LIW Return of the Ironman - 7/23/06

Critic of the DawnPosted on 05/26/05 at 19:17:38

I'm about to go on vacation for the long weekend to the Poconos, so there won't be any LIW updates until Monday night at the earliest.  Still, I made sure to get this card run last night so that I could post it today, because I know you'd all just DIE if you didn't get your LIW fix.  Anyway, on the whole this show went very well, but if I was doing it again I think I'd have changed the ending a bit.  But that's neither here nor there.  Enjoy it.

As soon as the lights went down for the start of our show, "Paid the Cost to be the Boss" by James Brown hit and The Grandmasters of Funk made their way to the ring.  What followed was two minutes of extremely painful dancing as Lamont shouted about how it just didn't get any better than this.  Just as the fans were about to take him at his word and get out of Dodge, "War Pigs" by Black Sabbath hit, and "Violent R" Ron Harris dashed down to the ring.  Ernest Miller quickly bailed out of the ring, but Johnny B. Badd attempted to fight back.  The bell rang and we began with a brutal impormptu matchup.  Badd outclassed Harris on speed and technical ability by a considerable margin, but in the end Harris was simply too big for Badd, and after absorbing mountains of punishment, he dished out several Cobra Clutch Slams, including one on the concrete floor, leaving Johnny B. Badd unconscious and Ron Harris victorious once again!

(We go backstage now, where Perry Saturn and Paul London are getting ready to
tag with each other for the first time.)

Paul London: So... Perry... I just have to say again that it's a real honor to
be teaming with a veteran like you.  I loved you back in ECW, and you've always
impressed me as a seriously tough guy.  Once we get used to working together,
we can probably be just as good as Don Juan and I were.

Perry Saturn: Probably?

Paul London: Don Juan and I have known each other for years.  That's all I'm
saying.

Perry Saturn: Look kid.  Don't sweat it.  You've got a ton of talent.  Just
follow my lead for now, and we'll do great together.

(Paul London nods at this, then frowns.)

Paul London: Don't worry about me.  I've already won the tag team titles once
here.  So you know I can hold up my end of the match.

Perry Saturn: Are you implying something?

Paul London: No.  I'm just saying.  I don't need you to hold my hand through
this.  We should be just fine.

Perry Saturn: Of course we'll be just fine.  We're facing Lance Storm & Kid
Kash.  Neither of them has exactly been on what you'd call a winning streak
lately.  Anyway.  I'll see you out there.

Paul London: Thanks.

Perry Saturn: You're welcome.

(Paul London chuckles at this.)

Perry Saturn: ...what?

Paul London: You said "you're welcome!"

(Perry Saturn gives Paul London a dirty look.)

Perry Saturn: Do NOT go there.

(Fade out.)

Perry Saturn and Paul London worked well enough together.  It's clear, however, that Lance Storm and Kid Kash are getting desperate to pick up some wins together, as they actually got themselves disqualified here in this match before it had even really begun by attempting to pull the tights.  An easy victory for Perry Saturn and Paul London, though not perhaps the kind of victory they were hoping for.

Four Corners Match:

pinned Douglas with the Superfly Splash in 0:22:00.
Rating: *** 1/2

This started out as an excellent, competitive match but quickly degenerated into a Pier 6 brawl as Ricky Reyes and Lash LeRoux began to brawl outside as Shane Douglas and Jimmy Snuka wrestled inside.  In short order, the referee lost all control of the match, which quickly grew into an exchange of shots with assorted foreign objects between Douglas and Snuka as Reyes and LeRoux brawled to the back.  No longer sure who was the legal man anyway, the referee ignored the countout and let the fight continue until Snuka finally put Douglas down for long enough to hit the Superfly Splash for the pinfall!

(As Jimmy Snuka leaves to the cheers of the crowd, Shane Douglas slowly gets to
his feet and grabs a microphone.)

Shane Douglas: Oh, you (CENSORED) like that, do you?  It (CENSORED) figures you
would.  You came all the way here to see the Franchise lose, didn't you?

(The crowd boos Douglas loudly)

Shane Douglas: Well I hope you enjoyed the show.  Because that's the last time
it's going to happen.  I came here to make an impact, and that's exactly what
I'm going to do!  And there is (CENSORED) all that anyone can do to stop me!

(A woman at ringside covers her child's ears and shouts something about Douglas
watching his language.)

Shane Douglas: Oh really?  Well (CENSORED) (CENSORED) (CENSORED) (CENSORED)
(CENSORED) (CENSORED) in your (CENSORED) (CENSORED) (CENSORED) (CENSORED) you
(CENSORED) (CENSORED)!

