[GCW] Monday Night Explosion - 1/24/05

Snabbit888Posted on 10/01/05 at 09:42:38

With only six more days until the first pay-per-view of the year, Winter Warfare, there were still many questions to be answered. What is the health status of Elix Skipper? Will Christopher Daniels be able to defend the Television Title? Is new commissioner Tommy Dreamer going to grant Kurt Angle his rematch for the World Heavyweight Title, and if so, when? We looked to get answers to these questions from the 1st Mariner Arena in Baltimore, Maryland for Monday Night Explosion! We know that tonight Rhyno will go one-on-one with Abyss, Justin Credible will pray for his life against Brock Lesnar, and Christopher Daniels has an open contract for a Television Title match, but will he be able to compete? Also, in a huge main event, it's eight-man tag team action as World Heavyweight champion Chris Jericho, Randy Orton, Low-Ki, and Chris Benoit take on Eric Angle, Steve Bradley, Charlie Haas, and Shelton Benjamin of Team Angle!

Match #1
Rey Mysterio Jr./Paul London (Cruiserweight champion) vs. Sean O'Haire/"The Phenomenal" AJ Styles (w/ Daffney)
In a preview of two big singles matches for Winter Warfare, Rey Mysterio Jr. and Paul London teamed up to take on Sean O'Haire and AJ Styles. it was obvious from the get-go that teamwork was not going to be on the side of O'Haire and Styles. They had some problems over the summer and showed obviously that old wounds don't necessarily close over time. By the end of this match, the team of O'Haire and Styles had all but unraveled after Styles accidentally hit O'Haire with a flying forearm. Styles didn't seem to distraught over it as he simply headed for the back, leaving O'Haire open to the 6-1-9 from Mysterio and the London Calling from the Cruiserweight champion.

Rey Mysterio Jr. and Paul London defeated Sean O'Haire and AJ Styles when London pinned O'Haire with the London Calling in 0:09:01.
Rating: *** 1/4

A lot of momentum was garnered for Mysterio and London as they go into their huge matches at the pay-per-view. They have to be careful not to get too sure of themselves as Sean O'Haire is always dangerous and AJ Styles will stop at nothing to get the Cruiserweight Title off of Paul London.

Match #2
The Hurricane vs. Frankie "The Future" Kazarian
Frankie Kazarian was once again in action this week, and he looked good again getting a sound victory over The Hurricane. The Man In Green didn't make it easy on the self-proclaimed future of Global Championship Wrestling, giving him all that he could handle. However, once Kazarian hit the Wave of the Future, that was all she wrote.

Frankie Kazarian pinned The Hurricane with the Wave of the Future in 0:06:09.
Rating: *** 1/2

Kazarian keeps rolling, and The Hurricane will look to rebound at Winter Warfare when he takes on Justin Credible.

After this match, we received an update on the condition of Elix Skipper, who was attacked viciously a week ago, presumably by the World's Greatest Tag Team. We learned that Skipper suffered a concussion that will put him out for a few weeks, but he should come back good as new. However, with this injury, he will be unable to participate in War Games this Sunday. I'm sure much to the chagrin of Team Angle, World Heavyweight champion Chris Jericho, Randy Orton, Chris Benoit, and Low-Ki will be able to search for a replacement for their team.

Match #3
Matt Morgan vs. "Latino Heat" Eddie Guerrero
Matt Morgan's rough initiation into GCW continued this week by taking on another sadistic veteran, Eddie Guerrero. Morgan once again showed that he's big enough and he's strong enough to get the upperhand almost at will. His problem seems to be that once he gets that upperhand, he doesn't know how to capitalize on it. Guerrero, like I said, is a veteran, and knows how to chop down a few trees, and he got one tonight by getting Morgan down and hitting the Frog Splash.

Eddie Guerrero pinned Matt Morgan with the Frog Splash in 0:04:17.
Rating: ** 1/2

Guerrero wasn't happy with just winning the match as he wanted to send a message to North American champion Monty Brown. Eddie grabbed a chair from ringside and wrapped it around Morgan's ankle, preparing to "Pillmanize" it. Eddie climbed up to the second turnbuckle but before he could jump, MONTY BROWN intervened, catching Latino Heat as he jumped and dropping him with a powerslam. Eddie was quick back to his feet, and luckily for him he was aware enough to see the Pounce was coming and got out in the ring in a heart beat. He'll need that kind of awareness if he wants a chance to beat Brown in the No-Holds-Barred match this Sunday.

