NDW Week 60 - The Crowning 2005

Critic of the DawnPosted on 12/20/04 at 19:10:33

Wow.  Just wow.  This card turned out amazingly well, and I think the right person won the tournament and picked up the title.  I've got some more to say, but I'm going to wait until after the card to do so.  Until then, please enjoy.

[Matt Hardy interfered against Edge.]

What a way to start an evening!  The Amazing Red and Edge faced off here in the first match of tonight's tournament, and due to the importance of tonight's event, both men were obviously letting it all hang out.  Unfortunately, things started to go wrong when Matt Hardy made his way to ringside and began doing his damndest to ensure that Edge would not advance in the tournament.  Despite this, Edge managed to come back and pick up the win with his always dangerous Edgecution.  Red was obviously upset by his defeat in this match, but in a gesture of respect he shook Edge's hand in the middle of the ring.

Meanwhile, on the outside, Matt Hardy looked stunned as his plans were once again ruined.  Shouting from the outside, he demanded to know what the hell was wrong with The Amazing Red.  Red simply turned and launched himself through the ropes with a Tope Suicida!  Red is hammering away at Matt Hardy here, folks!  "I don't need your help!  You took me out of my game!"  Hardy staggers down the aisle after this sudden assault with Red in hot pursuit!

Rating: ****

James Storm and Sean O'Haire faced off quite a few times last year, when they (along with their respective tag team partners) feuded over the Tag Team Titles.  You could see in tonight's match that they were clearly very familiar with each other, as the match between them was extremely good.  James Storm clearly had an edge in this match, however, as he no-showed last week so as to be as fresh as possible for The Crowning.  Sean O'Haire, on the other hand, wrestled twice.  This edge was quite evident, and Storm was able to outwrestle the battered Tag Team Champion at almost every turn.  After stunning O'Haire with an Enzuigiri, Storm lifted him up and hit the Eight Second Ride, and that was all she wrote.

(Derek Nadel is backstage with Edge and James Storm, who will face each other
later tonight in the semifinals.)

Derek Nadel: Edge, James Storm, first of all I have to say congratulations for
your victories.  But the matches you just won were only the beginning of what
you have to go through tonight.  A little later this evening, you two will
be facing each other in the Semifinals of The Crowning.  Only one of you can
advance to compete for the Global Heavyweight Title.  What are your thoughts?

Edge: I've said it time and time again.  I WILL be walking out of here tonight
with the Global Heavyweight Title.  Matt Hardy tried to stop me, but he
couldn't.  The Amazing Red, one of the best high fliers in the world today,
tried to stop me, but he fell to the Edgecution.  And now I have to face some
sell-out tag team wrestler?  Please.  This is going to be easy.

James Storm: In case you hadn't noticed Edge, I made short work of Sean
O'Haire -  A man far bigger and stronger than you!  I won't take anything away
from you, Edge.  You're a damned good wrestler.  But I am the best.  I am one
half of the best tag team in New Deal Wrestling if not THE WORLD today, and
just a little over a month ago I won a tournament to prove it.  If you take
me lightly, you WILL be taking an Eight Second Ride out of the Tournament,
Edge!

Rating: * 3/4

Coming into this match, many wondered just what Psicosis would have to do to defeat A-Train.  After all, A-Train is one of the strongest and certainly one of the largest men in NDW today, while Psicosis weighs in at less than 200 pounds.  Well, as the shattered tables surrounding the ring attest, Psicosis had a plan, and a plan that worked.  Interestingly, Psicosis has now defeated The Undertaker and A-Train in this tournament.  From the looks of things, we may have the makings of a Giant Killer right here in NDW!

Trent Acid continues his quest for singles recognition with a decisive victory here over Johnny Ace.  Acid has proven himself to be extremely dangerous since being brought in to NDW for Tag Team Turmoil, and if he continues to perform at this level, he just might become your next Global Heavyweight Champion.

In other news, backstage workers report that Matt Hardy has left the building in an attempt to escape the angry Red.

(We go backstage once more where Derek Nadel is with Psicosis and Trent Acid,
who have advanced to the Semifinals and will face each other later this
evening.)

Derek Nadel: I'm backstage with Trent Acid and Psicosis, who are both coming
off of decisive victories in the Quarterfinals.  Gentlemen, you will be facing
each other once Edge vs. James Storm is over.  What are your thoughts?

(Psicosis hands Derek a card, which he quickly reads.)

