LIW The Crowning - 5/21/05

Critic of the DawnPosted on 01/13/05 at 22:51:40

I'm very happy with the way this card turned out, even if I did forget to make the main event for the vacant title and had to go back and edit it to fix things.  Everything clicked nicely, and I had a lot of fun writing it.  I hope you enjoy it as well.

Rating: **** 1/4

LIW chose to teach Frank Shamrock a lesson here, bringing in one of Mexico's most prolific lunchadores and the former holder of quite a few titles in CMLL, Dr. Wagner Jr.  Dr. Wagner Jr. has a noticable size advantage over Shamrock, which he used to devestating effect, shrugging off Shamrock's stiff strike, powering out of his submission attempts, and just generally outwrestling him.  While Frank's brother Ken might have snapped at that point, Frank simply looked frustrated and kept trying the same tactics, and that ended up costing him as a Wagner Driver put him away with ease.

[Lance Storm interfered against Sgt. Slaughter.]

Sgt. Slaughter impressed the hell out of all of us watching the match when he went toe to toe with Justin Credible - a man much younger than him and in much better shape - and actually seemed to be coming out on top of most of their exchanges.  Granted, Slaughter doesn't have the impact that he once did, but Credible was sent reeling a number of times.  After a few minutes, Credible's partner Lance Storm had seen enough and tripped Slaughter to try to give Justin the advantage.  Unfortuantely, the ref saw it, and a DQ quickly followed.

Edge And Christian (Edge and Christian) defeated El Mephisto and La Parka Jr.
when Christian pinned Parka Jr. after a double-axhandle to the back in 0:19:53.
Rating: ****

Edge and Christian demonstrated the value of teamwork here tonight with a huge victory over El Mephisto and La Parka Jr.  Both El Mephisto and La Parka are superb workers, but the just didn't click very well as a team.  Near the beginning of the match, a miscommunication even resulted in El Mephisto accidentally taking La Parka down.  With errors like this, Edge and Christian were able to wear down their opponents with ease.  Eventually La Parka Jr. began to mount a comeback, even managing to survive an Unprettier from Christian.  That move takes a lot out of anyone, even a wrestler of La Parka Jr.'s calibre however, and just minutes later he fell to a simple double axehandle to the back.

(We go backstage now, where Jonny Storm is pacing nervously in the locker room.)

Jonny Storm: I don't know, Alex.  This looks like a dangerous situation.
People know I'm just here to further my own career for my own purposes.  And
now the booking committee has made it so I can't even team with you...  It's
terrible.

Alex Wright: Ja ja, I know.  Still, I have to compete in the New Europe
Challenge to prove that we mean business.  Do you have my back?

Jonny Storm: You know I do, Alex.  But I still need a partner... who the hell
is going to team with me after all I've said?

Alex Wright: You sound regretful.

Jonny Storm: I'm not regretful!  Every word of what I said was true and you
know it.  But it hasn't won us any friends.

Alex Wright: There are other ways of gaining respect than winning it, Jonny.
There is a saying... "Money talks," I believe it is.

(A passing wrestler stops and turns to them.)

Kid Kash: Did someone mention money?

Jonny Storm: I just might have...  You're new here, Kid Kash... how would you
like to earn a little extra for this show and gain some major notoreity?

Kid Kash: You have my attention...

Alex Wright makes his way to the ring with Buch Dich by Rammstein blaring over the PA system.  When his opponents emerge from the back, however, he looks stunned.  Not only is he in a match against the 450 pound Iceberg, but LIW has somehow scraped together the money to bring in GOLDBERG against him.  Alex Wright looks royally pissed off, and shouts that LIW is trying to screw him again.  Still, he put up a valiant fight that was no doubt helped by the fact that Goldberg seemed to injure his left leg several minutes into the match.  Wright had much better luck against the massive Iceberg, using his quickness and technical ability to good effect against his freakishly fat foe.  Unfortunately, he couldn't seem to put Iceberg away, as he was just too massive for Wright to hit the most devestating move in his arsenal (the Bavarian Neckbreaker) on.  Iceberg simply powered out of the attempt, knocked Wright down, and crushed him with his Ground Zero 2.0, a 450 pound running senton splash.

