[GCW] Beat Your Valentine - 2/20/05

Snabbit888Posted on 11/14/05 at 09:33:57

Welcome to the Bradley Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin! Welcome to the hottest company in professional wrestling today, Global Championship Wrestling! And welcome to the February pay-per-view extravaganza, Beat Your Valentine! Joey O'Donnell and Brian Wagner welcome us to the show, and what a huge show it will be! In our main event, "Y2J" Chris Jericho puts his World Heavyweight Title on the line not only against the winner of December's Best of the Best tournament Randy Orton, but against former champion Kurt Angle and old nemesis Eddie Guerrero! That's not the only title up for grabs as Monty Brown will try to prevent John Bradshaw Layfield from taking the North American Title, and Paul London will need all his skill and a whole lot of luck to retain his Cruiserweight Title as he defends against Frankie Kazarian and AJ Styles! But to kick things off, the World Tag Team Titles are on the line as the World's Greatest Tag Team defend against Elix Skipper and Low-Ki!

Match #1
World Tag Team Title Match
The World's Greatest Tag Team (c) vs. "Primetime" Elix Skipper/Low-Ki
We kicked off the show with a big tag team grudge match pitting the World's Greatest Tag Team against the former champions, "Primetime" Elix Skipper and Low-Ki. Skipper could hardly hold himself back waiting for Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin to get to the ring, jumping out onto both members of the World Tag Team champions with a plancha. Not wanting to be left out, Low-Ki jumped out on Haas and Benjamin with a plancha of his own, and the challengers had the momentum swinging in their favor right from the get-go.

One of the standout skills of the World's Greatest Tag team is that they are exceptionally good at controlling the pace of a match, not letting things move any slower or any quicker than they want. Skipper and Low-Ki did an exceptional job of making the champions wrestle the style they wanted. Haas and Benjamin are extremely athletic, no question about it, but they can't fly like Elix Skipper nor have the martial arts background of Low-Ki, and it was used against them to perfection in this one. The crowd was into this match throughout, counting along with referee JD Sanders on every nearfall as it looked like on several occasions that we were going to kick off this event with brand new World Tag Team champions. However, the WGTT narrowly escaped every predicament, whether it be with a kickout or a save at the last possible moment. The turning point in this one came when Low-Ki had Benjamin set up in the corner and went for a Tidal Crush, but Benjamin moved. Ki was coming in with such momentum that he overshot a bit and kicked the top of the ring post, causing some damage to his foot and ankle. Benjamin got the tag into Has, who went straight for the Haas of Pain, not giving Low-Ki the breathing room to recover and/or make a tag. Low-Ki held on for over a minute but he was in a tremendous amount of pain and had to submit.

The World's Greatest Tag Team (Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin) defeated Elix Skipper and Low-Ki when C. Haas made Low-Ki submit to the Haas of Pain in 0:11:08.
Rating: *** 1/2
(The World's Greatest Tag Team retained the GCW World Tag Team Titles.)

Charlie Haas got out of the ring in a hurry as a livid Elix Skipper charged into the ring, but the damage had been done. Your winners and still World Tag Team champions, the World's Greatest Tag Team.

We cut to backstage where Kurt Angle is standing by with his brother Eric and Steve Bradley having just watched the conclusion to the opening contest. GCW interview specialist Mario Rivera enters the room to get Kurt's comments on tonight's main event where he will be challenging for the World Heavyweight Title. Kurt looked to be in a great mood, saying that February 20, 2005 is going to go down as a great night for Team Angle. Steve Bradley picked up a win over Rob Conway, the World Tag Team Titles stayed with the World's Greatest Tag Team, Eric Angle is going to stay undefeated and put Chris Benoit out of commission, and the topper would be Kurt Angle once again becoming the World Heavyweight champion. When Riviera asked him how he could be so sure, Kurt told him, "Just wait and see." Cryptic words from Kurt Angle indeed.

