LIW Caged Fury - 7/30/06

Critic of the DawnPosted on 06/08/05 at 05:30:58

Another very solid card.  LIW's roster has a number of older stars, and for the most part I'm actually portraying them as veterans who can't go like they used to (and thus giving them lower stats accordingly), but despite that match quality has remained high.  On this card there were 3 ****+ matches, which to me spells "can't miss show."  Anyway.  I hope you enjoy reading this as much as I did simming it.

Rating: * 3/4

Batista just plain underestimated Ernest Miller in this match, and in the end he paid dearly for it.  Batista played to the crowd for the first few minutes, tossing Miller around and playing to the crowd, who loved every minute of it.  Things turned around, however, when Miller scored with a Thrust Kick right to the back of Batista's head while he posed and flexed for the crowd, sending Batista reeling and quite obviously ringing his bell.  A visibly concussed Batista struggled on for ten minutes longer, but it was obvious that he wasn't sure where he was, for Miller was able to bring his karate skills into play before locking in a leg hammerlock for the tap out victory!  Ernest "The Cat" Miller has just won the first match in the Best of the Best Series!

("Paid the Cost to be the Boss" by James Brown hits as Ernest "The Cat" Miller
celebrates his shocking victory over Batista!  Lamont, standing on the outside,
grabs a microphone.)

Lamont: See?  Once again, the Hardest Working Man in Sports Entertainment has
stunned you all!  Isn't that right, Cat?

Ernest Miller: Ow!  Somebody Call My Momma!

Lamont: That's right!  See, we all know that a lot of you keep forgettin' that
The Cat here is a National Kar-a-tay Champion!  This victory should remind you
all of that!  I hope you remember, because The Cat is now well on his way to
being crowned Best of the Best here in Long Island Wrestling.  And you all know
what that means?

(Someone in the crowd shouts "Please say it doesn't mean you're going to
dance!")

Lamont: No, It means that it's time to celebrate!  Hit the music!

(The music hits again and Ernest "The Cat" Miller dances in the center of the
ring.  The crowd boos loudly as this goes on for several terrible minutes
before Vampiro and Solo Snuka, the two men competing in Bracket B of the Best
of the Best Series tonight hit the ring.  Miller and Lamont bail as the crowd
cheers in relief that another match is finally going to begin.)

Rating: *** 1/4

After the embarassment that was Ernest Miller's victory, the crowd was relieved to see a good, very even matchup such as the one here between Vampiro and Solo Snuka in Bracket B of the Best of the Best Series.  Snuka started the match off with a flurry of offense that sent Vampiro reeling, but once he had hit his Superfly Splash and Vampiro kicked out with authority, he seemed unsure how to continue his offensive plan.  Vampiro immediately took over, wearing Snuka down with a series of stiff kicks and power moves, then Spiked Snuka down!  But Snuka kicked out quickly and tried his best to come back, but after being Spiked once, he was ultimately easy prey to a second Vampiro Spike.

International Thug Syndicate (Justin Credible, Ricky Reyes and Too Cold Scorpio)
when M. Tanaka pinned R. Reyes after the Running Forearm Smash in 0:20:20.
Wataru Sakata injured his right knee.
Rating: *** 1/2

What a competitive match!  Both sides in this match came across as evenly matched, and since one of the sides is the formidable pairing known as Dangan, that's quite an accomplishment!  Both sides in this match exchanged brutal offense, with Simon Diamond especially seemingly intent on causing as much harm to his opponents as possible.  About halfway into this match, Wataru Sakata's knee buckled and he quickly staggered to tag out to Masato Tanaka.  While Simon Diamond checked on Sakata, Tanaka was left facing a comparitively fresh Ricky Reyes.  Reyes took advantage of Tanaka's greater fatigue to bring his suplexes, kicks, and submission holds into play before scoring his HUGE Avalanche Brain Buster for two and nine tenths!  Masato Tanaka refused to say die, however, and shortly thereafter he demonstrated one of his trademark knockout blows, leveling Reyes with a massive running forearm for an easy pinfall victory!  Wataru Sakata looks to be injured, however, and has to be helped to the back by Simon Diamond and Masato Tanaka.

