[GCW] Monday Night Explosion - 5/10/04

Snabbit888Posted on 05/15/04 at 19:03:08

We are LIVE in Memphis, Tennessee, and we are LIVE for Monday Night Explosion! Tonight, we have a packed house and a stacked card. Tonight, we will see the Basham Brothers take on the team of Rob Conway and Nick Dinsmore! Chris Jericho of the Sensationals will meet the nephew of his archrival when he takes on Chavo Guerrero Jr.! He's not the only Sensational in action as Kurt Angle goes one-on-one with Lance Storm! And in our main event, Randy Orton will put his North American Title on the line against "The Heartbreak Kid" Shawn Michaels! Let's not waste any more time!

* * * * *

[After the opening to Explosion has completed, the lights come back up and we see "The Innovator of Violence" Tommy Dreamer already standing in the ring, kendo stick in hand.]

TD: I'm going to make this very very simple for everyone. Brock Lesnar! You want to bully people around, attack people from behind? That's fine. You're a big tough guy, Brock; you should be able to beat people up like a man! So why don't you show me how tough you really are? Brock, you might come down here and beat the holy hell out of me, but I'm not living this ring until you bring your back-fighting ass down here so I can kick it!

[The crowd pops huge as Dreamer looks very intense. After a few moments, Brock Lesnar's music kicks in and he slowly makes his way to the ring. Dreamer throws the microphone out of the ring looking to fight. Lesnar slowly crawls in, but he is nailed right away by Dreamer. Referee Petey Pluck slides in the ring and calls for the bell.]

Match #1
"The Innovator of Violence" Tommy Dreamer vs. Brock Lesnar
What a way to kick off Explosion! These two simply beat the crap out of each other. Tommy Dreamer knew that if he wanted any chance at all, he couldn't back down at all, and he most certainly didn't. Dreamer hit Brock Lesnar hard and often, scoring several nearfalls early. But one thing that you can't forget is that Brock Lesnar is Brock Lesnar, and that means he's a scary individual. Dreamer went for the Dreamer DDT a little bit too early as Lesnar effortlessly picked him up out of it and dumped Dreamer over the top rope to the floor. From there, the savage animal in Lesnar kicked in as he devastated Dreamer's back with a variety of slams and bearhugs. Dreamer is a tough guy and can take a beating, still fighting back.

Late in the match, Dreamer caught Lesnar with a foot in the face as Lesnar charged into the corner. Deamer attempted to follow with a clothesline, but Lesnar ducked and Dreamer nailed referee Petey Pluck instead! Dreamer checked on Pluck, but when he turned around, Lesnar was there to hit an overhead belly-to-belly suplex. Lesnar hit a spinebuster on Dreamer, but seeing the ref was still unconscious, Lesnar got a sadistic smile on his face. Lesnar jumped outside the ring and grabbed Dreamer's kendo stick, slamming it against the steps. Lesnar got in the ring and taunted Dreamer. Before Lesnar could use the stick, CHRIS BENOIT was in the ring and had Lesnar in a rear waistlock. The crowd was on its feet as Benoit proceeded to plant Lesnar with a hat trick of German suplexes! Benoit went to the top and hit a swandive headbutt on Lesnar as the fans chanted "BENOIT! BENOIT!" Benoit slid out of the ring as Dreamer made his way back to his feet. Petey Pluck was stirring as Dreamer lifted Lesnar and dropped him with the Dreamer DDT. The crowd counted along as Tommy Dreamer had scored a huge upset!

Tommy Dreamer pinned Brock Lesnar with the Dreamer DDT in 0:08:00.
Rating: ** 3/4

Brock Lesnar rolled out of the ring as Chris Benoit jumped back in the ring and grabbed a microphone from ringside.

* * * * *

[Chris Benoit and Tommy Dreamer stand in the ring as Brock Lesnar is backing up to the locker rooms, holding his head.]

CB: You think you're a bad man, Brock Lesnar? Well I'm a rabid wolverine! Do you think they call me the Crippler for nothing? You want a piece of me, Brock? Mayhem! May 23rd in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, you will get more of me than you can handle! I am the World Heavyweight champion! And Brock Lesnar, if you don't like that, you can try to PROVE ME WRONG!

[Benoit throws the microphone down as you can audibly hear Lesnar yell, "YOU'RE DEAD!" We cut to commercial as Benoit and Lesnar jaw at each other.]