The Harris Twins (Ron Harris and Don Harris) and Too Cold Scorpio when Duggan
pinned Heavy D with the Old Glory in 0:19:26.
Rating: 3/4*

The Harris Twins and Too Cold Scorpio ruled most of this match... or more accurately the Harris Twins did.  Too Cold Scorpio mostly just got beaten up.  Jim Duggan, on the other hand, looks to have been a good choice of partner for Arn Anderson and Lash LeRoux, as he singlehandedly turned things around with a three point stance, a smack upside the head to Don Harris with his trusty two by four, and the Old Glory kneedrop for the victory here.  The Harris Twins look more than a little angry... and they seem to have set their sights on a target for their anger!  Don Harris grabs Too Cold Scorpio... Power Bomb!  The crowd boos mightily as the twin monsters stalk to the back.  Scorpio, on the other hand, must be helped to the back by a trainer.

Rating: 1/2*

Wow.  When Booker T and Stevie Ray talked about getting revenge, they weren't kidding.  Booker simply entered the ring, chopped away at Mikey for a few seconds, then set up and hit the Axe Kick, knocking Mikey Whipwreck out cold and gaining an easy pinfall victory.  As Octagon tried to rush to his partner's aid, Book took him down with the Book End, and as he struggled back up, Stevie Ray caught him with the Slapjack.  But Harlem Heat aren't done even with that!?!  Booker brings a pair of chairs into the ring... and he and Stevie Ray start working Whipwreck and Octagon over with them!  For God's sake, they're unconscious already!  After a few moments, officials rush out from the back and forcibly drag Booker T and Stevie Ray to the back.  After a victory that decisive, these two men are not going to be pleased when they are excluded from the Tag Team Title Tournament...

Rico pinned Lance Storm with the Sudden Impact in 0:11:58.
Rating: ***

Rico took an early advantage in this match when he basically copped a feel of Lance's tender bits at the start.  Storm, a notorious straight shooter, was more than slightly weirded out by this and tried to back away before thinking about what was happening.  Big mistake.  Rico unleashed a devestating series of martial arts kick and chops, quickly wearing down Lance Storm.  Storm regained the initiative with a superkick which he followed up with a Sharpshooter, but because the referee was down he didn't see Rico tap.  Frustrated, Storm let Rico up, and Rico immediately unloaded on him again.  Another superkick broke Rico's momentum, and Lance Storm went for the Straightshooter (the rolling half boston), but Rico managed to squirm out of it and deliver the Sudden Impact kick, planting Lance on the canvass for a hard earned three count.

(We go backstage once again, where Mick Foley seems to be having trouble
finding a partner who hasn't already wrestled tonight.  Finally, in desperation,
he tries talking to Sean Waltman.)

Mick Foley: Hey, X-Pac...  I've got a favor to ask.

Sean Waltman: A favor?  How about no?  You can go suck it, Mick!

(Waltman hops around crotch chopping repeatedly.)

Mick Foley: You know, it's funny you should mention sucking it...

Sean Waltman: Wha... no.  Do not go there, Mick.  Please!  Leave that alone.

Mick Foley: I mean, for you to be telling *me* to suck it after you and Chyna-

Sean Waltman: Dude!  Shut up!

(Waltman looks around frantically, and gets closer to Mick Foley, whispering
loudly.)

Sean Waltman: Please!  Don't talk about it!  It's embarassing enough!  Chyna
and I were out drinking, and she drugged me!  I woke up the next day wearing
ladies' underwear with a sore ass!  Seriously!  You think I'm attracted to
Wrestling's only REAL man-beast?  She took pictures and threatened to post them
on the internet if I didn't become her lover!

(A brief pause while the entire state of New York convulsively shudders)

Mick Foley: So...

Sean Waltman: I'm trying to put that behind me and move on now.  I was a
serious wrestler once, Mick!  Now everyone thinks I'm a greasy little pervert!

Mick Foley: Everyone ALWAYS thought you were a greasy little pervert, X-Pac.
Besides.  If you're trying to be a "serious wrestler" again, then why did you
release a sex tape with Chyna?  I mean... my wife has been complaining that I
haven't been able to get it up since I heard the announcement!