Rating: * 1/2

El Mephisto frustrated Don Harris in this match, staying one step ahead of him for most of the match, and using his superior technical skills when he couldn't.  It isn't unusual for one of the Harris Twins to face someone faster or more technically adept then them, but in this case it proved to be enough to give El Mephisto a very solid victory after his esoteric Foreward Rolling Prawn Hold.

Rating: ****

Excellent match - one of the best of Ron Harris' career thus far!  From the beginning of this match, Jonny Storm was determined to start picking up victories again in the hopes that doing so would Redeem his Dream.  Ron Harris was looking for a chance to avenge his previous defeat.  Jonny Storm started things off with just as much speed as one would normally expect, but Harris shrugged off most of his fast-paced offense, even including a Super Rewind Huracanrana, before scoring with his Cobra Clutch Slam out of nowhere for a nearfall!  This obviously frustrated Harris, because from that point in he really laid into Jonny Storm, eventually getting himself disqualified for failing to break an illegal chokehold.

Another excellent match!  That makes two low-end Match of the Year Candidates in a row, and in this case at only 9 and a half minutes this was one of the most fastpaced and exciting matchups you're likely to see.  Kazarian brought the speed and high flying offense in this match, while Kid Kash slowed things down when it was necessary, using a brutal looking Boston Crab that nearly tore Kazarian in half on more than one occasion.  In the end, however, Kid Kash fell victim to the Wave of the Future.

Rating: *** 1/2

Edge and Sean Waltman had a very even and competitive matchup here.  The fans were clearly behind Edge, however, since Waltman hasn't been much of a crowd favorite since the late 1990s.  One thing Waltman is, however, is effective.  Waltman has made a career out of hanging with the heavyweights, and whether he relies on his martial arts background or his great speed he is quite good at pulling out victories.  In this case it was a brutal spinning heel kick which put Edge down for the count.

Johnny B. Badd hit the ring in a celebratory mood, pleased as punch that his partner in The Grandmasters of Funk won his Best of the Best match tonight.  Who would Badd's opponent be?  None other than the undefeated "Superfly" Jimmy Snuka!  Superfly went into this match with every bit as much fire as his son showed against Vampiro earlier tonight, but ultimately he came up short after being knocked out cold by a Badd Mood on the concrete and a second in the ring to ensure that he stayed down.  Johnny B. Badd has snapped Jimmy Snuka's winning streak here, and with that victory the Grandmasters of Funk finish the night looking extremely strong!

(We go backstage now, where The Usurpers are loitering around the catering
area.  Seeing the camera, Frank Shamrock and Lady Victoria approach.  Edward
Chastain, on the other hand, is too busy eating several dozen slices of cake
to notice.)

Frank Shamrock: Ever since Erik Watts defeated me last week to become the top
contender for the New York State Heavyweight Title, people have been talking to
me.  "Frank, what the hell happened there?" they ask.  I'll tell you.  Not a
damn thing.  Watts got lucky, that's all!  Hell, the dirtsheets are all as
stunned as I was after the bastard potatoed me!

Lady Victoria: Of course, there's no doubt that that bitch MsChif will claim it
was all her managerial expertise.  "Manager of Champions" my ass!  I'll tell
you who the REAL manager of champions is here!  ME!  It's only a matter of
time!

Frank Shamrock: It's quite simple.  Any of us could conceivably contend for the
New York State Heavyweight Title.  And the other two of us are CLEARLY a lock
to hold the New York State Tag Team Titles, especially now that Wataru Sakata
is apparently injured.

Lady Victoria: It's only a matter of time now.  The gold here in Long Island
Wrestling will inevitably come to us!  Because there is no stopping The
Usurpers!

Edward Chastain: Mmm... cake...

Well, if The Usurpers were attempting to demonstrate just how formidable they can be in tag team action, defeating former New York State Tag Team Champion Paul London and his new partner Perry Saturn in just minutes is certainly a good way to do so.  This was actually a very even match in the first few minutes, then Chastain tossed London to the outside and beat him down in a sugar-fueled rampage of death culminating in the Ground Zero Splash.  London SOMEHOW kicked out from under the 500 pound monster, but before he could tag out, Frank Shamrock took him down and locked in a submission, forcing him to tap out in short order.

