NDW Week 53 - Tag Team Turmoil 2005: Night 1

Critic of the DawnPosted on 10/05/04 at 09:45:30

There were some very irritating choices for who wouldn't renew their contracts after last week's card, and I was worried that it might end up hurting the show, but actually this ended up being the highest rated show NDW has ever held, and I think I can explain away all the annoying releases without a problem.  It also should help me to build for my next major show, which will be The Crowning 2005.  But I'm getting ahead of myself.  Please enjoy the card.

when Duggan pinned B. Mahoney with the Old Glory in 0:08:13.
Rating: -1/2*

Can anything stop Team USA?  Since coming to NDW several weeks ago, Sgt. Slaughter and Jim Duggan have had incredible success as a tag team despite foundering in singles action.  Clearly these veterans are able to bring years of experience to bear and cover each other's weaknesses to a degree which the younger teams in NDW are having trouble anticipating.  The dangerous new pairing of Ron Simmons and Balls Mahoney became the team's latest set of victims when Mahoney couldn't kick out of Duggan's Old Glory Kneedrop.

Rating: *** 1/4
[Nunzio interfered against New Jack.]
[Shane Douglas and Johnny Ace interfered against Billy Gunn.]

Billy And Chuck just barely eke out a victory here over Hardcore Hell, but it's obvious that Gunn did so at the expense of his own health, as he required assistance from Chuck Palumbo, Nunzio, and the referee to make it to the back after what appears to be a fairly serious leg injury.

Meanwhile, back in the ring, New Jack is furious that Slash didn't even try to break up the pin.  Slash protests that the powerslam came out of nowhere... and is laid out by New Jack with a right hand!  New Jack has snapped!  He's beating Slash bloody outside of the ring!  There's a chairshot to the head!  Slash is down and out, lying helpless in a pool of his own blood on the floor at ringside... and New Jack isn't finished!  The Original Gangsta climbs to the top turnbuckle and leaps down onto him with a Diving Headbutt!  It looks like both teams may have seen an injury from this match!

Flying Tigers (Red and Funaki) defeated Overpower (A-Train and Ahmed Johnson)
when Red pinned A-Train after the Red Star Press in 0:15:37.
Rating: * 3/4

Flying Tigers win!  Despite the huge power advantage of Overpower's A-Train and Ahmed Johnson, Red and Funaki had the speed and teamwork necessary to isolate A-Train from his partner.  When The Amazing Red's InfraRed failed to pick up the expected victory, Red simply followed it up with a Red Star Press.  Ahmed Johnson tried to break up the pinfall, but Funaki flew off the top with a flying dropkick and laid him out as the three was counted.  Flying Tigers advance!

America's Most Wanted (James Storm and Chris Harris) defeated
The Undertaker and Insane Dragon when C. Harris pinned Undertaker with the
Catatonic in 0:02:19.
Rating: ***

The Undertaker arrived, announcing that his partner was... Insane Dragon!

Unfortunately, this didn't seem to do 'Taker any favors, as he was quickly caught in a Catatonic by Chris Harris and pinned in just over 2 minutes.  Quite a tough break for The Prince of Darkness, who is quite obviously not happy with the results of his partnership with Dragon.

(We move backstage, where Overpower prepares in its locker room.  Ahmed Johnson
and A-Train burst in, looking annoyed.)

A-Train: Dammit... Those little flippy bastards have been a pain in my furry
steam powered backside ever since we came to New Deal Wrestling!

Ahmed Johnson: AUGH NAWGH!  GAWG DAUGHMAH!

(Johnny Ace looks up as Ahmed Bellows, then blinks.)

Johnny Ace: Wh-

Shane Douglas: Oh (CENSORED), don't (CENSORED) start that (CENSORED) racist
(CENSORED) again, Ace.

Johnny Ace: I didn't hear... hey, wait!  I didn't even say anything any you
just assumed I was going to say I couldn't understand Ahmed!

A-Train: Well, you were, weren't you?

Johnny Ace: Ye... NO!  I wasn't!  I was just going to offer to get Ahmed
something from catering to make up for the misunderstanding last week.

Ahmed Johnson: THAWG YAUGH!

Johnny Ace: Er... You're welcome.  I think.

(Ahmed Johnson fidgets)

Shane Douglas: He was asking you where the bathroom was, you (CENSORED) racist
mother(CENSORED) (CENSORED) (CENSORED)-(CENSORED)stain!

