[GCW] Monday Night Explosion - 2/21/05

Snabbit888Posted on 11/22/05 at 00:16:03

Welcome to the Resch Center in Green Bay, Wisconsin for another edition of Monday Night Explosion! Beat Your Valentine is in the books and we have a brand-new World Heavyweight champion in Kurt Angle! Kurt Angle would be here tonight, and he was sure to have a lot to say. Also tonight, a rematch from last night as Monty Brown defends the North American Title against John Bradshaw Layfield! In addition, Rey Mysterio Jr. would take on Sean O'Haire, and Randy Orton would go one-on-one with "Latino Heat" Eddie Guerrero! All that and a lot more on the hottest show in wrestling, Monday Night Explosion!

* * * * *

The show kicked off with red, white, and blue balloons falling from the rafters over the sold out crowd as out came the World Heavyweight champion Kurt Angle, and he was all smiles. Angle grabbed the microphone. "What did I tell all of you? I said time and time again that when I got my rematch for the World Title, I'd be the champion. And guess what? I am the World Heavyweight champion for a second time! Woo!" After putting himself over some more, Angle went on to say that because he beat three of the best wrestlers in the world last night to win the title, he has earned himself a bit of time off. He said after a few "mental health" weeks, he would be back and ready to defend the title against the best that Global Championship Wrestling had to offer. Angle started to leave, but he stopped when Commissioner Tommy Dreamer appeared at the top of the ramp. "Sorry to break it to you, Kurt, but that's not how we do business here. Now what kind of World champion would you be if you didn't defend the title?" Dreamer went on to announce that next week on Explosion there will be three Fatal Fourways. The winners of this match will move on to a triple threat match the following week with the winner receiving a World Heavyweight Title shot at the next GCW pay-per-view, Proving Ground, live from the Kemper Arena in Kansas City, Missouri on March 20th. Angle was not happy, but he became even more unhappy when Dreamer uttered the phrase, "Wait, there's more." Dreamer informed Angle that Chris Jericho has invoked his rematch clause for TONIGHT and in our main event, Y2J will have his chance to regain the World Heavyweight Title! Angle protested, complaining that he had to wrestle for 50 minutes last night. Dreamer's response? "So did Jericho. Good luck!" What a main event we have in store!

Match #1
Rey Mysterio Jr. vs. Sean O'Haire (w/ CM Punk & Daffney)
What a way to kick off the show as we had Rey Mysterio Jr. taking on Sean O'Haire. Mysterio had a lot of fire in him after what went down last night, and he has tangled with O'Haire enough to not be phased by his size and strength advantage. But whether you're phased by it or not, O'Haire DOES have a size and strength advantage over most competitors in GCW and he's not afraid to use it. Mysterio took his lumps, but he dished them right back as well. As has been a theme in matches in the Prophecy's past, interference played a huge role in this, not only in terms of Daffney's distractions and cheap shots, but Television champion CM Punk's attempt near the end of the match to get involved. Punk jumped on the apron only to be cut off by referee Jimmy Appleseed. Punk's distraction almost turned out to be costly as this allowed RHYNO to come out through the crowd and get in position to nail O'Haire with the Gore. But just like last night, Rhyno missed and almost tore Rey Mysterio Jr. in half. Rhyno got out of the ring quite frustrated with himself, but becoming even more so after O'Haire hit the Seanton Bomb for the win.

Sean O'Haire pinned Rey Mysterio Jr. with the Seanton Bomb in 0:11:59.
Rating: *** 1/4

* * * * *

After the Prophecy had cleared out, Rey Mysterio Jr. confronted Rhyno about being hit with the Gore for the second night in a row. Rhyno had nothing in terms for an explanation. When Mysterio demanded an apology, Rhyno refused and started to leave the ring. Mysterio grabbed his arm and spun him back, but as he did, Rhyno floored him with a clothesline! Mysterio was out of it as a frustrated Manbeast went to the back, leaving Mysterio laid out on the mat. What in the world was that about? Either way, when Mysterio came to, he was NOT a happy masked man.

