[GCW] Mayhem - 5/23/04

Snabbit888Posted on 05/28/04 at 03:48:51

The wait is over! It's Sunday, May 23, 2004, and the arena in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is jam-packed to the rafters! It's time for Mayhem! Five titles will be on the line, as well as we'll have a definitive number-one contender for the World Heavyweight Title decided. Action kicked off right away with the Television Title being up for grabs!

Match #1
Television Title Match
"The Role Model" AJ Styles (c) vs. The Amazing Red
After the ring introductions were made, AJ Styles grabbed the microphone from William Buck, our trusty ringside announcer.

* * * * *

[AJ Styles holds onto the Television Title as referee Antonio Santangelo attempts to take it. He has the microphone in hand. The Amazing Red stands across the ring from Styles.]

AJ: Red, you could learn a lot from me. When I work hard, I get things done. You've worked hard, Red, and you want the Television Title. Well, I got the Television Title! And I'm afraid that you [Indicates Red's small stature] are going to come up a little bit short!

[Styles throws the microphone outside the ring and hands Santangelo the Television Title. Santangelo holds the title up in the air, indicating it's on the line, and then signals for the bell.]

* * * * *

The match was on, and it was a great one. Red is the only competitor thus far who has been able to defeat AJ Styles, doing so in the first round of the Cruiserweight Title Tournament. Styles' bravado early on seemed ill-advised as Red was fired up, flying all over the place, taking the Television champion down with a variety of huracanranas and arm drags. Red has been the targets of Styles' attacks for weeks now, and knows that Styles will do anything to keep his title, so Red tried to end this one as early as possible. Styles knows what to do in the ring though, as he kept himself alive long enough to pop Red with a hard clothesline after duck a spin kick attempt by the Brooklyn native.

Styles controlled the middle part of this match, wisely grounding Red, eliminating much of his high-flying offense. The more and more Red kicked out of pinning predicaments, the more and more frustrated AJ Styles became. Styles jumped to the top rope looking to hit one big move to keep Red down, but the 140-pound Red was able to jump to the top with Styles and nail him with an enzuigiri that almost knocked the champion to the floor! Red followed and hit a top-rope huracanrana, but when he went for the cover, Styles got his shoulder up just in time. The crowd was really into it, hoping we were on the verge of a new champion to open up the pay-per-view. Red followed with the Red Star Press, but Styles got his foot on the rope just before he would have been an ex-champion. Red argued with referee Antonio Santangelo about the count, which turned out to be a mistake as he wasted some valuable time. Red went up top and called for the InfraRed, but Styles rolled out of the way. Styles and Red both slowly got to their feet, but Styles struck first with a boot to the midsection followed by the Styles Clash. That was all she wrote.

AJ Styles pinned Red with the Styles Clash in 0:09:12.
Rating: ****
(AJ Styles retained the GCW Television Title.)

Red put everything he had into it, but he just couldn't get it done tonight. Red will recover from this loss, but he can't help but be a little disappointed not to walk out the Television champion. Regardless, Red will team with Rey Mysterio Jr. tomorrow night in their World Tag Team Title match. AJ Styles, on the other hand, most likely will make sure we never hear the end of this.

[Back in the locker rooms, Shelton Benjamin is standing with his half of the World Tag Team Titles around his waist and he's holding a small black box with a black bow on it. He is looking at it with a puzzled look on his face when his tag team partner, Charlie Haas, walks in, also with the World Tag Team Title around his waist.]

CH: Hey, we're up. We gotta go. [Notices the black box Benjamin is holding] What in the world is that?

SB: I'm scared to even open it... it's from Shaniqua.

CH: That girl is bad news, Shelton.

SB: You're telling me. I don't want this thing, man.

CH: Then don't open it. Let's go.

SB: Yeah...

[Benjamin taps the box in his hands a couple times before setting it down on the bench. Haas slaps him on the back as they head out towards the ring. After a few moments, a knock is heard on the door and in enters Shaniqua, dressed in a very revealing black leather outfit and carrying her riding crop.]

S: Shelton? Shelton?

[Shaniqua notices her gift for Benjamin sitting on the bench.]

S: What the hell?

[Shaniqua picks up the box.]

S: He didn't want my gift? He didn't want my gift!? I'll MAKE HIM want my gift!

