NDW Week 58 - The Final Approach

Critic of the DawnPosted on 12/11/04 at 07:02:02

Wow.  It's been over 2 weeks since I posted my last card.  You can tell I've been busy, can't you?  Suffice it to say that with my brother-in-law still wrongfully imprisoned by the Department of Homeland Security, NDW hasn't been my top priority.

Yes, I know.  I should get my priorities straight.  ::)

Best of the Best (Edge and Chris Sabin) defeated
Oldschool (Jimmy Snuka and Legend) when C. Sabin pinned Legend after the
Brutalizer in 0:16:07.
Rating: **** 3/4

Wow!  What a way to start an evening!  Edge and Sabin definately had something to prove after their defeat last week at the hands of Matt Hardy and The Undertaker, but Oldschool put up a hell of a fight in an epic 16 minute tag team encounter.  Snuka was wrestling on a level that we haven't seen for many years, and even went so far as to hit a Superfly Splash from the apron onto Edge several minutes into the match.  Edge and Sabin managed to come back from this early disadvantage, however, and hit the Brutalizer (a Spike DDT) for the victory.  If there were any doubts about Edge and Sabin's tag team skills, they have been laid to rest.

Coming up later tonight, Slash will face his former partner New Jack in a singles match.  Kevin Nash, Shane Douglas and Johnny Ace of Overpower will face Dusty Rhodes and America's Most Wanted from Team TCW with Chuck Palumbo as the special guest referee.  The Basham Brothers will face off against Ron Simmons and Balls Mahoney, and Damian 666 will face The Undertaker.  Sean O'Haire will also take on Matt Hardy - this match and Undertaker/Damian will be an interesting preview of next week's Tag Team Title match.  Finally, in two Crowning Qualifying Matches, A-Train will face Funaki, and The Undertaker will face Psicosis!  Stay tuned!

(Edge remains in the ring after the others leave, and gestures for a microphone
as the crowd cheers.)

Edge: Thank you!  Tonight Chris Sabin and I came out here to steal the show,
and that's just what we did.  We proved that we really are the Best of the
Best!

(The crowd pops)

Edge: And that's great and all.  But there's something more important on the
horizon.  The Global Heavyweight Title!  I'm the only man in NDW's short
history to hold the title twice, which is why I'm the favorite to win the
tournament!  None of the other contenders so far have even held the belt once!
That's why I'm a lock to win the title once again!  So once I am crowned, and
once I hoist my Global Heavyweight Title belt high for the third-

(Edge is interrupted as Matt Hardy's music hits and the Sensai of Mattitude
makes his way to the ring with Lita.)

Matt Hardy: Edge, Edge, Edge...  What you're neglecting to tell people is that
soon both The Undertaker and Myself will be in the Tournament!  And after the
beating you took last week at our hands... well... your chances don't look too
hot!  Of course, I'm sure you have trouble grasping that fact, as intelligence
isn't one of your strongest Mattributes!

(Edge takes a step forward and jaws with Hardy.)

Edge: Isn't it a bit early for you to be threatening me?  You and your butt
buddy haven't even qualified for the Tournament yet!

(Lita gasps, and Matt looks furious.)

Matt Hardy: You'll pay for that, Edge.  Looks like after all our fights I still
haven't beaten any respect into you!  And I will!

(The crowd pops in expectation of an upcoming confrontation.)

Matt Hardy: But not now.  Not today.  I've already got a match tonight against
Sean O'Haire, so you'll just have to wait!  But mark my words, Edge!  You won't
be walking out of The Crowning with the Global Heavyweight Title.  I guarantee
it!

Another amazing match!  This may not have been a hardcore match, but both Slash and New Jack treated it like it was.  With Billy Gunn's help, Slash was able to go toe to toe with the Original Gangsta, but once tables became involved it was all over.  After being put through not one but two tables and coming back for more, Slash finally went down after New Jack borrowed a page from Jeff Jarrett's book and smashed a guitar over his head to set up the Diving Headbutt!  Both men are bleeding heavily!  This feud clearly isn't even close to being over!

[Head Hunter #1 interfered against Kevin Nash.]

This was Kevin Nash's first match back in NDW after many months away, to say nothing of his first match as the new leader of Overpower.  And in this match with Chuck Palumbo as the special guest referee, he might have been expecting many things.  What he wasn't expecting was a stiff Spinebuster from a huge islander on the outside of the ring, and as Chuck Palumbo didn't see it, Nash was counted out.  The Head Hunters descend on the fallen Nash as Rhodes and America's Most Wanted face down Ace and Douglas!  Overpower is in serious trouble!  But wait!  Here come A-Train and Ahmed Johnson to even the odds!  Chuck Palumbo looks back and forth between the two brawling sides as if trying to decide between them... then simply slides out of the ring and leaves them to their battle.  Eventually, NDW officials manage to seperate them.  This has got to stop!