* * * * *

We then cut backstage where we had a verbal altercation between "Y2J" Chris Jericho and Randy Orton. Orton was yelling at Jericho, saying he shouldn't be getting the shot at the World Heavyweight Title tonight because it is rightfully his shot, noting that he hasn't got a one-on-one shot since he won Best of the Best. Jericho warned Orton, saying that he better not get involved or he was going to have a lot worse problems than not getting a title shot. It looked like things were going to escalate into a fist fight from there, but Orton backed down with a sly smile across his face before giving a sarcastic "good luck." Y2J did not look thrilled with the thought of Orton interfering in the main event. We found out later that Commissioner Tommy Dreamer after hearing about this altercation informed Randy Orton that if he got involved in the main event, he would be disqualified from wrestling for the World Heavyweight Title for one full year.

Match #2
Goldust/Booker T (w/ Sharmell) vs. Team Canada (w/ Dawn Marie)
It seems as though Booker T finally came around last night, finally accepting that he's Goldust's partner and it's time to make the best of it. The new found teamwork came together in a big way last night as the strange duo defeated the Hardy Boyz. They were looking to extend their winning ways as they took on Dawn Marie's charges, Team Canada. Teddy Hart and Petey Williams were none too happy about Sharmell helping Goldust beat them in a handicap match a week ago, and they were looking for a measure of revenge. A catfight almost broke out on the floor even, but cooler heads prevailed. And despite Team Canada's best efforts, there was no beating Goldust and Booker T tonight. They've really seemed to hit a connection and worked exceptionally well tonight, and put this one in the bag when the Golden One hit Teddy Hart with the Shock Treatment for the three count.

Booker T and Goldust defeated Team Canada (Teddy Hart and Petey Williams) when Goldust pinned Teddy Hart with the Shock Treatment in 0:05:07.
Rating: *** 1/4

Sharmell has found a way to bring Goldust and Booker T together, and with her leadership, they have the talent to go as far as they want to in the tag division. This is going to be fun to watch.

* * * * *

The scene: the locker room of the Cabinet. John Bradshaw Layfield is talking with Shaniqua, belittling Abyss the whole time. JBL is essentially blaming Abyss for his failure at capturing the North American Title at Beat Your Valentine. After calling Abyss an idiot and a neanderthal, JBL told Shaniqua to deal with him, as she's the only person he'll listen to. Shaniqua told JBL not to worry, as Abyss would be wrestling The Hurricane tonight, and that should solve two problems at once. Abyss was highly upset about having to fight The Hurricane tonight, but Shaniqua signed it for him, and it would take place later in the evening. JBL was slightly appeased with this, but was still fuming, making his final point: "Just make sure he follows the plan tonight!" If I were Monty Brown, I'd be watching my back.

Match #3
Randy Orton vs. "Latino Heat" Eddie Guerrero
If we didn't have such a stacked lineup, this could be a main event match on any night. Regardless of the placement on the card, this was a very important match. With both of these individuals being very much in the World Title picture, a victory here could be what sways the Championship Committee in the future to grant a World Heavyweight Title shot. This was a very solid match from start to finish with both wrestlers doing what they do best. Orton is also accused of wrestling a "boring" style in the middle portions of his matches, and true, some of the holds he uses aren't flashy. But it's hard to argue their effectiveness, as he wore out the smaller Eddie throughout this match. The advantage that Eddie had though is that he is filled to the brim with Latino Heat. Guerrero has proved to be a little mentally unstable to begin with, but when he gets in a fight like this, he has the ability to kick it up a notch. This is exactly what he did in this one, hitting and running on Orton and using that experience edge to get in a position to win.

As we've seen many times in the past, if Eddie Guerrero can find a window of opportunity to cheat, he's going to do it. Referee Antonio Santangelo was taken out of the match after getting inadvertently bumped, and Eddie's lights lit up like a Christmas tree when he realized the opportunity in front of him. Eddie went to the outside of the ring and grabbed the chair of ring announcer William Buck. When Eddie got back in the ring though, instead of hitting Orton with it, he smacked it hard into the canvas. Latino Heat laid the chair on Orton, who was down from before when Eddie had hit him with a huge brain buster. Eddie finished his Oscar-worthy performance by laying out on the mat, making it appear as though it was Orton that hit him! Orton and Santangelo came to at the same time, and Santangelo did not look happy when he saw Orton with the chair. Santangelo questioned Orton about hitting Eddie with the chair, which the third generation superstar adamantly denied. Santangelo took the chair from Orton and turned his back to get it out of the ring, allowing Guerrero to sneak behind Orton and nail him with a low blow. Guerrero followed with the Three Amigos and went up top for the Frog Splash, but he took too long getting to the top as Orton rolled out of the way. Orton quickly followed with an R.K.O. out of nowhere and won a match that was a lot closer than he expected.

