NDW Week 51 - Calm Before The Storm

Critic of the DawnPosted on 09/19/04 at 03:57:12

NDW is back to its regular time since, for the first weekend in a couple weeks, I'm not overly busy. Keen! Anyway, this card might dissappoint fans of pure wrestling, but I think it holds up quite well from a storyline perspective since there are several major storyline twists. With all of that said, please enjoy the card.

The winners are Edge and Matt Hardy. Time of match: 0:11:38

Edge and Matt Hardy defeated Chris Sabin and Deranged when Edge pinned Deranged
after a power bomb in 0:11:38.
Rating: **** 1/4

After Matt Hardy determined that Chris Sabin was the man who attacked him backstage several weeks ago, preventing his participation in the main event, he was determined to get revenge. With his issue with Edge finally settled, Hardy demanded a match against Sabin. Though Sabin is Edge's partner, he agreed that Sabin was out of line, and so a tag team match was signed, pitting Edge and Matt Hardy against Sabin and a partner of his choosing, who turned out to be Deranged.

This was an excellent match which really got the crowd into the show, and Hardy and Edge worked amazingly well together. Hardy hit the Twist of Fate no less than three times before Edge finally scored a pinfall over Deranged with the power bomb that has won several high profile matches for him so far in NDW.

The winner is A-Train. Time of match: 0:03:05

A-Train pinned Chris Harris after the Derailer in 0:03:05.
Rating: ** 3/4

A-Train absolutely killed Chris Harris here. Though Harris was in control early, A-Train stopped him in his tracks (no pun intended) with a series of illegal chokes. His opponent thus weakened, A-Train hit several power moves, then took Harris out with the Derailer. What a train wreck (pun intended)!

Ahmed Johnson pinned Red after a flying shoulderblock in 0:08:13.
Rating: * 3/4
[Johnny Ace interfered against Red.]

The Amazing Red was his usual high flying self here, absolutely schooling Ahmed Johnson on the finer points of his style. Then, Overpower's Johnny Ace interfered, tripping Red and allowing Johnson to score with the Pearl River Plunge. Though Red was able to kick out, the wind had been taken out of his sails, and after being put through a table with a second Plunge, a flying shoulderblock finally put an end to him.

The verdict: A DOUBLE COUNTOUT !

Doug Basham and Julio Dinero battled to a double countout in 0:06:34.
Rating: ** 1/2
[Alexis Laree interfered against Doug Basham.]

Doug Basham came into this match expecting a fight, but unfortunately it appeared that the Global Heavyweight Champion wasn't interested in anything more than another Overpower beatdown. With a heavy assist from Alexis Laree and his teammates, Julio Dinero knocked Doug Basham out of the ring and beat him silly, finishing the battle off strong with the STO as the referee threw out the match. Once again our champion uses underhanded means to destroy his opponent!

The winner is Jimmy Snuka. Time of match: 0:03:50

Jimmy Snuka defeated Danny Basham by countout in 0:03:50.
Rating: 3/4*
[Legend interfered against Danny Basham.]

Both Bashams have been laid out on the outside and counted out tonight. In this match, Snuka and Legend took advantage of the fact that Danny's brother Doug had been knocked out by an STO from Julio Dinero earlier to use some discrete cheating of their own to pick up a win for Snuka. Legend pulled the rope down as Danny ran into it, then Snuka argued with the referee while Legend delivered his dangerous Stone Cutter on the outside, knocking Danny Basham out cold and giving the win to Superfly.

(Matt Hardy is seen walking backstage with Lita. As he walks, we see that he
is approaching Edge.)

Matt Hardy: Ah. There you are, Edge. After tonight's match, there's something
I have to say to you.

(Edge looks up.)

Edge: What is it, Matt?

Matt Hardy: I wanted to say thanks. We've been enemies for a long time, Edge,
and I appreciate that you put that behind you and helped me get some revenge
against your partner. That's why I wanted to ask you... the two of us did
amazingly well when we were on the same team. So... what I'm trying to say, is
I want you to end your partnership with Sabin. Together we could be
unstoppable, Edge. We could run this place, and nobody would be able to stand
against us. Not The Future, not Overpower, not America's Most Wanted...
nobody. What do you say?

(Edge shakes his head.)

Edge: Matt, I appreciate your offer, but Sabin and I are a team, and besides
that we're friends. The only reason I fought him tonight was out of respect to
you, and he knows that. After tonight, we're a team again, and we mean to win
Tag Team Turmoil together. I'm sorry.

(Matt scowls and turns his back on Edge, walking away.)

Matt Hardy: Not as sorry as I am, Edge. Our alliance is over. From this point
on, you'd better view me as a rival and as a threat to any title you contend
for. Because business is business, and that's all I'll be.

Rating: * 1/4
[Nidia interfered against New Jack.]

This was a very close match, and in the end it came down to experience in hardcore tactics. New Jack was able to avoid a plancha by O'Haire, then to score the Diving Headbutt for a nearfall, and then to clock O'Haire with a trash can. When O'Haire tried to battle back and locked New Jack in a choke against the ropes, he didn't release the hold soon enough for the referee, who called for the DQ. This was certainly a controversial ruling to say the least.

