LIW The Night of Champions - 2/25/06

Critic of the DawnPosted on 03/20/05 at 22:13:08

This card really blew hot and cold.  It had a few extremely good matches, and a few that were absolutely terrible.  For the most part, though, I was very happy with the way things turned out, especially in one of the earlier matches...  I'd say more, but I think that would spoil things.  So please enjoy.

And it's Ricky Reyes!  LIW's newest superstar is one half of the Havana Pitbulls!

What a match to start a night with!  All four men in this contest appeared to be very evenly matched, although Stevie Knight was able to maintain an advantage through a large portion of the match due to his reliance on low blows and other cheap tactics.  Perry Saturn and Simon Diamond, two of LIW's most promising athletes, wasted no time in going after each other, exchanging stiff lariats and suplexes in an attempt to prove who was the better man.  In the midst of all of this, Ricky Reyes (the smallest athlete in the contest) was seemingly overlooked.  Reyes didn't get many licks in, but those he did really counted, as his arsenal of stiff kicks proved quite effective at cutting his opponents down to size.  In the end, it was these kicks which enabled him to gain the upper hand over a tired Simon Diamond.  The Avalanche Brain Buster followed, and there was no way that Simon Diamond was kicking out of that.  What a debut victory for Ricky Reyes!

Rating: ****
(Paul London and Don Juan won the New York State Tag Team Titles.)

We have new New York State Tag Team Champions, and what a match this was!  As if the first match of the night didn't give the crowd enough to be excited enough, we saw the undefeated pairing of Masato Tanaka and Wataru Sakata go down to the extremely talented but relatively inexperienced pairing of Don Juan and Paul London.  Until recently London and Don Juan were mortal enemies, but when that rivalry ended up costing London his WWE contract, the two came to respect each other for their capability.

This match was very interesting, because the two teams involved, despite being similar in size, worked very different styles.  Don Juan kept most of his offense on the ground, using takedowns and suplexes to wear down his opponents.  London mixed things up some with his high energy, high speed offense, flying around the ring faster than anyone could keep up with and almost singlehandedly removing Masato Tanaka (the brawler of Dangan) from the match.  This left Wataru Sakata, a master of submission wrestling, to face off against Don Juan in a fastpaced exchange of holds.  Eventually Don Juan gained a momentary advantage and hit a Northern Lights suplex, and the referee counted three just a split second before Sakata tried to kick out!  Holding their new Tag Team Titles high, Don Juan celebrated with an attractive woman at ringside while Paul London climbed the turnbuckle and basked in the cheers of the appreciative crowd.

(Lance Storm no-showed.)

Lance Storm had to cancel his appearance at this show due to personal matters, and Scott Steiner was the only man available at a moment's notice to replace him.  The match that followed between him and an aged Jimmy Snuka was, to put it simply, terrible.  Nostalgia was about all it was good for, and within a few minutes the smart marks in the crowd were mercilessly heckling both men for their obvious shortcomings in the ring.  After 13 minutes that seemed to stretch for an hour, Snuka mercifully put this turkey to rest with his Superfly Splash.

Rating: * 1/4

Poor Aviv Maayan.  He tries his best, but against guys like Perry Saturn, Frank Shamrock and Kevin Nash he just doesn't seem to stand a chance.  In this match, he actually looked fairly good, taking advantage of the fact that Nash is known as one of the slowest wrestlers in the business for a reason to score some quick initial offense.  Maayan even managed to work Nash's neck quite well with a series of surprisingly effective headlocks.  It was all for naught, however, as he missed a dive to the outside, landed hard, and was promptly almost killed by a HUGE Jackknife Power Bomb from Nash for an easy pinfall.

(Kevin Nash grabs a microphone and rolls back into the ring, pointing towards
the backstage area.)