Randy Orton pinned Eddie Guerrero with the R.K.O. in 0:14:41.
Rating: *** 1/2

Randy Orton had won a highly competitive match, but even in a losing effort, Eddie Guerrero has nothing to be ashamed of. We do know that both of these men will be involved in the Fatal Fourways next week, so there's a chance we could see these two go at it again, which is something I'd love to see.

* * * * *

Eric Angle came out for an interview next, and just like Kurt before him, boy was he in an arrogant mood. Angle began talking by saying that he proved once and for all last night that Chris Benoit was a fluke, that he didn't have what it takes any more, and that his best days were behind him. Sure, he was a former World champion, but the key word there was FORMER. Angle continued to taunt Benoit, finally prompting the Crippler to make an appearance. Benoit's left arm was heavily taped as a result of the match last night, but he came out ready for a fight. Angle tried to back pedal his words when Benoit got in the ring, but the Rabid Wolverine wasn't listening as he fired Angle up with chops right away. Benoit got behind Angle and hit him with two consecutive German suplexes, but on the third attempt, Angle powered out and grabbed Benoit's left arm, bringing him down to the canvas and into a Fujiwara armbar. The GCW Official Brigade ran down and finally broke it up, but the damage had been done. We now know that both of these men are involved in the Fatal Fourways next week as well, but what kind of condition is Benoit going to be in?

Match #4
The Hurricane vs. Abyss (w/ Shaniqua & Lamont)
This was not a match that either Abyss or The Hurricane were looking forward to. Abyss because he seems deathly afraid of receiving boos from the fans, and The Hurricane because, well, there was a very good chance that Abyss was going to kick the ever-living crap out of him. The Hurricane kept his distance early, and that suited Abyss just fine. The Hurricane was trying to convince Abyss that he didn't have to do what Shaniqua wanted him to and it was okay to think for himself. However, once Shaniqua started yelling at Abyss, the behemoth finally got a hold of The Hurricane and went to work. The superhero didn't get much offense in, but Abyss was doing as little as possible as he didn't want the crowd to boo him. Eventually Shaniqua called Abyss over and gave him a huge slap in the face, prompting Abyss to go over and hit the Man in Green with a Torture Rack Bomb for the W.

Abyss pinned The Hurricane after the Torture Rack Bomb in 0:04:02.
Rating: ** 3/4

Abyss looked concerned over the health of The Hurricane, but Shaniqua quickly ushered him away. The Hurricane came to a little worse for wear, but ready to fight another day.

Match #5
Matt Morgan vs. Eric Angle
We had already seen Eric Angle once tonight unleash a vicious assault on Chris Benoit's already injured shoulder. He had a tall task ahead of him though as he took on the talented young blue chipper, Matt Morgan. Angle had to change his style slightly for this match. Normally, he will just try to take it to the mat. Morgan is simply too big and too powerful and can counter many of the amateur techniques with mere strength alone. It looked like Angle surprised Morgan when he started trying to match him in the power game. Morgan became a little cocky when he got the better of a few exchanges, which gave Angle the opening to bring Morgan to the mat. Angle picked Morgan apart before hitting an impressive Angle Slam on the 7-footer for the win.

Eric Angle pinned Matt Morgan with the Angle Slam in 0:08:35.
Rating: ** 3/4

The undefeated streak is still in tact. You have to believe that Eric Angle and Chris Benoit are on a collision course to meet again, and with the Rabid Wolverine as angry as he is, the result could very well be different the next time around.