And there's a third excellent match!  Long Island Wrestling is really producing fantastic matches like they were going out of style here tonight!  Of course, with athletes as talented as Cactus Jack, Arn Anderson and Chris Sabin, it isn't that surprising.  What WAS surprising was the result of this match.  Erik Watts spends the majority of the match hiding on the outside, then emerges to break up Chris Sabin's pin attempt on Arn Anderson, tags himself in, and scores with the Uranage for the victory!  The top contender, Erik Watts, has just pinned the New York State Heavyweight Champion in non-title action tonight!

(As a stunned Arn Anderson slowly clambers back to his feet, MsChif grabs a
microphone and gets in his face.)

MsChif: You see?!?  You see!?!  I told you all that Erik Watts was the real
deal!  I told you all that I could see something none of you could!  And I told
you all that this pathetic old man would be dropping the New York State
Heavyweight Title back to MY client, Erik Watts!

(The Enforcer rubs his neck for a moment, then grabs the microphone.)

Arn Anderson: Is that so?  From where I was standing, it seemed an awful lot
like Watts hid like a coward, then ambushed me.  When the time comes, I'll face
Watts fair and square in a straight up match.  And then I'll beat him just like
I did last time we fought for the title.  One.  Two.  Three.

(MsChif is furious, and shrieks at Arn.)

MsChif: No!  You don't understand!  If you had defended your title tonight as
was originally planned, you would have lost it!  But you know deep down, deep
deep down inside of you... you know that Erik Watts has what you once had.
Passion!  Strength!  And the heart of a champion!  You're only holding onto
your title tonight because we allowed you to.  So enjoy your reprieve, Gramps!
MY client will be taking your title the next time you meet!

(Fade out so the cage can be set up.)

Rating: *** 1/2

Mark Jindrak was ready to kick some ass and take some names, and the only name in the cage with him was Randy Orton.  Orton, on the other hand, had a plan.  Barely two minutes into the match, Orton spit right into Jindrak's eyes, blinding him for just long enough to score with the RKO, a move that targets the neck.  Since Jindrak just returned from a neck injury literally a week ago, this took the wind out of his sails big time.  Though Jindrak did his best to battle back into the contest, a second RKO and several pin attempts using the tights for leverage eventually resulted in success for Orton, who quickly bails from the cage as soon as the door opens, leaving a frustrated... nay, FURIOUS Mark Jindrak to shout after him that this wasn't the last time the two would meet!  We are out of time everybody!  Thanks for watching!

Batista goes down to the Cat? This most be upset of the year on the boards (maybe CarlZilla will claim that it was Doug Williams defeating Kenta Kobashi though).

Good thing for Simon that he got some revenge over his former allies in TITS. If Sakata's injury is serious, Dangan can potentially lose their belts.. unless.. unless you let Simon Diamond join forces with Tanaka! Now that's a good idea.

Not the best night for the Harris Twins though, they have REUNION written all over their bald foreheads  ;D

Hmm.. Watts gets the pin in the non-title bout.. things look dark on the horizon, but I have faith in Double A. You hear that Arn? I believe in you!!!

A bodyslam wins the cage match? Kinda disappointing, but it's not your fault that someone has ticked off the "may finish match" box in the TNM Control Center.

Can't wait to my own cage match though  ;D
Nice show, and congrats with the great ratings.

LIW Newsline - 8/11/06

Considering how little notice the fans in Buffalo had to get tickets for Caged Fury, the arena was packed with fans eagerly anticipating the confrontation between Randy Orton and Mark Jindrak!  Not only did the fans there witness Orton pulling out a victory in a blatantly unfair and underhanded manner, but they ended up seeing what turned out to be one of the best cards top to bottom in Long Island Wrestling's History.  As has been noted elsewhere on our website, LIW's next show will be a return to Long Island on August 19 for the first time since May!  Our hometown fans are absolutely rabid, and with a roster as stacked as ours, they're almost guaranteed a show to remember.