(The Amazing Red is backstage.)

Red: I've had a long and difficult road here in NDW...  As one of the smallest
men on the roster, I've always been the underdog in every match I've had here.
But somehow, time after time I come out on top.  Maybe I'm too fast for my
opponents.  Maybe I'm just better than them.  I don't know.  What I do know
is that the world is ready for a high-flying champion!  Historically, men like
me, who use a high risk style, have always seemed to come up short in World
Title shots.  Well, in two weeks at The Crowning, I intend to reverse that
trend.  I intend to win the Global Heavyweight Title and prove that while I
may not be the biggest, I'm definately the best!

The Basham Brothers (Doug Basham and Danny Basham) defeated
Ron Simmons and Balls Mahoney when Danny Basham pinned R. Simmons after
a flying forearm in 0:13:08.
Rating: ** 3/4

This was nothing more than a huge brawl between two hard hitting teams.  Simmons and Mahoney had a size and strength advantage here, but the Basham Brothers had wrestling skill and conditioning on their side.  In the end, they were able to leverage their youth into a victory here, essentially playing rope-a-dope until Simmons and Mahoney tired themselves out, then taking them apart with strikes and submissions.  This victory will definately help The Basham Brothers to advance in the Tag Team Division.

Rating: * 1/2

"The Beast of the Apocalypse" Damian 666, the Hardcore Lunchadore, was confident coming into this match.  Confident that he could defeat the Prince of Darkness.  Unfortunately for him, The Undertaker took ever hit from Damian without flinching, then leveled his opponent with a quick Choke Slam From Hell for an easy victory in 2 minutes.  This victory allows The Undertaker to be fairly fresh when he has to face off against Psicosis later tonight in our Main Event.  Damian and O'Haire, on the other hand, will have to do better than this next week if they want to win the Tag Team Titles.

(We go now to a taped segment filmed in the arena before tonight's show.)

Billy Gunn: The Crowning is probably one of the most important things I've seen
since coming to NDW.  And the neat thing is that every single wrestler on the
roster is going to have a chance to enter the tournament.

Ron Killings: The NDW fans will see the Truth next week, as I take my place in
The Crowning by winning the Battle Royal!

Marcos: I've come a long way from being just a member of the Ring Crew with
big dreams.  New Deal Wrestling has let me live my dream of being a
professional wrestler!  And next week, when I win the Battle Royal, I'll show
everyone what it means to me!

Jim Duggan: HOOOOOOOOOOOOO!  I'm gonna win the Battle Royal, and then I'll take
the Title at The Crowning for America!  USA!  USA!  USA!

Nana: I've made a lot of mistakes here in NDW.  I disgraced myself and my
country, and I've paid for all my mistakes.  NDW no longer recognises me as a
Prince.  When I win the Battle Royal, however, I will win back the respect I
have lost, and when I have gold around my waist, I will be the kind of hero
that my Country needs!

Trent Acid: I haven't really had much of a chance in NDW yet.  But now that I'm
back, I intend to make the most of this.  People have written me off as nothing
more than a victim for Matt Hardy next week.  And Matt Hardy has underestimated
me.  We'll see if he still does after I kick some sense into him!

Insane Dragon: Has it been a year already?  My finest hour came last year when
I won the Battle Royal and entered The Crowning as a wildcard.  I intend to
repeat that this year, but this year I *will not* stop until I hold the Global
Heavyweight Title!

Head Hunter #2: (Simply glares at the camera, then pointedly pats his TCW Tag
Team Championship belt)

[Lita interfered against Sean O'Haire.]

What a train wreck!  This was a fairly even match for most of the contest, but when O'Haire started to gain the advantage, things got a bit hairy.  First Lita distracted the official after O'Haire hit the Widowmaker, then she actually interfered with a chairshot, which prompted Nidia to grab a chair of her own and rush in in defense of her man.  After several chairshots by both, the referee, who had been knocked down several minutes earlier, recovered in time to see Nidia and her chair.  The DQ followed, giving Matt Hardy a victory here.  Will he be in any position to both qualify for The Crowning and defend his title next week after such a beating, however?

After a fairly short and decisive contest, A-Train hits his Derailer on Funaki, assuring his victory and a spot in The Crowning for Overpower.  Funaki, for his part, looks quite dissapointed, but raises a jubilant A-Train's hand for the victory here... only to grimace, as A-Train apparently smells very very bad.

Dementia had a vested interest in The Future losing, so perhaps that's why they chose to interfere here tonight, costing The Future what would surely have been a victory after Xavier hit The 450.  Most of this match was simply Briscoe and Red outwrestling The Future, however.  Beckett somehow kicked out of the InfraRed, but as he struggled to his feet, Red took him right back down with a High Speed Sunset Flip for the victory here in another excellent match.