[Shaniqua storms out of the locker room. Cut to the ring.]

Match #2
World Tag Team Title Match
The World's Greatest Tag Team (c) vs. The Basham Brothers vs. Rob Conway/Nick Dinsmore
Shaniqua's obsession with Shelton Benjamin is becoming stranger and stranger by the week, and it reached a new high this week as Shaniqua presented Benjamin with a gift, a gift that Benjamin rejected. You could tell that during this match, Benjamin was distracted by Shaniqua's presence. Rob Conway and Nick Dinsmore came into this match with a great shot at taking home the World Tag Team Titles because Benjamin was distracted by Shaniqua and the Bashams didn't have the full attention of their manager.

Not the prettiest of matches here, but the raucous Philadelphia fans were into it. Near the end of this match, Charlie Haas was in the ring with Doug Basham. Shaniqua finally decided to confront Benjamin about rejecting her gift as she jumped up on the apron with him. Shaniqua opened the box to reveal that it was a ball gag, a ball gag that had Shelton Benjamin's initials on it! Benjamin was disgusted by this and started yelling at Shaniqua, resulting in referee Petey Pluck being distracted. As Pluck tried to get Shaniqua off the apron, Doug's brother Danny slid into the ring as they completed the double switch. However, Danny Basham was also holding a small metal pipe in his hand, unbeknowst to Charlie Haas. Haas whipped Danny Basham into the ropes and went for a clothesline, but Basham ducked and when he came shooting back off the ropes, hit Haas with a flying forearm with the pipe! Haas was unconscious and Danny Basham went for the cover as Pluck spun around and saw the pinfall, and we had new World Tag Team champions!

Triangle Match:
The Basham Brothers (Doug Basham and Danny Basham) defeated Rob Conway and Nick Dinsmore and The World's Greatest Tag Team (Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin) when Danny Basham pinned C. Haas after a flying forearm in 0:10:58.
Rating: ** 1/4

The Basham Brothers rolled out of the ring and grabbed the World Tag Team Titles, knowing that they just got away with one there. Benjamin jumped in the ring, upset that his losing focus is probably what cost he and Haas the World Tag Team Titles. Rob Conway and Nick Dinsmore also headed to the back, a little upset that they didn't walk away with the straps. Benjamin apologized to a groggy Haas about what happened, but Haas wasn't ready to here it yet, throwing his hands up and stomping to the back. Regardless, we have new World Tag Team champions.

Match #3
Diamond Dallas Page (w/ Kimberly) vs. "The Big Shot" Hardcore Holly
Hardcore Holly called out Diamond Dallas Page about DDP's lack of success since returning to the ring, but he should have worried more about not getting his as kicked here tonight. Holly calling DDP out was enough, but Hardcore made a big mistake by messing with DDP's wife Kimberly last week, as DDP was fired up. Holly was on the defensive and would fight back occasionally, but the fans just didn't care. Hardcore Holly's a tough guy and it took awhile (probably longer than it should have) but eventually, Holly fell victim to the Diamond Cutter as DDP earned his first pay-per-view win since returning to wrestling.

Diamond Dallas Page pinned Hardcore Holly with the Diamond Cutter in 0:12:36.
Rating: ** 3/4

Maybe this is a sign that things are looking up for Diamond Dallas Page.

Match #4
Cruiserweight Chaos Match
The Hurricane, Christopher Daniels, Elix Skipper, Teddy Hart, Shannon Moore, Shark Boy, Billy Kidman, Paul London
Before this match even got started, we had some controversy as when The Hurricane was introduced, he never came out. Instead, at the last second officials found The Amazing Red backstage and offered him the spot, which he gladly accepted. The match started out with a feeling out process between the 8 wrestlers, these usual risk takers being very cautious not to make a big mistake early. The wrestlers started to grow impatient though and that's when the fun began. It would be 8 and a half minutes before we would see our first elimination. Christopher Daniels flew at Paul London in the ring only to have London catch him in the chops with a dropkick. Daniels groggily got to his feet only to fall victim to a Northern Lights suplex that was enough to hold the Fallen Angel down for the 3. Paul London would strike a couple of minutes later when he hit a slingshot splash on Shark Boy, taking him out of contention.

