NDW Week 50 - One Shot At Glory

Critic of the DawnPosted on 09/09/04 at 07:15:14

Since I'm going to be going to the Ring of Honor show in New Jersey over the weekend, I'm posting this early yet again.  I hope none of you are too awfully dissappointed that you don't have to wait.  ;)  Anyway, I'm pleased by how this card came out, especially some of the stuff with Nana and his surprise one night only partner.

Hope you enjoy.

Rating: -**

"Hacksaw" Jim Duggan and Ron Simmons started things off tonight as Duggan attempted to gain revenge for Simmons' unprovoked attack last week during Team USA's Tag Team Title match.  Unfortunately for the aging Duggan, Simmons proved to be too much for him, even withstanding a hit from Duggan's trusty two by four.  Simmons came back in short order and hit the second Dominator of the match for a victory here.  If Simmons wants to make a mark in NDW, it looks like he's going about it the right way.

[Jim Duggan interfered against A-Train.]

A second match for Team USA yields a second defeat, this time at the hands of the dangerous A-Train of Overpower.  The last minutes of this match were intense as both Jim Duggan and Johnny Ace attempted to interfere on behalf of their associates, but in the end Slaughter was simply outclassed by A-Train, who was stronger, faster, and younger than him.  A Train Wreck ended this match with a brutal exclamation point.

after a double arm DDT in 0:08:03.
Rating: ***

This victory showed that while Project Wunderkind might have been able to grab top contender status, The Future is still a very real danger in the Tag Team division.  The match itself was very even until Beckett managed to score a pair of stiff double-arm DDTs in quick succession, knocking Alex Wright out cold.

Rating: *** 1/4

The Undertaker put and end to Danny Basham here with ease, dominating him for pretty much the entire match.  When Basham did manage to get some offense in, 'Taker shrugged it off with little to no ill effects.  Apparently all Danny Basham's skills at brawling simply proved insufficient to defeat The Prince of Darkness here tonight.

Rating: ** 3/4

This was an entertaining spotfest between two of NDW's accomplished highfliers.  Marcos gave the match his all, and though Insane Dragon fought hard as well, the growing skill of Marcos and perhaps a little luck forced Dragon to submit after kicking out of a pair of Tilt-A-Whirl Inverted DDTs from his opponent.

(Edge's music hits, and he makes his way to the ring to a chorus of cheers.)

Edge: Well, last week at The Big One in San Francisco, I proved all the
doubters wrong by taking down Matt Hardy once and for all.  There is now no
doubt that I'm the better man for the time being... and it feels good.

(The crowd pops.)

Edge: I'm out here for a reason, though, and it isn't just to brag about past
victories.  No, I'm here because I'm ready... for another victory.  By winning
my match last week, I earned a title shot!  And I intend to collect.  But for
whatever reason, Psicosis has been booked for a shot tonight, despite the fact
that he hasn't done half of what I have.  Fair enough.  I suppose Dinero
deserves some time to prepare to lose his title.  But don't expect me to forget
about my title shot.  I want it, and I want it soon!  I earned it fair and
square, and unlike Dinero, I'm not content to wait three months.  So Dinero...
or whoever holds the title... be ready!

[Danny Basham interfered against Ahmed Johnson.]

Ahmed Johnson destroyed Doug Basham here despite interference by Danny.  Unfortunately, Johnson's own tactics were controversial enough that he managed to get himself disqualified, which was a shame for him, since after a pair of spinebusters and a pair of Pearl River Plunges, the victory was more or less in the bag.

It looks like Prince Nana's hired helper is none other than his fellow African, Kamala the Ugandan Giant!

Part basic brawl, part high speed spotfest, and part garbage match, this contest didn't really gel very well.  While it wasn't pretty, it was extremely taxing and brutal to all involved.  After nearly fourty minutes of brawling, Billy Gunn finally managed to suplex the massive Ugandan through a table, thus bringing this match to a merciful and and most likely sending Kamala running back to the jungles of Uganda.

Tag Team Turmoil 2005 is only a few short weeks away now.  After announcing it
last week at The Big One, we promised to release some details about it tonight,
and release details we shall.