As you saw at Caged Fury, Wataru Sakata suffered a knee injury during Dangan's match agains the International Thug Syndicate.  In the time since Caged Fury, he has seen several doctors, and unfortunately the prognosis is not good.  Wataru Sakata will require knee surgery, and is already scheduled for it this Tuesday.  Although it varies a lot depending on the person, recovery time for the type of surgery that Sakata is getting is typically in the neighborhood of three to six months.  Asked to give a more specific estimate of Sakata's return, doctors said that he would probably be in ring shape again in December.  This places the booking committee in an interesting position, as Dangan are presently the New York State Tag Team Champions.  When we know how they will handle this situation, we will let you know.

LIW is so confident that this show will be a good one that they have decided to name it Summer Storms II.  Last year's Summer Storms card was a huge success, and it has been decided to make the Storms series a recurring event!  For those who don't remember, last year's Summer Storms card featured the LIW debut of Chris "HAIL!" Sabin, "The Ironman" Mark Jindrak, and "Big Sexy" Kevin Nash as well as an excellent Streetfight between Cactus Jack and Chris Sabin and a highly rated confrontation between Don Juan and Jonny Storm.  If Summer Storms II is even half as eventful as last year's event, it will truly be a can't miss event!

"The Ironman" Mark Jindrak has filed a challenge to Randy Orton for a rematch, but Orton claims that Jindrak is beneath him.  The booking committee does not agree, however, and while Orton does have the right to refuse Jindrak's challenge, they have decided that Jindrak and Orton will have to choose each other's opponents for Summer Storms.  With a roster stacked with incredible talent as well as good relations with the rest of the wrestling industry, our fans could see just about ANYONE at Summer Storms II!  You won't want to miss the next chapter in the Jindrak/Orton rivalry, so be sure to be in Long Island on August 19!

Solo Snuka came extremely close to winning his Bracket B match against Vampiro at Caged Fury, and he is reportedly ready to go against his next opponent.  He had better be, because he will be facing Lance Storm to open Summer Storms II!  Solo Snuka combines speed and strength in a manner not seen since the heyday of his father, but Lance Storm is an expert technician and has much more experience than Snuka.  This Bracket B match in the Best of the Best series will defiantely be worth watching!  Snuka needs a win here if he hopes to pull out a victory in his bracket, while Lance Storm hopes to put himself on the board right from the start and put one of his opponents essentially out of contention.

Over in Bracket A of the Best of the Best Series, The Grandmasters of Funk have been celebrating Ernest Miller's huge upset victory over Batista.  Batista was the favorite of many to win the entire Best of the Best Series, but with this defeat he will have a hard time winning his bracket.  Miller, on the other hand, is in an excellent position to advance.  Unfortunately for him, he has drawn "The Monster" Edward Chastain as his opponent for Summer Storms II!  Chastain has been an almost unstoppable destructive force here in LIW since his debut, and as skilled as Miller is in karate, he may have difficulty knocking the 500 pounder off his feet!  Chastain is reportedly extremely confident, and claims that nothing will stop him from winning the Best of the Best Series.

Finally, we can reveal that Mark Jindrak has already selected Randy Orton's opponent.  When we asked him who it would be, Jindrak would only say that it is a wrestler under contract to Long Island Wrestling.  Considering the amount of talent under contract to LIW, that doesn't narrow things down much.  You have to expect that it will be someone near the top of the card, however.  One person it cannot be is Cactus Jack.  When we contacted WWE for comment, they confirmed that Randy Orton was still barred from fighting Cactus Jack, and would be pulled from all future LIW shows if Long Island Wrestling attempted to get around that ban.  This obviously isn't something that anyone wants, so it stands to reason that it must be somebody else... but who!?!

LIW Top Five:
Champion: "The Enforcer" Arn Anderson

1) Erik Watts - Watts remains the top contender, and after a HUGE non-title victory over Arn Anderson he has positioned himself as a major challenger to Arn Anderson's New York State Heavyweight Title.  Will MsChif's management prove to be the guidance that Erik Watts needs to become the first ever Two Time New York State Heavyweight Champion?  Most of our fans certainly seem to hope not.

