NDW Week 49 - The Big One

Critic of the DawnPosted on 09/02/04 at 05:41:05

This is it.  The biggest card in NDW's history.  I've really been looking forward to it, so I kinda like the fact that I'm posting it a bit early.  Since I'm going to be away for the holiday weekend, I figured it'd be nice to post before I go.  So here I am.  And here it is.  Enjoy.

Ladder Match:
Edge defeated Matt Hardy in 0:09:12.
Rating: *** 1/4

Hell of a match, even if it felt like it should have gone at least 15 more minutes.  Edge and Hardy are so evenly matched, but this is Edge's specialty match and he was therefore more familiar with it than Hardy, who has been in a few ladder matches himself.  The climax of the match hit when Hardy hit Edge with an inverted DDT off of the top of the ladder.  He seemed to hurt himself as much as Edge, however, and shortly thereafter Edge grabbed the contract, making himself the top contender.  Hardy wearily rolled out of the ring and grabbed a microphone.

(Matt Hardy grabs a microphone as Edge starts to leave the ring.)

Matt Hardy: Wait... Edge!

(Edge turns, but Hardy is out of breath and takes a moment to speak.)

Matt Hardy: I just wanted to say...  You proved that you were the better man
here tonight.  And I might not like that, but I respect it.  Any lesser
wrestler would have been out cold after that DDT from the top, but you came
back from it and took me out.  So Edge...

(Matt Hardy approaches his nemesis.)

Matt Hardy: With that in mind...

(Edge looks wary and ready to defend himself.)

Matt Hardy: I'd like to shake your hand.  Thank you.  We've had a hell of a run
against each other.

(Edge looks around at the crowd, which begins to chant "Shake his hand!  Shake
his hand!"  After a moment of hesitation, he reaches out and the two shake as
the crowd pops.)

Matt Hardy: Good luck when you get your shot, Edge.  You deserve that title.
But once you have it... keep me in mind when you're scheduling your title
defenses.

Overpower (A-Train and Ahmed Johnson) defeated Sean O'Haire and Damian 666 when
A-Train pinned Damian 666 after the Derailer in 0:03:38.
Rating: 1/4*

Overpower wins its first out of four matches this evening with A-Train and Ahmed Johnson absolutely brutalizing Sean O'Haire and Damian 666.  A quick Derailer by A-Train took out Damian, the smallest wrestler in this match, at just over the three and a half minute mark.  O'Haire was furious and charged Overpower, but quickly fell victim to a Pearl River Plunge by Ahmed Johnson.

This is not a good sign for the foes of Overpower this evening...

The winner is The Undertaker. Time of match: 0:15:02

The Undertaker defeated Prince Nana by disqualification in 0:15:02.
Rating: ** 1/2

The Undertaker gets the victory over Prince Nana here, but only via Disqualification.  Prince Nana surprisingly controlled much of this match with a series of headbutts, avalanches, and butt bumps.  Nana thought he had the match won, but The Undertaker proved to be just too big for him to put away with his Elevated DDT.  This frustrated Nana, who eventually used that very move on referee Brian Hebner, getting himself disqualified in the process.

You have to believe that this feud isn't even close to being over with a non-finish like that.

The Basham Brothers (Doug Basham and Danny Basham) when J. Snuka pinned
Danny Basham after a flying headbutt in 0:15:41.
Rating: *** 1/2

Snuka and Legend barely eke out a victory here.  The Bashams dominated both of these disrespectful men for most of the match, but Snuka turned it around in just three seconds by taking Danny down with a shoulderblock, then going up top and hitting a flying headbutt.  Legend tied up Doug, and a threecount was administered.  Tough break for the Bashams.

Rating: ***

Project Wunderkind pick up a fast victory here, pinning Xavier's hired gun Insane Dragon in just over 4 minutes with a sick Reverse Neckbreaker from Alex Wright.

What's this... it's Chance Beckett!  As Insane Dragon staggers to his feet, Beckett springs off of the ropes, lands behind him, and delivers a reverse DDT!  That's the Chance Encounter, folks!  It looks like Beckett is back, and he's pissed at Dragon for costing him a shot at the tag team titles!

with the 8 Second Ride in 0:23:02.
Rating: **** 1/4

This exhibition match between three of New Deal Wrestling's top babyfaces really wowed the west coast crowd.  Harris and Storm of AMW and Chris "HAIL" Sabin traded holds, submissions, and high flying moves for so long that the referee allowed the match to go on past the normal time limit.  Finally, Storm hit Sabin with his Eight Second Ride, bringing an end to the most exciting match of the evening thus far.