Kevin Nash: It's come to my attention that a certain young wrestler has been
bragging about how he killed Mark Jindrak.  And I think everyone knows who I'm
talking about.  Randy Orton!  Orton, you may have put Jindrak on the injured
list, but you forgot about one thing.  NOBODY in LIW punks Jindrak out...
except ME!  *I* pinned Jindrak cleanly, and the best he could do against me
when he was fresh was a DQ.  So Orton...  If you want to try to kill a REAL
Legend, come on out here!  Big Sexy is waiting for you!

(Several seconds pass and no Orton)

Kevin Nash: C'mon Orton.  What are you, a coward?

(Orton continues to not appear.)

Kevin Nash: Fair enough... you'd better hope I don't see you backstage tonight!

[El Mephisto interfered against Arn Anderson.]

This match had barely started when New Europe hit the ring.  El Mephisto tried to give Jonny Storm an early advantage by tripping Arn Anderson, but the referee saw it and immediately threw out the match, giving Arn Anderson the victory by Disqualification and making him the new Top Contender for the New York State Heavyweight Title!  Storm pleaded with the referee to restart the match, even ordering New Europe to head back to the locker room, but the referee was having none of it.  His decision was final - New Europe had just cost Jonny Storm a shot at the New York State Heavyweight Title.

[Atlantis, Booker T and Simon Diamond interfered against Johnny B. Badd.]

This was a hell of a match, exceeding everyone's expectations by far.  The International Thug Syndicate attempted to intervene, but because they all appeared to be incredibly sick, they weren't very effective.  After kicking out of each other's finishers several times, Too Cold Scorpio was able to finally get the pinfall with his patented 450 Splash.

(We go backstage now, where an interviewer is trying to gain entry into the
New Europe locker room.)

Interviewer: Excuse me...  I'm here to speak to Jonny Storm.  Please open the
door.

(The door opens just slightly and MsChif slides out.)

MsChif: Jonny Storm is recovering from his match right now, and is not seeing
anyone.  As the official manager of New Europe, however, I can answer any
questions you might have.

Interviewer: I suppose that will have to do...  First of all, how does Jonny
Storm feel about his own stable costing him a chance at victory in the Top
Contender's Match earlier tonight?

MsChif: How the hell do you think he feels?  He's pissed off, but he'll get
over it.  After The Deutschland Destroyer crushes Ron Harris tonight, he'll
roll over old man Anderson with no problem!

Interviewer: Are you so sure that Alex Wright *CAN* crush Ron Harris?  Harris
is a really big guy, and Wright doesn't have a lot of experience facing
superheavyweight opponents...

MsChif: Look.  Alex Wright is going to win because Alex Wright always wins.

Interviewer: You could say the same thing about Dangan, and they lost their
titles earlier tonight.

MsChif: New Europe is NOT going to lose the New York State Heavyweight Title!
It is just NOT going to happen, understand?  Now get lost!  This interview is
over!

The Usurpers (Chris Sabin, Edward Chastain and Frank Shamrock) defeated
Don Harris, Edge and Vampiro when Chastain pinned Heavy D after a back suplex
in 0:18:13.
Rating: ** 1/2

This match was intended to give The Usurpers a chance to prove that they are a real threat, and it did just that.  Don Harris, Edge & Vampiro are three very capable wrestlers, but Shamrock, Sabin and Chastain steamrolled right over them.  Once again, the most valuable member of The Usurpers appeared to be the monster Edward Chastain.  Shamrock and Sabin really have quite a find on their hands with him, as he brings so much power and size to the table that even big men like Don Harris fall short in comparison.  That was exactly what happened here - Chastain used his monstrous weight to pin Harris after a simple back suplex.

("Burn in My Light" hits, and Randy Orton walks out to the ring in a Mark
Jindrak T-Shirt with a mocking smile on his face.  The crowd is absolutely
booing him out of the building.)

Randy Orton: Another legend killed by Randy Orton, this time before it was even
born!  Yes, I'm sure you hate me, but I know that it's only because you people
know that I really am as good as I say!  I do what I promise, and I promised
to kill Mark Jindrak.  And really... a broken neck is pretty damn close to
killing a guy!  People have to learn... and Jindrak learned the hard way that
you do NOT mess with the Legend Killer!  Eating his meals through a tube for
the next seven months, and never being sure if *this* will be the night his
neck fails again for the rest of his career are the prices he paid for his
arrogance!  Because face it...  I've beaten the best!  I've-

(Orton is cut off as "Born to Be Wild" hits, and Cactus Jack limps to the
ring.)

