LIW Summer Storms II - 8/19/06

Critic of the DawnPosted on 06/15/05 at 03:21:48

Woo!  Got this done just in time to get it up before tomorrow's Roll Call of Champions update.  Speaking of which, if you haven't posted your champions, please do so before tomorrow (cheap plug!).  In the mean time, enjoy Summer Storms II.  I certainly did, although there were a few too many schmozz finishes for my tastes.  Then again, I AM a Ring of Honor fan...

Rating: ****

What a match to open a show!  The crowd came positively unglued for this fastpaced exchange between the experienced technical master Lance Storm and the young powerful high flier Solo Snuka.  Things looked like Snuka was going to gain the victory when Storm missed a dive to the outside and consequently fell victim to the Superfly Splash, but Storm somehow got out of it.  A superkick that followed set Snuka up for the Straightshooter, but Snuka powered his own way out of the dangerous hold.  Between the superkick and the submission hold, however, the damage was done, and several minutes later Snuka was pinned after a stiff back suplex jarred his head once again.

Rating: ** 1/4

Both men came into this match with something to prove.  Jonny Storm has been confounded by The Usurpers, and has been just barely keeping his record positive since the death of New Europe.  Batista just suffered an embarassing defeat at the hands of Ernest Miller last week in the first match in the Best of the Best Series.  This match started off quickly, with Jonny Storm using his speed and unorthodox style to throw Batista off his game.  Batista was sent reeling time and time again, but when he finally caught Jonny Storm there was hell to pay.  Batista hung up Storm on the ropes, then scored with a massive Spinebuster Slam as Jonny Storm staggered off of them for a dominating victory!

(James Brown's "Paid the Cost to be the Boss" hits, and The Grandmasters of
Funk strut their way to the ring as the crowd loudly boos them.)

Lamont: Ladies and gentlemen, it's TIME once AGAIN to welcome Ernest "The Cat"
Miller and Johnny B. Badd!  The two hardest working men in sports entertainment
are here for your enjoyment TONIGHT!

(The crowd boos loudly, cringing at the thought of an upcoming dance.)

Lamont: Now I know you all came to see The Cat and Johnny dance, but that isn't
gonna happen tonight.  Oh no!

(Deafening cheers fill the ring, causing Miller and Lamont to scowl and shout
at the crowd as Badd takes the microphone.)

Johnny B. Badd: So if you're wondering why we're here... it's to say this: The
Grandmasters of Funk should be in tonight's Elimination Match to determine the
New York State Tag Team Champions!  Just last week The Cat defeated none other
than Batista in the first ever Best of the Best Series match.  And I dealt
"Superfly" Jimmy Snuka his first defeat.  But instead, the booking committee
chose not only not to grant our title petition... but to make The Cat face "The
Monster" Edward Chastain instead!  EDWARD CHASTAIN!  Do you know what he's
going to do to The Cat?

(The crowd pops in anticipation of finding out.)

Johnny B. Badd: He's going to EAT him!  Hell, what do you think happened to
Stevie Knight?  Just a snack for The Monster.  That's why I'm out here begging
the booking committee... please.  Change the match.  Give us what we deserve!

(After several seconds, "You're The Best Around" from the Karate Kid soundtrack
hits and Frankie Kazarian dashes out.  He and Johnny B. Badd begin to brawl,
and the bell sounds as an impromptu match begins.)

[Ernest Miller interfered against Frankie Kazarian.]

Frankie Kazarian is much younger than Johnny B. Badd, but while this lends Kazarian extra speed, it also grants Badd the experience he needs to counter it.  These two advantages ended up largely cancelling each other out, resulting in a very even match.  Badd managed to score with his devestating Badd Mood on the outside fairly early into the match, but when he rolled Kazarian back into the ring to capitalize, Frankie Kazarian countered with a huge power bomb from the top rope.  This turned the tides, allowing Frankie to rule the rest of the match until Miller suddenly whacked him in the back with a chair.  Frankie staggered across the ring, and was quickly set up for the Badd Mood and finished off by Johnny B. Badd!  Another cheap victory for The Grandmasters of Funk!