(Johnny Ace sighs and points, then heads toward the catering area)

A-Train: Do you talk to your mother with that mouth, Shane?

Shane Douglas: (CENSORED) you, sasquatch (CENSORED)!

A-Train: (Quietly) I'm not a sasquatch, I'm a locomotive...

(Julio Dinero enters, looking very excited.)

Julio Dinero: This is a historic night for Overpower!

A-Train: Isn't that "an historic night?"

Julio Dinero: What?

Shane Douglas: God(CENSORED) dammit, not you too...

(Julio Dinero stares blankly at Shane Douglas, then smacks him upside the head)

Julio Dinero: Shut up while the champ is talking, Franchise.  Anyway, as I was
saying before I was so rudely interrupted, this will be a historic night-

A-Train: "An historic night."

Ahmed Johnson: HAWGH RAUG!  EEGH AHN HAUSTAUYGHK NAUGH!

Julio Dinero: AN HISTORIC NIGHT. Fine!   For Overpower.  Because I have total
confidence that you and Johnny Ace will win the tournament.  Having A-Train and
Ahmed fall in the opening round is a setback, but you two are the enforcers of
the group.  Ace and Douglas are the tag team specialists.  So they're facing
Best of the Best.  Big deal.  Edge and Sabin hardly ever team up anyway, so
they're nothing but a paper tiger.

(Julio Dinero pauses)

Julio Dinero: Where is Johnny Ace, anyway?

A-Train: He's getting Ahmed Johnson some food.

Julio Dinero: That's nice of him...

(Julio Dinero nods absentmindedly, then suddenly realizes he wasn't finished)

Julio Dinero: Oh!  Tonight is also important for another reason!  After losing
the title to me, Bob Sapp has decided to return to Japan!  That means I've run
one of the most dangerous professional wrestlers in the business out of New
Deal Wrestling, which brings me one step closer to the greatness that is my
destiny!  And tonight, after the end of the first round, I'm going to give him
one more defeat at my hands.  Sapp already fears the power of the dollar.  It
should be simple to ensure that he never returns!

(A-Train, Ahmed Johnson, and Shane Douglas applaud.)

Julio Dinero: I have the power of the dollar!  I am the Global Heavyweight
Champion!  And my destiny will be mine!

(Just then, Johnny Ace returns with a plate full of food - fried chicken,
cornbread, and a big juicy slice of watermelon.)

Johnny Ace: Did I miss anything?

(The others just stare, and Shane Douglas curses under his breath in disgust.)

Johnny Ace: What!?!

Triangle Match:
Sean O'Haire defeated Damian 666 and Insane Dragon when O'Haire pinned I. Dragon
with the Widowmaker in 0:13:19.
Rating: ** 1/4

A brief triangle match broke up the steady flow of tag team contests, and after a solid exchange among the three participants, Sean O'Haire was able to score his Widowmaker on an already battered Insane Dragon for the victory.  Damian 666 chose not to break the count out of respect for his tag team partner, perhaps in the hopes that they might improve their standings after the tournament is over.

The Future (Chance Beckett and Xavier) defeated
The Basham Brothers (Doug Basham and Danny Basham) when Beckett pinned
Doug Basham with the Chance Encounter in 0:21:00.
Rating: ** 3/4

The Future dominated this match as expected, but The Basham Brothers proved far more resiliant than had been expected, and though they didn't gain much ground, they pressed The Future to a degree they haven't been pressed in a long time.  This match very nearly went to a time limit draw, but the official ruled that the match should be given five more minutes for a decisive winner to emerge.  This proved to be more than enough, as Chance Beckett scored with his Chance Encounter after just 1 more minute, advancing The Future to the Quarterfinals.

The winners are Overpower. Time of match: 0:15:19

Overpower (Johnny Ace and Shane Douglas) defeated
Best of the Best (Edge and Chris Sabin) when Douglas pinned C. Sabin with the
Franchiser in 0:15:19.
Rating: *** 3/4

Overpower did just what they said here, taking advantage of the fact that Edge and Chris Sabin only rarely team up to defeat them when either Edge or Sabin could probably defeat either of them in singles action.  A stiff Franchiser to Sabin secured the victory here.

That means that thus far, the quarterfinals will be Team USA vs. Billy & Chuck (if Billy is able to compete), Flying Tigers will face America's Most Wanted, and The Future will face Overpower.  This has the potential to be extremely interesting...

