LIW Rage in a Cage - 10/20/06

Critic of the DawnPosted on 08/20/05 at 21:03:49

Coming into this show, I thought that this was a strong card.  And really, it turned out fairly well.  Certainly things did not turn out the way I had expected, but really I do like the way things unfolded.  It makes sense to me after a bit of thought.  The one thing I would change about this card, however, would be to reduce the amount of interference.  Looking back, it seems like it was a bit excessive to me.  We'll see how it looks when laid out here.

Vampiro and Edge defeated
International Thug Syndicate (Shane Douglas and Too Cold Scorpio) when Edge
pinned Douglas with the Spear in 0:16:47.
Rating: *** 1/4

Our huge doubleshot weekend opened up with a bang in New Haven as Edge and Vampiro took on the leader of the International Thug Syndicate and his advisor.  This was every bit the hard hitting match that we had expected coming into this weekend, and the contrasting styles of all involved really worked well together.  Several times it looked as if the Syndicate had Vampiro & Edge - for example, Edge went for a Spear early in the match, but he ended up with a painful shoulder full of ringpost.  The match might have ended right there, but Vampiro's martial arts skills managed to turn the tide.  Out of everyone in this match, Shane Douglas looked the most out of place - clearly he's past his prime as an in-ring competitor.  The strategies that he gave to Scorpio while he was outside the ring proved very valuable, but in the end Douglas' own weakness cost him the match.  After an extended brawl, a still-sore Edge managed to score with a bodyslam, then connect with a HUGE Spear as Douglas got back to his feet for the pinfall victory!

[Erik Watts interfered against Aviv Maayan.]

Perry Saturn was given this match ostensibly to prepare himself to face Paul London sometime in the future.  Coming into this match, it was abundantly clear that he wasn't interested in preparing so much as making an example of poor Aviv Maayan.  Saturn tossed Maayan around the ring with ease, then scored with his devestating Frog Splash for a nearfall.  Maayan bravely battled back, even in the face of interference by Erik Watts, but all he got for his trouble was a superkick to the face and a NASTY Death Valley Driver.  Even though Maayan landed in the ropes, Watts managed to shove his lifeless foot back into the ring before the referee saw it, giving Saturn an easy win.  "This is you when next we meet, London!" shouts Saturn.

Wait!  "Battle Without Honor or Humanity" hits, and London rushes the ring with a steel chair, sending Watts & Saturn scattering like vultures as London helps Maayan to the back.

[Frank Shamrock interfered against Ron Harris.]

This match didn't even have a chance to get seriously underway.  After exchanging a few blows with the massive Ron Harris, Ernest Miller gestured to the back.  Ron turned to see what was happening, and was promptly dumped over the top rope... only to be met by a furious Frank Shamrock!  Scoring with a takeover suplex which sent Harris headfirst into the barricade, Shamrock taunts Harris, telling him that his victory last month was nothing more than a fluke, and that he's a fool for trying to take the New York State Tag Team Titles from The Usurpers tonight.  As Shamrock laughs and turns to leave, the bell rings, giving an unlikely countout victory to Miller... who launches into a celebratory dance to a chorus of boos from the crowd.

[Lady Victoria interfered against Paul London.]

Not a clean win, perhaps, but a win nonetheless, and because of some interference by Lady Victoria, Paul London has officially won Bracket A of the Best of the Best Series, going undefeated against Ernest Miller, Batista and Edward Chastain!  Chastain looks confused that he lost without being pinned, and just as he is about to corner Paul London for some post-match mauling, Lady Victoria grabs his arm and shouts that he needs to conserve his strength for the tag team title defense later tonight.  Chastain doesn't care, though!  He just shoves her aside and is off after London, who is literally running for his life from this crazed monster!

London leaps the barricade and flees, and Chastain is just about to plow right through it, when Lady Victoria grabs a house mic and shouts "Wait!  Edward!  We have cookies!"  Chastain seemingly stops on a dime, wheels about, and moves in a direct beeline for the catering area, allowing London to escape without further trouble.

(We go backstage now, where Masato Tanaka can be seen speaking Japanese into a
celphone.  As he talks, Sean Waltman steps into view and begins to speak in a
sarcastic mock-Japanese accent.)