(The audience is stunned at that formidable string of obscenities, and is
silent for a moment.)

Shane Douglas: Now that I have your attention... I promise that by the end of
the night, I will make the impact I said I would.  They say that good things
come to those who wait.  *I* say that good things come to those who take!  And
that's just what I'm going to do!  So (CENSORED) you all, because none of you
can stop me!

Jonny Storm came out to this match with a noticable limp, clearly still not being at 100% after being beaten down by The Usurpers last month.  Still he did his best to attempt to Redeem his Dream, calling out Wataru Sakata, one half of the New York State Tag Team Champions.  Unfortunately, with a man as skilled in submissions as Sakata, being any less than 100% is almost a guaranteed ticket to defeat, and this was no exception.  Sakata immediately isolated Storm's leg, tweaking it with several painful holds and targeting it with quite a few of his stiff kicks.  After ten minutes, Jonny Storm was essentially grounded and thus an easy target for the Single-Leg Crab Hold, which forced him to tap out in short order.

This wasn't pretty by any stretch of the imagination, but The Monster's almost effortless defeat of Don Harris just goes to show once again how powerful The Usurpers are becoming.  As Chastain squashed Harris with a HUGE senton, Lady Victoria shouted with glee on the outside!  The Usurpers have won the first of their three matches this evening with ease, and Frank Shamrock's Top Contendership match against Erik Watts is up next!

[Lady Victoria interfered against Erik Watts.]

Frank Shamrock entered this match extremely confident, outright toying with Erik Watts, focusing on embarassing both him and his manager with takedowns, slaps, and a few submission holds which he released quickly to prolong the battle.  This proved to be a mistake, because Erik Watts simply took the punishment until Shamrock was certain he was definately going to lose.  At that point, Shamrock got sloppy, and Watts took advantage at the first opportunity, taking him down with a hard lariat, tossing him out of the ring, beating him savagely, and locking in an abdominal stretch for over 30 seconds.  As Shamrock struggled back to his feet, Watts dashed across the ring, leaped into the air and scored with a flying clothesline right to the jaw, allowing him to pick up the pinfall to become the Top Contender!  On the outside, Lady Victoria is furious, and turns right into a slap in the face from MsChif!  This night is not turning out at all as planned for The Usurpers anymore!

And here come the Grandmasters of Funk, once again trying to do their stupid dance for the crowd!  But no!  Masato Tanaka dashes out to shut them up once again!

[Lamont and Johnny B. Badd interfered against Masato Tanaka.]

Once again "Paid the Cost to be the Boss" by James Brown hits and The Grandmasters of Funk head out to the ring.  Once again they begin dancing, although Johnny B. Badd looks quite a bit worse for the wear after the beating he suffered at the hands of Ron Harris earlier in the show.  They have only danced for a few seconds, however, when Dangan's music hits, and one half of the New York State Tag Team Champions Masato Tanaka hits the ring swinging!  Masato Tanaka spent the first eight minutes of this match absolutely KILLINg Miller with stiff strikes that left him reeling.  However, Lamont and Johnny B. Badd had apparently seen enough, and a pair of brass knux were quickly passed to Miller, who hit Tanaka square between the eyes with them for a very close nearfall.  Growing frustrated, Miller tossed Tanaka out of the ring and distracted the referee, allowing Johnny B. Badd to suplex Tanaka into the ring stairs!  Tanaka is out cold, and Miller finally picks up his first victory - and what a victory it is.  Does this mean that The Grandmasters of Funk are in line for a shot at the New York State Tag Team Titles?

This was a friendly match between two of LIW's biggest fan favorites, and the fans loved every second of it.  Cactus Jack exploded out of the gates with his customary roughneck brawling mixed with a few power moves, but Anderson simply waited for his momentum to wane before starting in with some brawling of his own.  After a short but well worked match, Anderson managed to catch Cactus Jack with the Spinebuster for a three count.  Following the match, Cactus Jack raised Anderson's hand and wished him luck against his next opponent.  What a classy display!

Too Cold Scorpio called out Ron Harris before this show in the hopes that he could earn a victory and so prove that he is worthy of leading the International Thug Syndicate.  Well, even though one might attribute his victory here to Ron Harris already having wrestled, win he did, outlasting the big man and eventually forcing him to tap out!

(Too Cold Scorpio grabs a microphone after his victory.)

Too Cold Scorpio: And THAT... is how it's done!  Now that I've had a little fun,
it's time to get down to business.  Will the Syndicate please assemble?

(One by one, Justin Credible, Ricky Reyes, and finally ITS leader Simon Diamond
make their way to the ring.)