Sean Waltman: I got sick of being her bitch, Mick.  I mean, seriously, do you
know what sort of sick things go on in her head?  She made me-

(Waltman suddenly stops as Simon Diamond passes and gives him a strange look.)

Sean Waltman: I MEAN... UM... SUCK IT!

(Waltman hops around crotch-chopping once again for a few seconds, until...)

Mick Foley: The coast is clear, Sean.  You can stop now.

Sean Waltman: SUCK IT!  YEEEAH!  SUC... oh.  Sorry.  Anyway.  Suffice it to say
that I stopped playing along, so she released the footage.  Scary, isn't it?

Mick Foley: Very.  Now can I count on you, or should I remind the boys here
about that tape...?

Sean Waltman: NO!  I'll team up with you!  I'll wash your car!  I'll do
anything!  Just please!  Let us never speak of this again!

Mick Foley: Sounds like a deal to me, you sick bastard...

Sean Waltman: I hate you.

Jonny Storm and Kid Kash defeated Mick Foley and Sean Waltman when J. Storm
pinned Waltman after the Sky High in 0:09:53.

This proved to be a very even matchup.  Earlier tonight Jonny Storm temporarily purchased Kid Kash's allegience for this match, and just moments before the match Foley managed to convince Sean Waltman that teaming up would be in his best interest.  Foley and Storm went back and forth to start things off, and as usual Storm seemed to be getting the better of the exchange due to his superior speed.  Foley finally caught Storm with a DDT and tagged out to Waltman, and Storm made a tag to Kash, and things too off.  In the end, Jonny Storm hit his Super Rewind Huricanrana, a specialty move that is blazingly fast but more stunning than impactful.  Foley broke up the count and whipped Storm into the ropes, then Waltman followed him in with the Bronco Buster in a humiliating gesture.  This just seemed to royally piss off Jonny Storm, however, and Storm immediately hit the Sky High on Waltman, which finished him off and brought this match to a close.  Once again Jonny Storm has come out on top of Mick Foley!

(Simon Diamond, Don Juan, Kensuke Sasaki and Scott Steiner are all backstage
in their ring attire, waiting for the ring to be cleared from the previous
match.)

Simon Diamond: I have been an unstoppable force in LIW ever since the league
formed.  Every challenger who has stepped up against me has finished the match
on their back.  And why?  Because every single one of you underestimate what
I am capable of!  "He's just a goofy tag team guy!" you say.  Well, here's what
I say.  Simon Says you are going to step into the ring with me.  Simon Says you
are going to give the match everything you have.  And Simon Says that you are
going to come up short once again, because Simon Diamond is destined to be the
first New York State Heavyweight Champion!

Don Juan: This is my first real shot at the big time.  I've worked my ass off
to get to the level that I'm at now, and while some people... some people seem
to think that I don't have what it takes, I've made it this far!  I will win
tonight, and when I do, I'm going to take my title, and I'm going to shove it
in Paul London's face.  I know he's here tonight...  I know I'm good enough to
win the title.  I don't care about proving it to the world.  I just want to see
the look on London's face when he sees I've won a title worth far more than any
he's ever held!

(Kensuke Sasaki obviously doesn't have an extremely strong grasp of English)

Kensuke Sasaki: I... will kick Simon Diamond... ass!  And I will... win the
title!

Scott Steiner: BOOMSHAKALAKA!  I'm here tonight for one reason only, and that
is to show each and every competitor in LIW how it is done!  I don't care about
titles like Sasaki, I don't give a damn about respect like that uptight fruit
Simon Diamond!  This isn't even personal like it is for that pre-pubescant
so-called "ladies' man" Don Juan!  I don't care about any of that (CENSORED)!
All I care about are my FREAKS, my PEAKS, and the New York State Heavyweight
Title!  And even though none of you here in Long Island are good enough to
carry my (CENSORED) jock, BIG POPPA PUMP IS YOUR HOOK UP!  HOLLA IF YOU HEAR
ME!