London's luck ran out after that though, as Elix Skipper avenged his stablemate Daniels by nailing London from behind with a forearm while the latter was fighting with Teddy Hart. Skipper followed with the Play of the Day and Paul London was eliminated. Skipper got much too cocky after eliminating London, parading around the ring and playing to the crowd. It cost him in a big way as Shannon "All That And" Moore connected with a flying cross body press that surprised Prime Time enough to keep him down for the 3. Triple X, who we thought had a decided advantage in this one since they made up a fourth of the competitors, were now both eliminated.

At this point, we were told that there was an incident back in the locker room area. We rushed a camera back there and we found The Hurricane: he was lying unconscious on the floor of his locker room! Medical personnel were attempting to revive him, but it was apparent that he had been the victim of a pre-match attack. The only thing we didn't know was who did it.

We were down to four now: Shannon Moore, Teddy Hart, Billy Kidman, and The Amazing Red, who despite having already wrestled a match tonight, was not holding back in the least against his cruiserweight foes. The next few minutes featured a lot more high spots and risks as the wrestlers had more space to work with as half of the field was now in the locker room. The next man to go would be Red, as after 20 more minutes of intense action, he just couldn't take anymore. Red went for a rana, but Shannon Moore countered it with a big time power bomb. The Halo would follow, and Red would be heading back to the locker room. Kidman saw this as an opportunity though, as when Moore got to his feet, he was immediately caught by a rana, and Shannon Moore was gone! Kidman and Teddy Hart were the last two remaining, and Hart looked to stop that quickly as he caught Kidman in the back of the head with a springboard dropkick. Hart quickly got to the top rope and proceeded to nail the Open Hart Surgery, and in one of the quickest minutes I've ever seen, made the final elimination and earned himself a Cruiserweight Title shot at Super Cade!

8-Man Cruiserweight Chaos:
Teddy Hart won an 8-man Cruiserweight Chaos:
x London defeated Daniels after a Northern Lights suplex in 0:08:30
x London defeated Shark after a slingshot splash in 0:10:31
x Skipper defeated London after the Play Of The Day in 0:12:41
x S. Moore defeated Skipper after a flying cross body press in 0:13:16
x S. Moore defeated Red after the Halo in 0:20:40
x Kidman defeated S. Moore after a rana in 0:20:51
x Teddy Hart defeated Kidman after the Open Hart Surgery in 0:21:24
Rating: **** 1/2

The crowd exploded into cheers as they had just witnessed exactly what the cruiserweight division in Global Championship Wrestling is all about. Eight men worked their asses off and the standing ovation that Teddy Hart received is proof that it paid off. This is one that they'll be talking about for a long time, mark my words.

* * * * *

["The Heartbreak Kid" Shawn Michaels is getting ready for his match - the Number-One Contender match - by taping up his wrists when "Latino Heat" Eddie Guerrero enters the room. HBK stops what he is doing and stares at Guerrero for a bit. Eventually, Michaels speaks.]

HBK: What do you want, Eddie?

EG: Listen, holmes. I just wanted to apologize again. You know I didn't mean to do that, mang.

HBK: Yeah... I guess, Eddie. It's cool.

EG: We can let them divide us. If we're divided, they'll kick our asses, essa!

HBK: I'm not about to get my ass kicked.

EG: That's what I'm talking about! Tonight...

HBK: No, tonight, Eddie, we ARE divided. Kurt Angle and Chris Jericho, they've both given us a lot of problems, I know that. And any other night, yeah, Eddie, we'd be chums, good buddies. But TONIGHT, is much more important than that. It's not about friends, it's not about enemies. It's about becoming the number-one contender! There's no secrets anywhere about my back. My back isn't 100%. Every time I go out there to wrestle a match, I don't know if it's going to be my last! One false move and I'm done, just like that! Doctors, my wife, my kid, everyone thinks I'm ridiculous for even coming back to wrestling in the first place! But this is what I love. I LOVE this sport, and anyone who loves this sport has one major goal in mind, and that's to be the World Heavyweight champion. Thousands try, but very few men will ever get to hold that 20 pounds of gold and leather. So when you get that opportunity, you run with it, all friendships aside. So Eddie, I accept your apologize, but once that bell rings tonight, you're not my friend. Kurt Angle isn't my friend, Chris Jericho isn't my friend, it's Shawn Michaels against the world! And if you were wise...

[HBK gets right in Guerrero's face.]

