LIW Summer Storms - 8/20/05

Critic of the DawnPosted on 01/30/05 at 02:07:38

Some interesting events happened in this card that I'm not entirely pleased by. Still, things are looking pretty solid as a whole, and I liked the way the show ended. The whole format that I've been using with LIW (with the Newslines) has been a lot of fun for me, in that it lets me give a bit more development to characters than is generally practical in a show with as many matches as mine tend to.

...

Yeah. So I'm excited about the next card. You'll find out why soon enough.

Also, it occurs to me that if the "International Thug Syndicate" was officially known as "The International Thug Syndicate," its acronym would be TITS. Hehe. Tits. It's funny because it means boobies!

(Jim Duggan no-showed.)

Jim Duggan no-showed tonight's show without notice, forcing Mikey Whipwreck to step in to substitute for him.

Wow! Things started out tonight with a match that was absolutely brutal in all senses of the word. The four teams assembled here are easily the most dangerous in LIW today, and they proved it in a hellacious match. No team seemed able to gain the upper hand as the teams battled around the arena until, finally, the Harris Twins were able to catch Stevie Ray with the H-Bomb, allowing Ron Harris to pick up a very impressive victory here over a very dangerous foe.

The Harris Twins (Ron Harris and Don Harris) defeated
Michael Shane and Frankie Kazarian when Heavy D pinned M. Shane with the
Big Boot in 0:14:42.
Rating: ** 1/2

This was the debut of the new LIW team of Michael Shane and Frankie Kazarian, and who did they have to face but the terrifying Harris Twins? Even though Heavy D and Violent R were already very tired from their marathon match which started things off tonight, they proved to be just too big for Shane and Kazarian to take. Ron Harris even somehow managed to kick out of the Modern Art before tagging in Don, who ended things with a swift Big Boot to Michael Shane. What impact!

(We go backstage now, where Booker T and Atlantis are trying to talk to a
battered Stevie Ray.)

Booker T: Hey, Stevie! Wake up, Sucka! The match is over!

Atlantis: We suffered our first defeat tonight, homes...

Booker T: ...yeah. But that wasn't your fault, dawg. You did all you could.
But after losin' that match, we needta start planning if we're gonna take the
tag team titles.

Stevie Ray: ...

Atlantis: Hey, check this... I've got a match against Tanaka tonight! Once I
deliver an ITS ass-whooping to him, it's gonna be pretty obvious that we
deserve a shot at the titles!

Booker T: Yeah yeah, that's what we gotta do. So you gotta win this one,
'lantis. We all countin' on you! Right bro?

Stevie Ray: ...

Atlantis: Is he okay, Book?

Booker T: Hell yeah! He ain't been quiet this long in years! I'm sure he's
fine, dawg.

Stevie Ray: ...It'sa me, Mario!

(Atlantis and Booker T stare at each other.)

Booker T: He didn't say that... TELL ME he did NOT say THAT.

Atlantis: I think he said that, homes...

Stevie Ray: Where'sa the princess?

Atlantis: I can't believe this... He landed on his head or somethin'?

Stevie Ray: I'a said, WHERE'SA THE PRINCESS?

Booker T: Damn, I dunno man, she in another castle or somethin'!

Atlantis: So what now?

Booker T: Stick to the plan, dawg. He'll snap out of this. Happens all the
time. One time when we was kids, he thought he was Road Runna for three
weeks. He gonna be just fine...

Rating: *** 1/4

Frank Shamrock did just what the booking committee told him to do, which was to come to the ring and stretch Alex Wright. Submission holds chained together in a lethal chain that not even the interference of MsChif could save Alex Wright from. Finally, trapped in an armbar in the middle of the ring, the Deutschland Destroyer had no choice but to tap out to Shamrock's submission hold.

(We move not to New Europe's locker room, where Alex Wright's shoulder is taped
up with ice on it. MsChif looks concerned, while Jonny Storm paces and El
Mephisto broods. Chris Sabin is nowhere to be seen.)

Jonny Storm: That wasn't good... We need to keep our momentum going, Alex! I
can't have you losing to every wrestler we can't get to throw the match, Alex!