Match #2
Rey Mysterio Jr./Rhyno vs. CM Punk (Television champion)/Sean O'Haire (w/ Daffney)
This is a feud that has been brewing for months now, dating back to last September when Christopher Daniels defeated Rey Mysterio Jr. for the Television Title. Daniels is now on the shelf with an injury, but CM Punk is here after having been revealed as the infamous "He" that Daniels and Sean O'Haire had been eluding to for months. Punk is a sick man, having made it his goal to now not only destroy former President Ryan Niemiller (which he succeeded at) but also put Mysterio and Rhyno out of GCW as well. This tag match was then signed by Commissioner Tommy Dreamer after the Prophecy got involved in singles matches of Mysterio and Rhyno, and added the special stipulation that if Mysterio and Rhyno won, whoever scored the fall would get a Television Title shot tomorrow night on Explosion.

We didn't expect to see it between Mysterio and Rhyno, but as the match wore on, we noticed some dissension in the ranks. Both men were looking to score the fall as they wanted the shot at the Television Title, and that led to a complete breakdown of teamwork. By the end Mysterio and Rhyno got into a shoving match which the Prophecy tried to take advantage of with a sneak attack, but the faces saw it coming and fended them off. Mysterio dumped CM Punk out of the ring while Rhyno had O'Haire set up for the Gore. However, Rhyno missed and instead almost ripped Rey Mysterio in half with the vicious move. While Rhyno checked on his partner, O'Haire showed great strength by picking the Manbeast up and dropping him with the Prophecy, followed by the Seanton Bomb to put this match away.

The Prophecy (CM Punk and Sean O'Haire) defeated Rey Mysterio Jr. and Rhyno when O'Haire pinned Rhyno with the Seanton Bomb in 0:07:11.
Rating: *** 1/4

The added stipulation of the potential TV Title shot ended up hurting Mysterio and Rhyno a lot more than it did the Prophecy. Rhyno left the ring without even checking on Rey Mysterio Jr., who was holding his ribs.

Match #3
Cruiserweight Title Ladder Match
Paul London (c) vs. "The Phenomenal" AJ Styles vs. Frankie "The Future" Kazarian
We knew that this one was going to be crazy, and we were not at all disappointed as Paul London put up his Cruiserweight Title in a ladder match also featuring AJ Styles and Frankie Kazarian. The things that these three managed to do with a ladder were absolutely astounding. How everyone walked out of this match with no major injuries is beyond me. This one became a matter of who would be able to reach down deep into the reserves. Kazarian showed that he was willing to do whatever it took to become the Cruiserweight champion, taking a series of crazy dives to try to incapacitate his opponents. The most amazing part of this match was near the end when Kazarian and Styles had worked themselves to the top rope, and Kazarian was trying to set up for the Flux Capacitor, an absolutely amazing move, but Styles reversed out of it and caught Kazarian with the Styles Clash from the top! The crowd was chanting "HOLY SHIT!" and rightfully so after that sequence. London saw both Kazarian and Styles down and began to climb the ladder toward the Cruiserweight Title, but when he got to the top, he couldn't resist as the crowd was cheering him on to do something big, and that's just what he did as he jumped off and hit the London Calling onto AJ Styles off the ladder! There was not a single fan sitting in the Bradley Center as London slowly regained his bearings, climbed the ladder, and successfully retained the Cruiserweight Title.

No-Countout-No-DQ-Triangle Ladder Match:
Paul London defeated Frankie Kazarian and AJ Styles in 0:22:53.
Rating: *** 1/2
(Paul London retained the GCW Cruiserweight Title.)

What an astounding match! Somehow Paul London found a way to get the job done and keep the Cruiserweight Title around his waist as it has remained for the past six months. With as red hot as London is, he could go down as one of the best cruiserweights ever.