Edward Chastain simply crushed Ernest "The Cat" Miller in this match, overpowering him in every exchange and shrugging off almost every attack that Miller tried.  He even pulled Miller's shoulder up after an early Ground Zero Splash.  Now, people underestimating The Cat has backfired on them in the past, but in this case when Miller DID bust out his most effective karate moves, Chastain got right back up and actually SMILED.  It wasn't long after this that Miller bailed out of the ring and fled to the back with Lamont and Johnny B. Badd, essentially forfeiting the match to a man that was simply too big and powerful for him to defeat.

(We go backstage now, where Masato Tanaka is standing by.)

Masato Tanaka: My partner, Sakata-san, suffered a terrible knee injury last
month, and if you did not hear, the New York State Tag Team Titles have been
vacated.  I have... been asked to talk about my plans for the future because
of this.  Of course, I will fight in singles matches and win many times.  But
it will only be because my partner... and friend... Sakata is unable to
compete.  Dangan is not dead, and when he is well we will retake our titles.
Until then, though, I will wait and watch the Five Team Elimination Match to
see who we must defeat.  Thank you.

(Fade out.)

[Lady Victoria interfered against Sean Waltman.]
[Lady Victoria interfered against El Mephisto.]

We have New York State Tag Team Champions!  This match could have gone any way, but it seemed from the beginning that most of the teams recognised The Harris Twins as the most threatening, thus both Harris Twins were heavily targeted in the early going.  It took 20 minutes, but eventually a heavily bleeding Don Harris was rolled up by El Mephisto, who used the ropes for leverage in the elimination.  Only a few minutes later, Chris Sabin of The Usurpers scored with a Tiger Suplex to put Edge away after several extremely close calls.  The match continued, with Waltman & Mephisto facing The Usurpers and the International Thug Syndicate.

After 30 minutes of fighting, the Syndicate finally made a major error when Reyes went for a dive which missed.  Waltman quickly capitalized with an X-Factor, eliminating both him and his partner.  This left only Waltman & Mephisto against The Usurpers, and in short order Lady Victoria passed a chair to Shamrock.  Shamrock brained El Mephisto with it, and three seconds later The Usurpers took the gold!

It's Masato Tanaka!  Mark Jindrak has selected Masato Tanaka to represent him against Randy Orton here tonight!  And, judging from the brevity of that match, either it was a very good choice or Randy Orton was willing to give away a loss to stay in good condition.  Perhaps we'll find out now, as he seems to be asking for a microphone.

(Randy Orton rubs his neck for a moment once he has the microphone, then
speaks as the crowd heckles him for losing in 30 seconds.)

Randy Orton: Oh, you liked that, didn't you?  I didn't ask for this series, you
know.  But whatever.  Mark.  I played your game.  I even let you win.  Now
it's time for you to play mine!  Just about now, my representative should be
arriving...

(We cut backstage now, where a long black limosine has pulled up.  The driver
opens the door, and who should appear but...  TRIPLE H!?!  Ric Flair follows
a moment later, grinning like crazy as always.  Ric talks as they walk.)

Ric Flair: Man Hunter, this is gonna be GREAT!  Just like old times in
Evolution!  Triple H and Randy Orton standing together!  The greatest wrestler
alive today allied with the greatest of the future!  WOOOOOO!  That punk
Orton's been having problems with won't know what hit him!

(We cut back to the ring, where the music hits.  TIME TO PLAY THE GAAAAAAAAAME!
"It's All About the Game" by Motorhead plays as Naitch and H make their way
to the ring wearing expensively tailored suits.  Orton grins and hands Hunter
the microphone.)

Triple H: Randy... when you told me you've been slumming it lately...  I had no
idea.  Listen guys, there's a thing we have outside of Long Island.  It's called
a shower.  Maybe some of you should look into them!

(The crowd boos Triple H loudly.)

Triple H: When my good friend Randy called me up the other day, he seemed
distracted.  "Hunter," he said, "there's this whiny bitch whose neck I broke in
some backwater indy, and he's taking it kind of personal.  Maybe you could talk
some sense into him."  So here I am!  Mark Jindrak, or whatever your name is,
listen to me!  After the next match, my music is going to hit.  I am going to
make my way to the ring, spit my water around, and do all my poses.  And you
are going to stay in the back and forfeit the match!  Understand?