Randy Orton: Aww, Mick...  Look at you.  We've already done this!  I beat you
fair and square in your own specialty match!  Everyone *knows* you're no match
for me already!

(Cactus Jack grabs the microphone.)

Cactus Jack: The name... is not Mick!  My name is Cactus Jack!  Randy Orton,
you coming out here and running your mouth about what happened to Jindrak is
NOT acceptable.  Not only are you spitting in the face of each and every one
of the fans, you're spitting in the face of all the boys in the back!  So on
their behalf, I'm here to make you an offer.  You've done it before... so if

HAPPENS!

(Randy Orton takes a step back, then scowls, gathering a mouthful of spit to
do just that.  As he begins to move forward to once again spit in the face of

Rating: *** 1/4

After blindsiding Randy Orton before the match had even begun, Cactus Jack had quite an advantage in this match.  Orton had already been knocked for a loop, and Cactus Jack just kept hammering away at him as the crowds were on their feet shouting their approval and calling for Orton's blood!  After just 7 minutes, Foley was able to score with the Double Arm DDT for a quick pin, and as Born to Be Wild hit once again, Orton pointed up at Foley, shouting that he had gotten a cheap victory here, but he had just made the biggest mistake of his life!  Cactus Jack simply replied with his customary "Bang Bang!"

[MsChif interfered against Ron Harris.]

This match was not pretty, but it was perhaps the greatest challenge that Alex Wright has faced to date.  Most of Wright's matches in the past have ended with his dangerous Bavarian Neckbreaker knocking his opponents out cold, but Ron Harris was simply too big and too powerful for Alex Wright to maneuver into the proper position.  Harris, on the other hand, was able to hit his Big Boot twice, with Alex Wright barely able to kick out in each case.  Robbed of his main means of ending a match, Alex Wright was forced to think on his feet, using his superior speed to wear down Harris before hooking in a cobra clutch for a quick tap out by Harris, who would likely have passed out within seconds had he not thrown in the towel!  Once again Alex Wright has escaped with his title safe!

I really do need to get acquainted more with these newer indy wrestlers... I have no idea who Ricky Reyes, but he must be good if he could beat Saturn, who was on a role, and Simon Diamond, who always seems to be hovering somewhere around the Top Contendors.

London & Juan beating Dangan was a shock to me! I know that they're good, but Dangan was damn good. Oh well... all good things must come to an end and I'm sure Dangan will see better days in the future.

Storm & Snuka probably would have been sweet. Damn Lance Storm and his personal matters!

Nash killing Aviv... expected... calling out Orton, kind of unexpected... I would say lucky for Nash that Orton didn't come out. Orton would probably put Big Sexy right back on the shelf.

Anderson is the Top Contendor?! Best! It seems to me like New Europe were probably hoping to get Jonny Storm DQ'd. They would not want stablemates to wrestle for the championship. If I were Storm, I would be a little upset as well.

Cactus Jack pinning Randy Orton was good to see. While the match probably should have went a little longer, it was still intense. Let me guess... the fued isn't over by a long shot?

In my opinion, Ron Harris dropped the ball tonight. In a way, he's not to blame... he had a LOT to carry on his shoulders with everyone expecting him to come through as a singles wrestler and even getting "the rub" from Undertaker. He just doesn't seem like a top guy... and rightfully, Alex Wright won the match. It took awhile, but he still won. And I'm glad... now Arn Anderson on the other hand? He's definatly top guy material. I look forward to Anderson's chance at the championship.
Critic of the DawnPosted on 03/21/05 at 15:58:25

This is Ricky Reyes:

Reyes is one half of the Havana Pitbulls, who were the Ring of Honor Tag Team Champions from mid 2004 until recently.  The Pitbulls are part of The Rottweilers, Homicide's stable and arguably the top group in ROH today (they won a Six Man Tag Team Tournament featuring most of the other stables and a few dream teams.)  Reyes is a pretty solid worker, but his partner Rocky Romero (who doesn't work for LIW) is much more suited to a singles career and has a bit more charisma.