MsChif: You have no idea of how much s**t this puts all of us in. We're on
track to rule this cruddy little promotion, Wright. You hold the gold... and
you lost! What the hell is wrong with you?

Alex Wright: I know, I know... it's like he wasn't even trying to win the
match, he was trying to hurt me...

(El Mephisto shakes his head)

Jonny Storm: That's what he does. You have to-

(The door bursts open and Frank Shamrock strides cockily in.)

Frank Shamrock: Ah. There you are. I hope I didn't hurt you too badly,
because I'm here to officially challenge you for the New York State Heavyweight
Title next month.

MsChif: Absolutely not. You already had a shot at the champ. You won,
congrats, but it's over. You think just because you can beat the champ-

Jonny Storm: -who is just getting over food poisoning, by the way. Bad
sausage.

Alex Wright: I am?

Jonny Storm: Shut up, Alex...

MsChif: Right. The champion was not well, so you got lucky. I'm sure your
victory will help you to rise up through the ranks, but you do NOT deserve a
title shot for such a... tainted... victory.

Frank Shamrock: I thought you might say that. That's why I just told Senior
Referee Ted Blandford to tell the booking committee that I wanted the gold.
After all the crap you've pulled, I expect they'll give me the match pretty
quickly. After all... you don't make the matches. They do.

Jonny Storm: Look, surely we can come to some kind of a deal? You could have
quite a future once pro-wrestling takes off again in Europe...

Kevin Nash was originally scheduled to face El Mephisto here, but had to cancel due to comittments in Japan. After his involvement in the controversial title match last month, however, El Mephisto was conveniently not informed. So after spending weeks preparing for a lumbering but powerful foe, he found himself facing just the opposite in Kid Kash, who dispatched him easily with the Money Maker.

Atlantis came out and did just what he needed to do for the International Thug Syndicate - he took the fight to Masato Tanaka, using every trick in the book to gain and keep the advantage over the dangerous Japanese wrestler, who fought like a man possessed to try to regain the advantage. Even when Atlantis locked in his deadly Atlantida hold, Tanaka refused to tap out, allowing himself to pass out rather than submit.

With this victory, ITS has made yet another case for why they deserve a shot at the tag team titles.

Rico, Lance Storm and Kid Kash defeated
Octagon, Mikey Whipwreck and Mark Jindrak when L. Storm defeated Octagon when
Octagon passed out in the Straightshooter in 0:05:48.
Rating: ** 1/4

Mark Jindrak turned out to be the partner of Octagon and Whipwreck. However, a poorly conceived dive by Octagon knocked himself out, allowing Lance Storm to gain an easy submission victory before Jindrak could even tag in. Jindrak, who dwarfed the other wrestlers in the ring in this match, leaped over the ropes just after the bell sounded and laid Storm out with a hard right hand. Rico tried to charge in with his Sudden Impact kick, but Jindrak caught him and hit the Mark of Excellence, a modified Soviet Suplex. Kid Kash looked around nervously, then headed for the back mumbling something about not getting paid enough for this.

MatchLoser-Leaves-Town Match:
Arn Anderson pinned Lash LeRoux after a power bomb in 0:10:57.
Rating: *** 1/4

Lash LeRoux came out fighting in this very competitive match, but unfortunately he didn't have the strength needed to back up his temper. Once he got away from his high flying offense and tried to outbrawl The Enforcer, Anderson quickly gained control of the match, scoring with the Spinebuster for a nearfall. Too late LeRoux tried to return to his strengths, and after taking just a moment too long to set up a Frankensteiner from the top rope, Double A was able to reverse it into a power bomb for the victory here. With this defeat, Lash LeRoux will no longer be able to compete in LIW.

Arn Anderson offers his hand to help Lash up, but LeRoux apparently wants nothing to do with it. He pauses on his way towards the back, however, then returns to the ring and shakes Arn's hand. Arn pats LeRoux on the back and shares a few words of advice which will hopefully serve Lash well, and then walks to the back with him for the last time.

by disqualification in 0:19:20.
Rating: *** 1/2
[MsChif interfered against Simon Diamond.]