Simon Diamond: Very impressive, Scorpio.  I'm very proud of you, and-

Too Cold Scorpio: Hold it.  I'm not done.  While you've been nursing your sore
ego, I've enlisted a new member for the Syndicate.

("Perfect Strangers" by Deep Purple hits, and "The Franchise" Shane Douglas
makes his way out.)

Too Cold Scorpio: Simon Diamond, I'm sure you remember Shane Douglas.

Simon Diamond: I do... but what gives you the right to-

Shane Douglas: Shut your (CENSORED) mouth, Simon.  Scorpio is talking.

Too Cold Scorpio: Thank you, Shane.  Now, the entire Syndicate has seen that
you've been having problems getting a win lately... how many months has it been
now?

(Simon Diamond fumes, but doesn't answer.)

Too Cold Scorpio: Too long, I'm afraid.  Under Booker T, this group meant
something.  But for you... you just use it as an excuse to further your own
ambitions!  And they haven't even been going well!  It's time for a change in
leadership.

Simon Diamond: Oh is that so?  How dare you!  You think YOU have what it-

(Simon Diamond is cut off as Shane Douglas spins him around and delivers the
Franchiser, laying him out.)

Shane Douglas: I told you to shut your (CENSORED) mouth...

Too Cold Scorpio: The Syndicate requires results.  You haven't gotten any.  So
consider yourself demoted, Simon.  And if you can't deal with that...  Things
will get very painful for you very quickly.

(Ricky Reyes and Justin Credible both nod ominously.)

Too Cold Scorpio: As of this moment, I declare myself the new International
Thug Syndicate leader.  And Shane Douglas here is my advisor and right hand
man!  It's time to get things going our way again...

Two of WWE's top stars collided here in a very strong match which was requested by an official representative of WWE.  After a very even exchange which demonstrated both Randy Orton's conniving tactics and Batista's animalistic strength, Batista managed to get the advantage, going for a huge Batista Bomb.  Orton low-blowed his way out, then resumed his offense after one more kick to the jimmies for good measure.  After a short time, however, Batista managed to shrug off the pain, boot Orton in the gut, and send him crashing down to the ground with a Batista Bomb for the victory.

As Batista celebrates, Orton rolls out of the ring, grabs the HKW HEAD OF THE CLASS Title Belt, scores with one more low blow, and nearly takes Batista's head off with the title belt!  Orton stomps away at Batista, looking enraged at his loss, until "Adrenaline" by Gavin Rossdale hits and MARK JINDRAK dashes down the aisle!  Orton quickly bails and flees through the crowd as The Ironman gestures to him and shouts that he's coming for him!

Waltman by disqualification in 0:12:15.
Rating: * 3/4

El Mephisto and Sean Waltman have proven to be an extremely effective pairing, however Waltman especially relies quite a bit on... questionable tactics to win - tactics which backfired in this match against Edge & Vampiro.  Waltman knocked down the referee in the hopes that he and El Mephisto could double team Vampiro at their leisure, but the referee was apparently less shaken than might have been common in certain other organizations Waltman has wrestled for, and so he promptly disqualified him once he managed to get back to his feet.

[Lady Victoria interfered against Mark Jindrak.]

What a match!  Chris Sabin narrowly ekes out a victory against the always dangerous Mark Jindrak, taking advantage of the fact that Jindrak has not yet had a chance to get fully back into fighting condition.  Still, Jindrak showed no hesitation, taking every chance he could to go on the offensive.  He even scored a very close nearfall with the Mark of Excellence, which Sabin was unable to connect with the Future Shock!  In the end, however, Sabin locked Jindrak into a Canadian Backbreaker and wrenched back on Jindrak's neck, causing Jindrak to tap out quickly rather than risk further injury.  Either Jindrak isn't quite at 100% yet... or Chris Sabin has just proved how much of a threat he is!

Lady Victoria departs with Chris Sabin, holding his hand up high.  Then, who should come skulking back through the crowd but Randy Orton?  Seeing his fallen foe, Orton wastes no time pulling him back to his feet and... BANG!  RKO!  Mark Jindrak is out cold, and Randy Orton is shouting that Jindrak should have retired when he had the chance!  Ladies and gentlemen, business is about to pick up!  But we are out of time!  We'll see you at the next show!

I am really nervous about Erik Watts getting another title shot... hopefully, double A will take care of him.

I really didn't see Diamond as a credible leader of the ITS, so hopefully 2 Cold Scorpio will bring some much needed leadership to the group.

Hehe.. did you watch RAW last Monday? When Tomko asked Christian who Mark Jindrak was? I was shouting "He's the IRONMAN!" to the screen.. funny moment..