HUGE upset!  Psicosis takes advantage of the fact that this was The Undertaker's second match this evening by putting 'Taker through a table and just generally wrestling circles around him.  After administering a short beating, Psicosis took a gamble which payed off bigtime by going for his Flying Legdrop.  Three seconds later, and Psicosis was in The Crowning 2005!

Moments later, an irate Undertaker sits up, gains his feet, and grabs an unsuspecting Psicosis by the throat!  Choke Slam From Hell!  The Undertaker may have lost tonight, but he certainly made an impact!  And we are out of time!

Match observations:

Match of the Evening: Best of the Best vs. Oldschool

Six wrestlers have now qualified for The Crowning, where the new Global Heavyweight Champion will be determined in a one night tournament.  So far, Edge, The Amazing Red, "The Tennessee Cowboy" James Storm, Sean O'Haire, A-Train, and "The Madman From Tijuana" Psicosis will be in action for the tournament.  Only two openings remain to be filled.  And next week, both of these slots will be determined.

The Undertaker and Matt Hardy are reportedly furious that Undertaker had to wrestle two matches this week and consequently lost his spot in the Crowning.  Furthermore, they are worried that they may lose their tag team titles due to Matt Hardy also wrestling in a Qualifying Match that night.  Therefore, they have demanded that the evening start with a match between Dementia and The Basham Brothers, who proved very impressive this week or else they would refuse to defend their titles.  In the interest of fairness, NDW has granted their request.

The match that is causing The Ultimate Alliance so much nervousness is, of course, Matt Hardy's Qualifying Match against Trent Acid next week.  Trent Acid remains an unproven commodity in NDW, so Matt Hardy is more worried that this will wear him down than over his ability to win.  Acid, on the other hand, would love to make his name at Hardy's expense.

In six man tag action, Billy Gunn, Slash and Jay Briscoe will be facing New Jack and The Future in what could be a very interesting battle.  Will New Jack and Slash be able to keep it in the ring here next week?  Tune in and find out!

Also next week, Shane Douglas and Johnny Ace of Overpower will team up against America's Most Wanted, who will be representing Team TCW.  Once again, Chuck Palumbo, the man who these teams are fighting over, will be the special guest referee.  Who will come out on top?  And will Palumbo finally choose a side?  If so, which one will it be?

A-Train and Ahmed Johnson of Overpower will face Flying Tigers one final time next week.  These two teams have faced off a number of times in the past, and after the Qualifying Match between A-Train and Funaki, they both agreed that a match for old times sake would be worthwhile.  It may be a very long time before you see this match again, so don't miss it!

In the first of our two main events next week, The Ultimate Alliance will defend the Global Tag Team Titles against Dementia.  Both of these teams will see some action prior to the match itself, so anything could happen here!  Will O'Haire and Damian win gold?  Or are Hardy and 'Taker too much for them?

Finally, the final slot in The Crowning will be filled by the winner of a Battle Royal!  Confirmed for this Battle Royal are The Head Hunters, Chuck Palumbo, Insane Dragon, Dusty Rhodes, Ron Simmons and Balls Mahoney, Oldschool, Kevin Nash, Johnny Ace, Ahmed Johnson, Shane Douglas, Slash, Jay Briscoe, Nana, Jim Duggan, Damian 666, Marcos, Ron Killings, The Basham Brothers, Billy Gunn, Chris Harris, The Future and Chris Sabin.  There are some big names in this Battle Royal as well as several former Global Heavyweight Champions.  Who will emerge victorious?

There's only one way to find out!  See you next week!

I gotta go with Chris Sabin in the battle royal. You got a few alliances in there that could prove to be their own downfall caring more about the number game then their own well being.

Since I run my circuit unbooked, your guess as to the winner is as good as mine.  If I had to pick a winner, I'd say... hmm...  Ron Killings.  He's really been on quite a tear lately, and I think a victory in the Battle Royal and a spot in The Crowning would help to elevate him as a major contender in the singles division.

What you gotta consider though is you have quite a few wrestlers double booked and it takes stamina to last in the ring that long.

I'm gonna say Dusty Rhodes or one of the Headhunters knowing TNM.
Critic of the DawnPosted on 12/13/04 at 16:51:05

That's a good point.  Both of the Battle Royals in NDW up to this point have ended with fairly inocuous midcarders winners.  Insane Dragon of all people won the first one, and Julio Dinero won the Rumble In the Bronx, forcing me to push him to the top.

So yeah, someone like Dusty or The Headhunters wouldn't be that much of a surprise.  Thankfully, if say, Head Hunter #2 won the Battle Royal, he still has to go through three other men before becoming champion.  So it's unlikely that if a jobber wins he's getting the gold.

Not to brust your hope bubble but just you saying that will make one of the headhunters world champion.

TNM is known to do just what you don't wan't. ;D

Good luck Headhunter 2#!