Match #6
North American Title Match
"The Alpha Male" Monty Brown (c) vs. John Bradshaw Layfield (w/ The Cabinet)
John Bradshaw Layfield had a second crack at the North American Title tonight, his attempts falling short 24 hours ago at Beat Your Valentine. He was hoping to have better luck this time around, and he brought out all the troops to back him up. The Basham Brothers got involved early, ambushing Brown on the outside, but referee Petey Pluck saw it and ejected them from ringside! JBL was livid as his backup of five had just been cut down to three. The match wore on and much like last night, it was a hard-hitting affair. Everyone knows these are two of the hardest hitters in GCW, and they weren't holding anything back for this one. After a back and forth affair, much like last night, JBL called on Abyss to aid him in obtaining victory, but Abyss was hesitant. Abyss finally did get in the ring to try to help, but his hesitation led to him being on the receiving end of the Pounce from Monty Brown, knocking him to the floor. JBL tried to capitalize with the Stock Market Crash, but Brown ducked it and scooped him up for a big powerslam. The Pounce followed, and for the second night in a row, Brown successfully thwarted JBL's attempts to take the North American Title.

Monty Brown pinned John Bradshaw Layfield with the Pounce in 0:09:44.
Rating: ** 3/4
(Monty Brown retained the GCW North American Title.)

The Bashams quickly ran back to the ring, but the Alpha Male wisely got out of Dodge with his title in tow. After the match, Abyss was cornered by the other five members of the Cabinet as they all took turns berating him for his screwup (well, accept for Lamont, who is scared of everything). The crowd booed loudly as Abyss was humiliated. Finally, the Cabinet headed to the locker room.

Match #7
"Primetime" Elix Skipper/Low-Ki vs. "The Phenomenal" AJ Styles/Frankie "The Future" Kazarian
We had cruiserweight tag team action next as Elix Skipper and Low-Ki, who almost won the World Tag Team Titles last night from the World's Greatest Tag Team, taking on the makeshift team of AJ Styles and Frankie Kazarian. From the get go we were doubting the teamwork that Styles and Kazarian would be able to display. GCW officials put them together for this match, but it was quite obvious that they had no desire to be in the same ring with each other unless it was on opposite sides. When they got into a shouting match over who would start the match, we knew this one wasn't going to last very long. Near the end of this short contest, Styles finally had enough of Kazarian's jawing and hit him with a slap from the apron, causing Kazarian to step right into the Ki Krusher.

Elix Skipper and Low-Ki defeated AJ Styles and Frankie Kazarian when Low-Ki pinned Kazarian with the Ki Krusher in 0:04:44.
Rating: ***

Styles' and Kazarian's inability to function as a unit aside, Skipper and Low-Ki are quite the impressive duo. They could have walked away with the titles last night with one more break, and if I were Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin, I wouldn't want to face this tandem again.

* * * * *

Matt Hardy and Lita were seen backstage getting ready to leave the building when they are suddenly confronted by the Prophecy - Sean O'Haire, Daffney, and Television champion CM Punk. Punk was even creepier than he usually is, offering his condolences about being left without a partner after Jeff Hardy quit last night. Punk told him he feels his pain and knows all about being abandoned, making allusions to his father. Punk went on to tell Hardy that the Prophecy could help him and that he would never abandon him. Hardy didn't exactly know what to do with this, but Lita was noticeably nervous, which Punk seemed to revel in. Punk told him he didn't need to answer now, but to think on it before leaving with Sean O'Haire and Daffney without incident.

Match #8
MAIN EVENT
World Heavyweight Title Match
Kurt Angle (c) vs. "Y2J" Chris Jericho
Kurt Angle and Chris Jericho have traded the World Heavyweight Title in the past month, both changes being under strange circumstances. Jericho took the title in a steel cage match after receiving an unrequested assist from Brock Lesnar. Angle regained the championship 24 hours ago, but it was a contest that involved both Randy Orton and Eddie Guerrero. Tonight they would hook up one more time, one-on-one, one fall to the finish to settle this once and for all. This was a fantastic match, and what's more, it was completely free of any outside interference. This was just two of the world's best, two men on top of their games, going all out for the most desired prize in the game.