2) "The Monster" Edward Chastain - Chastain remains in the number two spot after an assist to Usurper leader Frank Shamrock in a tag team match against Perry Saturn & Paul London.  With a position in the Best of the Best Series, The Monster appears likely to break out as a top level star in LIW over the next few months.

3) "The Ironman" Mark Jindrak - Jindrak may have lost both of his matches since returning, but since he is coming off of a serious neck injury that is perhaps understandable.  At Summer Storms II, he will have had the time he needs to get back into the ring shape that he became famous for here in LIW.  Believe us when we say that we're very excited to see this.  Excited enough to vote him as number three in the Top Five.

4) Paul London - What can we say about Paul London that hasn't already been said?  He's an amazing talent, and in singles competition he has a very strong 4-1 record.  While his recent tag team with Perry Saturn doesn't seem to be working out as well as his old pairing with Don Juan, London is a man to watch!

5) "The British Sensation" Jonny Storm - Jonny Storm claws his way back into the Top Five after a very close DQ victory over "Violent R" Ron Harris.  While Storm hasn't been winning enough to move up as of late, he always gains a few votes from the booking committee for his consistent performance - thus his fairly regular appearance at number five.

LIW Newsline - 8/16/06

Summer Storms II has already drawn a huge amount of buzz here on our message boards and on other wrestling sites.  People are wondering just what we have in store - and believe us, we're dying to tell you!  But with only three days left, we think you can wait just a little longer.  We promise, however, that the show will be well worth your while, as both the New York State Heavyweight Title and the New York State Tag Team Titles will be on the line.  Not only that, but two Best of the Best matches will be held, plus we will witness the continuation of the Randy Orton vs. Mark Jindrak feud.  With that in mind, let's get down to business!

To start this Newsline off, we regretfully must make the announcement that the booking committee has decided to vacate the New York State Tag Team Titles.  This is seen as a very unpopular move in the Long Island Wrestling offices since Dangan is widely regarded as one of the best tag teams anywhere in the world by more than a few of our employees!  The booking committee says, however, that even though the title has not been defended as regularly as the New York State Heavyweight Title, a five month period with no defenses is far far too long.  Furthermore, they refuse to tarnish the credibility of the titles by handing them over.  Masato Tanaka has been invited to find another partner to contend for the belts, but he has declined, stating that he will compete in singles action until his partner Wataru Sakata returns from his knee injury.

With that in mind, a massive five-team elimination match has been signed for Summer Storms II!  Five of the top tag teams in Long Island Wrestling will all square off inside our ring, and the last team standing will have proven themselves worthy of becoming the next New York State Tag Team Champions.  This should be a very exciting match, because some incredible talent is lined up.  To start things off, The Harris Twins will team together for the first time in several months in hopes of finally winning the gold.  Frank Shamrock and Chris Sabin of The Usurpers have both been on a roll lately, and accordingly they will have a chance to capture gold here at Summer Storms II.  The Usurpers won't be the only stable represented, however!  Too Cold Scorpio claims that he will personally bring gold to the International Thug Syndicate for the first time when he teams up with stablemate Ricky Reyes for this match!  The relatively new pairing of El Mephisto and Sean Waltman will also be present, and looking to prove that they can hang with any of the top groups in the industry.  Finally, rounding out the group will be Vampiro and Edge, who took Dangan to their limits in their most recent title defense.  One of these teams will capture the vacant New York State Tag Team Titles!  Who will it be?  We'll see in Long Island on Saturday!

One tag team which will NOT be contending for the New York State Tag Team Titles is the pairing of Perry Saturn and Paul London.  Saturn and London are both fantastic talents, but as late they seem to be like oil and water in tag team action - they just don't mix well!  Miscommunications and one-upmanship have plagued this pairing since they first started tagging, and they have captured many fewer wins than was originally expected.  Both men claim that they want to excel, that they want to contend for the New York State Tag Team Titles.  They simply don't have the momentum to do so.  Hopefully, facing Justin Credible and Shane Douglas of the International Thug Syndicate will both be some consolation and allow them to begin turning their fortunes around.