I wasn't expecting Don Juan & Paul London to take the titles either.  I guess they just had something that most other teams lack - usually Dangan absolutely dominates anyone they face because both Masato Tanaka and Wataru Sakata are very strong exports.  This time, it was very even, and Paul London especially seemed to have Dangan's number.  I'm pleased by how that turned out.

Nash isn't one of the top guys in LIW, but he does have some credibility due to defeating Jindrak that time.  You're probably right, though.  Orton would probably wipe Nash out handily.

Glad you like Anderson winning the Top Contendership.  Interesting theory about New Europe's reasons for interfering, though.  I personally believe New Europe would have preferred to keep the title inside their stable at all costs, even if it changed hands to someone else in that stable.  Really, though, I think Anderson vs. Wright is a better matchup than Storm vs. Wright, so I'm pleased.

You have to understand, Randy Orton was just expecting to cut a promo tonight.  Cactus Jack essentially jumped him and beat him down before Orton had a chance to warm up or anything.  Orton was basically in his street clothes.  So yes, I think this feud is far from over.  Orton is probably going to claim that the win doesn't count because he wasn't ready, or something similarly silly like that.

Ron Harris has been fairly dissappointing on his entire singles run.  The rules stipulate that he gets quite a substantial push, but he's been so unsuccessful that I may quietly shift that push over to someone like Masato Tanaka.  Dunno.  I have to think about it.  From the looks of things, though, Ron Harris is simply NOT main eventer material.  Considering his stats are absolutely abysmal (60 workrate, 40 charisma), I can't say I'm too surprised, either.

LIW Newsline - 2/26/06

Last night's return to Long Island for The Night of Champions proved to be an extremely successful show, and the crowd was really into the entire card from the beginning to the end despite several dissappointing matches.  Because of the success of this card, and because of certain other happenings which will be made clear in this Newsline, our next show will be in only 1 week right here in Long Island!  So come one, come all, because March 4 is going to be a hell of an evening of wrestling!

Probably the biggest news that has reached us here at LIWrestling.com is that the LIW booking committee seems to be in some kind of contract dispute with Alex Wright.  Wright is reportedly demanding a seven figure contract, and while he is indeed an excellent wrestler and a great champion, Long Island Wrestling just doesn't have that kind of capital to throw around and Wright knows it.  Sources close to New Europe are claiming that Wright is looking for an excuse to leave LIW with the title, and speculate that New Europe may be planning something with a European promotion (FWA seems the most likely) - perhaps the unification of their title with the New York State Heavyweight Title to form a Double Crown of European wrestling.  Considering the stated goal of New Europe is the revival of professional wrestling in Europe, this rumor seems plausible when taking Wright's ridiculous demands into consideration.  With this in mind, the booking committee is scrambling to find a way to ensure that Wright loses the belt before his contract expires.

In other New Europe news, MsChif has stated that Jonny Storm has been impressed with the UK's own "Shining Light" Stevie Knight since his debut, and that they were planning to make him part of the fold.  Stevie Knight, when approached for comment, claimed that "This is a bloody great opportunity to make a name for myself on the international stage, and I'd be stupid to turn down someone as influential as The Sensation."  It seems safe to assume, therefore, that Stevie Knight has become the newest member of New Europe.  With Alex Wright possibly on his way out, this should help to keep them a major force in LIW.

Ron Harris came very close to winning the New York State Heavyweight Title last night, but he wasn't quite able to pull out the victory.  Due to the rumors about New Europe's potential underhanded tactics regarding the New York State Heavyweight Title, the booking committee has decided that Ron Harris should get another shot at New Europe.  This time he will face "The British Sensation" Jonny Storm in a singles match.  The clash of styles in this one should make it very interesting, as Jonny Storm is one of the fastest wrestlers on the roster and Ron Harris is one of the strongest.