The tournament will consist of 16 of the top tag teams in New Deal Wrestling
today, and will take place over two nights.  While the brackets are still being
arranged, we can safely say that the Tag Team Champions Team USA will be the
number one seed in this tournament to find out which team in NDW is the best.

Unfortunately, Sgt. Slaughter has declined to sign a contract with NDW, but
after negotiations, he has agreed to remain until the tournament.  He has also
promised that if Team USA is victorious, he will remain in NDW.  Otherwise, he
is looking forward to a long and fruitful retirement.

Thank you for your patience, and please enjoy the rest of the show.

when Douglas pinned Damian 666 after a powerslam in 0:15:42.
Rating: *** 1/4
[Nidia interfered against Shane Douglas.]

Johnny Ace and Shane Douglas continue to prove that they can work wonders together.  These former Dynamic Dudes took it to the relatively new pairing of Sean O'Haire and Damian 666, utilizing superior teamwork to easily defeat their younger, faster opponents.  A simple powerslam to Damian by Douglas ended this one after a solid back and forth battle.

(Prince Nana can be seen leading a battered looking Kamala, dressed in full
headhunter garb including a spear, through the hallways.)

Prince Nana: Now my friend, the bad man I was telling you about should be right
through here.  I know that you are one of the finest warriors in all of Africa,
so I am certain that you can help me here.

(Kamala rubs his belly and smacks his lips.)

Kamala: Ugalabega?  Yum yum!

Prince Nana: Yes, right.  I suppose you can eat him once you kill him.  Just
don't tell anyone I was involved.

(Prince Nana rolls his eyes, then gestures to a lockerroom door.)

Prince Nana: He's right in there, Kamala!  Get him!

(Kamala raises his spear, kicks the door open, and gives a mighty battle cry.)

Kamala: UMBELE!

(Dashing into the lockerroom with his spear at the ready, Kamala is surprised
to find the man who destroyed him time and time again in the early 1990s, The
Undertaker.  His spear drops with a clank from nerveless fingers.)

Kamala: Guja?  Umbele?  Nana gama dooda!

(The portly Ugandan's protests are cut off as The Undertaker grabs him by the
throat, lifts him high over his head, and chokeslams him through a catering
table.  Kamala loses consciousness with all the dignity that a 360 pound African
with stars painted on his manboobs can muster.  Which isn't much.)

The Undertaker: You sent *that* after the Prince of Darkness?

(Prince Nana stares from outside The Undertaker's room.  Then runs away with
all the speed that his ample posterior allows.  Which, again, isn't much.)

(Julio Dinero retained the Global Heavyweight Title.)
[Balls Mahoney and Ron Simmons interfered against Psicosis.]

What the hell is Ron Simmons doing at ringside?  And why is Balls Mahoney there with him?

Whatever reason they had to be here, Julio Dinero managed to (just barely) walk away with his Global Heavyweight Title thanks to the repeated interference of Simmons and Mahoney.  As the leader of Overpower left the ring, holding his title high, Ron Simmons grabbed a microphone, shouting that he had been overlooked for long enough, and that he had found a new partner in Balls Mahoney to make sure that nobody would ever make the same mistake again.

As we fade out, Mahoney and Simmons stand over the fallen Psicosis in the ring as the crowd boos them out of the building.

Match observations:

Match of the Evening: Psicosis vs. Julio Dinero

First, Edge will be teaming up with his longtime archnemesis to face the man he claims attacked him two weeks ago.  Who was this man?  None other than Edge's occasional tag team partner Chris Sabin.  Sabin claims that he was just trying to help Edge out, but Edge claims he didn't need the help.  Thus, Edge and Hardy will face off against Chris Sabin and Deranged in what should be an interesting matchup.

Prince Nana and The Undertaker will face off against each other once again in a high stakes matchup.  Prince Nana has claimed that The Undertaker has no right to call himself a Prince of anything, while The Undertaker feels nothing but contempt for Prince Nana.  Thus, the loser of this match will be unable to refer to them as a prince ever again in New Deal Wrestling.  This may well be the first Princehood vs. Princehood match in wrestling history.