This match primarily consisted of Jonny Storm and Cactus Jack trying to tear each other apart. Each time Simon Diamond would try to exert his will in the match, they would both turn on him and batter him until he tagged himself out of the match. Diamond still had designs on winning, however, and so he broke up the three count when Jonny Storm managed to score the Super Rewind Hurricanrana. Cactus Jack didn't appear especially fazed by the move, however, and moments later he locked Jonny Storm in an illegal choke which he refused to release, prompting the referee to call for the DQ.

New Europe quickly hit the ring, doing their best to pry Cactus Jack off of Jonny Storm, but only when Chris Sabin appeared did Jack relinquish the hold.

(Cactus Jack releases the chokehold and moves to the side of the ring.)

Cactus Jack: So you're the scrawny little bastard that New Europe is paying
to face me? Well, maybe they didn't tell you just who you're dealing with...
Foley isn't here anymore, kid. You're dealing with the sickest son of a bitch
in professional wrestling now... ME. Cactus Jack! BANG BANG!

Chris Sabin: This is nothing personal Mick. Or Cactus. Or whatever you want
to be called. I've always been a fan of yours, so when we lock up later
tonight... it's going to be hard. It's going to be hard to beat someone I've
looked up to my entire life senseless. So I just thought I'd tell you.
Business is business, Mick. After the show, though, I'll buy you a drink if
you're up for it.

(Cactus Jack looks less than pleased by Sabin's words.)

Cactus Jack: Listen son, I very much doubt that you're going to be buying
anyone anything anytime soon. Because when I'm done with you, I fully intend
to ensure that you're having every bit as much trouble breathing as your
disrespectful friend here...

(Cactus Jack gestures to Jonny Storm, who is being helped to the back by
MsChif)

Cactus Jack: ...and besides. Once Don Juan picks up the pieces of Jonny Storm
that I left, I think you're going to be a bit busy with planning a visit to the
barber shop!

Chris Sabin: Business is business, Jack. And my business tonight is to take
you out. So be ready. I'm not going to hold back, and if you do I'll be very
dissappointed...

Scott Steiner's open challenge to a Texas Death match was accepted by Wataru Sakata, who gives up over 100 pounds to the monstrous Big Poppa Pump. While Sakata's martial arts and submissions proved enough to win the tag team titles, in a match against someone as powerful as Steiner they proved woefully insufficient. Steiner's stock has surely risen with this decisive victory.

Rating: **** 3/4

Chris Sabin made his debut here against Cactus Jack, and from the beginning it was clear that this match was going to be special. Cactus Jack laid into Sabin with a fury, showing no sign of being worn out from his earlier match. Sabin, on the other hand, fought back as best he could, using speed when possible to counter Jack's power and brawling advantage, to say nothing of the size advantage that made it impossible for Sabin to pull off the Future Shock. This forced Sabin to improvise, and at length he found a workable solution, trapping Cactus Jack in an armbar. After all the time he had been in the ring tonight, Cactus Jack had no choice but to do what he almost never does - tap out!

[MsChif interfered against Don Juan.]

Somehow after the terrible beating he received at the hands of Cactus Jack, Jonny Storm managed to muster up enough strength to defeat Don Juan here in the main event. Of course, the fact that Paul London (who was sitting at ringside) "accidentally" spilled his smoothy on Don Juan as he was brawling outside of the ring, and the fact that MsChif was doing her best to distract Don Juan both surely played a role.

Still, New Europe not only dodged a bullet here, it has achieved a victory which will allow them to choose the next challenger to Alex Wright's New York State Heavyweight Title. With this victory and Sabin's defeat of Foley, New Europe is still riding high, and the booking committee's best efforts to disciplign them have so far come to naught.

See you next time!

LIW Newsline - 8/30/05

Summer Storms proved to be quite eventful and was attended by more fans than any other LIW show to date.  Long Island Wrestling will attempt to top this when we return to Long Island on September 10, where we will present a supercard full of the best action that we can bring you, and both titles will be on the line.  This show will be called The Gauntlet for reasons which will become clear shortly.