Match #4
Rhyno vs. Abyss (w/ Shaniqua & Lamont)
A week ago, Abyss, at Shaniqua's request, cost Rhyno a match against John Bradshaw Layfield. The crowd booed Abyss, which the monster didn't like, as he has been garnering more cheers than boos recently. Rhyno doesn't care about Abyss' popularity though, and just wanted some retribution here in this one. For awhile, this match was ugly. Two massive men beating the living tar out of each other for several minutes, both failing to seize the opportunities to put the match away. In the end of the struggle, Shaniqua became impatient and tried to intervene, jumping in the ring with her riding crop while Lamont distracted the referee. Shaniqua took a swing at Rhyno, but missed and cracked Abyss between the eyes. Shaniqua left the ring furious at what just happened, and became more incensed when Rhyno hit the Gore on Abyss for the 1-2-3.

Rhyno pinned Abyss with the Gore in 0:14:48.
Rating: *** 1/2

After the match, Shaniqua chastised Abyss for his loss as if it was his fault. Abyss started to rise up like he was going to fight back, but one slap from Shaniqua and Abyss was back under control. One cannot discount what a huge victory this was for Rhyno with his shot at the Television Title this Sunday.

* * * * *

Backstage, a cameraman tried to sneak in and overhear a conversation involving World Heavyweight champion Chris Jericho and Randy Orton. They were talking to a third party, but the third party was shielded by a wall. Jericho and Orton were attempting to recruit whoever his third person was, but before that person could respond, Orton caught eye of the cameraman and ushered him away before slamming the door shut. Who were they talking to?

Match #5
Brock Lesnar vs. Justin Credible
Justin Credible tried to kiss new commissioner Tommy Dreamer's ass a week ago, but Dreamer saw right through it and decided to put Credible in a match against the most devastating force in GCW Brock Lesnar. With the state of mind Lesnar is in, Credible didn't stand a chance. Credible got some mediocre offense in, but the outcome of this match was never in doubt. Lesnar looked like he could have had fun destroying Credible all night, but he chose to put this one away after the F-5.

Brock Lesnar pinned Justin Credible with the F-5 in 0:03:39.
Rating: *** 1/4

I have never seen anyone as dominant as Brock Lesnar looks to be right now. I don't think anyone in GCW could defeat the Monster From Minnesota right now.

The Prophecy in full came out next as "Fallen Angel" Christopher Daniels was supposed to have an open contract for the Television Title, a dangerous thing to do this close to his defense against Rhyno at Winter Warfare. Daniels came out in a sling, a necessity after tearing his left triceps last night on High Voltage. Daniels grabbed the microphone and said he'd love to kick someone's ass tonight, but because of his injuries, he would not be able to do so. Tommy Dreamer came out and said that if Daniels wouldn't defend the TV Title here tonight, he would have no choice but to strip him of the title. CM Punk didn't want to see the Prophecy lose control of the title, and grabbed the microphone away from Daniels and said he would accept the open contract and wrestle Daniels for the gold. Dreamer didn't seem to have a problem with this if Daniels was willing, but before Daniels could respond, CM Punk told the Fallen Angel that he would accept, or else. Daniels agreed, and we had ourselves a highly strange Television Title match.

Match #6
Television Title Match
"Fallen Angel" Christopher Daniels (c) vs. CM Punk (All of the Prophecy at ringside)
CM Punk felt the Television Title slipping away from the grasp of the Prophecy, so he responded quickly by accepting the open challenge of his injured follower Christopher Daniels. Daniels was more than willing to simply lay down and let Punk pin him, but for some reason, Punk began to beat on Daniels. Sean O'Haire and Daffney looked confused on the outside, but didn't dare say a word. Daniels was in obvious pain, clutching his left arm throughout the short but intense beating. CM Punk capped it off by grabbing Daniels' injured left arm and locking on a Fujiwara armbar. Daniels tapped out immediately, and the Fallen Angel had fallen.

CM Punk made Christopher Daniels submit to a Fujiwara armbar in 0:00:52.
Rating: *
(CM Punk won the GCW Television Title.)

We have a brand new Television champion in CM Punk. After the match, O'Haire and Daffney tried to help Daniels, but Punk called them off and took them to the back, leaving Daniels alone in the ring. We have learned that it will be several months before we see Christopher Daniels in the ring again. In the meantime, it has been officially announced that Punk's first defense as new Television champion will be this Sunday against Rhyno.