Derek Nadel: Hmm...  Psicosis says that he has proven himself to be a Giant
Killer with his victories over The Undertaker and A-Train in this tournament.
Compared to men of that size, a joke like Trent Acid should be no sweat.

Trent Acid: Hey!

Derek Nadel: Wait, that's what he said!  It's a prepared statement because his
English isn't very good!  See!

(Trent Acid looks at the card, then nods.)

Trent Acid: Whatever.  I don't really care what that masked freak thinks.  I've
been taken for granted as a tag team guy for what seems like forever.  And
after tonight, when I walk out with the Global Heavyweight Title, that will be
the end of it.  Psicosis will fall just like Matt Hardy and Johnny Ace fell,
and just like whatever clown I face in the finals is going to fall!  I will win
this tournament.  I guarantee it.

The fans are jumping out of their seats as yet another Match of the Year candidate unfolds before them between Edge and James Storm.  Both men battled each other with everything they had, with James Storm getting the better of Edge a surprising number of times.  In the end, however, it only takes one move to end a match, and Edge has proven time and time again that The Edgecution is lethally effective when used at the right time.  With this victory, Edge advances into the Finals, where he will compete for the Global Heavyweight Title!

Rating: **** 1/4

What a match!  Psicosis and Trent Acid both wrestled a hell of a fastpaced Jr. Heavyweight style match, and it looked very even for most of it.  Psicosis managed to kick out of the Yakuza kick and hit a powerbomb onto a chair, but Trent Acid kicked out of the Flying Legdrop and reversed a Frankensteiner attempt into a powerbomb for the pinfall.  Once again the crowd goes wild as Trent Acid advances into the finals to compete for the Global Heavyweight Title!

(We go backstage once again where Derek Nadel is with Edge and Trent Acid.)

Derek Nadel: Edge, Trent, the two of you have done a fantastic job this
evening.  Edge, you've beaten The Amazing Red and "The Tennessee Cowboy" James
Storm to stand here now, and Trent, you defeated Johnny Ace of Overpower and
"The Madman from Tijuana" Psicosis.  What are your thoughts?

Edge: What are my thoughts?  Derek, I'm here, aren't I?  Just like I promised
to be?  At The Big One I defeated Matt Hardy for a shot at the Global
Heavyweight title, and now FINALLY I get it tonight.  I've been wanting the
gold back for MONTHS, Derek.  Months.  Longer than Trent Acid has even been
with the company.  Well, tonight, I'm going to take it.  And I will be the only
Three Time Global Heavyweight Champion in NDW history just like I am now the
only man to have held the belt twice!

Trent Acid: Tonight my mission for respect ends here.  I've showed the crowd
just what I can do, and they've gotten behind me.  They know, just like I know,
that it's my time to shine now.  Nothing personal, Edge, but you've held the
title twice.  I've been dreaming of holding a belt as prestigious as the
Global Heavyweight Title for my entire LIFE.  I think I want it a little more
than you do.

Edge: Is that so?

Trent Acid: Damn straight.

(Edge offers his hand.)

Edge: Well, good luck then.  May the best man win.

(Trent Acid shakes his hand, and from the looks of things they're both
squeezing the hell out of each other's hand in an attempt to make their
opponent flinch.  Finally, they pull apart.)

Trent Acid: I plan to.

[The Crowning Final]: Match for the vacant Global Heavyweight Title:
Edge pinned Trent Acid after a flapjack in 0:39:31.
Rating: *****
(Edge won the Global Heavyweight Title.)

Here is your winner... and NEW Global Heavyweight Champion... EDGE!

Edge fulfilled his destiny here tonight, regaining the title that was stolen from him months ago by the actions of Matt Hardy and Lita.  It was a long night, with three very dangerous opponents, but Trent Acid took Edge to the limits like few others have.  These two men gave everything they had here tonight, they hit move after move, and with the brutality of the main event, it's entirely possible that both of them have shortened their careers as a result.

But in the end, none of that matters.  An exhausted Edge can barely hold the Global Heavyweight Title over his head in celebration.  Trent Acid gets to his feet... and offers his hand.  They shake, then hug.  As the cameras fade out, Acid raises Edge's hand in a well deserved gesture of respect.

Good night everybody!  Thanks for watching!

Match observations:

Match of the Evening: Edge vs. Trent Acid

This was, without a doubt, the best show that NDW has ever put on.  And it is with a heavy heart that we announce that NDW will be going on hiatus for a while.  We have no intention of folding, and all of our wrestlers have indicated their support for the company, but due to the money lost on our Pay Per View experiment at The Big One, we will be unable to run shows until a new financial backer can be found.