(Kensuke Sasaki won the New York State Heavyweight Title.)

What a match!  The four contenders for the New York State Heavyweight Title brought everything that they had to this match, and in the end they delivered.  The match started off with Kensuke Sasaki and Simon Diamond, two men who have been at odds since the first LIW show back in January, and it ended the same way.

Simon Diamond was excellent in this match, controlling the majority of the first half hour.  Don Juan was surprisingly dominant as well, and he was only eliminated first due to a fluke roll up out of nowhere by Simon Diamond.  Of course, as he rolled out of the ring, dissappointed, Paul London was right there in the stands laughing in his face.  Although he was obviously angry, Don Juan was far too tired from the match to do anything about it, and simply headed to the back with a determined look on his face.

After Don Juan's elimination, Scott Steiner was more able to assert his strength because the fastest man in the match had been eliminated.  If Simon Diamond and Kensuke Sasaki had not been able to put aside their issue and team up on him, he might very well have won the match.  What actually happened, however, was Sasaki trading blows with him and absorbing most of the punishment, then tagging in Simon Diamond who hit the Simonizer and pinned Steiner.

This left only the traditional enemies Simon Diamond and Kensuke Sasaki.  Sasaki was in worse shape, and Diamond immediately took advantage of that fact by dumping Sasaki to the outside and using the terrain to his advantage.  When he felt Sasaki had been adaquetly beaten, he rolled him back into the ring, but Sasaki somehow dug deep and found a reserve of strength to make a startling comeback.  A sleeperhold transitioned into the Power Special Stranglehold, and when Simon Diamond struggled out of that, another sleeper was locked in.  Feeling himself begin to fade, Simon Diamond had no choice but to tap, taking his first defeat in LIW and giving Kensuke Sasaki the New York State Heavyweight Title!

As we leave you, Sasaki celebrates his victory in the center of the ring with the title belt and promises to defend the title with honor against all challengers.

We'll see you soon!

*Shudder* The Sean Waltman shtick brought about a lot of unpleasant visions. Still, the whole thing is good for a long running gag, and it's the one way to make me interested in Waltman again. And who the hell is Iceberg? Oh well, good job and *yay* for Jonny Storm. :)
Critic of the DawnPosted on 01/14/05 at 00:56:18

Iceberg is NWA Wildside's own resident monster heel. He's a 450 pound fatty with a taste for hardcore brawling and not much actual skill, from what I understand.

Not sure if Obsessed With Wrestling allows direct linking, but here's a picture if it does. If not... then go look for yourself.

The Waltman thingy was supposed to be a bit on the... unpleasant side. The whole thing is something that everyone (including Waltman himself, I'd imagine) would just as soon forget. Plus the fact that readers are going to squirm when reading that gives me a bit of twisted joy.

Jonny Storm continues his winning ways, and is obviously NOT happy about not competing for the title. He thinks Foley is behind all of this, and is taking every chance to rub Foley's face in the fact that he beats him each time they are in the ring together. I'm liking the way this is developing myself. Should only get more intense at the next show.

Snabbit888Posted on 01/15/05 at 00:41:57

Let me start off by saying how oh so right I was with my prediction of Kensuki Sasake being the champion.  I = the bee's knees

SUCK IT, FRANK SHAMROCK!  I'm not even sure why I've developed such a dislike for him, but yeah, eat a fat one, Shamrock.  Plus I like me some Dr. Wagner Jr., so woo.

Slaughter is so old.  Credible should have destroyed him.  Grrr.  I'm not a big fan of generation mixing on more than a one-shot basis, so though Team USA makes me giggle, I hate that they're so competitive.

Edge and Christian keep winning.  Though I don't know the other teams, with the way they're performing now, it's hard to bet against them in the tag title tournament.

"Did somebody say money?"  That ruled.  Not huge on Alex Wright when he's not dancing, but Jonny Storm rules.

I got a good laugh when Goldberg injured himself in that match.  Alex Wright bit off a lot more than he could ever hope to chew, and thus he gets his ass handed to him again.

Fuckin' Duggan...

Wow... the big grudge FCA match didn't live up to the hype, did it?  I doubt 41 seconds is what you were looking for with that one.  More good character buildup for Harlem Heat though.