Match #7
The Hardy Boyz (w/ Lita) vs. Booker T/Goldust
Before our big main event, we had some tag team action pitting the Hardy Boyz against the struggling team of Booker T and Goldust. In recent weeks, Booker T has completely refused to tag into matches, leaving Goldust out to dry. This time, Goldust was trying to give Booker some of his own medicine, jumping out of the ring before the bell and making Booker start the match. Goldust was giving Booker the cold shoulder, refusing to tag in just as Booker has. Eventually though, as the Hardyz were working Booker over, Goldust couldn't stand the sight of his man being beaten and tagged in. Goldust came in and cleaned house, bumping Matt and Jeff around the ring. After dropping both Jeff and Matt with powerslams, Goldust went to tag Booker back in to let him getting the win, but Booker once again refused to make the tag! Goldust was shocked, leaving him open to a Twist of Fate from Matt Hardy. However, when Jeff Hardy was up top for the Swanton Bomb, John Bradshaw Layfield and his Cabinet rushed to the ring and started beating on the Hardyz, Goldust, and Booker T.

The Hardy Boyz (Jeff Hardy and Matt Hardy) and Booker T and Goldust battled to a no contest in 0:05:11.
Rating: *** 1/2

JBL, Abyss, and the Bashams cleared the ring, JBL grabbed the microphone. He said that earlier tonight, Abyss had embarassed the Cabinet with his loss to Rhyno. In order to fix the damage Abyss did, JBL wanted an 8-man tag against any four men at Winter Warfare. After what just happened here, it was no surprise that the Hardyz and Goldust accepted that challenge, and since Booker T is contractually obligated to team with Goldust, he's in the match as well.

* * * * *

Before our main event, Kurt Angle walked into the office of Tommy Dreamer, demanding to know when he would be receiving his rematch for the World Heavyweight Title. Dreamer said that as of right now, he couldn't answer that question. Angle was furious and wanted to know why, but Dreamer responded simply by saying, "Win War Games, then we'll talk."

Match #8
MAIN EVENT
On Commentary: Kurt Angle
"Y2J" Chris Jericho (World Heavyweight champion)/Randy Orton/"The Crippler" Chris Benoit/Low-Ki vs. Eric Angle/Steve "Who's Your Daddy?" Bradley/The World's Greatest Tag Team (World Tag Team champions)
Our main event was a preview of War Games with World Heavyweight champion Chris Jericho, Randy Orton, Chris Benoit, and Low-Ki taking on all of Team Angle sans its leader, Kurt Angle. But Kurt was on color commentary to keep a close eye on things. The match itself was your standard 8-man affair. The major thing of note during the match was that Jericho and Orton, who had all kinds of trouble with teamwork a week ago when they challenged the World Greatest Tag Team for the tag titles a week ago, seemed very much on the same page tonight, frequently tagging each other in. By the end of this match though, it was Chris Benoit with Charlie Haas in the Crippler Crossface. Not wanting the embarassment of losing this match by submission, Kurt Angle ran from the broadcast position and broke it up, causing the disqualification.

Chris Jericho, Chris Benoit, Low-Ki and Randy Orton defeated Team Angle (Charlie Haas, Eric Angle, Shelton Benjamin and Steve Bradley) when Benoit defeated C. Haas by disqualification in 0:11:48.
Rating: *** 1/4

The brawl was on, but soon the 5-on-4 advantage for Team Angle paid dividends as they had the advantage. That was until BROCK LESNAR ran down and began to clean house! An overhead belly-to-belly suplex for each of the World Tag Team champions. A power bomb for Steve Bradley. A spinebuster for Eric Angle. Lesnar even had Kurt scooped up for the F-5, but Kurt hooked the top rope and managed to pull himself to the safety of the floor. Lesnar then grabbed the microphone, looked right at Chris Jericho and said, "You need a fifth man? YOU'RE LOOKING AT HIM!" Brock Lesnar will be the fifth man for War Games!

The card for Winter Warfare is now finalized! The Fleet Center in Boston, Massachusetts will surely be witness to a fantastic night of wrestling!

War Games - Team Angle (Kurt Angle/Eric Angle/Steve Bradley/Shelton Benjamin/Charlie Haas) vs. Chris Jericho/Randy Orton/Chris Benoit/Low-Ki/Brock Lesnar

Nice opener

OoOoOo... mystery partner.  *sells the anticipation*

Too bad for Morgan.  He had a good thing going with the prez.  Monty vs. Eddie should be good.

Rhyno & Abyss are definitely two beasts.  Before the match I might have put Abyss at a slightly higher beast rating, but Rhyno picking up the win puts him up slightly higher in the beastial ratings in my eyes (Also put beastiality rating ;) )

Poor Credible.  He should be lighter now.  After all Lesnar did just knock the shit out of him. :)

Interesting turn of events on the Daniels injury.  I like CM Punk with the title in Daniels' stead though.  Punk's reign may not be long though, Rhyno proved earlier he's no push over.

NO!  Booker & Goldie were gonna pull the upset!  I know it!  I could feel it!

WHOA!  Lesnar is the mystery man!  War Games is gonna be hell for Team Angle.

Great shtuff butterball.