Sean Waltman: Ahhh sooooo!  Tanaka-san!

(Masato Tanaka ignores Waltman and continues talking, but Waltman, the asshole
that he is, continues to bother Tanaka.)

Sean Waltman: Where your tag team partner, Tanaka-san?  You talking to him on
the telephone?

(Again, Tanaka ignores him and continues speaking on the phone.  Growing
annoyed that Tanaka isn't annoyed, Waltman snatches the phone away from
Tanaka and shouts into it.)

Sean Waltman: Ahhhh sooo!  My name Masato Tanaka!  Me rikey flied lice!  Moo
goo guy pan!  Wonton soup!  I take a numbah seven!

(Tanaka snatches back his phone and glares.  Waltman adopts the crane stance
from the Karate Kid movies.)

Sean Waltman: Waaaaaaaaaaaaah!  I see that got your attention!  Now beware, for
my kung fu is strong, glasshoppel!

(Tanaka stares at Waltman, then at his phone, then back at Waltman... and
promptly knocks Waltman on his ass with a stiff forearm.)

Masato Tanaka: That was my mother, asshole!  I'll see you in the ring.

(Waltman rubs his chin as Tanaka stalks out of the room.)

Sean Waltman: Man... the guy just can't take a joke...

Ouch!  Waltman goes down in what has to literally be the shortest match time possible according to the Long Island Wrestling rulebook.  Tanaka didn't even wait for Waltman's music to finish - he simply charged him with another stiff forearm shot as soon as he stepped through the ropes and pinned him as the opening bell sounded.  Three seconds later and Waltman had officially set a new record for the fastest defeat ever.

Erik Watts pinned Lance Storm after a DDT in 0:07:34.
Rating: ** 1/2

This was a very competitive match, with both Lance Storm and Erik Watts pulling out all the stops in an attempt to get the advantage.  In the early going, Storm's technical prowess baffled Watts, keeping him on the ropes as Storm countered seemingly every attempt at a power move with a roll up of some kind.  Frustrated, Watts shoved Storm into the referee, then cinched in an Abdominal Stretch before Storm could recover.  This proved to be enough to turn the momentum, and powerslams and suplexes followed.  Stunned, Storm tried to recapture his momentum with a Northern Lights suplex, a move that has proven very dangerous here in LIW to this point.  Watts powered out, however, and drove Storm's head into the mat with a DDT for the win before Storm could recover.  With this win, Erik Watts has swept Bracket B of the Best of the Best series.

(Senior referee Ted Blandford makes his way to the ring with a microphone.)

Ted Blandford: Ladies and gentlemen, it gives me great pleasure to announce to
you all tonight... the WINNERS of the two brackets in the Best of the Best
series!  In Bracket A... holding victories over Ernest "The Cat" Miller, "The
Animal" Batista, and "The Monster" Edward Chastain and going undefeated... Paul
London!

("Battle Without Honor or Humanity" hits, but London has already left the
building to avoid being killed by Chastain.  After a moment, Blandford shrugs.)

Ted Blandford: And in Bracket B... being managed by "The Manager of Champions"
MsChif, with victories over Solo Snuka, Vampiro, and Lance Storm...  I give you
Erik Watts!

("Brain Stew" by Green Day hits, and Erik Watts re-emerges with MsChif and
Perry Saturn)

Erik Watts: Thank you.  Let me just say-

(MsChif cuts him off and takes the microphone.)

MsChif: What my client is trying to say is that he is once again proving to all
of you that he is as good as I say he is!  Not only is he a former - and future-
New York State Heavyweight Champion, but he's now to be acknowledged as The
Best of the Best!  And don't you forget it!

(Ted Blandford waits for MsChif's tirade to end, then speaks.)

Ted Blandford: I'm sorry Ms... MsChif.  But you are incorrect.  Erik Watts has
not yet been confirmed as the winner of the Best of the Best series.  As I was
about to announce, Watts will be facing off against Paul London to see who
earns that honor sometime in November.  Since both men are undefeated in their
respective brackets-

MsChif: That means that when Erik Watts crushes Paul London in front of all of
you, there will be NOBODY who can deny that he truly IS the Best of the Best!