Before we get to that, however, we wish Lash LeRoux the best.  After losing to his former partner Arn Anderson a little over a week ago, LeRoux has managed to land on his feet by signing a longterm contract with TNA.  We wish him the best of luck there.

Back to The Gauntlet.  Because of the actions of New Europe thus far in controlling who could have a shot at the title, the booking committee has determined that it needs to be a bit more proactive with determining who is the top contender.  To this end, LIW will be holding a six man Gauntlet series at our next show to crown the top contender.  Two men will start off in the ring, with the winner going on to face the next man in the series, and so on until only one man remains.  The booking committee is already considering requests for inclusion, and will grant it to those they deem worthy.

The concept of the four corners tag team match seemed to draw quite a bit of fan support leading into Summer Storms, so another is planned.  This time the teams will be Michael Shane & Frankie Kazarian, Lance Storm & Kid Kash, Team USA, and Harlem Heat.  Once again, the team that comes out on top will do a lot to position themselves as major contenders for the tag team titles.

MsChif contacted the booking committee via fax last night, announcing that Alex Wright was impressed by Frank Shamrock's performance against him even though he was wrestling with food poisoning.  As such, New Europe has selected Frank Shamrock to compete for the New York State Heavyweight Title at The Gauntlet.  We smell a rat.  Frank Shamrock has been contacted and told in no uncertain terms that if he throws the match and joins New Europe like El Mephisto did, he will be summarily fired.  Shamrock assures us that he fully intends to win, and that any tricks New Europe tries to pull will not work.  One can only hope.

As soon as the Gauntlet Series was announced to LIW's wrestlers, the International Thug Syndicate began petitioning the booking committee for "Mexico's Most Wanted" Atlantis to be given a place in the Gauntlet.  After some consideration, it has been determined that his performance against former ECW World Champion Masato Tanaka was strong enough that he should indeed be given a shot.  Thus, Atlantis is the first confirmed entrant in the Gauntlet.

As if two title matches and a Gauntlet were not enough to look forward to, LIW is very proud to announce that it has worked out a deal with the Dragon's Gate promotion in Japan for the phenomenal athletes CIMA and Dragon Kid to compete in LIW in the main event of the evening.  They will be facing off against Edge & Christian, which is easily one of the top North American tag teams of the past 10 years.

LIW Top Five:
Champion: Alex Wright

1) Frank Shamrock - Frank Shamrock made New York State Heavyweight Champion Alex Wright tap out at Summer Storms, and in doing so apparently impressed New Europe enough that they granted him a shot at the title.  The booking committee and the LIW fans will both be watching this match closely to make sure that there is no controversy like there was in El Mephisto vs. Alex Wright two months back.

2) Atlantis - Atlantis blasts into the top five with a huge victory over Masato Tanaka.  Not only did Atlantis defeat Tanaka, he knocked him out outright with the Atlantida submission hold.  With a spot already guaranteed in the Gauntlet, the International Thug Syndicate has quite a resource here.

3) Chris Sabin - New Europe's assassin debuts with a huge submission victory over Cactus Jack.  Cactus Jack is considered to be all but impervious to pain, and the fact that Sabin was able to force him to tap (you can count the number of times he's done that in his career on one hand) shows just how wise New Europe was to bring him in.

4) Octagon - Octagon maintains the number four spot despite being knocked out in his six man tag team match.  Octagon remains arguably the finest high flier in LIW today, and has been a fixture in the Top Five for months now.

5) Jonny Storm - Cactus Jack again gets the best of Jonny Storm at Summer Storms, beating him senseless.  If Cactus hadn't gotten himself disqualified, there's no way Storm would have won his triangle match with both Cactus and Simon Diamond in competition.  His main event victory over Don Juan keeps him in the Top Five, however.

Wow... big night for the Harris Brothers.  You have to figure after beating 4 teams tonight (even if one was makeshift) that they have to be the top contenders for the tag titles.

Stevie Ray thinks he's Mario!  That doth rule.  How distracting will it be for TITS?  Hee hee.  I said...

Fuckin' Frank Shamrock.  I hate him, I hate him a lot.  And now he's going to be getting a title shot?  If he becomes your champion, I'm going to kill you with muffins.