(The crowd boos loudly.)

Triple H: 'Cause you might think you're hot shit standing tall in this tiny
little promotion.  But let me tell you.  You are nothing more than a big fish
in a small pond.  And I am the Hunter!  Hell, just listen to my entrance music!
I am the Game, and I am That... Damn... Good!  And if you just HAVE to test
yourself against the last proven commodity in the Wrestling business, remember
this.  I won't be held responsible if you just happen to suffer ANOTHER broken
neck in the ring against me!

[Too Cold Scorpio interfered against Paul London.]

This match barely began when a visible pissed off looking Too Cold Scorpio and Ricky Reyes hit the ring, tripping Paul London and getting the Syndicate disqualified.  Apparently winning the match wasn't as high on Scorpio's list of priorities as simply hurting someone, as the entire Syndicate begins stomping away at London!  Perry Saturn thinks for a moment... and abandons his partner to their assault.  The International Thug Syndicate is beating the hell out of Paul London!  But wait!  Here comes Simon Diamond!  He clotheslines Justin Credible out of the ring!  Kick to the groin of Reyes!  And he sets up Too Cold Scorpio for the Simonizer, but Shane Douglas pulls him down!  Simon Diamond has saved Paul London from the Syndicate when his own partner deserted him!

Kid Kash gave all he had in this match, but it proved to just not be enough.  No matter what he tried, Cactus Jack would not stay down.  All of his high-speed offense was certainly enough to keep Jack on the ropes, but he simply could not put him away for three!  Finally, in frustration Kash shoved down the referee, who angrily DQ'ed him on the spot.  As Kash argued the decision, Cactus Jack spun him around... Double Arm DDT!  Kid Kash is out, and Cactus Jack stands triumphant, even if his win was only by DQ.

Not only did Mark Jindrak stand up to Triple H, he took it to him from the opening bell, showing the fire which earned him the nickname "The Ironman" a year ago!  Triple H seemed unsure of how to deal with Jindrak's rare combination of brute strength and agility, as WWE has few pure athletes in his calibre.  After just over 10 minutes, and after surviving a massive Pedigree through a table, Jindrak scored the Mark of Excellence, sending Triple H to the mat in a heap.  One three count later, and Jindrak had beaten the Game.  As Ric Flair panicked on the outside, Jindrak looked directly at the camera and simply said, "You'll have to do better than that, Orton."

(Arn Anderson retained the New York State Heavyweight Title.)
[MsChif interfered against Arn Anderson.]

Erik Watts is seeking redemption.  The crowd believes that the biggest win of his career was a fluke, and he's trying to prove them wrong.  Taking MsChif on as his manager was the first step.  Defeating Frank Shamrock to become the top contender was next.  Pinning the Champion in non-title action was the third.  And this match was to be the final step.  Watts has clearly been training very hard, but in the end it simply wasn't enough to overcome Anderson's experience advantage.  Even though Anderson only barely kicked out of the Uranage, and even though Watts took two Spinebusters on the chin and kept coming, the end result proved that even MsChif didn't believe he was capable of winning.  Unfortunately, when she interfered in this title match it became a self-fulfilling prophecy, because her attempt to trip Double A only got Watts disqualified.  Arn Anderson retains his title, but perhaps not in the manner that he'd wished.

HA! Never trust TNM I guess, that Jindrak win... I wouldn't say it came out of nowhere because he's done the business in the LIW, but certainly it's extremely noteworthy for him to defeat Triple H. I wonder if art can really imitate life...

LIW Newsline - 8/22/06

Between The Usurpers capturing the New York State Tag Team Titles, Arn Anderson fending off Erik Watts, and a surprise appearance (and subsequent defeat at the hands of LIW's own "The Ironman" Mark Jindrak) by WWE's Triple H and Ric Flair, Summer Storms II ended up being every bit the major event that we had hoped.  The fans came out in droves, and they went home thrilled at a fantastic show.  Just when you thought that LIW's action-packed summer was over, however, it's time to announce our next show!  This Saturday, August 26, Long Island Wrestling will be making its debut in Wilmington Deleware!  And we've got quite a show on tap for this excited new audience.