(Erik Watts nods and reaches for the microphone, but MsChif swats his hand
away.)

MsChif: This interview is finished.  C'mon boys.  We're leaving.

(This prompts more cheers than MsChif had expected, and she and her clients
jaw with several fans on their way out.)

It's clear that The Usurpers are not happy about the recent acts of resistence shown by Ron Harris and company.  Frank Shamrock already got some revenge against Ron earlier tonight by causing an embarassing defeat at the hands of Ernest Miller, but when his opponent was revealed as Ron's twin brother Don, Shamrock got a truly twisted smile.  Harris exploded out of the gate in this match, knocking Shamrock down and shaking him around like a ragdoll with a bearhug.  The Usurpers quickly made their way to ringside, however, and after taking Heavy D down with a leglock, Shamrock finished him off easily with a cast iron frying pan passed to him by Chris Sabin!  Don Harris is down and bleeding and Frank Shamrock is loving it!

Wait!  Here comes Arn Anderson and Ron Harris for the save!  Shamrock bails, but Sabin and Chastain begin brawling with them!  Somebody ring the bell!

(The Usurpers retained the New York State Tag Team Titles.)
[Lady Victoria interfered against Ron Harris.]

Once again, Ron Harris delivers a stunning match, this time against Chris Sabin and Edward Chastain with New York State Heavyweight Champion "The Enforcer" Arn Anderson by his side.  Anderson was removed from this match fairly early by a quick Future Shock from Sabin on the outside, which left "Violent R" Ron Harris to face off alone against two of LIW's most dangerous men.  And, to his credit, he did a hell of a job.  In the end, however, the numbers game proved to be too much for him, and the second Ground Zero Splash he took was enough to keep him down for the count.  Thus, The Usurpers retain the tag team titles against two of the most dangerous men in Long Island Wrestling!

[Mark Jindrak interfered against Cactus Jack.]

Cactus Jack defeated El Mephisto here in this match without much trouble.  The only rough spot came as an anxious Mark Jindrak emerged from the locker-room about halfway through the match and slowly walked around the outside of the ring, perhaps planning his strategy against Randy Orton tonight.  The referee was momentarily distracted in shooing him from ringside, but in the end this didn't change the result at all.  Cactus Jack scored with his Double Arm DDT and easily won this match.

(After his brief match against El Mephisto, Cactus Jack grabs a microphone.)

Cactus Jack: ...That was it?  I came here expecting competition, and all I got
was a demon-wannabe in his PJs?  I know I've lost a few high profile matches,
and I know that I've said that I plan on fighting my way back up the ladder...
but this...  Opponents like this are quite frankly pathetic!  It's been long
enough!  I want a high profile match, and I want it tomorrow night!  Give me
something more than a tag team wrestler to crush!  Give me a top name... give
me a rising star... give me a challenge!  The rage that fuels me... that drove
me to each of my three World Title reigns in the WWF... it can't burn without
fuel of its own.  And without that anger...  Without that fire...  I'm just a
man.  I've kept my rage bottled up for so long, trying to be a normal man like
any other, pursuing my career as an author, a father, and a husband...  I NEED
this competition!  I need this to feel alive!  And fighting... THIS...  That
takes that away from me!  So tomorrow...  Give me a real challenge.  Or so
help me God, I will find one on my own!  BANG BANG!

Justin Credible had to cancel his committments with LIW this weekend due to a death in the family, so International Thug Syndicate leader Too Cold Scorpio pulled double duty tonight and teamed up with Ricky Reyes to take on the dangerous duo known as The Future.  Perhaps it is the fact that they are finally in a straight tag team match, but The Future really hit their stride in this match, dominating the Syndicate like you would not believe.  Granted, Scorpio was already a bit beaten up coming into this match, but both Beckett and Xavier manhandled Reyes like we have never seen before!  After just 8 minutes, Chance Beckett was able to hit his Chance Encounter on Reyes and end the match with a strong win for The Future!

Simon Diamond won a hard fought Triangle match by submission tonight, but it was not without a cost.  By the time the match had ended, Simon Diamond's shoulder was quite obviously disabled.  That he was able to not only gut it out to the end of the match but even to win speaks volumes of his skill and dedication, to say nothing of his tolerance for pain.