Kevin Nash no-shows already?  You seem to be getting a lot of no-shows.

Atlantis gets a big win for TITS.  It's getting harder not to justify a title shot for the Heat.

Lash lost?  BOO!  BOO I SAY!  Arn Anderson is so... uncapable of wrestling.  Stupid TNM.

Cactus Jack loses it and gets disqualified by choking out Jonny Storm.  That works.  But now he's double booked with Sabin.  Argh.

Not a good night for the tag champions, eh?

Sabin makes Foley submit!  Ol' Cactus had wrestled a lengthy match prior, so let's see if Sabin can do that again when they're both fresh.

Jonny Storm keeps his hair, Paul London spills his smoothy, and I laugh heartily at that thought.

Wow... big night for the Harris Brothers.  You have to figure after beating 4 teams tonight (even if one was makeshift) that they have to be the top contenders for the tag titles.
They're definately at the top of the rankings, and should receive a shot fairly soon if the rules allow it.  Not just yet, however...

Stevie Ray thinks he's Mario!  That doth rule.  How distracting will it be for TITS?  Hee hee.  I said...
I was feeling random and odd while I was writing that promo.  Somehow it just sort of works.  Also.  TITS.  Hehe.

Kevin Nash no-shows already?  You seem to be getting a lot of no-shows.
Two no-shows in one evening is a lot, especially since I'm just using the standard no-show seed of 80.  It feels pretty authentic, though, considering this is supposed to be an indy fed.  So no complaints from me.

Atlantis gets a big win for TITS.  It's getting harder not to justify a title shot for the Heat.
Lots of people look like credible threats to the titles.  That's something that I'm really liking about this circuit.  Some guys are clearly a longshot, but because things are unbooked, you're never QUITE sure if the titles are safe.

Lash lost?  BOO!  BOO I SAY!  Arn Anderson is so... uncapable of wrestling.  Stupid TNM.
I was very surprised by this, considering Lash had a higher push than Anderson.  I was counting on Arn retiring, but he didn't seem interested.  So.  He's still around, while Lash goes to TNA.

Cactus Jack loses it and gets disqualified by choking out Jonny Storm.  That works.  But now he's double booked with Sabin.  Argh.
Cactus Jack got a little too hardcore for his own good in that match, allowing Jonny Storm to get yet another win over him.  As for the double booking, it couldn't be helped.  I minimize it when possible.

Not a good night for the tag champions, eh?
Apparently not.  Atlantis was amazing, and Steiner is just a beast.  Sakata never should have accepted the challenge.

Sabin makes Foley submit!  Ol' Cactus had wrestled a lengthy match prior, so let's see if Sabin can do that again when they're both fresh.
Another confrontation between these two is definately likely.  No complaining about Double Booking allowed for the Gauntlet Series, though. ;)

Jonny Storm keeps his hair, Paul London spills his smoothy, and I laugh heartily at that thought.
Paul London borrowed a line from Gene Snitsky after it happened.  "It was NOT MY FAULT!"

*Bows to Eric*  You sir, are the king.
Thankyaverymuch!  Uh-huh!

LIW Newsline - 9/1/05

We are rapidly approaching The Gauntlet which will be held on September 10, and we are pleased to bring you several more announcements about the upcoming card as well as a breakdown of the New York State Heavyweight Title match which will occur at that show. Thank you for all your support thus far, and here's hoping that The Gauntlet proves to be as memorable as we think it will.

Ron Harris is reportedly extremely excited that he and Don have been making such an impact in LIW. One thing he is a bit upset about, however, is the fact that he hasn't had a chance to make an impact in singles competition as of yet. Therefore, he has requested a singles match. The booking committee has selected Mikey Whipwreck as his opponent, and reports indicate that Mikey required a change of pants after hearing of the match.

Though Mark Jindrak has not yet wrestled in LIW (he was never tagged in in his match at Summer Storms), someone in the booking committee apparently thinks highly enough of him that his request for entry in the Gauntlet Series has been granted.