Match #2
"The Whole F'n Show" Rob Van Dam vs. Perry Saturn
Rob Van Dam was in action tonight, taking on a man we haven't seen much of in Global Championship Wrestling, Perry Saturn. Saturn might not have been seen much, but he looked very sharp in the ring tonight. It's just unfortunate for him that his sharp performance came when RVD was on top of his game. Saturn hit most of his signature moves, but in the end, he was outdone by Rob Van Dam. The Whole F'n Show hit the Five Star Frog Splash and notched another victory under his belt.

Rob Van Dam pinned Perry Saturn with the Five Star Frog Splash in 0:09:58.
Rating: ****

Rob Van Dam is rolling now as he looked impressive tonight.

Match #3
"Y2J" Chris Jericho (w/ Justin Credible) vs. Chavo Guerrero Jr.
"Y2J" Chris Jericho was looking to send a message tonight, and unfortunately for Chavo Guerrero Jr., he did. It was painfully obvious from the beginning that Jericho had little on his mind other than making an example out of Chavo. Jericho pretty much dominated Chavo as Chavo couldn't overcome both the skill of Y2J and the interference of Justin Credible. It didn't take long for Jericho to lock on the Walls of Jericho and pick up a dominant submission victory.

Chris Jericho made Chavo Guerrero Jr. submit to the Walls Of Jericho in 0:03:15.
Rating: ** 1/4

After being declared the winner, Chris Jericho refused to release the Walls of Jericho on Chavo. Jericho reared back further as Justin Credible stomped on the back of Chavo's head. Jericho directed Credible to grab a steel chair from ringside, which Credible in perfect lackey fashion did. Jericho released the Walls of Jericho on Chavo and told Credible to bring Chavo to his feet as Jericho took the chair. As Credible held the defenseless Chavo Guerrero Jr. up, Jericho reared back and clocked him in the head with the chair, which hit with a sickening thud. Jericho set the chair on the mat and told Credible, "Take care of him." Credible grabbed Chavo and spiked him on the chair with the That's Incredible! Luckily before anything else could happen, EDDIE GUERRERO sprinted to the ring with reckless abandon. Jericho wanted n part of this, as he shoved Justin Credible into Eddie and jumped out of the ring. Eddie fired Credible up with lefts and rights as Credible tried to block the blows with little success. Latino Heat grabbed the chair that had been used on his nephew just moments before and blasted Credible in the back with it, sending him through the ropes and to the floor. Eddie went to check on Chavo as medical personnel made their way to the ring and put Chavo on a stretcher. Things don't look good for Chavo right now.

* * * * *

[We are backstage as the EMTs are wheeling Chavo Guerrero Jr. on a stretcher toward an ambulance, Eddie Guerrero at his side. Shawn Michaels and Rob Van Dam enter and start trying to calm Eddie down.]

HBK: Eddie! EDDIE! Where are you going?

EG: He messed with my familia! NO ONE messes with my familia!

RVD: Chill out, dude!

EG: Chill out?! CHILL OUT! I will not chill out!

HBK: Can't you see they're doing this on purpose? Divide and conquer, Eddie!

EG: Get out of the way, holmes!

[Guerrero shoves Michaels and Van Dam out of the way and climbs in the ambulance with Chavo. The EMTs shut the doors as the ambulance pulls away.]

HBK: Looks like we're doing this alone tonight, Rob.

RVD: Yeah, dude... bummer.

[Shawn Michaels and Rob Van Dam watch the ambulance speed away.]

Match #4
"Ironman" Rob Conway/Nick Dinsmore vs. The Basham Brothers (w/ Shaniqua)
The two teams who will challenge the World's Greatest Tag Team at Mayhem for the World Tag Team Titles met in a match tonight as Rob Conway and Nick Dinsmore squared off with the Basham Brothers. A very solid tag team match as these teams have certainly honed the tag team craft, and all four are very familiar with each other. Both teams knew that a victory here would give them a lot of momentum going into Mayhem. Shaniqua knew this as well and didn't want to see one of her men get pinned as she jumped in the ring while Dinsmore had Doug Basham in a pinning predicament with the German Suplex, and nailed him in the stomach with the riding crop, resulting in an immediate disqualification.

Rob Conway and Nick Dinsmore defeated The Basham Brothers (Doug Basham and Danny Basham) when N. Dinsmore defeated Doug Basham by disqualification in 0:08:20.
Rating: *** 1/4

Rob Conway jumped in the ring as the Bashams had intended to double team Nick Dinsmore, causing the Bashams to jump out of the ring. Nick Dinsmore was holding his ribs as Shaniqua caught him good with that riding crop. The Bashams might not have gotten the win tonight, but they may have softened Dinsmore's ribs up.