This was it!  The final confrontation between Randy Orton and Mark Jindrak inside a Steel Cage!  Jindrak was looking for revenge, while Orton had been looking for a way out of this confrontation for months.  Still, with his back to the wall, Orton fought like the cornered rat that he was, going hold for hold with The Ironman in an exchange that had the crowd on their feet for a solid half hour.  In the end, however, Orton has the kind of big match experience that Jindrak lacks, and this was enough to deliver him the victory, much to the dismay of the fans.  As Jindrak finally collapsed, out cold after several RKOs and more, Orton triumphantly pinned him and staggered out of the cage.  Gasping for breath, Orton grabbed a microphone.

"That's it...  We're through 'Ironman!'  Just like every other legend I've faced, you've fallen before me.  And now I'm done with you.  The next time we face each other... IF we ever face each other...  The New York State Heavyweight Title will be on the line.  Because without that...  I see no reason to bother with you again."

"You see, you are beneath me, Jindrak!  You could never cut it in WCW, you could never cut it in WWE, and now you've failed in front of all your fans!  Face it...  You're not bad, but you're nowhere near my league.  Enjoy your nap, Jindrak.  I hope your dreams are pleasant.  Because I've done just what I said I'd do so long ago at the beginning of the year.  I killed your legend before it even began!"

The crowd is nearly rioting as Orton heads smugly back to the locker room and the show ends.

Nice victory for Edge & Vampiro.  I think we may be looking at the future of the LIW tag division.

I don't think Saturn really needed the assist from Watts.  Even with Aviv's foot on the rope I can't imagine he would've lasted very much longer.  Saturn/London will be a war.

Wow, Shamrock killed Harris.  Not an easy thing to do.

Well, London/Saturn will be a war if London doesn't get squished under Chastain.  Lucky for London he didn't.  Maybe Chastain should take on the nickname "The Cookie Monster" :)

Me rikey flied lice
That's horrible :D I just about spit pop at the screen from laughing.  Eric, you are the king.

Tanak vs. Waltman = Best match ever.  Nobody messes with Tanaka's mama! :)

I was rootin' for Storm cause I likes me some Lance Storm, but I guess Watt's benefit's more, seeing as how he swept his bracket.

Frank really fried Don's eggs, didn't he.  Really... sizzled his bacon.  Sorry, I'll stop.  Both Harris' go down at the hands of Shamrock.  He means teh business.

BIG main event.  I was hoping for Jindrak to go over cause in LIW you've made me huge on Jindrak, but I guess deep down I knew Orton would win.  At least Jindrak didn't get his neck broken again :)

Good stuff:)

Vampiro and Edge with a big win, and I'm glad.  I like Scorpio, but I *HATE* Shane Douglas.  Hate him hate him hate him.

No surprise on Saturn beating Maayan with ease.  The Erik Watts interference seemed... unnecessary, but 'tis the nature of unbooked sometimes.

Fuckin' Frank Shamrock...

Chastain is soooo good at losing by DQ.  And boy that fat boy loves cookies.

I desperately want to see Waltman get knocked out all the time.  Hopefully Tanaka crushes him.

And he loses in 3 seconds!  Yes!  Best match ever.

Erik Watts wins a lot in LIW.  I sincerely hope Paul London destroys him though.

Even if it was a screwjob ending, fuckin' Frank Shamrock...

Didn't expect Sabin and Chastain to retain the titles, but they managed to beat Anderson and Ron Harris, clean no less.  Impressive.

Cactus wins easily which is no surprise.  However, Jindrak was just wandering around, hanging out at ringside?  O... k...

Ah, you love the Future, don't you?  A good win... they should sit atop your tag division, IMO.

Wow... you really do love the future... between the tag team, Kazarian, and Sabin, you're all set. :)  Ballsy win for Diamond though.  Dislocated shouler and he still fought through to beat Jonny Storm.  Then again, everyone beats Jonny Storm in LIW. :)

Great main event, and after Jindrak finally gets his shot at Orton one-on-one, Orton pulls out the huge win.  Great main event to end a solid show.