Mario Riviera kept himself busy as he was backstage for an interview with Randy Orton, another one of the competitors in tonight's main event Fatal Fourway for the World Heavyweight Title. Riviera kept it simple by asking what Orton's thoughts were about his chances in the main event, and Orton, always outspoken, was more than willing to give him an answer. Orton said, "For the past few weeks, everyone has been stopping me at airports, on the street, wherever asking me, 'Why have you been doing what you've done to Chris Jericho? I thought he was your friend!' Chris Jericho IS my friend. He's a good friend of mine, and that's why I'm not worried about what I've done. Jericho knows how this works. There's friendship, and then there's the World Heavyweight Title. There will be plenty of time for Jericho and I to have dinner, hang out, be buddy buddy... AFTER I am the World Heavyweight champion." At this point, CHRIS JERICHO entered the picture and got right in Orton's face. "Friends, Randy? Friends? Sure, we're friends. We're great friends. Friends walk out on each other during matches all the time. Friends interfere in friends' matches and nail them with the R.K.O. on the concrete floor. Oh yeah, that's exactly what friends do. And you wanna know what else friends do, junior? Friends have no problem beating the holy hell out of punk asses like you to RETAIN the World Heavyweight Title! See you in the ring... lilac." Jericho left as quickly as he had entered, leaving Orton fuming.

Match #4
"The Crippler" Chris Benoit vs. Eric Angle
Eric Angle has amassed a hefty winning streak, yet to suffer a single defeat since he made his GCW debut in May. Despite the impressive string of wins he has compiled, many people still are tentative to put Eric Angle in the upper tier of the wrestling elite. Eric Angle hasn't secured that marquee victory to set him apart. Well he had that opportunity tonight as he took on the former World Heavyweight champion "The Crippler" Chris Benoit. Though this is their first singles match, they are unofficially tied at one a piece. Benoit showed that he could make Angle tap a few weeks ago in an interview segment, while Angle got a clean pin on Benoit this past Monday on Explosion.

Benoit asserted himself right off the bat with his technical wrestling prowess that was frustrating Eric Angle to the point that Angle had to make more than one trip to the floor to regain his bearings. Benoit was outwrestling Eric Angle, and as an Angle, Eric was simply too proud to abandon that strategy. Angle stubbornly kept trying to wrestle Benoit and Benoit was consistently getting the upperhand. Benoit was even getting a smile across his face as he was picking Angle apart, which is something you rarely see from the Rabid Wolverine in a match. That smile would turn upside down though when Benoit would try to dive at Angle in the corner but miss and crack his left shoulder hard on the ring post.

Angle had a window, and he exploited it by going right to work on Benoit's arm and shoulder. Angle tried a variety of submission holds, but none of them could do the trick. We thought Angle might have this one after a huge shoulderbreaker, but Benoit got his foot on the bottom rope just in the knick of time. Things were looking bleak for Benoit until he was able to slide out of an Angle Slam try, catch Angle in the back of the had with a hard right forearm shot, and hit a desperation German suplex. Benoit got himself to the top rope and connected with the swandive headbutt, but he landed awkwardly on his arm and it took him a few moments to get the cover, allowing Angle to kick out. Benoit locked on the Crippler Crossface, but because of the damage he had sustained to his shoulder, was unable to lock it on tight. Angle worked his way to his knees and then to his feet, sliding behind Benoit and hitting the Angle Slam. Angle had to recover himself and couldn't make a timely cover, but he did lock on an armbar submission in the center of the ring. Benoit was in an excruciating amount of pain, but refused to quit, inching himself toward the ropes. However every time he got close, Angle pulled him back into the center of the ring. Angle wrenched Benoit's arm to a sickening angle and Benoit had no choice but to tap out.

Eric Angle made Chris Benoit submit to an armbar submission in 0:14:32.
Rating: *** 1/2

After the match, Angle refused to release the hold, cranking it harder and harder. It took referee Petey Pluck almost a minute to finally get Angle to release the hold. Angle was looking to injure Benoit, plain and simple. This was the marquee win that Eric Angle needed. Chris Benoit is a proud man and you know it had to kill him to submit, but with the angle that Angle was putting his arm at, it was either give up or risk permanent injury. Eric Angle isn't going to let us hear the end of this.

Goldust is standing by backstage with Sharmell. Goldust is scheduled to wrestle with his partner Booker T against the Hardy Boyz in our next match, but Booker T was nowhere to be seen. Sharmell hangs up a cell phone as Goldust immediately asks if Booker is coming or not. Sharmell said she only got the voice mail, but she wasn't counting on Booker T "being a man and showing his black ass up." Goldust was noticeably nervous about having to wrestle the Hardy Boyz again by himself, but Sharmell assured him that it would be okay and she'd be down at ringside with him. That did little to cheer Goldust up, who looked on saddened and depressed.