Ron Killings and Psicosis defeated Oldschool (Legend and Jimmy Snuka) when
Psicosis pinned J. Snuka after the Flying Legdrop in 0:16:55.
Rating: ****

Legend and Jimmy Snuka, now competing under the tag team name Oldschool, have been on a hell of a tear as of late, pushing their way up through the rankings against all opposition.  It was thus quite unexpected that the pairing of Ron Killings and Psicosis, a team with much less impressive fortunes, ended up pulling out a decisive victory here.  The match went back and forth until Truth laid out Snuka with his ax kick.  Psicosis quickly capitalized, flying across the ring with a Flying Legdrop to the back of Snuka's head for a quick pinfall victory.

Project Wunderkind (Alex Wright and Jay Briscoe) defeated Nana and Trent Acid
when A. Wright pinned Nana after the Wonderweapon in 0:09:30.
Rating: *** 1/2

Project Wunderkind worked well here tonight, dominating Nana and Trent Acid... or more specifically dominating Nana.  Acid put up a hell of a fight, but Nana just seemed to be off his game tonight, scoring only one or two moves and otherwise beaing beaten silly by both Jay Briscoe and Alex Wright.  In the end, Briscoe knocked Acid off the apron, tagged in Alex Wright, and the duo hit the Wonderweapon to advance to the quarterfinals later tonight.

(The Undertaker, furious over his quick defeat tonight, storms through the
backstage area.  The first convenient targets for his ire appear to be Deranged
and Marcos, who are shooting the breeze because they didn't qualify for the
tournament.  Marcos is suddenly knocked down by a vicious big boot, and
Deranged begins to fight back, only to be caught with a chokeslam for his
trouble.)

The Undertaker: Tonight was an embarassment.  I can see that I overestimated
Insane Dragon when I chose him as my partner this evening.  Fortunately, I was
not the only one to face an unpleasant night.  Nana, it appears that our fates
are still tied together.  Therefore, I give you this warning.

(The Undertaker picks up the fallen Deranged and carefully climbs on a nearby
table, setting him up for a devestating Tombstone.  Marcos stirs, sees his
partner in trouble, and scrambles to save him... only to be met with a Twist
of Fate from nowhere that knocks him out cold.  Matt Hardy stares up at the
Undertaker, but makes no move to interfere as 'Taker drives Deranged through
the table with a Tombstone.  As the Undertaker begins to stand, Matt Hardy
offers his hand.)

Matt Hardy: I hear that the partnership you tried to start didn't work out
too well either...  Perhaps you'd be interested in trading up to a slightly
more competent ally?

The Undertaker: You have my attention...

[Bob Sapp's Farewell Match]:
Bob Sapp made Julio Dinero submit to the torture rack in 0:14:20.
Rating: ***
[Alexis Laree interfered against Bob Sapp.]

Bob Sapp departs NDW for Japan once again with one last high profile victory.  Despite the interference of Alexis Laree, Sapp was able to power out of Dinero's STO and lock in a torture rack which Dinero had no choice but to submit to.   In his NDW stay, Sapp defeated the best while suffering only three defeats himself, and his dominance in the ring has contributed well to NDW's success.  Therefore, we wish him the best in all his future ventures.

As Sapp walks triumphantly down the isle one last time, the fans chant his name, then "Please Don't Go!" in a display of appreciation.

Team USA (Jim Duggan/Sgt. Slaughter) won over Billy And Chuck (Billy Gunn/Chuck Palumbo) via default.

Trainers have decided that Billy Gunn is too badly injured to compete, and will probably miss at least a month.  Therefore, Team USA advances into the semifinals next week via a bye!

Flying Tigers (Red and Funaki) when C. Harris pinned Funaki after the
Death Sentence in 0:19:34.
Rating: **** 1/4

This was a hell of a match.  Funaki and Red did their damndest, but they had a sizable disadvantage due to AMW being much fresher (since they defeated The Undertaker and Insane Dragon in 2 minutes).  Nevertheless, this was a very close bout, and it looked like it could have gone the other way if Red had managed to land the InfraRed in one of the two attempts he made.

America's Most Wanted advance in the tournament, and will meet Team USA next week in the Semifinals.