I have been dying to ask you.. who is the RoH version of the "former tag-team wrestler" who you concentrate a great deal on? Homicide?
Critic of the DawnPosted on 05/31/05 at 01:25:40

Homicide is indeed the former tag team wrestler equivalent from ROH.  In the first year of ROH, Homicide teamed with Boogalu to form a highly pushed team known as the Natural Born Sinners.  Towards the end of 2002, Boogalu was signed away by XPW, which was trying to take over the Philly Indy Wrestling scene at the time.  He no-showed a date and was subsequently blackballed from working in ROH again, and Homicide went on to receive a main event push from 2003 on.

In LIW, Ron Harris is obviously the man in this position, although Don is still working for LIW in a much lower profile midcard role.

LIW Newsline - 7/26/06

Return of the Ironman drew a very respectable crowd given the new location, with many fans driving dozens of miles to make their way to New Haven to witness the much anticipated return of "The Ironman" Mark Jindrak and his fantastic return match against Chris Sabin.  Though he came up short in this effort, the crowd was buzzing as they left, because a confrontation between Orton and Jindrak with both men healthy has been anticipated for months now!  We have a strong suspicion that these two are far from finished with each other, and plans are already underway to make our next show unforgettable!  Speaking of our next show, it will be held in Buffalo on July 30 - just a few days from now!  Order your tickets now, because they won't last long!

LIW's soon to begin Best of the Best series has been attracting major interest on the independent wrestling scene, and several major wrestling sites including PWInsider and PWTorch have covered it along with their predictions as to who will win.  From what we've seen, Batista and Paul London are viewed as the two favorites to win Bracket A, while Lance Storm is expected by many to dominate Bracket B.  We are, of course, pleased that so many people have been taking an interest in Best of the Best, and are equally pleased to announce that competition will begin on July 30 in our second home of Buffalo New York!

A match from both brackets has been signed.  First, in Bracket A, favorite to win the whole competition Batista will face none other than Ernest "The Cat" Miller.  Miller has only one victory under his belt here in LIW, and has joined Best of the Best in the hopes of proving that he fights as well as he dances.  Batista is reportedly extremely confident because, quote, "Miller is a joke."  Miller claims that Batista is simply underestimating him, and that he will get funky on Batista's ass when the two meet to start the show!  Upon being informed of this, Batista fell out of his chair laughing - not surprising since our bookie claims that Miller's odds of even making the top two in Bracket A are considered to be 300 to 1.

Bracket B will feature what appears to be a much more competitive matchup as the rookie Solo Snuka attempts to defeat the veteran Vampiro.  A lot will be on the line here, as the winner will help to set the pace in this bracket.  If Solo Snuka can gain a victory, he will have demonstrated how well suited he is to Singles Wrestling.  If Vampiro wins, however, Snuka will be hard pressed to pull out a Bracket Victory and may focus more on tag team wrestling with his father.  A victory by Vampiro would go a long way towards proving that he's been moping for a reason - namely because he's been underutilized.  Both of these men are extremely talented, so this should be a great battle.

"The British Sensation" Jonny Storm claims that nothing - not a beat down at the hands of The Usurpers, not a crushing defeat at the hands of Edward Chastain, not even being forced to tap out by Wataru Sakata - nothing will stop him from Redeeming the Dream.  Storm has been babbling about this for several months now, and we're beginning to get worried about him - he's definately not thinking clearly at this point, and he's obviously working hurt.  Nevertheless, he has demanded and been granted a match against  "Violent R" Ron Harris.  Storm faced and defeated Harris shortly after New Europe was crushed by The Usurpers and forced to disband, and he hopes that by facing him again he can get back on a winning path.  For his part, Ron Harris is delighted to get a second chance to defeat Storm, especially with him in the condition he's in.

LIW Top Five
Champion: "The Enforcer" Arn Anderson

1) Erik Watts - Erik Watts pulled out an unexpected victory over Frank Shamrock, both knocking Shamrock out of the Top Five and securing the Top Contendership for himself.  Watts isn't the most popular wrestler in LIW by a long shot, but under the guidance of MsChif he won this shot fair and square.  Arn Anderson is reportedly pleased that his next title defense will be "less demanding" than previous.

2) "The Monster" Edward Chastain - Edward Chastain moves all the way up into the spot vacated by his leader Frank Shamrock after absolutely demolishing Don Harris within 5 minutes.  If Chastain can secure a few more victories, he may well be ready for a shot at the top contendership!