* * * * *

We had a surprise next as "The Heartbreak Kid" Shawn Michaels was introduced and came out for a surprise interview. HBK started by thanking the fans for all that they've done for him, for the support they've given him throughout the years, and for being the reason he came to work day in and day out. He wasn't here just to be mushy though, as he had an announcement. He came out to say that because of the back injury he reaggravated in a couple of months ago, in addition to the brutal attack at the hands of Eddie Guerrero and a sledgehammer, he was officially announcing his retirement as an active in-ring competitor. HBK was very emotional as he was all ready to leave the ring for possibly the final time when he was interrupted by the music of a man who was very instrumental in making this happen, "Latino Heat" Eddie Guerrero. Guerrero came down and in a very sarcastic way, showed his "sadness" over HBK's bad luck and his having to "quit like a little baby with his tail tucked between his legs." Eddie went on to berate HBK, trying to bait him into a fight. HBK would have none of it though, taking the higher road and choosing to leave the ring. This was a mistake as he turned his back on the unstable Guerrero, and Latino Heat nailed Michaels with a hard knee to the back knocking him to the floor. Eddie targeted the back of Michaels, throwing him hard into the ring steps and smashing a steel chair over his back. HBK showed a lot of bravery by pulling himself back up to his feet, but it was a foolish kind of bravery as Eddie dotted him between the eyes with the cold steel, busting HBK wide open. Guerrero saw the blood and if it were possible, became even more crazed as he started punching away at Michaels' wound. Eddie got a scary look on his face as he took off the top half of the ring steps and threw them away before grabbing HBK in a standing headscissors. Eddie hoisted Michaels up and drilled him into the ring steps with a vicious power bomb that landed with a sickening thud. The GCW Official Brigade finally got out to break this up, but the damage had quite obviously been done as Shawn Michaels had to be stretchered out and taken to a nearby hospital. If Shawn Michaels' announcement wasn't enough to guarantee we'd never see him in a GCW ring again, this attack was. I hope that Guerrero is proud of himself.

Match #5
The Hardy Boyz (w/ Lita) vs. Goldust/Booker T (w/ Sharmell)
It looked like it was going to be another night of the same in the saga of Goldust and Booker T as Goldust came to the ring without a partner yet again. The Hardy Boyz almost felt sory for Goldust, especially Matt Hardy, who looked to be going at less than full speed. Jeff Hardy, however, was not holding anything back, and getting frustrated at Matt for not doing the same. After a few minutes of a two-on-one beating (Goldust got in some offense, but it was few and far between), Matt Hardy hit Goldust with the Twist of Fate and then tagged in Jeff Hardy, who was looking to hit the Swanton Bomb when BOOKER T came dashing to the ring and shoved Jeff off the top! The crowd exploded at arrival of Booker, who got on the apron and was begging Goldust to make the tag. Goldust was groggy and didn't realize Booker was even there. When Goldust got to his feet and saw Booker, his face lit up with a huge smile as he collapsed into the tag. Booker was in and he was a house of fire, taking both Hardyz down with clothesline after clothesline after back elbow after back elbow. Booker dumped Matt Hardy out of the ring with a clothesline and turned into a shot from Jeff Hardy. Jeff went for a Twist of Fate of his own, but Booker shoved him into the ropes and hit a boot to the midsection, followed by a gigantic Axe Kick for the 1-2-3!

Booker T and Goldust defeated The Hardy Boyz (Jeff Hardy and Matt Hardy) when Booker pinned J. Hardy with the Axe Kick in 0:08:13.
Rating: *** 1/2

Booker T has finally had a change of heart, and what an impact he made tonight as he and Goldust beat one of the best tag teams of the past 10 years! Goldust was ecstatic as he celebrated with Booker T, giving him a huge hug. The look on Booker's face was priceless as I don't think he's quite ready for this stage in the relationship, but it looks like Sharmell has finally convinced Booker to be a man and hold up his end of the partnership with Goldust. And let me be the first to commend Booker T on finally standing up and being a man. As unorthodox as the team is, if they can remain on the same page, they could be a force in the tag team scene.