It's only the first week of 2005, and already New Deal Wrestling has a strong candidate for Match of the Year!  Killings, Psicosis, Briscoe and Wright put on a hell of a match here, and while we might say that a lot, this match speaks for itself.  After a number of Flying Legdrops and J-Drillers, a Dragon Suplex finally put away Killings to allow Project Wunderkind to advance in the tournament.

Interestingly, the top four seeds in the tournament have all made it to the semifinals, and while there might not have been many surprises in this tournament, the semifinals and finals promise to be extremely competitive.

As we fade out, we see Project Wunderkind celebrating their victory in the center of the ring.

Card rating: *** 3/4

Match observations:

Match of the Night: Ron Killings & Psicosis vs. Project Wunderkind

What a card!  This was easily the best show NDW has ever put on, and we've got the feeling that the best is yet to come!

For starters, the Tag Team Turmoil Tourmanet will conclude next week.  Still remaining in the tournament are Team USA, America's Most Wanted, The Future, and Project Wunderkind.  These teams have all demonstrated clearly that they are among the best in the world today, and therefore this tournament could go any way from here.

Of course, there are complications.  Alex Wright has been expressing interest in returning to Germany, while Sgt. Slaughter has declared that he's likely to retire.  Both have promised that if their team wins Tag Team Turmoil, however, that they will not leave NDW.  This means there is even more at stake.  Also at stake is a contract in a certain Texas-based wrestling promotion that we're forbidden to mention.  We can say, however, that the promoter will be present next week, and has even asked to referee the tournament finals.  We suggest you tune in, as he may very well be recognizable to many of you!

Due to the ferocity of the unprovoked attacks by The Undertaker, Deranged has declined to work for NDW in the future, claiming that the locker room is too chaotic.  We wish him the best, as he's a great talent.

After New Jack's beating this week, Slash has decided to end his association with NDW and find work elsewhere rather than trying to settle the score.  I suppose that shows who the bigger man in Hardcore Hell was.

We wish Bob Sapp the best in Japan, and thank him for working with NDW for the time that he did.

Also next week, Julio Dinero will grant Nana a rematch.  Nana came up short last time he was granted a match, but only just.  Can he climb the mountain and unseat Dinero this time?  One can only hope.

Once again, Flying Tigers will face off against A-Train and Ahmed Johnson in what will be the rubber match in these teams' recent series.  Both have a win and a loss, so this should be interesting.  What will they do to win?

Finally, there will be a Number One Contenders match for the Tag Team Titles next week between Best of the Best and The Undertaker and Matt Hardy.  These are four of the greatest workers in NDW today, so saying this one will be close is probably an understatement.

Tune in to see what happens!

TOO funny!  ;D Ace is such a jerk.
Snabbit888Posted on 10/06/04 at 07:32:44

Hrm... I was kinda thinking Billy and Chuck might win.  Too bad Billy got hurt.

My predictions are AMW over Team USA and The Future over Project Wunderkind, with AMW winning it all.

Not happy to see Bob Sapp win on his way out over the World champion.  'Tis the magic of unbooked.

The Johnny Ace racist stuff is awesome.  It's awesome that you and I can help each other come up with cool late night angles, but man, when are we going to come up with something that isn't comedic? :)

Undertaker/Hardy is an interesting tandem.  Wonder where this will go.

Overall, not too shabby at all.
Critic of the DawnPosted on 10/06/04 at 07:52:34

Billy getting hurt was a dissappointment to me as well.  Not that the match would have been very good, but he's still a NDW worker, and his team had a shot at winning.  A longshot, perhaps, but a shot nonetheless.

I'm getting the feeling that you might be right in your predictions.  AMW and The Future have ruled the tag team division thus far, and another confrontation in their epic series would somehow be fitting for the finals.

Actually, I didn't mind Sapp winning.  Dinero is an extremely slimy and dishonest champion, and that match gets over the fact that he is because he has to be - Sapp easily beat him despite interference.  That makes it look like others have a chance, which will hopefully draw interest for future title matches.

I'm really enjoying the Johnny Ace stuff myself.  As for why we come up with mostly comedy stuff, it's because we talk about those things late at night, and late at night everything is funny.  Thus, the Italian Stallions and Johnny Ace the racist.

The Undertaker and Matt Hardy are two of the most dangerous singles wrestlers in NDW.  Hardy was the first Global Heavyweight Champion, and The Undertaker was actually his first opponent.  Teaming up, they're trouble for the NDW roster.

Thanks for the feedback.