LIW officials have been in contact with the doctors treating our injured competitors, and are pleased to announce that both Scott Hall and Wataru Sakata are recovering on shchedule.  What's even more positive is that Scott Hall has been completely dry since his injury, and appears very determined to put his personal demons behind him before he injures himself more seriously.  In his prime, Hall was one of the most influential workers of the 1990s.  If he keeps this work ethic, he may just end up recapturing his prime.  According to our latest estimates, Scott Hall's neck should be solid enough to wrestle on by sometime in November.  Wataru Sakata's knee should be healed up by December.

The latest rumor in the LIW front office is that a certain member of the booking committee has fallen out of favor with the other voting members for apparently exceeding his authority and using company funds for certain unauthorized purchases.  We don't know exactly what was involved, but gossip in the office suggests that it may have effected his decision-making somehow with regards to one of the major stables in Long Island Wrestling.  We will definately continue to investigate this story, and will give you the latest in the next Newsline.

Mark Jindrak is still in celebration over his extremely impressive victory over Triple H at Summer Storms II.  We here at Long Island Wrestling would like to thank WWE, Triple H and Ric Flair for making an appearance possible, even if their match turned out less successful than they might have hoped.  For his part, Randy Orton claims that Jindrak simply got lucky.  When Jindrak issued another challenge, Randy Orton once again refused it, saying that one fluke victory wasn't enough to prove that Jindrak is worthy of a rematch.  Apparently Orton plans to choose another opponent for Jindrak, this time promising that he'll even be on the LIW roster!  Who will Orton pick to face Mark Jindrak?  And will The Ironman be given a chance to issue a counter-challenge?

The Best of the Best Series will continue at our debut show in Wilmington.  Already signed from Bracket A is "The Animal" Batista vs. Paul London.  This will be London's first Best of the Best match, and Batista's second.  After being betrayed by his partner at Summer Storms II, London is said to be in an extremely foul mood, so it's entirely possible that he can overcome his massive size disadvantage against Batista.  For his part, Batista is extremely angry that Ernest Miller managed to pin him in the first ever Best of the Best match, and plans to (and we quote), "murder his next opponent."  Paul London is a hell of an athlete, but even he has his limits.  Can London stand up to an enraged Batista?

A Bracket B match has also been signed.  This one will pit Solo Snuka against Erik Watts.  Solo Snuka has already wrestled two out of his three matches, and has yet to get a win in the Best of the Best Series.  While it may be impossible for him to win at this point, defeating the last Top Contender in the Best of the Best Series would be a HUGE feather in Snuka's cap.  Watts, on the other hand, retains a ton of momentum.  With MsChif still at his side, and having only been defeated by Disqualification, Watts is now seen by many as a favorite to win Bracket B of the Best of the Best Series.  A victory over Solo Snuka may not be too remarkable, but it will be a first step in that direction.  Rumor has it that the booking committee is also discussing holding a second Bracket B match at the Wilmington show.

LIW Top Five:
Champion: "The Enforcer" Arn Anderson

1) vacant - The booking committee is reportedly extremely pleased with Anderson's performance as champion, and has decided to give him a month off from defending the title.  A new Top Contender will be crowned in September.

2) "The Monster" Edward Chastain - Chastain utterly destroys Ernest "The Cat" Miller, simply toying with him and then shrugging off every attempt at a comeback that Miller made.  That right there is scary strong.  Eventually Miller fled to the back rather than face defeat at the massive hands of Chastain.  Once again, The Monster appears to be all but unstoppable!

3) "The Ironman" Mark Jindrak - After impressively defeating Triple H at Summer Storms II, Mark Jindrak very nearly climbed to number two in the rankings.  Only a single vote kept Jindrak below Chastain in this Top Five.  If Jindrak can pick up another major victory, he should be back on top of the rankings!