New Europe's MsChif has also requested that both El Mephisto and Jonny Storm be entered in the Gauntlet Series. However, due to El Mephisto's past actions, he has been informed in no uncertain terms that he will not be granted another title shot again in the forseeable future. Jonny Storm, on the other hand, has consistently delivered performances of a high enough calibre that he cannot be denied entry. Thus, the British Sensation has joined the Gauntlet Series

When he heard that Jonny Storm had entered the Gauntlet Series, Cactus Jack immediately demanded entry, promising that he would make sure that Jonny Storm did not become the Top Contender. Because of New Europe's controversial actions in the past, and because that he is one of America's most famous wrestlers, Cactus Jack has also been granted a spot.

Octagon has also requested a spot in the Gauntlet Series, and after some consideration, the booking committee has decided to include him. Octagon is one of LIW's most talented high fliers and a damned good submissions specialist as well, and has been extremely successful in singles action thus far. Thus, he has been added to round out the list of contenders.

Finally, the last entry in the Gauntlet Series is none other than Chris Sabin. Sabin wrestles for New Europe, but has made it clear that his position there is based purely on the fact that they are re-investing much of the championship winnings from Alex Wright into his contract. Interestingly, when we asked MsChif if New Europe wanted to enter Sabin, she told us that it was not included in New Europe's plans yet. Chris Sabin filed an application seperately the next day, and due to his impressive debut match (which many are calling the Match of the Year), it has been granted.

Thus, the Gauntlet Series will include Atlantis, Mark Jindrak, Jonny Storm, Cactus Jack, Octagon and Chris Sabin, with the winner being recognised as the top contender for the New York State Heavyweight Title.

A tag team title match was promised, however Ron Harris' decision to pursue a singles match has thrown a monkey wrench in the booking committee's original plans for a rematch of the finals of Tag Team Turmoil's tournament. Instead, it has been determined that Masato Tanaka and Wataru Sakata will team with Don Juan to face El Mephisto, Jonny Storm, and Chris Sabin of New Europe in a Six-Man Tag Team Match. Word has reached us that Tanaka and Sakata were serious enough about their promise to defend the New York State Tag Team Titles with honor that they have announced that they will be defending the titles in this match. If New Europe wins, they will surrender the titles to whichever combination of participating members that the faction decides should hold them.

Here is an in-depth rundown of the two contenders in the New York State Heavyweight Title match at The Gauntlet.

The Challenger:
Frank Shamrock
5'10" 195 lbs
Signiture Move: Ankle Lock Submission

Frank Shamrock, the adopted brother of former NWA World Heavyweight Champion and WWF Intercontinental Champion Ken Shamrock, is quite a submission specialist in his own right. Known by mixed martial arts afficianados as "King of the Cage," Frank Shamrock brings a lethal combination of stiff strikes and effective submission holds to the tables for this important match. At Summer Storms he proved just how effective they could be when he made the New York State Heavyweight Champion Alex Wright tap out to a Fujiwara Armbar in the center of the ring. Shamrock's strategy of relying on submission holds has proved effective in the past, but he will have to be on his toes, because Wright has certainly not taken his defeat sitting down.

The Champion:
"The Deutschland Destroyer" Alex Wright
6'2" 222 lbs
Signiture Move: Bavarian Neckbreaker

Alex Wright came into the arena at Summer Storms expecting an easy victory over Frank Shamrock, but what he got was a hell of a surprise. Shamrock took the overconfident champion down and stretched him on the mat until he had no choice but to submit to a tightly cinched in armbar. After such a humiliating defeat, Wright needs to come into this contest with a strategy. Wright has both a height and weight advantage over Shamrock, and has an arsenal full of suplexes to bring to bear. He also has a decided speed advantage over Shamrock, who rarely leaves the mat because he is so strong there. Therefore, to retain his championship, Alex Wright is going to have to use every advantage he has. As tempting as it might be to brawl with the smaller Shamrock, that proved a cardinal mistake in their last match. Wright is going to have to use his speed at first to stay out of Shamrock's grip. Once Shamrock has been worn down a bit, Wright needs to target the head and neck of Shamrock with suplexes and the like, softening him up enough to hit the Bavarian Neckbreaker. If he can hit that move, the fight should be in the bag.