HBK: ...it would be your attitude as well.

[After another brief staredown, Guerrero nods his head and slowly backs out of the locker room. Cut to the ring.]

Match #5
Lance Storm vs. Justin Credible
Justin Credible was nominated by the Sensationals to take Lance Storm out after Storm had scored upset wins over Kurt Angle and Chris Jericho in recent weeks. Credible was up to the task as it seems to be his life's mission now to make sure he impresses the Sensationals. It's a little sad really, but one can't argue that Credible has stepped it up a notch. It can also be seen in Lance Storm that he is a lot more confident each time he steps in the ring. No one doubts that Storm is one of the most technically gifted athletes in wrestling, but he needed a couple of big wins to get his confidence back. Well, his confidence is officially back. These two know each other very well, and it showed in the quality of this match. Tons of chain wrestling to start the match as the two were in a feeling out process, but that all changed when Credible went for the eyes and turned this one into a brawl. If Lance Storm does have a weakness in his technique, it's that he isn't proficient in brawling, whereas Credible is quite skilled in it.

Credible turned this into his match for much of the middle portion of this match, but the crowd was behind the Calgary, Alberta, Canada native all the way. Storm has developed himself quite a little following over the last few weeks. Despite the crowd response, things looked bleak for Storm as Credible signaled for his finisher, the That's Incredible tombstone piledriver. As Credible lifted Storm, Storm used his momentum to reverse it and flip Credible over and he nailed him with a Tombstone of his own out of sheer desperation! Storm was hurt though and couldn't capitalize right away, so when he finally made the cover, Credible was able to get his shoulder up. Storm was set to go on the offensive, but Credible caught him with a devastating low blow much to the displeasure of Philadelphia. Credible whipped Storm into the ropes, but when Storm came back, he baseball slid under Credible's leg, grabbing one of them as he went through, rolled back up and had Credible locked in the Maple Leaf! The crowd was on its feet as Credible tried to fight the pain, inching ever closer to the ropes though. However, Credible couldn't quite make it and he eventually tapped out.

Lance Storm defeated Justin Credible when Justin Credible passed out in the Maple Leaf in 0:11:07.
Rating: **** 1/4

The crowd stood with appreciation for Lance Storm's hard fought victory. Storm got up on the second turnbuckle and put his hands up to celebrate when he was suddenly blasted from behind by STEVE BRADLEY! Bradley started stomping away at Storm before picking him up and dropping him hard with a facebuster. Not finished yet, the self-proclaimed Baddest Mofo on the Show planted Lance Storm with a Spin Doctor he likes to call the Smashmouth. Bradley was being booed quite heavily now as he spit on the fallen Storm. Steve Bradley said he was going to make an impact tonight, and he most certainly did. Lance Storm got the win tonight, but he sure doesn't look like a winner right now.

Match #6
North American Title Match
Randy Orton (c) vs. "The Whole F'n Show" Rob Van Dam
Due to the absolute hatred that has developed in the Kurt Angle/Shawn Michaels/Chris Jericho/Eddie Guerrero situation, a bit has been lost in the feud between Randy Orton and Rob Van Dam. These two don't like each other very much, don't get me wrong, but the situation hasn't seen the spotlight due to it not being as aggressive in nature. However, we knew this still had the potential to be a good match, and it didn't disappoint. A month ago, no one thought Randy Orton would even be holding championship gold after John Cena won the North American Title, but after he abruptly left the company, Orton was there to seize the opportunity, winning the title in a Four Corners match in which he made the decisive pinfall on his opponent for tonight, Rob Van Dam. RVD got his rematch tonight though, and he didn't want it to be in vain.

A lot of wrestlers have a hard time preparing for RVD because of his unorthodox offense. Orton, being the third generation superstar that he is, knows this business very well for a man who is only 24 years old, and he adapted quite well to RVD's unique style. This match was very back and forth with neither man getting a clear cut advantage. That is, until RVD missed a Five Star Frog Splash at about the 7 minute mark. RVD landed awkwardly and may have hurt his ribs as he was having problems getting enough oxygen in his system after that. Van Dam got a few desperation moves in here and there, but his rib problems caught up to him as Orton was able to nail the RKO and walk out of Philadelphia still holding the North American Title.