In an attempt to take the New York State Heavyweight Title off of Alex Wright before he can potentially head to Europe with it, the booking committee has requested that Arn Anderson wait for a while to receive his title shot.  Instead, the New York State Heavyweight Title will be defended for the first time ever in a Four Corners match against two of the toughest wrestlers in LIW and a newly debuting wrestler.  Who are these opponents?  Well, it appears that Wright will have to face Kevin Nash and Perry Saturn for the New York State Heavyweight Title.  As for the newly debuting man... all we know for sure is that he's well over six feet tall!  Let the speculation begin!

Ricky Reyes is so pumped after his huge debut victory that he has issued a challenge to one of the top men in the locker room.  That's right, Ricky Reyes has challenged CACTUS JACK to a match this Saturday!  Cactus Jack has already accepted, stating that he needs someone to take his anger and hatred out on, and that Reyes just volunteered!  Obviously we won't know how this will turn out until this weekend, but based on Cactus Jack's mood as of late, most people here believe that Jack will spank Reyes like a three year old in K-Mart!

Finally, in an attempt to continue killing legends and to regain some momentum after Cactus Jack jumped him last night, Randy Orton has issued a challenge to LIW Top Contender "The Enforcer" Arn Anderson.  Anderson has accepted this challenge, and even requested that the match be stipulated as Two Out of Three Falls!  Anderson claims that it's high time someone taught Orton some respect for his elders and betters, and he plans to do that by sweeping Orton with two straight falls.  Orton, for his part, is unconcerned, claiming that since losing one fall to him isn't enough for Anderson, he'd be delighted to introduce Arn to the lights twice in one night!

LIW Top 5:
Champion: "The Deutschland Destroyer" Alex Wright

1) "The Enforcer" Arn Anderson - Arn Anderson's victory in the Top Contender's Match may have been by disqualification, but it was still a major victory, and it still leaves him as the Top Contender.  Thus far, Anderson has mainly concentrated on tag team competition, but the singles matches he has had have left him undefeated thus far.  He will therefore have quite a bit of momentum when he gets a shot at the champion, who could be almost anyone considering what is booked for Saturday!

2) Too Cold Scorpio - Too Cold Scorpio stole the show with a fantastic and highly competitive bout against Johnny B. Badd last night.  Since his return to LIW, Scorpio has left little doubt in the minds of most that he is the top high flier in LIW today.  If Scorpio proves versatile enough to face wrestlers of other styles, he may well be in line for a title shot sometime soon!

3) Edward Chastain - The Usurpers' Monster is seemingly all but unstoppable, and has racked up victories against some of the biggest names in LIW already.  He has almost single handedly made The Usurpers the dominating force that they are slowly becoming, and with the right opportunity, could even concievably hold the New York State Heavyweight Title one day!

4) Paul London - Paul London continues to impress, taking the New York State Tag Team Titles from Dangan with his partner Don Juan when it seemed that nobody would even be able to get the job done!  Because he has been concentrating on the tag team division, however, he drops a spot to the still respectable 4 position.

5) "The British Sensation" Jonny Storm - Jonny Storm suffers an embarassing DQ loss to Arn Anderson in a Top Contender's match due to a miscue by El Mephisto, but still has enough momentum and enough influence to hold on to number five by a few votes.  It seems likely that he may fall off the Top 5 if he is unable to defeat Ron Harris on Saturday, however.

LIW Newsline - 3/3/06

We are just one night away from the next show in Long Island, and boy do we have some interesting news for all of you.  First of all, after speaking with representatives of FWA in the UK, it seems that the rumors of Alex Wright planning to leave LIW with the title are indeed true.  Accordingly, contract negotiations with Wright have been called off, and steps will be taken to ensure that he cannot do what he plans.  Because of this major bit of news, tomorrow night's show has been named Wright Must Fall.