Good win for Rico.  About all I can say there.

That Foley/Waltman interview could be one of the more disturbing things you've ever written.  Which is why it ruled so much.  Poor Waltman... I bet he never envisioned his life becoming like this.

And Foley once again fails to get a victory over Jonny Storm.  At least he didn't suffer the fall this time.  I really like Kid Kash too.  Nice to see him get involved in something.

And a quality main event to crown the first champion.  Sasaki should make a strong champion, and it was nice that it ended with him pinning Simon Diamond to win the gold.  An impressive showing by Diamond though, who wasn't even supposed to be in the tournament to come this close.  Ever opportunistic he is.
Critic of the DawnPosted on 01/15/05 at 04:57:44

You did call Sasaki becoming the champion.  Good call there.  I was a bit surprised that he won the whole thing, but given his feud with Simon Diamond it actually worked out quite well.

I'm not sure why you don't like Frank Shamrock either.  Maybe it's because he's not techically Ken's brother by blood?  Or maybe you just hate Irish people... although Frank Shamrock doesn't really look very Irish to me...

I try to keep guys in my database when they're still active.  Slaughter and Duggan still make wrestling appearances from time to time (although not together), so they deserve to be in the database.  After that, it's just random chance that they aren't.  Double A probably shouldn't be there.  I tend to go through and drop retired/dead guys every year, so basically I started LIW shortly before I would have dropped him from the database.

Edge and Christian have defiantely positioned themselves as the top tag team in LIW, and certainly seem like a lock to win the titles.  To be fair, though, El Mephisto and La Parka Jr. don't have a history of teaming together, so E&C took advantage of that fact.

I'm not a huge Alex Wright mark myself, but for some reason TNM keeps telling me to use him.  Who am I to argue with TNM?  I was actually impressed by how well Wright did against Goldberg and Iceberg, though.  The odds were nigh on impossible, but he would have won if Iceberg didn't weigh more than LIW's entire roster combined.  Plus he managed to hurt Goldberg.

I was obviously not hoping for a squash in the Falls Count Anywhere match.  In fairness, though, it puts Harlem Heat over as a monster tag team, and gives them even more to be bitter about.

Rico is doing surprisingly well.  He's actually undefeated at this point (although he's only had 2 matches).

The Waltman thing... was fun to write.  But I felt dirty afterwards.

Foley and Storm are building up quite the little rivalry.  If Foley can't get a victory soon, Storm is going to accomplish exactly what he has promised to by building himself a name at Foley's expense.

All things considered, the last match couldn't have worked out better if I had booked it.  Don Juan didn't win so he can continue his thing with Paul London, Scott Steiner got to look like a monster, Simon Diamond looked strong, and Sasaki won the title by forching his biggest rival to tap out.  Good stuff.

LIW Newsline - 5/24/05

What a victory by Kensuke Sasaki at The Crowning!  For those of you who missed this historic event, you owe it to yourself to purchase the tape and watch.  The first New York State Heavyweight Champion isn't crowned every night, after all.

LIW hopes to build on the strong crowd which attended The Crowning by presenting the first New York State Heavyweight Title defense on June 18, 2005.  This show, called Defending The Crown, will have quite a few significant matches on the card.

The first match we can confirm is Rico facing off against Octagon.  Rico is riding an undefeated streak at the moment, while Octagon just tasted defeat at the hands of Harlem Heat.  Will Rico go 3-0?  Or can Octagon turn his luck around?

Speaking of Harlem Heat, Booker T and Stevie Ray are as upset as might be expected that the booking committee refuses to reconsider their barring from the Tag Team Title Tournament.  When they made the demand, the booking committee told them that they would not budge on their ruling, and that they had better find a partner, because they will be facing three men that their radical behavior has effected - Edge, Christian, and Ron Harris - in six man tag team action!

Jonny Storm has been offered a Title Shot by the booking committee, but he declined to accept it himself, stating that until he deals with Foley, he can't expect a fair shot.  Accordingly, a singles match between Mick Foley and Jonny Storm has been booked for next week.