Randy Orton pinned Rob Van Dam with the RKO in 0:12:59.
Rating: *** 1/4
(Randy Orton retained the GCW North American Title.)

This match goes to show you how one bad break or false move can change the entire complexion of a contest. You don't have to like the guy or who he runs with, but that was an impressive victory by Randy Orton. The North American Title stays with the Sensationals.

* * * * *

[Kurt Angle and "Y2J" Chris Jericho are both looking at a monitor, watching Randy Orton celebrate his successful title defense. They both smile a bit as they are obviously pleased with what they see.]

KA: That's how the Sensationals get it done. Orton's doing us proud. Your buddy didn't have as much luck though, now did he?

CJ: First of all, Kirk, Justin Credible isn't my buddy, he's my lackey. And second of all, I'm going to have a chat with that assclown. Nobody makes the Ayatollah of Rock 'n' Rollah look bad!

KA: It's all right though. Because tonight is the Sensationals night. Randy is still the North American champion, and in a little while, a real American hero will be the number one contender! Oh it's true!

CJ: Kirk, what was that? Did you say "real American hero?"

KA: Yeah, I did.

CJ: Did you really?

KA: Where you going with this, Chris?

CJ: It's just funny you should say that, because I'm from Canada, not America.

KA: I know this, Chris. What's your point?

CJ: Well for someone who practices the three I's, one of which is intelligence, you thinking you're going to get past the King of Bling-Bling makes you a real life jackass!

KA: We'll just see about that, Chris. I'm focused, I've trained hard for this. There's no way that the number one contender is going to be anyone else but the only Olympic gold medalist in wrestling history. I won a gold medal with a broken...

CJ: Neck... a broken neck, I know, I know. Give it a rest.

KA: No, you give it a rest!

CJ: No, YOU give it a rest!

KA: No, YOU GIVE... you know what? This is going nowhere. As long as we take care of Shawn Michaels and Eddie Guerrero, who cares which one of us it's going to be?

CJ: I do, because it's going to be me, slappy!

[We cut back to the ring as Angle and Jericho continue to argue amongst themselves.]

* * * * *

Match #7
Cruiserweight Title Match
Low-Ki (c) (w/ Daffney) vs. Rey Mysterio Jr.
This match has been brewing for a month as Low-Ki and Triple X screwed Rey Mysterio Jr. out of the Cruiserweight Title Tournament a month ago, and Mysterio was given a chance here tonight to gain a measure of retribution. Between this match and the Cruiserweight Chaos match earlier in the evening, I think it's safe to say that Global Championship Wrestling has one of the most exciting and entertaining cruiserweight divisions in the world. And we knew Teddy Hart had to be watching this match closely as he would be facing the winner of this contest at Super Cade for the Cruiserweight Title.

Mysterio started this match off by doing what he does best, and that's use his incredible speed and agility to get the better of Low-Ki. Low-Ki is a man who when he is focused is very difficult to beat, so getting him off his game early is key. Mysterio was doing just that, as every move Low-Ki tried in the early stages of this match, Mysterio would reverse with an armdrag or headscissors takedown before Low-Ki finally took a powder to the outside, kicking the ringsteps as hard as he could out of frustration. Low-Ki didn't have much time to vent though, as Mysterio jumped on him with a somersault plancha!

The match spilled back inside where Mysterio promptly got Low-Ki set up for the 6-1-9, but when Mysterio went for it, Daffney pulled down he ropes causing Mysterio to fall hard to the floor. This provided the champion with his window of opportunity. Low-Ki went to work on Mysterio with his stiff offense, brutalizing the San Diego native with hard kicks. Low-Ki seemed to have things in his control until late in the contest, Low-Ki went for a Tidal Wave in the corner, but Mysterio moved out of the way and the champion ended up crotching himself on the top rope! Mysterio was quick to the draw, bringing Low-Ki back down into the ring with a springboard huracanrana. Mysterio then hit a ropeflip moonsault which got him a 2 1/2 count. Daffney jumped up on the apron at this point, distracting Mysterio. Mysterio went over to get her off the apron, allowing Low-Ki time to recover and attempt to nail Mysterio from behind, but Rey moved and Low-Ki went crashing into Daffney instead! Rey hit a dropkick on Low-Ki, knocking him throat first onto the second rope. Mysterio had the crowd on its feet now as he hit the far ropes and nailed the champion with the 6-1-9. Seconds later, Mysterio hit the West Coast Pop to get the 1-2-3. We have a new Cruiserweight champion!