4) Paul London - Paul London fought valiantly against the International Thug Syndicate, but four to one odds were simply too much for him.  Still, a DQ victory is still a victory, and with Orton's 30 second defeat at the hands of Masato Tanaka dropping him right out of contention, London picks up enough votes to hold onto the number 4 spot.

5) "The British Sensation" Jonny Storm - Jonny Storm was absolutely PWNED by Batista at Summer Storms II, but his overall positive record is enough to garner him just enough votes to stay in the top five for one more time.

I'm admittedly a bit out of the LIW loop, which I apologize for.  I've been a bad, bad boy. :(  I'll get back into the swing of things though.  I have a pretty good idea of what's going on, but if I say anything stupid, please correct me with correct information.

I like Round Robin tournaments, which makes it all the more strange than in any circuit I've ever done, I've never ran one (minus the Kurt Angle/Brock Lesnar/Booker T series of 3 matches on an Explosion back in GCW's summer).  Love to see Lance Storm win... I'm quite the Lance Storm fan, so yahoo for a good win there.

Batista rebounds nicely after Ernest Miller served him last week, and Jonny Storm continues to flounder.  I dunno... even when he was a main player, he never felt like a main player to me.

The Grandmasters of Funk!  Not a good night for Frankie, losing to f'n Marc Mero.  Ouch.

Well, at least the Cat didn't get eaten.

What a creepy interview by Tanaka.  Yeah... creepy.

I come back to LIW and you start by having Frank Shamrock win a title?  Ugh... a knife through my noble heart.  Good thinkg Sabin rules.  HAIL SABIN!

Tanaka obliterated Orton... that's... wow.  And Orton brings in Triple H!  Holy crap!

Perry Saturn is not a nice man.  At least he and London won though.  All kinds of friction there.  I love tag team tension angles, so I'll follow that one closely.

Cactus beats Kid Kash by DQ... cool?

Triple H was a huge surprise, but even a bigger surprise was that Jindrak wins clean!  That has to mean very big things for the Ironman.

I just don't like Arn Anderson as your champion.  I know TNM is fantasy, but the man has nerve damage, you know? :)  Either way, not the most noble way to retain his title, but retain he did.
Critic of the DawnPosted on 06/18/05 at 06:06:30

In the LIW universe, Arn Anderson had a revolutionary surgical procedure in late 2004 (think along the same lines as the one Angle had which patched his neck up without immobilizing it) which restored most of the functionality in his nerve-damaged hand. It's still not 100% and never will be, but Anderson was in good enough shape to wrestle again. Because he was dissappointed with the way that his friend Flair was badmouthing Foley, Anderson signed a short-term contract when Foley decided to open his own promotion. Just to help it get off the ground by adding some name value. Since the shows were only once a month at the start, he found that he was enjoying his time there, and decided to stay on.

Having him as my Heavyweight Champion was actually never even close to my intention, but that sort of thing happens when you run unbooked.

LIW Newsline - 8/24/06

We are only two days removed from our debut show in Wilmington Deleware, and we regretfully have some disturbing news to report.  And internal investigation has revealed that there is indeed a major issue within the booking committee!  We hinted at this in the last Newsline, but now we can report the full story.  Apparently one of the members of the committee has been embezzling funds, which he has used to pay for(and this is a quote from the company's latest bank statement) several things referred to as "Lady Victoria's Muscle Domination Sessions."  The Usurpers' manager Lady Victoria is indeed known to... shall we say... sell that sort of service to supplement her income.

Using the company's expense account to pay for such a thing is disgraceful enough, but when a fellow employee is also involved, it's just downright wrong.  Fears that the man's decisions may be influenced by Lady Victoria are apparently well founded, because it has been revealed that the unauthorized match he signed was an official title defense for "The Enforcer" Arn Anderson!  And the man that has been chosen to face him is none other than The Usurper's Monster and the #2 ranked wrestler in LIW, Edward Chastain!  While the booking committee member has been fired and we will pursue legal action against him, the contract has already been signed and 2 days will not be enough for our lawyers to have it annulled!  Thus, with only 2 days notice, Arn Anderson will be forced to defend against one of the most feared men in Long Island Wrestling today!