3) Wataru Sakata - Wataru Sakata fights his way back into the Top Five after several months of absence.  Already one half of the New York State Tag Team Champions, Sakata is once again proving that he has what it takes to succeed in singles action as well.  A victory over Jonny Storm is nothing to sneeze at, after all, especially when it is the victory that finally pushes him out of the Top Five!

4) "The Animal" Batista - Batista has only been in LIW for about a month, but already he has proven how dangerous he is, first besting top WWE prospect Reckless Youth to earn his LIW contract, then going over the dangerous Randy Orton with apparent ease!  Batista is definately going to be a major player here in LIW, and he is already seen by most as a lock to win the Best of the Best competition.

5) "Superfly" Jimmy Snuka - Jimmy Snuka gains another victory, this time over the debuting Shane Douglas in the raucous Four Corners Match.  Jimmy Snuka is actually undefeated in singles competition, and if some of his victories were over higher profile wrestlers, he'd definately be a candidate for Top Contender Status.  For the moment, however, he isn't quite there yet.

LIW Newsline - 7/27/06

We are three days away from our return to Buffalo, and the card has been finalized.  Believe us when we tell you that it looks like it's going to be an amazing night of wrestling!  Since it's been nearly 3 months since we held a show in Buffalo, the floor seats have already sold out.  There is plenty of room left in General Admission, however, and with several more matches to announce they will likely go fast!  The name of the show has been finalized as well - July 30, 2006 will go down in history as Caged Fury!

We'll get back to the obvious steel cage match in a moment.  For now, however, we are sorry to report that WWE has ordered Randy Orton to end his feud with Cactus Jack because they fear he will be injured.  While Orton has been itching to embarrass Cactus Jack once again, he will respect the wishes of the WWE.  A grudge match between these two men was previously signed for this card, but due to WWE's insistence it has been cancelled.  The booking committee believes it has found someone else with a major beef with Randy Orton, however... none other than MARK JINDRAK!  The Ironman himself suffered a neck injury in his first match against Orton, and though it was an accident, Orton claimed Jindrak as just another legend he had killed.  Jindrak is eager for revenge, and thus we should be able to give him an appropriate chance.  More on that later.

After being laid out by the entire International Thug Syndicate, Simon Diamond claims he no longer wants anything to do with the group... however, he DOES want to make them suffer for his loss.  Accordingly, he has requested a match pitting him and two partners against Too Cold Scorpio and two other members of the Syndicate.  Scorpio immediately announced that Justin Credible and Ricky Reyes would be teaming with him.  Simon Diamond responded just this afternoon, claiming that he had won the support of the most dangerous tag team in North America today, the New York State Tag Team Champions, Dangan!  This six man tag team match should be a rocket buster!

Arn Anderson has requested and been granted a bit of time to prepare himself before facing Erik Watts.  While he claims that Watts is not a major threat, he says that due to Erik's pathetic ring skills it is taking him ages to track down a compilation tape for study.  Since it will only have been a week since Watts won the Top Contendership and MsChif reports that Watts is willing to wait, a huge Four Corners Match will be held instead of a title match!  In this match, Arn Anderson will face not only Top Contender Erik Watts, but also the always dangerous Cactus Jack and the rising star of The Usurpers, Chris "HAIL!" Sabin!  This match could be anyone's ballgame, as all four of these men are quite dangerous!

Enough with the delays.  You've probably figured it out already anyway.  The main event of Caged Fury will, of course, be LIW's first ever Steel Cage Match.  This match will pit "The Legend Killer" Randy Orton against "The Ironman" Mark Jindrak in a match that fans have been demanding for months now!  Orton and Jindrak have every reason to hate each other, and now they will get an opportunity to do some real damage to each other!  And this time, there will be no escape for Randy Orton!  Randy Orton claims that he is eager to put Jindrak right back on the shelf where he belongs, and that The Ironman had better be ready to face someone with wrestling in his blood.  When told this, Jindrak simply grinned and stated "I was born ready."

Matches confirmed for Caged Fury:
* Ernest "The Cat" Miller vs. "The Animal" Batista in a Bracket A Best of the Best Match
* Solo Snuka vs. Vampiro in a Bracket B Best of the Best Match

You'll have to help me out here, who is Solo Snuka? A relation to Jimmy one would guess, but do tel nonetheless.

While I'm here, I'll call some predictions - Batista, Vampiro, Syndicate (but only because their acronym is T.I.T.S.), Storm, Sabin and Jindrak (because TNM is never that predictable).

Solo Snuka is Jimmy Snuka's legit son.

I can almost swear that there is no samoan wrestler in the world not related to every other one. ;)

Solo Snuka is Jimmy Snuka's son, and presently wrestles for OVW as Deuce Shade.  Here's a picture of him in full Superfly mode:
