradley
Though Randy Orton is finding himself becoming less popular, that hasn't taken away from his dislike of Team Angle as shown by our opening contest where he took on Kurt Angle's lead henchman, Steve Bradley. Bradley becomes a little scarier every week, because it's obvious that his intentions in the ring aren't to necessarily win but to cause his opponent as much pain as humanly possible (this just happens to lead to wins more often than not). Bradley showed this meanstreak again by attacking Orton before the bell, and promptly removing the protective covering from one of the turnbuckles, leaving nothing but exposed steel. Later in the match, Bradley would attempt to whip Orton to the buckle, but the third generation star reversed it, and caught Bradley with the R.K.O. when he stumbled out.

Randy Orton pinned Steve Bradley with the R.K.O. in 0:02:19.
Rating: ***

After the match, CHRIS JERICHO came out to confront Orton about what happened last week. Orton was adamant on his claims that he was merely there to cheer Jericho on and not distract him, but Jericho wasn't buying it, telling Orton that he's lucky that he doesn't get a beating right now. Commissioner Tommy Dreamer came out and told Jericho to save it, because he and Randy Orton would be going one-on-one at Proving Ground. Jericho was more than happy with this decision, while Orton seemed a little less thrilled.

Match #2
Booker T (w/ Sharmell) vs. Sean O'Haire (w/ Daffney)
Booker T was in singles action this week against Sean O'Haire, as his partner Goldust has a Television Title shot against CM Punk later in the evening. For Goldust's sake, this hope this match isn't an omen of things to come. The match was evenly contested, until Daffney got herself involved by jumping on the apron. Sharmell is sassy in her own right and wasn't going to stand by and let that happen, so she grabbed Daffney and threw her to the floor. However, in this chaos, Booker got distracted and floored by a Mafia kick from the huge O'Haire. The Seanton Bomb followed, and this one was in the books.

Sean O'Haire pinned Booker T with the Seanton Bomb in 0:05:27.
Rating: *** 3/4

Sean O'Haire made a hasty retreat along with Daffney, who despite being in a little pain, was laughing and shrieking all the way to the back. Booker T got up frustrated with himself for his lapse in concentration.

Match #3
Rey Mysterio Jr. vs. Frankie "The Future" Kazarian
Rey Mysterio Jr. has a big match against Rhyno at Proving Ground to see who will wrestle CM Punk for the Television Title at Deadly Draw, but he couldn't afford a letdown tonight against Frankie "The Future" Kazarian. Kazarian as in a good spot tonight though as he had everything to gain and nothing to lose wrestling against perhaps the greatest Cruiserweight of all-time. Mysterio was getting the better of Kazarian early, but Kazarian's use of a well-placed thumb to Mysterio's eye got Kazarian the advantage. However, Mysterio is a veteran and found his way back into the match. Kazarian was desperately trying to stay in this match, even grabbing referee Antonio Santangelo to protect himself from Mysterio. With the referee tied up, RHYNO once again made his way to the ring and flattened Mysterio with the Gore! There was no doubt about this one - definitely intentional. Kazarian scurried over and made the cover and was more than happy to take the cheap win.

Frankie Kazarian pinned Rey Mysterio Jr. after a Gore from Rhyno in 0:03:15.
Rating: *** 1/4

Just as quickly as he had entered, Rhyno left, a sadistic smile etched across his face. This was premeditated, no doubt about it, but the question is why?

After that, we go back to the locker room where we see Justin Credible, Commissioner Tommy Dreamer, and Cruiserweight champion Paul London standing by with an official as it's time for Credible's weigh-in. Credible is busy doing various exercises while holding onto two five pound weights. Credible finally stepped on the scale and was shocked when it read 229 pounds. Credible was freaking out until the official asked him what was in his pocket. Credible then pulled out two tiny weights. Credible hopped back on the scale an weighed in at 225, just barely making the cut off. Justin Credible will get his shot at Paul London and the Cruiserweight Title. Credible was pumped, until Dreamer added one last condition. "You'll get your shot at the title, Justin, but you have to wrestle in the chicken suit!" Credible EXPLODED with anger, while London had a good laugh as Credible stormed out. The jovial mood of the room was disrupted though when referee JD Sanders ran in to tell Dreamer there had been a disturbance. Dreamer rushed out and followed Sanders to where we saw medical personnel and members of the GCW Official Brigade standing over the unconscious body of Eddie Guerrero, who had been attacked. Dreamer was demanding to know if anyone had seen anything, but no one had. At this point, we weren't sure if Guerrero was going to be able to wrestle tonight in the main event.