* * * * *

After the match, Jeff Hardy was irate, grabbing the microphone and essentially blaming his brother Matt for this, as he called it "highly embarrassing" loss. Jeff went on to verbally tear into his brother, saying, "When I agreed to come back to wrestling and be your partner, I didn't come back to be a freakin' loser! We just lost to a couple of freaks!" That in itself was an ironic statement as Jeff was covered in various colors of body paint at the time, but I digress. After Jeff tore into Matt some more, he said he was tired of this and he was tired of Matt, and that he quit. Matt tried to talk some sense into him, but as far as we know, he was unable to change his mine, and Jeff Hardy has quit Global Championship Wrestling.

Match #6
North American Title Match
"The Alpha Male" Monty Brown (c) vs. John Bradshaw Layfield (w/ Shaniqua & Lamont)
We knew that this match between Monty Brown and John Bradshaw Layfield wasn't going to be pretty, as these are two guys who given the choice between a wrestling match and a bar fight, they're going to go for the latter every time. And with the size, strength, and stature of these two, it was hard to predict who was going to walk out of here as the North American champion. The early minutes of this match were very ugly and very back and forth; just two big strong guys clubbing the crap out of each other. The champion began to build the momentum as the minutes wore on though, which is when Shaniqua called for the reinforcements. The Basham Brothers ran out, obviously looking to get involved, but out came THE HURRICANE, and he had a chair in hand! The Hurricane who had suffered a massive beating on High Voltage at the hands of the Bashams was looking to extract some revenge. The Bashams saw him coming though, and they both hightailed it out of there, being chased by a crazed chair-wielding superhero.

With the Bashams out of it, Shaniqua called on ABYSS to come down and help. Abyss came to the ring, but he refused to get involved (probably out of fear that the crowd would boo him if he did). JBL saw that Abyss was not willing to help and he was furious, yelling at the behemoth and calling him every name in the book. After thoroughly making Abyss feel about three inches tall, JBL turned around - right into the Pounce! Brown made the cover and the Alpha Male is still the North American champion.

Monty Brown pinned John Bradshaw Layfield with the Pounce in 0:08:58.
Rating: *** 1/2
(Monty Brown retained the GCW North American Title.)

JBL and the Cabinet had a plan tonight to wrangle the North American Title off of Monty Brown, but it looks like Abyss must have missed the memo. If JBL was pissed at Abyss before, imagine how furious he's going to be at him now. Either way, Monty Brown is quietly becoming a fantastic North American champion, having already held the title for four months. I don't know who can step up and take the gold off of him at this point.

Match #7
Fatal Fourway for the World Heavyweight Title
"Y2J" Chris Jericho (c) vs. Randy Orton vs. Kurt Angle vs. "Latino Heat" Eddie Guerrero
There was only one more match to go, and it was for the Big One. "Y2J" Chris Jericho won the World Heavyweight Title a month ago on January 13th from Kurt Angle in a Cage Match, and has been practically begging the GCW Championship Committee to give him title defenses. Well he had his work cut out for him as he had to defend not only against Kurt Angle, but against Randy Orton and Eddie Guerrero as well. The rules for this Fatal Fourway were simple. All four men were in the ring at the same time. This match was also one fall to a finish, meaning that the first pinfall or submission would win this match. That completely took away the championship advantage for Jericho as he didn't even have to be pinned to lose the title.

This match wasn't officially no disqualification, but head referee Jimmy Appleseed understood the importance of this match and he let a lot slide in this one. Due to the nature of this match, there were also many temporary alliances formed and consequently broken throughout the match. It is almost necessary in a contest like this because in order to get a chance to get the win, you need to incapacitate the other two opponents so as to put the third away. This match was tricky for anyone to win because these are four of the best conditioned athletes in the world so you have to do a lot to put them down. After almost 40 minutes of great action, Eddie Guerrero was looking to put Jericho out of it when he laid him out on the announce table and climbed to the top turnbuckle. He was going to presumably jump on Y2J with the Frog Splash through the table, but Randy Orton didn't allow it as he shoved Eddie off to the outside causing him to crash hard chest first into the guardrail.