Also next week, a new contender for the Global Heavyweight Title will be decided.  "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan will be taking on Prince Nana.  This will be Nana's second match on the card - will he be up to facing both of these formidable athletes?

Ron Simmons and Balls Mahoney made quite a statement this week by demolishing Psicosis and allowing Julio Dinero to pick up the pieces.  Ron "The Truth" Killings and Psicosis have therefore asked for a tag team match against this dangerous new pairing next week.  It should be a good one.

Finally, Team USA will compete against Project Wunderkind in a match for the Global Tag Team Titles.  Team USA has quite a handicap going into this match with Slaughter being on the verge of retirement and Duggan wrestling two high profile matches in one evening.  Can these two patriots retain their titles?  Do you believe in miracles?

Additionally, the full brackets for Tag Team Turmoil 2005 should be released next week.

See you then.

Interesting show, Eric.  The new tag team champions both suffer singles defeat, which doesn't bode well for them.  I predict that Project Wunderkind takes the titles from them.

The stuff with Kamala was fun and clever, if not a wee bit corny. :)

I like Edge wanting a title shot, and the main event was really really good.  Solid show.
Critic of the DawnPosted on 09/14/04 at 16:41:13

Yeah, Slaughter and Duggan came in with a couple of huge wins, but their initial momentum seems to be wearing off.  Project Wunderkind taking the titles wouldn't surprise me too much at all.

Then again, since Slaughter went and quit, I suspect TNM will leave the titles on them even after the tournament, just so I have to find new champs.  TNM is mean like that.

The Kamala bit was supposed to be corny.  It involves Kamala, after all. ;D  Originally Kamala was supposed to be a mystery wrestler, but TNM wouldn't let me select one as such.  I was all set to go with the next wrestler on my list when I decided Kamala would be much more fun.  Poor Kamala, though.  Bet he's glad he was here for one night only!

The whole storyline with Edge wanting his title shot and management not telling him when it would be came about when I misread the rules.  Originally I thought the winner of Edge vs. Matt Hardy would get a shot here.  Turns out it was the winner of the match Psicosis was in.  Oops.  So now Edge <i>will</i> get a title shot eventually... but only when the rules allow it.  So he has a reason to be upset, and has something to prove, especially with Nana and Duggan competing for top contender status next week.

As for the main event, I'm starting to like Dinero with the title.  He's clearly not a strong champion, but he seems to be playing the cheating heel very well, winning by KOing Sapp with the title belt at The Big One and with heavy interference and a handfull of tights here.  By the time he loses the title, people are going to be rabid to see it change hands.

Thanks for the feedback.

Poor Slaughter and Duggan, I thought they were supposed to be the biggest stars in the promotion. :(
I also have to say I fancy Project Wunderkind for the belts (though that's the German in me talking). After that though, The Future look like bonified number one contenders.

Now, howsabout having the Nana/Undertaker match refereed by Iaukea? I personally liked the Kamala stuff, but then I'm a fan of dumb stuff like that. :)
Critic of the DawnPosted on 09/14/04 at 19:20:47

Heh.  If Sarge and Hacksaw started claiming they were NDW's top stars, I think The Future at the very least would dispute that.  It looks like you're probably right, though.  Project Wunderkind seem pretty likely to take the Tag Team Titles next week from Team USA.  Still, you can never tell.  Duggan and Slaughter can't be underestimated, as you can never tell when their weak offense will inexplicably result in a victory! ;)

As for The Future being top contenders, they aren't officially, no.  But they're definately a favorite in Tag Team Turmoil 2005 after dominating the division for six months, and if they manage to pull out a victory, they'll almost certainly get another shot at the titles.  AMW are also favored to take the tournament, but something tells me that we might be surprised by the result.  It's just a gut feeling at this point, though.  The brackets should be announced next week.

As for "The Artist Formerly Known As" Prince Iaukea reffing 'Taker vs. Nana... that would just be silly.  And I'm never silly! ::)

Glad you liked the Kamala bit.  Yes, it was dumb, but I enjoyed picturing the scene nonetheless.