Match #4
Television Title Match
CM Punk (w/ Sean O'Haire & Daffney) vs. Goldust (w/ Booker T & Sharmell)
Booker T had been screwed out of a victory earlier against Sean O'Haire, so he was down here with Goldust to ensure that the same thing wouldn't happen in his match for the Television Title against CM Punk. It is amazing to see the change in Booker T and Goldust since they patched things up. Both men are wrestling with a passion and intensity we haven't seen from them in quite some time. Goldust looked crisp in this match, but so did Punk. He's not the Television champion for nothing, after all. Booker T and Sharmell were able to counteract Sean O'Haire and Daffney, but they couldn't prevent Punk from hitting a flying cross body press and getting a handful of tights to keep his title in tow.

CM Punk pinned Goldust after a flying cross body press in 0:07:59.
Rating: ****
(CM Punk retained the GCW Television Title.)

This wouldn't be the last we saw of the Prophecy though as they confronted Matt Hardy and Lita on their way to the ring for Matt's match against John Bradshaw Layfield. Punk told Hardy that time was up and he had to make his decision. Hardy told Punk he appreciated the offer, but he was going to decline as he wanted to go about his business alone. Hardy and Lita walked away tot he ring. After they had left, all CM Punk said was, "You just made the biggest mistake of your life."

Match #5
Matt Hardy (w/ Lita) vs. John Bradshaw Layfield (w/ The Cabinet)
Matt Hardy turned down CM Punk's offer to join the Prophecy, but it didn't seem to be weighing on his mind as he took on John Bradshaw Layfield. Despite JBL's having the entire Cabinet down at ringside with him, Hardy was on top of things, using his speed to stay one step ahead of JBL's brute strength. Hardy when for the Twist of Fate, but probably too early as JBL shoved him off into the ropes and when Hardy bounced back, sent him flying to the outside. The Basham Brothers converged on Hardy, but he was in it enough to fight them both off, but what he didn't see was SEAN O'HAIRE run up from behind and obliterate him with a steel chair! Referee Petey Pluck, however, did see it and called for the bell.

Matt Hardy defeated John Bradshaw Layfield by disqualification in 0:07:07.
Rating: ** 1/4

Just as quickly as he had arrived, O'Haire was gone, leaving JBL in shock that he had lost the match. Officials helped Matt Hardy to the back while JBL grabbed a mic and demanded that the Cabinet get in the ring. JBL was as livid as we've seen him, most of his anger directed at Abyss. JBL screamed at Abyss for not stopping Sean O'Haire when he had the chance, and thus causing JBL to lose by disqualification. JBL was furious to the point that he actually slapped Abyss, which was the straw that broke the camel's back. Abyss clocked JBL with a huge right hand, knocking him to the mat. The Bashams ran at Abyss, but he floored them with a double clothesline. Lamont started to sneak up behind Abyss, but when the big man turned around and spotted him, I'm fairly sure Lamont wet himself as he fled. Shaniqua got right in Abyss' face and berated him, slapping him as she has many many times in the past. This time though, Abyss wasn't going to stand for it as he grabbed Shaniqua around the throat and lifted her up, but JBL pulled her to safety before Abyss could cause any further damage. It looks as if the inevitable has finally happened. But is Abyss going to be able to survive on his own? Only time will tell.

Before we went to commercial break, it was announced that the injuries that Eddie Guerrero sustained from the attack earlier will keep him out of the main event. However, a replacement had been named, so joining Monty Brown and Chris Benoit tonight would be Randy Orton. Orton had already wrestled once tonight, so he'd be pulling double duty. This should still be a great main event, but something definitely smells fishy here.