Match #5
Goldust vs. Justin Credible
The fans were all over Justin Credible after his part in the heinous attack on Chavo Guerrero Jr. earlier in the night. Credible went up against a man who is quickly becoming one of the most popular wrestlers in GCW, Goldust. It was good to see that Goldust had no lasting injuries from his brutal match with Brock Lesnar last week, as he looked very sharp in this hotly contested matchup. Credible tried everything he could to put the big Texan down, but in the end, Goldust ducked a superkick attempt from Credible and followed up with the Shock Treatment to get the 1-2-3.

Goldust pinned Justin Credible with the Shock Treatment in 0:10:33.
Rating: ***

An impressive victory for Goldust, and the crowd loved see Justin Credible get what was coming to him. Goldust looks to have a bright future here in Global Championship Wrestling.

* * * * *

[The camera cuts to the back where we see a locker room door that says "DIAMOND DALLAS PAGE" on it. Hardcore Holly is outside the door with his smug smirk on his face. He bursts into the door where we see Kimberly giving DDP a shoulder rub.]

DDP: May I help you?

HH: I'm just here to chat, Dallas. See how you're adjusting to being back on the road again.

DDP: It's been a rougher transition than I thought, but I'm getting there, I'm getting there.

HH: Man, for someone who hasn't even gotten a win yet, you have your own nice locker room here! Impressive!

DDP: What are you hinting at, Bob?

HH: Oh, nothing, Page, nothing at all. It just seems interesting that your "stellar" comeback isn't turning out so stellar, that's all!

DDP: Maybe not, but I've still done more in this business than you ever will... Sparky.

[The crowd oohs as Hardcore Holly is fuming now about DDP's reference to Holly's previous goofy gimmick. Holly gets right in Page's face.]

HH: You better watch what you say to me, Page. Keep in mind, I'm the Big Shot around here!

DDP: Whatever, Bob. Are we done here now? I've got things to do.

HH: I wouldn't consider that whore [Indicating Kimberly] something to do, but...

[DDP clocks Hardcore Holly with a right hand as Kimberly screams. DDP punishes Holly with several hard right hands until the GCW Official Brigade ran in and separated the two.]

Match #6
Kurt Angle vs. Lance Storm
On paper, this match between Kurt Angle and Lance Storm looked very one-sided. Lance Storm is an accomplished athlete and a wonderful technical wrestler, but he simply hasn't had near the success that Kurt Angle has. But matches don't get decided on paper; they get decided in the ring, and Lance Storm always brings his A-game. It appeared early on as if Angle thought he had himself an easy victory here tonight and he could phone it in, but in the opening couple of minutes when Lance Storm was out wrestling him, he realized he was in for a fight. Lance Storm solidified this by catching Angle with a superkick at the 4 minute mark that got a 2 and a half and caused Angle to bail to the floor for a breather. Storm stayed right on top of Angle though, jumping on him with a plancha.

As this match progressed, the crowd started sensing that they may be witness to a huge upset tonight with the way this match was going. Angle would get his shots in, but he couldn't establish any sort of rhythm as the Calgary native had an answer for everything the former Olympic champion tried. Angle was able to sway the momentum when he caught Storm on the top rope with a super armdrag. After that, Angle wisely went to work on Storm's leg, obviously as a setup for the Ankle Lock. After working Storm's leg over, Angle did lock on that dreadfully painful Ankle Lock Lance Storm was writhing in pain when suddenly "The Heartbreak Kid" Shawn Michaels ran down to ringside! Angle spotted Michaels as he was outside the ring and released the Ankle Lock on Storm and started jawing with Michaels. As Angle had his attention elsewhere, Lance Storm limped back to his feet. HBK saw Lance Storm was back to his feet and pointed for Angle to turn around. Angle spun around, only for Storm to bring him down with a rana. Storm hooked Angle's legs and picked up a huge upset victory!

Lance Storm pinned Kurt Angle after a rana in 0:14:48.
Rating: *** 1/4

Lance Storm jumped out of the ring quickly as Memphis was on its feet! HBK congratulated an elated Lance Storm on the outside as Angle was going nuts in the center of the ring. I guess Shawn Michaels figured that with Eddie Guerrero no longer in the building that he had to strike first. Well, he struck first in a big, big way.

* * * * *

[Backstage in the locker room of the Sensationals, Kurt Angle is absolutely throwing a fit. Chris Jericho, Randy Orton, and to a lesser extent, Justin Credible, are trying to calm him down.]

KA: Shawn Michaels wants to get in my business!?

[Angle picks up a chair and throws it at a locker, narrowly missing Credible's skull.]

KA: That son of a bitch! I lost to Lance freakin' Storm!?

CJ: Just calm down, Kirk! We'll take care of this!