To make matters worse, Anderson had already agreed to face El Mephisto in a non-title match to keep his skills sharp.  While Anderson has requested that this match be cancelled, El Mephisto has refused to give his consent, and with only two days our lawyers cannot possibly invalidate this match contract either.   All we can do is place the match first in the evening to give Anderson as much time to recover as possible.  Frustratingly, we cannot even force Edward Chastain to compete in a second match to make things even due to an injunction filed by Lady Victoria.  While we believe we could defeat it in court quite easily, two days will not even be enough to get a court date.  Our hands are, unfortunately, tied.  Due to these terrible events, however, Saturday's show will be known as Coup D'Etat.

In an attempt to make up for this unpleasantness, the booking committee has signed a third Best of the Best Series match, this one pitting Lance Storm against Vampiro.  These two men are the highest ranked wrestlers in Bracket B.  Both of these men are fantastic wrestlers, combining strong grappling skills with high speed offense in a combination which many wrestlers have found almost impossible to defeat over the years, and both of them have already gained a victory here in the Best of the Best Series.  The winner of this match will have a very strong chance of winning Bracket B of the series, so it is indeed a very important bout.

While we cannot force Edward Chastain to face anyone else, we can punish The Usurpers by forcing them to put their tag team titles on the line just a week after they won them.  Many teams have been petitioning for a title shot for some time now, but after careful review it has been decided to have the International Thug Syndicate send two of its members to face Chris Sabin and Frank Shamrock for the New York State Tag Team Titles.  Too Cold Scorpio has contacted us and stated that the two members will "probably be Ricky Reyes and Justin Credible."  Both of these men know their way around a tag team match very well, and both have held a number of title belts.  Will their experience be enough to defeat The Usurpers?  At the moment, we're certainly hoping so.

The booking committee has also agreed that if Randy Orton can select Mark Jindrak's opponent a second time, then what's good for the goose is good for the gander.  Or something like that.  While we're not sure how applicable that old chestnut is to this situation, what we DO know is that Mark Jindrak is once again free to choose any opponent for Randy Orton from within Long Island Wrestling... with the exception of Cactus Jack.  As has been noted before, WWE has threatened to pull their talent if Cactus Jack is given another match with Randy Orton.  With a roster full of hungry talent available, who will Mark Jindrak pick?

Although we weren't planning on having to do this, here is a brief overview of the two wrestlers contending for the New York State Heavyweight Title at Coup D'Etat:

The Challenger:
"The Monster" Edward Chastain
6'3" 500 lbs
Signiture Move: Ground Zero Splash

There is nothing at all pretty about Edward Chastain's technique.  Indeed, he resembles a force of nature in the ring more than an actual wrestler - thus the name "Iceberg" that he uses in several other promotions.  With several inches of height advantage and about twice the mass of Arn Anderson, Chastain has proven to be extremely difficult for most people to take down for the simple reason that he is just too big.  Most wrestlers choose signiture moves based on the similar sized opponents that they will face most often, but a super-heavyweight like Chastain ends up being just too damn big for most of them to use.  With nearly unstoppable power and formidable brawling skills, Chastain MAY just be too much for Arn Anderson to defeat.  In a nutshell, all he has to do is brawl with a tired opponent for long enough to knock them onto the mat, then squash him flat using his 500 pound backside.  It may not be pretty, but it may just prove to be an unbeatable strategy.

The Champion:
"The Enforcer" Arn Anderson
5'11" 243 lbs
Signiture Move: Spinebuster

Arn Anderson is outweighed and overpowered in this match, and from the looks of things he will have a very difficult time against the massive Chastain.  He does have a few advantages, however.  Chastain is essentially the opposite of a scientific wrestler, so Anderson's knowledge of leverage just MIGHT be enough to gain an advantage on the mat.  IF he can get the big man off his feet.  Anderson is also has much better conditioning than his massive foe, but if his earlier match against El Mephisto goes at all long than this potential advantage could be gone in an instant.  With Chastain likely too large to use the Spinebuster against, Anderson's only hope may be to pick a body part and wear it down in hopes of forcing Chastain to tap out.