After returning from the break, out came Eric Angle, and he was in a mood to be sure after being pinned for the first time a week ago at the hands of Chris Benoit. The excuse train had officially pulled in as Angle was coming up with every reason imaginable as to why he lost last week. "That didn't count! I'm still undefeated! It was a Fatal Fourway, so it doesn't count! Not to mention Benoit clearing had a hold of my tights. So yeah, doesn't count. I equal undefeated! Benoit could NEVER beat me one-on-one!" At this point, The Crippler himself came out. "I could never beat you one-on-one? I'm sick and tired of listening to you bitch and moan out here! At Proving Ground, why don't we settle this once and for all? You and me, one-on-one, I QUIT!" Angle said that he wouldn't accept Benoit's challenge, but we would find out later that Tommy Dreamer liked the idea so much that the match has been signed for Proving Ground. Benoit told Angle not to worry about Proving Ground just yet though as he had other problems. Out came "Y2J" Chris Jericho, and we had our match.

Match #6
On Commentary: "The Crippler" Chris Benoit
"Y2J" Chris Jericho vs. Eric Angle
Eric Angle was in a tough position as far as he was concerned. He was thrown off by Chris Benoit's presence in the announce booth and the fact that well, Chris Jericho is one of the upper echelon of wrestlers in the world today. Nothing seemed to be going Angle's way as he couldn't seem to string together a series of moves throughout this match. But as Angle has shown in the past, he is very resourceful and he proved that again by grabbing Jericho by the tights and dumping Y2J to the floor. Seeing an opportunity to save his skin, Eric Angle grabbed a steel chair with every intention to blast Jericho with it. Benoit rushed from the announce position and took the chair away from Angle before he could do any damage. Angle was preoccupied with Benoit and didn't see Jericho getting back up. Y2J rushed at Angle, but Angle caught eye of him at the last second and moved, ushering Jericho into Benoit. Angle then rammed Y2J's head into the ringpost, back into the ring, and hit the groggy former World Heavyweight champion with the Angle Slam.

Eric Angle pinned Chris Jericho with the Angle Slam in 0:08:01.
Rating: ***

Benoit was pissed, jumping into the ring with the chair causing Angle to get out of there in a hurry. Angle escaped by the skin of his teeth this time, but he won't be able to make such a hasty retreat at Proving Ground.

Match #7
World Tag Team Title Match
The World's Greatest Tag Team (c) vs. The Basham Brothers (w/ Shaniqua & Lamont)
The World's Greatest Tag Team and the Basham Brothers have quite the history in the young GCW, having battled and exchanged the World Tag Team Titles several times in 2004. Both teams have scored more than one win, and though both teams have been dominant in GCW, they haven't been able to fully assert themselves over the other. This match was no exception. Neither team is overly popular with the fans these days so there wasn't a loud of crowd noise for this one, but we were treated to a good match never the less. As expected, Shaniqua interfered at every chance she could, seeming to take a special delight in slapping Shelton Benjamin who she had conned last summer. However, Benjamin and the World's Greatest Tag Team were the ones smiling in the end as Benjamin hit the T-Bone Powerslam on Danny Basham to get anything but an easy victory.

The World's Greatest Tag Team (Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin) defeated the Basham Brothers when S. Benjamin pinned Danny Basham after the T-Bone Powerslam in 0:14:45.
Rating: *** 1/2
(The World's Greatest Tag Team retained the GCW World Tag Team Titles.)

After the match, the champions were confronted by "Primetime" Elix Skipper and Low-Ki, who said they wanted one more shot after the WGTT screwed them in the Fatal Fourway a week ago. Haas and Benjamin were reluctant at first, but finally agreed, but only on the condition that this will be their last title shot as long as they are champions. Skipper and Low-Ki agreed, but wanted the match to be 2 out of 3 falls so they wouldn't be screwed over by a fluke pull of the tights or feet on the ropes. Haas and Benjamin conferred and agreed, and the match is set for Proving Ground!