RO: You're damn right we will. You don't mess with the Sensationals and get away with it. I'll make Michaels pay tonight. This North American Title isn't going anywhere!

KA: You're damn right Michaels is going to pay! Nobody embarrasses Kurt Angle and gets away with it. It's true... it's damn true!

Match #7
Non-Title Match
The World's Greatest Tag Team vs. The Hurricane/Teddy Hart
We had ourselves a nifty little tag match as the team of The Hurricane and Teddy Hart took on the World Tag Team champion World's Greatest Tag Team in non-title action. When you get to fight the champions in a non-title match, you have absolutely nothing to lose, and The Hurricane and Teddy Hart wrestled accordingly. The Hurricane and Hart took a lot of risks, many of them paying off. The Hurricane took one too many chances, however, and after missing a flying crossbody, Charlie Haas locked him in the Haas of Pain, causing masked crusader to submit.

The World's Greatest Tag Team (Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin) defeated Teddy Hart and The Hurricane when C. Haas made Hurricane submit to the Haas Of Pain in 0:10:40.
Rating: ***

At this point, Shaniqua came down to the ring and started talking with Shelton Benjamin, keeping him occupied on the floor. While Benjamin was distracted, the Basham Brothers came in and start putting a beating on Charlie Haas. Doug and Danny Basham pounded on Haas, completely unbeknowst to Shelton Benjamin who was outside talking to Shaniqua! The Bashams locked Haas in a double Boston crab and reared back until Benjamin finally saw what was going on. Benjamin came in and nailed Danny Basham with a forearm breaking up the Boston crab. As Benjamin punched away at Danny, Doug Basham caught Benjamin from behind with the Basham Blaster. The Bashams stomped on Benjamin until Shaniqua jumped in and pulled them away. Shaniqua whipped both the Bashams with the riding crop, reprimanding both of them. Shaniqua smacked both the Bashams and demanded they head to the back, which they obliged in doing. We cut backstage as the World Tag Team champions tried to regroup.

* * * * *

[Shaniqua is seen backstage scolding both Danny and Doug Basham.]

S: What did I tell you!? WHAT DID I TELL YOU!?

[Shaniqua whips both Doug and Danny hard across the back. They both wince in pain.]

S: I said don't hurt Shelton! And what did you do? YOU HURT SHELTON!

[Shaniqua whips both Bashams hard yet again.]

S: I told you if you hurt my precious Shelton, you would be punished! And you better believe you're going to be punished! Let's go!

[Shaniqua pushes the Bashams off camera. Cut back to the ring.]

Match #8
Rey Mysterio Jr./The Amazing Red/Billy Kidman/Paul London vs. Christopher Daniels/Elix Skipper/Low-Ki (Cruiserweight Champion)/AJ Styles (Television Champion)
Before we got to our main event, we had a fast-paced 8-man tag team match. This was exciting for the crowd, but there was little to no psychology or flow to this match. With so many people involved, it just became who could hit the biggest move next. It was still important to each team to win though, because with Rey Mysterio Jr. challenging Low-Ki for the Cruiserweight Title and Red taking on AJ Styles for the Television Title at Mayhem, a lot of momentum could be picked up in this one. And that momentum will go to Rey Mysterio Jr., who got the pinfall for his team with a picture-perfect ropeflip moonsault on Elix Skipper.

Billy Kidman, Paul London, Red and Rey Mysterio Jr. defeated Triple X (Christopher Daniels, Elix Skipper and Low-Ki) and AJ Styles when Mysterio Jr. pinned Skipper after a ropeflip moonsault in 0:09:06.
Rating: *** 1/4

Match #9
MAIN EVENT
North American Title Match
Randy Orton (c) vs. "The Heartbreak Kid" Shawn Michaels
We knew this was going to be a heated main event after everything that's taken place tonight. Between Chris Jericho and Justin Credible heinously attacking Chavo Guerrero Jr. and putting him in the hospital resulting in Eddie Guerrero leaving with his nephew, and Shawn Michaels earlier distracting Kurt Angle allowing Lance Storm to get an upset victory, there was a lot of tension in the arena. We knew that something was going to go down, and it most certainly did as Randy Orton defended the North American Title against Shawn Michaels.