More bad news has reached us.  Apparently the "smurfberries" that Stevie Ray, Booker T, and Atlantis of the International Thug Syndicate ate were apparently Holly berries, which are quite toxic.  Doctors have told us that all three are down with such a severe case of food poisoning that their careers might well be over - certainly none of them will be wrestling again any time in the near future.  This effectively ends Booker T's rule of the International Thug Syndicate, and most likely leaves Simon Diamond in charge (unless Too Cold Scorpio wishes to contest it) of the much weakened group.

Diamond has issued a statement saying that he intends to rebuild ITS and keep fighting for recognition, but that he will need to expand the group once again to do so.  Ricky Reyes, a man who is no stranger to working as part of a team, has claimed that he will be more than happy to join the Syndicate, so it appears that ITS is back up to three members.  With the momentum that Reyes brings to the table, it appears that it may not take Simon Diamond long to recapture the power that the Syndicate once held.

In an attempt to get things back on track as quickly as possible, Simon Diamond will team up with Too Cold Scorpio to face Michael Shane & Frankie Kazarian in tag team action to start off the card tomorrow night at Wright Must Fall.  With four of the most dynamic wrestlers in LIW today competing in one ring, this should be a hell of a fight.  Shane and Kazarian have been quickly rising through the tag team ranks as of late, and a victory in this match could well qualify them for a shot at the New York State Tag Team Titles.  But with prestige on the line, Simon Diamond has proven to be exceedingly dangerous thus far.

The Usurpers are looking to continue their path of destruction by making an example out of yet another group of LIW's top stars... but LIW has a surprise in store for them.  None other than the legendary STING will be in the house tomorrow night for one night only to lead a team against The Usurpers.  Both sides have reportedly called in favors from other wrestlers outside of LIW, so this is what the lineup looks like.  Sting and The Harris Twins will team up with the aerial artist Insane Dragon and David Flair to face Shamrock, Sabin and Chastain of the Usurpers along with Chuck Palumbo and Axl Rotten.  Can Team Sting stop Team Usurper?  Find out tomorrow at Wright Must Fall!

Because New Europe's plans have been revealed, the booking committee plans to stack the deck against The Deutschland Destroyer even more by forcing him to wrestle a "warm up" non-title match immediately before facing the three fresh men who will be trying to take his title.  Furthermore, the booking committee refuses to say who he will be facing, so Wright won't be able to prepare for this match.  As the name of tomorrow's show says, Wright must fall, and with the deck stacked against him as much as it is, we are almost guaranteed a new New York State Heavyweight Champion tomorrow night!

Finally, the booking committee has decided that Dangan were such excellent tag team champions that they deserve a rematch for the titles.  Paul London and Don Juan have stated that they would be honored to face Dangan again in their first title defense, because it only makes sense that titles as sought after as the New York State Tag Team Titles should only be defended against the best, and after their lengthy reign Dangan showed that they were indeed the best.  Masato Tanaka and Wataru Sakata have thanked the new champions for their kind words, but stated that they will not be holding back.  Tanaka has gone on record as thinking that their loss was a fluke, the result of underestimating London and Don Juan.  "We will not underestimate them a second time," he concluded.

Matches confirmed for Wright Must Fall:
* Michael Shane & Frankie Kazarian vs. Simon Diamond & Too Cold Scorpio
* Sting, The Harris Twins, Insane Dragon & David Flair vs. The Usurpers, Axl Rotten & Chuck Palumbo
* Ron Harris vs. Jonny Storm
* Dangan vs. Paul London & Don Juan for the New York State Tag Team Titles
* Ricky Reyes vs. Cactus Jack
* Arn Anderson vs. Randy Orton in a Two Out of Three Falls match
* Alex Wright vs. TBA in a non-title Warm Up match
* Alex Wright vs. Kevin Nash vs. Perry Saturn vs. TBA for the New York State Heavyweight Title

Also confirmed for Wright Must Fall are Lance Storm, Octagon, Mikey Whipwreck, Johnny B. Badd, Stevie Knight, Scott Steiner, Aviv Maayan, and Edge.