Before our main event, Mario Riviera caught up with World Heavyweight champion Kurt Angle and asked him his thoughts on tonight's main event and who he'd rather face at Proving Ground: Monty Brown, Chris Benoit, or Randy Orton. Angle said the man he should be facing is nobody as he believes he earned the right to take the month off when he beat both Chris Jericho AND Randy Orton at Beat Your Valentine. Angle never gave a preference, but he did make sure to inform us that whoever he wrestled, he would be wrestling the match under protest. Talk turned to who Angle believed attacked Eddie Guerrero to take him out of the main event. Angle responded with a question of his own. "Who took his place?" "Well, Randy Orton did." "There's your answer right there." That's pretty gutsy of Angle to be throwing accusations around like that.

Match #8
MAIN EVENT
Winner faces Kurt Angle at Proving Ground for the World Heavyweight Title
"The Alpha Male" Monty Brown (North American champion) vs. Randy Orton vs. "The Crippler" Chris Benoit
As this match began, we saw Kurt Angle in the back watching intently on a monitor, scouting all three of the men he could potentially be defending the World Title against at Proving Ground. This was an interesting contest in that all three competitors were in a unique position. For Monty Brown, the current North American champion, if he won this match it would make it the first time we had the World champion and the North American champion wrestling each other in singles competition. For Randy Orton, it would be an impressive feat as he had already wrestled one match tonight and all but lucked into this match, so he would certainly be taking the bull by the horns. And for Chris Benoit, if he won this match, he would have a very rough night at Proving Ground as not only would he be wrestling Eric Angle in an I Quit match, but later that night he'd wrestle Kurt Angle for the World Heavyweight Title! As a result, Kurt looked to definitely be favoring a Chris Benoit victory in this match.

The match itself was a little sloppy, however not uninteresting. The sloppiness seemed to be a result of desperation as all three of these men know that World Title shots are not always easy to come by. Orton focused most of his attacks on Benoit, feeling he was the weaker link in the contest (which goes to show the respect for Monty Brown rather than disrespect for Benoit). Benoit is as tenacious as they come though, and the Rabid Wolverine kept fighting back. Benoit also went right at Brown, including several double teams along with Orton to keep the big man out of it, but Brown's raw power is something else, and in the end, a huge Pounce on Orton secured the North American champion's place in the main event at Proving Ground.

Number-One-Contenders-Triangle Match:
Monty Brown defeated Chris Benoit and Randy Orton when M. Brown pinned Orton with the Pounce in 0:11:16.
Rating: **

The show came to an end with Brown indicating through the art of pantomime that the World Heavyweight Title would be coming his way. Based on Kurt Angle's reaction backstage, this was the last thing he wanted. Right before the camera went off, we saw a heavily bandaged EDDIE GUERRERO come to the ring, steel chair in hand! He came in and took a wild swing at Orton with the chair, but Orton ducked and got the hell out of there in a hurry. We have no way of knowing at this point, but Latino Heat definitely thinks Orton is the one who attacked him!

The card for Proving Ground is really shaping up to be a fantastic night, live from the Kemper Arena in Kansas City, Missouri on March 20th! This will be the culmination of the first year of Global Championship Wrestling, and what a way to do it!

Wow.. Abyss finally turned face.  I would have thought you were going to have that happen on a PPV..
americamamushiPosted on 12/29/05 at 02:32:49

Steve Bradley, jobber to the stars. :) He never really comes off looking bad though.  Must be magic.  Orton vs. Jericho at the PPV.  Tasty. ;)

Poor Booker.  I thought he might pick this one up.  Booker's loss has to be weighing on Goldy now.

BAH GAWD! RHYNO SCREWED REY!  The question is why indeed.

YES!  RETURN OF THE CHICKEN SUIT!  BEST. GIMMICK. EVAH!

Aww... no Gold for Goldy.  Didn't expect him to win, but still... awwww.  I likes me some CM Punk here in GCW.  I'm really looking forward to seeing what happens when Christopher Daniels comes back.