As promised, the brackets of Tag Team Turmoil 2005 have been finalized, so
while we take a brief break for intermission, we will announce the first round
pairings now.

The first pairing will see the Tag Team Champions Team USA facing off against
the new team of Ron Simmons and Balls Mahoney.

Next, Billy And Chuck will face Hardcore Hell in what's certain to be a hell
of a brawl.

Third, in a bit of a size mismatch, Flying Tigers will face off against A-Train
and Ahmed Johnson of Overpower.

The fourth matchup will see America's Most Wanted teaming up to face The
Undertaker and a partner to be announced in the near future.

Fifth, The Basham Brothers will take on The Future, who are a favorite of many
to win the entire tournament.

Sixth, Chris Sabin and Edge will team up once again as Best of the Best to face
Johnny Ace and Shane Douglas of Overpower. Ace and Douglas were our last Tag
Team Champions, so this one should be close.

Seventh, Ron "The Truth" Killings and his partner Psicosis will face Legend and
"Superfly" Jimmy Snuka. Legend and Snuka have been on a roll lately, so this
should be a close one as well.

Finally, Prince Nana has announced that he has acquired the services of a new
servant, and that they will team up to face Project Wunderkind in the last
pairing of the tournament.

Additionally, word has it that a well known promoter from Texas has displayed
interest in the results of this tourmanent, and may be bringing the winners in
for a short time to tour his territory. At the moment it doesn't look like
this will effect their NDW appearances at all, but we will keep you posted.

Thank you, and enjoy the rest of the show.

Number-One-Contenders-Match:
Prince Nana pinned Jim Duggan with the Elevated DDT in 0:12:14.
Rating: -1/4*

Prince Nana took it to Jim Duggan from the beginning of this match, beating him from pillar to post as Hacksaw tried his best to recover. He even managed an Elevated DDT, but Hacksaw somehow came back and took control of the match, battering Nana with clotheslines and even hitting the three point stance several times. Nana would not be denied, however, and hit his Elevated DDT a second time for the win and number one contender status. He will face Julio Dinero next week.

Ever since leaving The Undertaker, Prince Nana has been on quite a tear. But even Nana looked uncertain as to whether this would give him enough momentum to defeat 'Taker in their high profile match later tonight...

(America's Most Wanted's music hits, and James Storm makes his way to the
ring.)

James Storm: I'm going to make this short and sweet. Ever since Chris Harris
and I came to New Deal Wrestling, we've been a major force both within the
tag team division and in singles competition. And Tag Team Turmoil will
give us the perfect chance to prove just how dominant we are by winning the
competition and being officially named the best tag team in New Deal Wrestling.
There are some other good teams, sure. The Future has taken us to our limit
many times. Sabin and Edge are both amazing athletes. But none of them have
been tag team champs as many times as us, and none of them has half the chance
we do in this tournament. So, when you see our hands being raised in victory,
you can say that you heard it here first!

The bell rings. The time limit has expired.

Triangle Match:
Marcos drew Chance Beckett and Johnny Ace in 0:20:00.
Rating: **

This match went to a fairly incolclusive draw. Surprisingly, Ace and Marcos worked together to isolate Chance Beckett for most of the early match, but eventually Beckett tagged himself out and refused to tag back in, so the match became a contest between the aging Johnny Ace and the young Marcos. Marcos proved to be impossible for his larger foe to catch, and eventually the time limit ran out and the match was declared a draw.

Rating: * 1/2
[Jimmy Snuka interfered against Damian 666.]

Alert that Legend and Snuka had used underhanded tactics to win already this evening, the referee in this match watched this very even exchange very carefully, looking for the first sign of illegal behavior from Legend. Sure enough, Snuka made his way discretely to ringside and attempted to use the same technique which got him a victory earlier this evening, but this time the referee was expecting it and disqualified Legend as soon as Snuka pulled down the top rope.

The Unstoppable Force returns for his first match after The Big One! Insane Dragon tried every high flying trick in his book, and for a while it seemed to be working. Then Sapp caught him, and in just about another minute it was over. It would appear that even after losing his Global Heavyweight Title, Bob Sapp has not lost a single step.

[Princehood vs. Princehood]:
The Undertaker pinned Prince Nana with the Tombstone in 0:07:05.
Rating: ***

Prince Nana was impressive in this match, really taking it to The Undertaker with an admirable fire. He even managed to hit his Elevated DDT on The Undertaker for the first time ever. All of this was for nothing, however, as Nana was just too battered from his earlier match to take down someone as dangerous as The Undertaker. After a quick Tombstone, this one was over, and Nana will no longer be referred to as a Prince within New Deal Wrestling.

pinned R. Simmons after a small package in 0:15:02.
Rating: * 1/2

Ron "The Truth" Killings and his partner Psicosis managed to pull out a hardfought victory over the new and dangerous pairing of Ron Simmons and Balls Mahoney, but it was far from decisive. Following the decision, Simmons laid Killings out with a spinebuster slam. Psicosis flew across the ring with a flying dropkick to Simmons, but as he got to his feet Balls Mahoney grabbed him and hit the Nutcracker Suite. With this, Simmons grabbed a microphone and shouted that he would be DAMNED if he and Mahoney didn't make an impact at Tag Team Turmoil! With a first round match against Team USA, they might do just that, as Sgt. Slaughter will be leaving NDW if Team USA fails to win Tag Team Turmoil.