Randy Orton has contacted our offices stating that he has found the perfect opponent for "The Ironman" Mark Jindrak!  Orton has refused to say exactly who it is, but will confirm that it is a fellow WWE superstar whom he has wrestled several times in the past.  From Ric Flair to Chris Benoit, Randy Orton has crossed paths with some incredible wrestlers in his day, so his specially picked opponent for Jindrak could be just about anyone.  Not even the booking committee knows who this wrestler will be - they have simply been informed that he will be arriving by limo shortly before his match is scheduled to begin!  This has the makings of a HUGE match, ladies and gentlemen!

Finally, in the main event of the evening, Erik Watts will get his shot against "The Enforcer" Arn Anderson for the New York State Heavyweight Title.  If Watts can once again score with the Uranage, he may be able to become Long Island Wrestling's first ever Two Time New York State Heavyweight Champion!  As has become customary, we will now present you with a brief overview of those wrestling for the New York State Heavyweight Title.

The Challenger:
Erik Watts w/ MsChif
6'6" 260 lbs
Signiture Move: Uranage

Erik Watts has been working on his technical game over the past few months, and that along with the leadership of MsChif seems to have paid off in an opportunity to recapture the New York State Heavyweight Title.  He is still light years behind the champion in this respect, however, and many believe that if it were not for his cheap tactics he never would have pinned Arn Anderson at Caged Fury.  That is neither here nor there, however.  What must be considered is that Watts has someone watching his back.  Someone who has managed a champion before and seen how to defeat men like Arn Anderson.  Erik Watts is almost certainly not able to hang with Anderson in a wrestling standpoint.  MsChif's presence may help him to pick his spots to maximize the effectiveness of his size and power advantage.  If it does, Watts just MIGHT be more than Anderson can handle.

The Champion:
"The Enforcer" Arn Anderson
5'11" 243 lbs
Signiture Move: Spinebuster

Arn Anderson originally defeated Erik Watts to win the New York State Heavyweight Title.  He may be old, but he's always been an amazingly solid wrestler, a competent brawler, and a mat technician feared by his opponents.  Since returning to wrestling in 2005, Anderson has proven that he has scarecely lost a step, putting on fantastic match after fantastic match and defending the New York State Heavyweight Title against all comers.  Logic dictates that since Anderson originally won the title from Watts, he should be able to defeat Watts again fairly easily if this is a fair fight.  After all, other than his youth and his power, Watts doesn't have a single real advantage over him.  MsChif can help him overcome this, however, so at Summer Storms II Anderson will find out just why two heads is better than one!  How can he defeat this?  MsChif and Erik Watts have likely been watching a lot of video tapes of Anderson's greatest matches to see how he works.  If Anderson can consciously try to avoid some of the patterns he's fallen into over a long career, he may be able to stay far enough ahead of Watts and MsChif to triumph.

Matches confirmed for Summer Storms II:
* Solo Snuka vs. Lance Storm in a Bracket B Best of the Best Match
* "The Monster" Edward Chastain vs. Ernest "The Cat" Miller in a Bracket A Best of the Best Match
* The Harris Twins vs. The Usurpers vs. ITS vs. El Mephisto & Sean Waltman vs. Vampiro & Edge in a Five Team Elimination Match for the vacant New York State Tag Team Titles!
* Randy Orton vs. An opponent selected by Mark Jindrak
* Perry Saturn & Paul London vs. ITS of "The Franchise" Shane Douglas and Justin Credible
* Mark Jindrak vs. An opponent selected by Randy Orton
* Erik Watts vs. "The Enforcer" Arn Anderson for the New York State Heavyweight Title

Also confirmed for Summer Storms II are "The British Sensation" Jonny Storm, Cactus Jack, "The Animal" Batista, "The Notorious KID" Kid Kash, Frankie "The Future" Kazarian, "Dangan" Masato Tanaka, and Johnny B. Badd.