Matt Hardy is going to regret not joining Punk and the Prophecy sooner or later... well... I guess sooner... but probably still later too. :)  And Abyss finally strikes back!  What the hell did Lamont think he was going to do anyway?! :)

I have to wonder if any loss will shut Angle up.  I like Eric's gimmick.  I have a feeling even if Benoit beats Angle at the PPV, that he'll still call foul, even though it's one on one.  And of course if Angle wins, there definitely will be no shutting him up. ;)

I like Brown getting the win to face Angle.  It'll be a tough match either way you look at it.  Tough but real good I think.

PPV looks nice.  I know I would order it. :)
91Posted on 12/29/05 at 02:52:38

Monty Brown eh? I guess he's finally going to be doing something big to really get on the radar. I mean, he'll lose to Angle I would have thought, but all the same it's good he'll get his chance to shine.

While on the main, this isn't the first time Eddie has wildly accused someone of messing with him (Black Tiger angle anyone?) and he was wrong there. Common logic dictates the same here. And Orton/Jericho should be good, you've taken the WWE lead of turning Orton back heel quite quickly I see (assuming it'll become official).

Abyss FINALLY turns. That's him sorted for the PPV, it'll be interesting to see, after the JBL feud, where he goes from there. Actually I wouldn't be surprised if you had something really big planned for him.

As far as Matt Hardy and the Prophecy goes, I'm not quite sure of the motivation of Punk in inviting Matt Hardy into the gang in the first place, is this going to lead to Jeff Hardy doing an evil gimmick?

TWGTT will take care of Skipper and Low Ki I would have thought, and I'm a little worried after that, as there don't seem to be legions of tag teams left for them - The Bashams have been beaten again, Booker and Goldust have been beaten already. OK, you're pairing Morgan and Conway, Punk and O'Haire could be used too, and at least you've hinted at plans to hire more teams, so I shan't sound like I'm complaining.

I guess Rhyno got sick of Rey looking so disfavourably upon the accidental Gores. Poor Rey. Good that Kazarian won as he'd lost a few on the trot. Actually, is it just me or has Steve Bradley not won in ages?

Eric wins again, and clean at that. The fact he's making lame excuses at a loss is cool, but I suspect he's got Benoits number now.
91Posted on 12/29/05 at 02:55:48

Ooh, I also just realised - I think the PPV after Proving Ground is your Royal Rumble event, ja? The last one was cool, just reading over it, but with stuff like Angle going out after five minutes, you need to do as I do (and I usually never advise people to follow my lead, for the benefit of their sanity) and book everything from the order of entry to the eliminations in order to make it truly awesome.
Snabbit888Posted on 12/29/05 at 03:45:09

The problem with that though is truthfully, I've never tried to book a Rumble, so I don't know all the little tricks in doing so effectively (and more importantly, without making the damned thing crash).  If you get some time, could you maybe PM me on tips to do it?  I'll probably have to do a practice one or so before hand.

Then again, I kinda like letting it just go because it can sometimes bring out other feuds and such I wouldn't have thought of originally.
91Posted on 12/29/05 at 03:51:18

Honestly? I book the order of entry and the eventual winner, then edit all the results afterwards, it's pretty much entirely based on the "script" I've written, as opposed to a regular match where my description is based on what actually happened.
Snabbit888Posted on 12/29/05 at 04:06:31

Okay, that's a little more my speed. :)  I'll probably do some tweaking as I go and book the order of entry for sure, and just kinda see what happens.  I have my winner already sent (and I'm about 75% set on who is going to win the 2006 Deadly Draw, if that tells you how much of a dork I am :)).
91Posted on 12/29/05 at 04:29:03

Dork? Not at all, I've known for nearly a year TNM time what the main for Wrestlefest VIII would be AND several months worth of title matches following. I'm at least nine months ahead in my mind as to what's likely to happen with the world title at the very least.

Mind you, I'm not some fifteen months ahead like you. And this probably just makes us both dorks.
Snabbit888Posted on 12/29/05 at 04:51:22

I have all my main events planned (bar one that is pending in between) up until February 2006.  I have about four or five matches (at least) planned for every PPV up until then.  Just gotta actually do it all now.

And yes, we're dorkalicious.