Rey Mysterio Jr. pinned Low-Ki with the West Coast Pop in 0:14:31.
Rating: *** 3/4
(Rey Mysterio Jr. won the GCW Cruiserweight Title.)

The crowd was on its feet as referee JD Sanders presented Mysterio with the Cruiserweight Title. The amazing Red, Mysterio's friend and tag team partner, came out and celebrated with him as Philadelphia voiced its approval. Mysterio will have a chance to become a double champion tomorrow night on Explosion when he and Red face the Basham Brothers for the World Tag Team Titles. Congrats to Rey Mysterio Jr. for his big win here tonight.

Match #8
Number-One Contender Match
Kurt Angle vs. "The Heartbreak Kid" Shawn Michaels vs. "Y2J" Chris Jericho vs. "Latino Heat" Eddie Guerrero
Before the match, a video package aired detailing the situation with these four men, who have all been going at it since day one here in GCW. All four of these men believe they should be the number one contender for the World Heavyweight Title, and you can make a solid argument for all of them. This was a very intense match that the crowd was extremely into from bell to bell. We also saw early on how there wouldn't be any alliances in this one, as both Kurt Angle and Chris Jericho, as well as Shawn Michaels and Eddie Guerrero, tandems that are supposed to be friends, went after each other like they were heated rivals.

A good strategy in an elimination match like this is to keep yourself fresh early on, conserving as much energy as possible. Jericho, however, got stuck in the ring for much of the early portions of the match. Because of this, Jericho would end up being the first man eliminated from the match. Jericho was attempting to put the Walls of Jericho on Shawn Michaels, but Michaels kicked off, sending Jericho hard into the turnbuckle. HBK got back to his feet and nailed Jericho with a flying forearm as he stumbled out of the corner. HBK went for the cover, and unbeknowst to referee Antonio Santangelo, Eddie Guerrero was pulling down Jericho's foot on the outside, preventing Jericho from being able to kick out! Guerrero and Jericho absolutely hate each other, so Guerrero is willing to do anything to screw over the self-proclaimed King of the World. Jericho was livid, but regardless, he was out of this match, his chance at being number one contender gone for now.

Even if there were no official teams in this match, and both Michaels and Guerrero earlier saying they wouldn't work together tonight, you could tell Jericho being eliminated made Angle pretty nervous. It was essentially two-on-one for several minutes, but to Angle's credit, he survived. You can say what you want about Kurt Angle, but he's a very intelligent wrestler and knows what he is doing. However, it looked like his luck was about to run out when Eddie Guerrero had him on the ropes, dropping him with a brainbuster. Guerrero then whipped Angle into he ropes and nailed a beautiful standing dropkick to Angle's face. But what Guerrero didn't realize is that Michaels had made a blind tag to Angle as he hit the ropes, making him the legal man. Guerrero went for a cover on Angle but couldn't figure out why referee Santangelo wasn't making the count. Latino Heat stood up to make a protest, but as he stood up, HBK caught him square in the jaw with the Sweet Chin Music! Michaels made the cover and just like that, Eddie Guerrero was eliminated!

That left just Shawn Michaels and Kurt Angle, and it was obvious who the fans in Philadelphia were rooting for. Angle was still recovering from before as a fresh and fired up Michaels went right to work. Angle tried to put some distance between himself and the Heartbreak Kid, but HBK wouldn't let him as he was all over Angle. Michaels called for the Sweet Chin Music as the fans were on their feet, but out from the back ran Randy Orton, Angle's stablemate. Orton grabbed a hold of Michaels' foot, preventing him from moving. Michaels turned and yelled at Orton, even taking a swing at him, but Orton nearly missed it. When Michaels turned around, Angle caught him in a small package. Angle grabbed a handful of tights, and in the blink of an eye had this match won.