Thank you all for tuning in each week for us, and we hope to be back sooner rather than later.

*****

NDW is going on hiatus now that I've run out of Rick's Oldschool Rules.  I've really enjoyed running the circuit, but since I started with the ruleset I prefer to stick with it.  It will probably return once Rick catches up and starts putting out new rules, but that may be a while.  Therefore, I will be pursuing a new circuit - I'll have an announcement about it in a few days.

In the mean time, I welcome your thoughts about this card, and about New Deal Wrestling in particular.  Was there anything you really liked or hated?  Anything you think I need to work on a bit more?  What stood out the most?  That sort of thing.

Thanks a bunch, guys.  I hope you've had as much fun reading this as I have in running it.

I'll give you full feedback soon, but I almost got the whole thing predicted except for the final.  Six out of seven is still a good showing. :)

I think it HAD to be Edge there, after how things have gone over the weeks, it just had to be. That or Johnny Ace, but the whole Overpower shtick ruled the world. Any way you can find to incorporate that sort of thing into the new circuit will be much appreciated.
Critic of the DawnPosted on 12/20/04 at 21:01:23

I like the way the card ended.  If Rick puts out more rules and I pick NDW back up somewhere down the line, I've got something to do with it.  Trent Acid will probably be elevated by his close second in The Crowning.  The Amazing Red and Matt Hardy will have a feud.  Overpower and Team TCW will continue to battle.  And all will be well.  And if Rick doesn't continue his ruleset or I don't continue NDW, Edge's victory here really wraps things up nicely.  He's been my top babyface since week 1, and a victory for him (especially one after 2 ***** matches in one evening) brings things to a very nice conclusion.

As for putting funny stuff like Overpower in my new project... I'll certainly attempt to.  Modern professional wrestling is so inherantly absurd that excluding comedy from it really hurts the overall experience.  It might take a while for me to get a good enough grip of things to get that sort of running gag going, however.  The fact that I pick my roster randomly makes it even more challenging.

The more detailed feedback I promised.

Though Red didn't win, it's good to see that he's going to have some sort of feud and direction now with the Matt Hardy deal.  Red was always just a solid player, but never really had anything set to do in NDW.  It's about time he got in a high-profile feud.

A good win for Storm. He always seems to almost get a singles push and hen not quite be able to get completely over the hump.  Getting to the semis here is good for bumping him up slightly.

Psicosis versus A-Train was the stinker of the tourney, but I think everyone expected that.

Trent Acid beat sentimental favorite "Racist" Johnny Ace.  And the peasants weeped. :(

I know it goes without saying, but Edge has to be the MVP of this night.  Two ***** matches in one night?  Especially after already wrestling one match earlier in the night, so he was all tired and stuff.  But you're right: Edge almost HAD to win this tournament with the way the story went before all of this.
Critic of the DawnPosted on 12/22/04 at 01:21:18

My guess coming into this card was that Red was going to win.  Through most of NDW's history, he was simply a midcarder who could be counted on to deliver an exciting performance, or a tag team specialist upstaged by Funaki's goofy charisma.  I think he really came into his own here tonight, and if NDW is continued sometime down the line I'd like to see how he stacks up against Matt Hardy.

James Storm is an interesting case.  He's been near the top of the card for most of NDW's history, but every time he gets a shot at the gold he ultimately chokes.  I believe he's had more title shots than anyone outside of Edge, and each and every time he's come up short.  As such, he needed the victory more than O'Haire, who just took the Tag Team Titles off of Matt Hardy and The Undertaker.

I was shocked and dissappointed to see A-Train involved in a subpar match.  I mean, who could have predicted it?  I like the credibility that the victory gave to Psicosis, though.

I was pulling for Ace to beat Acid, but Acid's export is really hard for most others to beat.  Therefore, his victory wasn't really a huge surprise.

Edge impressed the hell out of me here tonight.  If I ever had any doubts about giving him the top spot (which I didn't), he proved himself worthy.  Two ***** matches out of three in an evening is nothing short of incredible - even Benoit would be hard pressed to deliver the same.

From the looks of things, if NDW continues Trent Acid has made a pretty good case for getting a rematch as the main event of a show soon to follow.  I wouldn't be surprised to see him rising up to the main event level sooner rather than later.  I'd be interested to see Nana's reaction as well, since Nana owns Trent Acid's contract.