With Guerrero not able to get much oxygen on the floor, we were left with Jericho, Orton, and Angle in the ring. Angle was looking to catch Orton with the Angle Slam right after the aforementioned incident, but Orton spun out of it and dropped Angle with the R.K.O.! Orton was rolling and it looked like he ahd the title won, but Jericho was able to get back in the ring and break up the count just in time. Jericho got Orton turned over in the Walls of Jericho after a struggle, but Orton refused to submit. I'm not sure how Orton held on as he was in the move for quite some time. I guess the sheer will to win and adrenaline fueled Orton, but the third generation star simply wouldn't quit and held on long enough for Angle to recover and break up the hold with a DDT on Y2J. Angle dumped Orton out of the ring and put Jericho in the Ankle Lock. Jericho was writhing in pain, trying desperately to make his way to the ropes. Orton was getting back to his feet to try to break it up, but Eddie Guerrero came out of nowhere and blasted him in the back with a steel chair! Orton was out, and before Eddie could get into the ring to break up the submission hold himself, Jericho tapped out to the ultra painful Ankle Lock.

Four Corners Match:
Kurt Angle defeated Eddie Guerrero, Randy Orton and Chris Jericho when K. Angle made Jericho submit to the Ankle Lock in 0:48:59.
Rating: *****
(Kurt Angle won the GCW World Heavyweight Title.)

Kurt Angle is once again the World Heavyweight champion! After almost 50 minutes of grueling action, Angle was able to pull it out with his deadly Ankle Lock submission and a whole lot of luck. As far as Kurt Angle is concerned, all of the wrongs of January 13th have been righted as he is for the second time holding the top title in our sport. You have to believe that we are going to hear a lot more about this on Explosion tomorrow night. We went off the air with Team Angle joining Kurt in the ring celebrating an undefeated night for the group, but none bigger than Kurt regaining the World Title. Goodnight everybody!
rey619Posted on 11/14/05 at 11:48:16

A great way to end the show, although I'm a little baffled by the TNA-like reign of Chris Jericho  ???

I really hope Rey Rey won't go after Rhyno.. that will hurt.. a lot!
Snabbit888Posted on 11/14/05 at 16:32:40

The reign was always meant to be transitional.  It was to put over how Angle was running from Lesnar and wouldn't give him a shot, so Lesnar cost Angle the title.  Jericho would have given Lesnar the shot, but Lesnar went and injured himself so hey, new plans. :)  Jericho was never meant to be a longterm champ though.
americamamushiPosted on 11/15/05 at 00:13:28

B-I-G opener here tonight.  Good showing.  I smell re-match.  Team Angle is off to a great start.

1/1

I figured it'd be hard for Rey and Rhyno to win because of the title stip, but I thought they'd manage to pull it out somehow.  I have a feeling Rey is gonna be facing Rhyno soon because of that Gore, that is if they had sew him back together.

1/2

Amazing match.  The GCW Cruisers sure can deliver.

1/3

Angle keeps his winning streak alive.  If Eric keeps this up he may find himself facing Kurt one of these days.

2/4

Wow, HBK is gone.  That segment was came off as classic psycho heel Guerrero.  Good job.  At least we know that Eddie will always live on in TNM

I wasn't expecting Booker to actually show up.  Not only that, he won the match for them.  Guess Booker T likes sex with his wife more than Goldust-hating.

2/5

Yay!  Jeff Hardy quit!  *clears throat* Sorry... I mean... tough break... ;)

Abyss is in trouble now.  That Pounce couldn't have felt good and JBL is gonna take it out on everybody but himself.

3/6

Great Main event.  Angle snatches the title back and something tells me he's gonna be more carefull to keep it in his hands.  Angle is going to be tickle pink on Explosion tomorrow.  It'll be sickening ;)

4/7

You sure know how to deliver on a PPV wrestle buddy.

Question: HBK & Jeff Hardy out of GCW, writing or TNM screwing you? :)
Snabbit888Posted on 11/15/05 at 00:15:02

HBK - writing

Jeff Hardy - ... also writing.