Number-One-Contenders-Four Corners Match:
Kurt Angle defeated Chris Jericho, Eddie Guerrero and Shawn Michaels:
x S. Michaels beat Jericho via a flying forearm in 0:08:13
x S. Michaels beat E. Guerrero via the Sweet Chin Music in 0:21:23
x K. Angle beat S. Michaels via a small package in 0:26:30
Rating: *** 3/4

Kurt Angle is the number one contender for the World Heavyweight Title. Shawn Michaels couldn't believe what just happened as an exhausted Angle quickly rolled out of the ring where Randy Orton congratulated him. Shawn Michaels was furious at referee Antonio Santangelo for not seeing the handful of tights as HBK tried to explain to him what happened. And what happened is Shawn Michaels was screwed out of being the number one contender. Whether we like it or not, that man is Kurt Angle.

[We are in the locker room of "The Crippler" Chris Benoit as he is getting himself fired up for his World Heavyweight Title defense. After a few moments of him getting pumped up, the camera switches to Brock Lesnar, who is in his locker room doing the same. Lesnar looks very intense and very focused, leaning his forehead and fists against a locker for a few seconds of calm before he punches the locker and lets out a loud grunt. These two are sure to tear each other apart. This match will truly be fitting to the name "Mayhem."]

Match #9
MAIN EVENT
World Heavyweight Title Match
"The Crippler" Chris Benoit (c) vs. Brock Lesnar
Nobody denies that Chris Benoit is a gamer, someone who will put his all into a match no matter the circumstances, but just based on looking at this match, it seemed like he was outmatched. Benoit has worked many years very hard to get to this position, to be a World Heavyweight champion, but Brock Lesnar is a monster, plain and simple. Lesnar has shown not only is he quite capable in the ring, but also has zero mercy and zero remorse. He's injured people, tried to injure people, and just tore through anyone who's been put in front of him. Now, Lesnar was focused, and he wanted to be the World Heavyweight champion - a very dangerous combination.

The early moments of this match were a pure decimation. Benoit tried to hit and run early on, but Lesnar got a hold of him and wore him down. Nothing too fancy from Lesnar - clotheslines, forearms, kneelifts, and shoulderblocks. They're not very flashy moves, but there is no doubting that when you're as big and menacing as Brock Lesnar, they are effective. Lesnar nailed a huge belly-to-belly suplex that got him a nearfall. Lesnar seemed to have this match well in control until he went for a clothesline, but Benoit ducked under it and put a waistlock on Lesnar, which led to a huge German suplex. This was important because it showed Lesnar that he was in for a fight; Benoit wasn't going to just roll over and die.

Benoit tried working on Lesnar's shoulder and neck, softening him up for the Crippler Crossface. However, Benoit could never get a long string of offense together as the powerful Lesnar always found a way to counter. Lesnar's amateur wrestling background helps him with counter wrestling and it showed here tonight. Despite Benoit's resiliency, it looked as if this night was going to belong to Brock Lesnar when Benoit went for his swandive headbutt only to have Lesnar roll out of the way.

Lesnar got a twisted look on his face as he could smell the blood in the water. A tired and wounded Lesnar got to his feet and called for the end. Lesnar scooped Benoit up in a fireman's carry for the F-5, but before he could execute the move, BOOKER T was in the ring and he kicked Lesnar hard in the midsection, causing Benoit to fall to the ground. Head referee Jimmy Appleseed called for the bell as this great match ended in a disqualification.

Brock Lesnar defeated Chris Benoit by disqualification in 0:17:20.
Rating: *** 1/4
(Chris Benoit retained the GCW World Heavyweight Title.)

Booker T lit Lesnar up with lefts and rights as the crowd cheered him on loudly. Booker T had been on the shelf since April 5th when Lesnar F-5'ed him into the ringpost, and boy was he looking to get some revenge tonight! Booker hit a kick to the gut of Lesnar before bouncing off the ropes and taking him down with the Scissor Kick. Booker mounted Lesnar and started pounding away at him with right hands, busting Lesnar's head wide open. Booker tossed Lesnar over the top to the floor and went out after him as a groggy Lesnar tried to make his way to the back. Booker and Lesnar brawled to the locker room as a confused Benoit looked on. Chris Benoit may have lost the match, but titles cannot change hands on a disqualification, so he remains the World Heavyweight champion. Would Benoit have been able to survive Lesnar's F-5 and keep the title on his own? Who knows, but Benoit sure didn't look too happy that he didn't get the opportunity to find out. Regardless, the show came to an end with Benoit holding up his World Heavyweight Title as Philaldephia cheered him on.

Be sure to join us tomorrow night for Monday Night Explosion as we embark on the road to Super Cade!