Team USA (Jim Duggan and Sgt. Slaughter) defeated
Project Wunderkind (Alex Wright and Jay Briscoe) when Slaughter defeated
A. Wright when A. Wright passed out in a bearhug in 0:02:37.
Rating: * 3/4
(Team USA retained the Global Tag Team Titles.)

Things looked bad for Team USA right from the start. Project Wunderkind is younger than them, faster than them, and made up of two better wrestlers than them. And from the beginning where Jay Briscoe attacked the weary Jim Duggan (who had already had a match this evening) before the bell, it looked almost impossible that Team USA would be able to retain their titles.

And yet, "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan was somehow able to escape Project Wunderkind long enough to tag in Sgt. Slaughter, who immediately locked Alex Wright into a bearhug. To the surprise of everyone (especially Jay Briscoe, who would surely have broken the hold if he thought it might happen), Alex Wright struggled for a while before finally passing out. Thus, Team USA picks up their second major tag team division victory with another bearhug from Slaughter.

Again red white and blue confetti fell from above as patriotic music played for Team USA's celebration. As we fade out, DUggan holds his two by four high while Slaughter waves the American Flag and the crowd chants "USA! USA! USA!"

Match observations:

Match of the Evening: Edge & Matt Hardy vs. Chris Sabin & Deranged

Tonight was certainly eventful. Edge turned down an offer of alliance from Matt Hardy, Nana became the new top contender (which Edge might have something to say about) for the Global Heavyweight Title and lost the right to call himself a prince in one night, and Team USA retained their titles against all odds to the cheers of the adoring fans. Truly this was a great night to be a wrestling fan.

Next week is our final show before the two week Tag Team Turmoil 2005 tournament begins, and as such there should be quite a bit going on.

To start things off, Edge will team up with Ron "The Truth" Killings to face Xavier and Alex Wright in what should be an interesting preview of the tournament. Each of these four men comes from a team in one of the brackets in the second half of the tournament, so perhaps we can see where the advantage lies by observing this bout.

Nana has announced that he has acquired the services of a new servant, and there are rumors that he may even have raised taxes in Ghana to do so. Regardless, this new servant will make his debut next week and team with Nana as they face Legend & "Superfly" Jimmy Snuka. Who will it be? And who will come out on top in this contest?

Johnny Ace and Shane Douglas of Overpower will team up to take on Billy And Chuck. Billy And Chuck have had some success in NDW so far, but haven't made it to the top yet. Will this match give them the start they need to dominate the tournament?

Furthermore, we will see a preview of Tag Team Turmoil when Flying Tigers face down A-Train and Ahmed Johnson. This is an actualy first round match from the tournament, so it should give both teams a chance to feel each other out. Additionally, Red is hoping to get a chance at revenge against Johnson after his loss tonight.

The Future will team up with Project Wunderkind against Team USA and America's Most Wanted in eight man tag team action. These four teams are considered by most to have the best chances of victory in the tournament, so they should deliver a hell of a match against each other here next week.

Finally, in our main event Julio Dinero will have his second title defense, this time against Nana. Nana has been on fire since breaking away from The Undertaker, but Dinero is not to be underestimated as so many would tell you. He knows every dirty trick in the book and won't hesitate to use them if they'll let him retain his title. Will Nana upset Dinero? Or will Dinero's reign continue?

Tune in to find out.

Hahaha, Team USA win again. Sure, it might have been a lame finish ( :P ) but a win's a win.

Meanwhile, I'm thinking there's more to this Edge/Hardy situation that there seems. Maybe Edge is still remembering his losing his ladder...

I have to admit that I'm marking out as Team USA rules the Tag Team division with their feeble movesets and microscopic workrate scores.  Individually, these two just can't get it done, but together nobody can stop them.  I was sure Project Wunderkind would win the titles here, but *somehow* Team USA comes back from a major disadvantage to totally squash them!

As for the Edge/Hardy stuff... the feud itself is over.  But Edge turning Hardy down didn't sit well with Hardy, who might just look for someone else to fill that same role.  And if he does, it seems pretty likely that they would come into conflict with Edge.  Should be interesting.

This card was actually much longer than I like because NDW's roster is getting uncomfortably (to me, anyway) large.  I gave 7 guys the week off, and I still had about 13 matches, which is insane.  Perhaps luckily, after next week it's time for contract evaluations once again, so I expect to lose about a half dozen guys (doubtless my best and most popular wrestlers because TNM is evil like that.)  Unlike most people seem to, I creatively interpret Rick's rules to mean that all of my people should be on the same contract schedule.  Therefore, wrestlers tend to all pack up and go at once rather than over the course of six months.  This helps keep storylines more consistent (in my opinion) and can lead to a major roster shakeup which creates new storylines every six months.