(Overpower is seen together backstage.)

Julio Dinero: Okay.  We've picked up our first win of the evening.  The rest
of this show is ours.  Tonight, Overpower is going to truly come into our own
as the greatest force within New Deal Wrestling today.  And it starts next.
Are you two ready to beat those washed up, flag-waving has-beens into next
week?

Johnny Ace: Definately.

Shane Douglas: We've got this match in the (CENSORED) bag.

Julio Dinero: Just in case, though, I've purchased a little insurance policy...

Ahmed Johnson: WAAGH?  DAAGH DAAGH NAAGH BAAGH-AGH!

A-Train: It's just in case the geezers try something, Ahmed.  Don't worry about
it.

Ahmed Johnson: SAAGHWAGH!

Johnny Ace: ...what?

(Everyone looks at Johnny Ace as if he's done something wrong.)

Johnny Ace: What?  I didn't understand him.

Shane Douglas: That's (CENSORED) ignorant, man.

A-Train: Seriously.  What'd he ever do to you?

(Ace sighs as Julio continues.)

Julio Dinero: And then Shane Douglas will destroy Deranged.

Shane Douglas: That dancing moron?  No sweat.

Julio: And I will fulfill my destiny by becoming the new Global Heavyweight
Champion!  Nobody can stop me!  I've got Sapp's number... and I don't want any
help from any of you!  I'm going to do this on my own, and prove that I am the
greatest professional wrestler alive today!

(Everyone applauds, except for Johnny Ace, who looks skeptical.  Ahmed Johnson
nudges him and he begins to hesitantly clap as well, perhaps wondering what
exactly he has signed himself up for.)

Rating: *
(Team USA won the Global Tag Team Titles.)
[Ron Simmons interfered against Jim Duggan.]

Team USA made their way to the ring to the cheers of the crowd, a 2 by 4 in the hands of Duggan and an American flag in those of Slaughter.  During the match that followed, nobody seemed to notice how bad Team USA was, they just wanted to cheer the patriotic duo.

Team USA's hopes of victory were nearly dashed when Ron Simmons ran in with a steel chair, smacking Duggan with it and nearly knocking him out cold.  Nonetheless, Team USA kept coming, and eventually Slaughter locked Johnny Ace in a bearhug, forcing him to tap out.  As Team USA celebrated, red, white and blue confetti was released from the ceiling as the crowd went wild.

Flying Tigers (Red and Funaki) defeated Hardcore Hell (Slash and New Jack) when
Red defeated New Jack by disqualification in 0:02:42.
Rating: ** 3/4

Hardcore Hell took the DQ loss here, but they apparently weren't interested in a match so much as a fight.  In 3 short minutes, they put Red through a table, powerbombed Funaki, and choked out Red until the referee called for the bell to break up the beat down.  This one will go down in the records as a victory for Flying Tigers, but it was not a pleasant one by any means.

The winner is Deranged. Time of match: 0:05:08

Deranged pinned Shane Douglas with the Blueprint in 0:05:08.
Rating: **

Overpower suffers its second defeat of the night at the hands of Deranged, who was simply too fast for the fatigued Shane Douglas to keep up with.  Though he fought well, after only five minutes Deranged was able to score with the Blueprint for the quick victory.

Things are looking much less promising for Julio Dinero now...

(As Deranged leaves the ring, a video package begins to play, showcasing many
of the top moments in New Deal Wrestling's Tag Team division.)

Tonight you've seen some of the greatest tag teams in the world today, and
witnessed a startling upset victory by a pair of veterans who are respected
by all.  But, in a division this size, how does one tell which tag team is
the best?  Next month, New Deal Wrestling presents Tag Team Turmoil 2005, a
tournament for this exact purpose.  Which team will reign supreme?  Time
will tell...

(With that, Julio Dinero's music hits, and our main event begins.)

Rating: * 3/4
(Julio Dinero won the Global Heavyweight Title.)
[Alexis Laree interfered against Bob Sapp.]

Here is your winner... and NEW Global Heavyweight Champion... Julio Dinero!