This match started out surprisingly quick. In a match of this magnitude, wrestlers with the experience of Angle or Jericho will often keep it slow, waiting for their opponent to make a mistake and capitalize, but they were firing on all cylinders from the get-go, looking to score an early fall as both men had to have been tired after the 50-minute marathon last night. The problem with that is that both of these guys are far too experienced to be defeated early in a match like this. Submission was the method of choice for both Angle and Jericho. Angle spent much of the match working over Y2J's left leg and ankle, while Jericho was hitting Angle with many slams and backbreaker variations, trying to weaken the champ's back for the Walls of Jericho. At one point midway through the match, Jericho had Angle down and went for the Walls, but the gold medal winner countered by grabbing Jericho's ankle and reversing into the Ankle Lock. Jericho managed to pull himself over to the ropes, but the damage had certainly been done. Y2J fought back, but with his injured appendage, much of his offense didn't have the oomph behind it that it generally does. Jericho's finally efforts fell short when he went for an ill-advised flying dropkick. Angle sidestepped and like a predator attacking its prey, latched on the Ankle Lock once more. To Jericho's credit, he wouldn't give up, but the pain was too intense, causing Y2J to pass out in the hold and allowing Angle to retain his title.

Kurt Angle defeated Chris Jericho when Chris Jericho passed out in the Ankle Lock in 0:15:11.
Rating: **** 1/4
(Kurt Angle retained the GCW World Heavyweight Title.)

What a way to end tonight's broadcast. Kurt Angle was pushed to the limits, but he proved that he had what it takes to beat Chris Jericho one-on-one.

Be sure to join us in one week's time as Monday Night Explosion comes to you from the Target Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota. We know that we will be seeing three Fatal Fourways as well as just signed, AJ Styles taking on Frankie Kazarian in a grudge match. See you next week everybody!
americamamushiPosted on 11/22/05 at 01:35:55

I like the set up for the next PPV.  That'll keep the butts in the seats.

Rhyno is quick becoming quite the asset for the Prophecy, even though he doesn't mean to be.

Yeah!  We have entered the golden age of Bookerdust!  I still have to question if it'll last though.

Nice Eddie moment.  Not too often that the younger guy gets the drop on the vet like that.

Next week's fatal 4-ways are already looking awesome.  Hopefully Benoit's arm will be 100% by that time.

Abyss is breaking away from oppression!  Little by little I can feel it.  :)

Angle keep building momentum.  Every notch he adds to that win streak belt adds at least a little steam to his engine, no matter who it is he beats.

Brown is an animal.  It's gonna be hard for anyone to take that belt off his waist.  He just seems like he's able to handle just about anything GCW can throw at him.

Color me interested.  I'm curious to see what Matt does about his offer from the Prophecy.

Good finish to the evening.  Angle had to get the win, but still anytime Jericho & Kurt Angle are in the same ring it's good TV.

Next week is looking good.  I'm excited for the fatal 4-ways and the Styles/Kazarian match.
rey619Posted on 11/22/05 at 10:12:13

Wohoo.. Rhyno goring Mysterio.. after seeing Brown pouncing Christian, I wonder how far Mysterio flew..

Abyss fears a lot of things nowadays.. barbed wire.. and now being booed.. here's to Abyss breaking loose from Shaniqua and JBL!

Angle's been champion two minutes and already he's trying to weasel out of future title defenses. And with an entrance like that, you know GCW will always be fine and dandy with him as champion. Meanwhilst, I'm thinking Orton or Eddie will win the race to get the PPV title shot.

Speaking of Orton, I'm ever awaiting his clash with Jericho. Jericho losing tonight was fairly inevitable to be honest and that's probably it for his chasing the title for the moment. He's got a date with Randy now...

Ahhhh, when is Abyss going to solidify the face turn? I keep waiting with baited breath but you keep teasing me like a cheap hooker. When it happens, it'll be worth the wait no doubt.

I'm not sure where Matt Hardy fits into the grand scheme of things with the Prophecy, I'm actually a little suspicious right now (perhaps with Matt turning them down and a certain someone else joining them in his place **coughJeffcough**). Unless you tell me that Jeff has definitely left - and if so, did he quit or did you release him?

Eric Angle continues to kick ass - actually I fancy him to make it to the final three, along with Orton and Eddie who had a stellar little encounter of their own. Benoit will be too hurt to really make an impact. Jericho might make it to the final, but he's had a number of matches with Kurt already so I can't see him winning a title shot. Is that a first loss for Morgan, or am I forgetting someone?

And Kazarian to win next week, he needs it right now.