This match itself was an excellent encounter. A lot of drama for the match at both of these men are at the top of their games: the young upstart Orton who thinks he's unbeatable against the old veteran who knows every trick in the book. Orton and HBK worked the crowd up into a frenzy and by the end, the fans were on their feet wanting desperately for the Heartbreak Kid to take home the gold. However, the Sensationals had other things in mind. Chris Jericho making Justin Credible his official lackey is already paying dividends, as he served as the catalyst for what went down. Shawn Michaels had just hit a flying elbowdrop on Orton and went for the pin, but Credible grabbed referee Jimmy Appleseed's foot and pulled him outside of the ring. While Appleseed did his best to get Credible out of there, the Sensationals struck. Frist, Chris Jericho jumped in the ring and went after HBK, but HBK blocked a right hand and chopped away at Y2J, knocking him out of the ring. However, he failed to notice that Kurt Angle had slid into the ring until Angle had HBK and dropped him with the Angle Slam. Angle grabbed Orton and put him on top of Michaels for the cover. Credible emphatically instructed Appleseed to get back in the ring to make the count. Appleseed's hand crashed to the mat 3 times as the Sensationals had successfully screwed Michaels.

Randy Orton pinned Shawn Michaels after outside interference in 0:10:44.
Rating: **** 1/4

Shawn Michaels losing the match wasn't enough for Kurt Angle though, who jumped back in the ring and locked the Heartbreak Kid in the Ankle Lock! HBK screamed in pain as Jericho nailed Jimmy Appleseed with a right hand and tossed him over the top rope, which is sure to garner a fine from GCW. Things looked bad for Michaels until ROB VAN DAM sprinted down to the ring to help out, but the numbers were too great for him as he was quickly overwhelmed. The Sensationals continued their 4-on-2 attack as things looked very bleak. LANCE STORM made a surprising run to the ring, trying to repay his debt to Shawn Michaels, but after a quick flurry, succumbed to the odds like HBK and RVD had. At this point the crowd absolutely blew the roof off the building as we heard, "YOU WANT SOME LATINO HEAT?" over the PA and out from the back came an extremely fired up EDDIE GUERRERO! Guerrero was the proverbial house of fire as he absolutely unleashed on all of the Sensationals. Justin Credible started by charging Eddie, but Latino Heat ducked and backdropped Credible to the floor. Orton took a swing at Eddie with the North Amrican Title, but Eddie ducked and caught Orton with a kick to the midsection, resulting in him dropping the title to the canvas. Guerrero picked it up and clocked Orton with it, sending him through the ropes! Angle nailed Guerrero from behind with a forearm and went for a German suplex, but Eddie countered it with an armdrag takedown. When Angle stumbled back to his feet, Latino Heat nailed him with a dropkick and out of the ring he went! That just left Chris Jericho who Guerrero took down with a Thesz press and rattled off right hand after right hand as the Memphis crowd was loving every minute of it. Guerrero hooked Jericho up and took his down with a hat trick of rolling suplexes. Guerrero went to the top rope and called for the Frog Splash, but Justin Credible reached into the ring and grabbed Jericho's foot, pulling him to the outside, much to the disapproval of the rabid fans. The show came to a close with an animated Eddie Guerrero demanding that Chris Jericho come back to the ring.

Tommy Dreamer signed his death warrant. Interesting there was no REAL opening interview. Can't wait to see Michaels vs Orton.

You put Dreamer over Lesnar!!! MAN!!! Didn't see that coming at all. I don't mind the Dreamer push, but he is so going to be destroyed later by Lesnar. I'd almost bet money on it.

Benoit is sounding pretty scary there. A Lesnar-Benoit match would be awesome, but I'd save it.

Apparently you weren't too upset with RVD being late since you had him go over Saturn. Should have had him had a discipline job.

That was a good use of Chavo. I'm being serious. I'm surprised it took Eddie so long to get out there. If my arch-rival was fighting my nephew I'd be watching a bit more closely. Anyways, this really helps the build-up of their feud.

Familia? Don't try and overdo it. :)

Well, I'm trying to decide if my hatred of the Bashams is "Stop using them." or good heel heat.

Good win for Goldust. Maybe he can fight Orton or something.

Not a very good reason for a feud between DDP and Holly, but I guess you had to find something for them. Maybe it'll grow into something.

Man! You're all about the upsets tonight! Not that it's a bad thing. You're starting to do a good job of elevating some of your other talent.

Is there any specific reason why you edit the cussing? Or is it part of the boards? Kind of annoying.

I don't see Hart and Hurricane having a good future together. I'd like to see Hart going into singles sometime soon.

Yeah, Shaniqua really does scare me. I really hope Shelton doesn't fall for her "charm."

Good to see Orton go over Michaels. Seems like a lot of the wrestlers have a chance of beating anybody at any time. I like that.

Great end to the card. It really gave Guerrero some momentum. Once again, you are building the four guys up pretty well leading into their match at Mayhem.

I'm still dissapointed that you decided to use Benoit vs Lesnar so early. Lesnar vs. the Champ should have been saved for awhile, IMO.