Julio Dinero picks up the victory here, but only through the heavy interference of Alexis Laree, who usually doesn't make her presence felt in Dinero's matches.  Bob Sapp absolutely crushed him from bell to bell, but after repeated interference by Laree made it clear that drastic measures were in order, he went for his title belt.  Unfortunately, Dinero was apparently ready for this, dodged the blow, took the belt, and knocked Bob Sapp out cold with it, pinning him down as the fans in San Francisco practically rioted.  As his music hit, Overpower came to the ring and hoisted him up on their shoulders.  It looks as if Dinero's predictions have come true!  Who can stop Overpower now?

Card rating: ** 1/4

Match observations:

Match of the Evening: Chris Harris vs. Chris Sabin vs. James Storm

The Big One didn't dissappoint, as the evening was full of shocking developments, not the least of which was Julio Dinero's unexpected victory over Bob Sapp.  Sapp was heavily favored going into this match, but it seems that he may have underestimated Overpower enough that he lost his title.

We return to the east coast next week with what should be an excellent card.

To start things off, "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan has challenged Ron Simmons to a one on one match.  Both of these men are seasoned veterans with a hardhitting brawling style of wrestling, so this should be quite a brutal contest.

The Future are irate that they lost a chance to contend for the tag team titles, so they have challenged Project Wunderkind to a rematch.  Wright and Briscoe have accepted, but stated that they will not place the top contender status on the line.

Flying Tigers will team up with Billy and Chuck to take on the pairing of Hardcore Hell and Prince Nana in an 8-Man Tag Team Tables Match.  Prince Nana has claimed that he will bring in a special tag team partner for one night only.  Who will it be?  Who will come out on top?  Will The Undertaker have anything to say?  Find out!

Finally, Julio Dinero will defend his newly won Global Heavyweight Title against none other than Psicosis.  Will the Lunchadore score gold?  Or will Dinero come out on top?  And when will Edge get his shot at the title?

We'll find out next week.  See you then.

I shall reply with off the top of my head thoughts as I read the card for.... The Big One!

Edge wins the ladder match... is the feud over?  Only time will tell.

Overpower with a big win over Damian 666 and Sean "I didn't touch that woman, I swear" O'Haire.  Overpower is the truly dominant stable of the NDW now.

Nana is a smart man.  Smart enough to knock out Hebner when he knew he wasn't gonna get the pin tonight.  :)

Poor Doug and Danny... jobbing to Snuka and
Legend on such a major show.

Wunderkind wins... and the return of Chance Beckett is HUGE!  Dragon is so gonna pay!

AMW vs Sabin in a triangle match... interesting.. Good to see you "max out" the rating on that match.  ;)

Overpower... quite possibly one of the best interview segements I've seen.  Ahmed is so lifelike and Ace is funny in that he's the only one that admits to not understanding Ahmed.

New Tag Team Champs!  Slaughter and Duggan in the feel-good moment of NDW's Big One.  But what was Simmons thinking interfering?  And will he bring in Too Cold Scorpio like he once did in WCW?

Looks like the Flying Tigers and Hardcore Hell gave us proof that the crowd was a hardcore crowd for this card, as they got a good rating for such a short match.

Poor [censored] Shane [censored] Douglas.  :)

Tag Team Turmoil 2005... it's coming!  Oughta be a good two weeks of tag team wrestling.  Should be interesting to see which 32 wrestlers end up teaming with each other for this extravaganza.

What a finish in the main event.  That was a classic ending... Sapp takes his title.. and runs with it at Dinero..
Dinero ducks... and Sapp gets clobbered with the belt while Hebner is just coming to in time to make the pin count.  Classic!

8 man tables!  Nana brings in a one time only hardcore partner... and Psicosis goes for the gold vs Dinero... And THIS show was the Big ONE?  :)  Things are looking good for NDW!

Thank you both.  ;D

I really enjoyed running this card.  I've been looking forward to it for quite some time, and even though a lot of the matches were pretty short, it was still a hell of a lot of fun to watch and comment on.  Also, I'm really getting a kick out of having Johnny Ace play the straight man in the Overpower bits where Ahmed Johnson talks.  I expect I'll be doing more of them as time goes on, although I don't want to overexpose the comic bit.

The thing which surprised me most was Dinero's victory.  This is unbooked, and Sapp has consistently dominated everone.  Plus, Dinero can't even hit his finisher on Sapp because Sapp is so huge.  This was really the only way Dinero could have won, and I get a kick out of the fact that he did.  It helps to promote him as a crafty and dangerous heel, which helps him a lot.