Jonny Storm did, however, take the contract.  Word has now reached us that Alex Wright has signed it, making himself the official Top Contender for the New York State Heavyweight Title.  Kensuke Sasaki is willing to face Wright, and the booking committee members were impressed by how well he handled their "No Win" scenario, so this match has been allowed to go forward.  We'll have word from the champ soon on how he is going to prepare for this upcoming match.

LIW's Top Five:
New York State Heavyweight Champion: Kensuke Sasaki

1) Alex Wright - Wright has been granted a title shot after injuring Goldberg and very nearly coming out on top against two of the most dangerous men in professional wrestling today at the same time.

2) Rico - Rico remains undefeated after a convincing win over Lance Storm.  Rico's tactics may be questionable, but his kicks are brutally effective.

3) Simon Diamond - Simon Diamond takes his first LIW loss at the hands of his rival Kensuke Sasaki, just coming up short in his quest to gain the title.  With the record he has, however, it's doubtful that Simon Diamond will be underestimated again any time soon.

4) La Parka Jr. - The Son of 1,000 Bones remains one of LIW's most consistently dominant wrestlers.  La Parka Jr. lost to Kensuke Sasaki in the second round of the Heavyweight Title Tournament, but since Sasaki went on to win the title there is no shame at all in that.

5) Jonny Storm - Jonny Storm has been making a hell of an impact here in LIW.  Every time he steps into the ring with Mick Foley, Foley seems to come up short.  Unfortunately, Storm tends to underestimate his opponents, and was consequently eliminated in the first round of the Heavyweight Title Tournament.  If he had progressed further, he would be ranked higher.

LIW Newsline - 5/26/05

The card for June 18th's Defending The Crown has been finalized, and it looks like a doozy!  For those who have attended our past events, this will be our first show outside of Long Island itself.  Instead of our normal arena in Long Island, we will be appearing at a location in Buffalo to give the fans in that part of the state a chance to see live LIW action.

Too Cold Scorpio is irate at being blamed for the defeat in The Crowning's Six Man Tag Team match by the Harris Twins.  Accordingly, he has challenged "Heavy D" Don Harris, the man that Power Bombed him, to a singles match to start the show.  The Harris Twins have shown time and time again that they are extremely dangerous, but Scorpio is an extremely gifted high flier who is willing to put his body on the line to win a match.  This has the makings of an excellent speed vs. power confrontation.

Frank Shamrock put on an excellent show against Dr. Wagner Jr., but ended up coming up short.  Due to his lack of success in singles competition thus far, he has therefore requested that he be assigned a tag team partner.  LIW has selected none other than El Mephisto to fill this role, and booked them in a match against Team USA.  Both El Mephisto and Frank Shamrock need a win to turn their LIW fortunes around.  Can they get one against the dangerous veterans of Team USA?

Do to their ongoing issue, Mick Foley has pulled some strings in WWE and gotten them to agree to allow LIW to sanction a one-time only match between Don Juan and WWE's Paul London.  A confrontation between these two has been building for a long time - now they can finally settle things in the ring.  This match has the makings of a classic, and may just be one of the most anticipated bouts on the card.

LIW will be holding another tryout match where two competitors face off in the ring with the winner being granted a contract.  Who will be facing off?  It could be anyone!

Kensuke Sasaki is apparently honored to be facing an international opponent such as Alex Wright in his first title defense.  Sasaki is reportedly studying tapes of Wright's matches thus far to see if he can gleen any knowledge that will give him an edge over The Deutschland Destroyer.  Alex Wright has elected to remain in the United States until the next show, and is reportedly working out against a number of submission specialists and power-based brawlers to ensure that he is ready to face an athlete of Sasaki's calibre at Defending The Crown.  In particular, he is apparently attempting to improve the versatility of the Bavarian Neckbreaker by learning new ways to transition into it.

Matches Confirmed for Defending The Crown:
* Too Cold Scorpio vs. Don Harris
* Team USA vs. Frank Shamrock & El Mephisto
* Don Juan vs. Paul London
* Rico vs. Octagon
* Edge, Christian & Ron Harris vs. Harlem Heat & TBA
