NDW Week 48 - Peaceful Coexistence?

Critic of the DawnPosted on 08/28/04 at 19:39:20

This is the last card before The Big One, and I am pretty hyped.  Everything is going very nicely in the build to the big card, and even beyond that things are looking good.  I'm a bit surprised by the team that debuted this week, by the way.  It definately was not who I would have expected by a long shot.

Anyway, here's the card.  Enjoy it.

Rating: ****

Psicosis missed his Flying Legdrop once, but was able to hit it on his second attempt for a pinfall victory over Doug Basham, who has been on the receiving end of more than a few defeats lately.  Nevertheless, these two men worked an excellent match in the time alloted.

when Duggan pinned Ace with the Old Glory in 0:17:03.
Rating: 1/2*

What are those drums... is it... oh no...

It's "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan and Sergeant Slaughter!  These two patriotic veterans really took it to Overpower here, actually scoring a pinfall victory over them to a huge pop from the fans, who couldn't care less that neither man has had a match about ** in the last decade.  Since Johnny Ace and Shane Douglas are the Tag Team Champions, this victory makes the new team of Slaughter and Duggan the top contenders to face them at The Big One!  What a shock!

"Wildcat" Chris Harris vs. Chris "HAIL" Sabin vs. "Superfly" Jimmy Snuka

C. Sabin by disqualification in 0:00:22.
Rating: *
[Legend interfered against Chris Harris.]

Whoa!  This match is over before it even started!  Snuka's partner in crime Legend trips up Chris Harris and gets Snuka DQ'ed, then teams up with him to beat on Chris Harris and Chris Sabin until James Storm comes running out for the save!  AMW set Snuka up for the Death Sentence... but Legend pulls him to safety and they hightail it out of there!  Looks like we might just have another match for The Big One here!

The crowd is going into a frenzy.

The winner is James Storm. Time of match: 0:09:47

James Storm pinned Prince Nana after a rana in 0:09:47.
Rating: *** 3/4

Prince Nana looked to be in surprisingly good spirits during this match, and indeed he was in a form we haven't seen from him in quite some time, coming very near to a victory early on with a power bomb and generally dominating the match with effective power moves and stiff strikes.  James Storm stole the victory with a quick rana, however.

(Following the match, Prince Nana heads backstage and moves to what looks like
a post match interview.  But, for whatever reason, Matt Hardy can be seen lying
limply on the ground on the set.  Trainers hurry to the scene, but he appears
to be knocked out cold.  Looks like Matt Hardy's team in the main event will
have to find a replacement for him, and Prince Nana will have to wait to make
his announcement.)

Deranged & Marcos vs. Overpower (A-Train & Ahmed Johnson)

Marcos puts Ahmed Johnson in a chokehold.

Deranged and Marcos defeated Overpower (A-Train and Ahmed Johnson) when Marcos
defeated A. Johnson by disqualification in 0:08:55.
Rating: * 1/4
[Julio Dinero interfered against Marcos.]

The high fliers dominate their larger opponents, much to the surprise and delight of the fans!  In the end, Julio Dinero was apparently not pleased with the performance of his lackies, so he ran down and took out Marcos with a chairshot to the back, earning his men a DQ.  With this accomplished, Overpower quickly overwhelms Deranged and Marcos, leaving both lying on the canvas!

Legend vs. Danny Basham

Legend uses an atomic drop on Danny Basham.
Legend uses an elbowsmash on Danny Basham.
Legend hits a swinging neckbreaker on Danny Basham.
Numerous fans are using Legend for target practice.
Legend executes the Stone Cutter on Danny Basham.

Rudy Charles counts: One, two, three.
The crowd is vociferously booing Legend.

The winner is Legend. Time of match: 0:15:32

Legend pinned Danny Basham with the Stone Cutter in 0:15:32.
Rating: ***

Danny Basham sprinted to the ring at the start of this one, apparently enraged that Legend had gotten away with his attack on Harris and Sabin earlier today.  Unfortunately for him, Legend outfought him in a 15 minute brawl and ultimately scored with his devestating Stone Cutter for the pinfall victory.  Legend grabbed the microphone after the match and demanded a Legend/Snuka v. Basham Brothers match at The Big One!  Looks like AMW will have to find another match.

(We go once again to the backstage interview area, which has now been cleared
of unconscious Matt Hardys.  Prince Nana sits on a chair.)

Prince Nana: Good evening.  I am here now to make a major announcement.  The
Royal Court, which is the oldest stable in NDW today... is no more.  I have had
all I can take of The Undertaker only looking out for himself!  So I have left!
Furthermore, I will be facing him next week at The Big One in San Francisco!  I
don't care whether you want to see the match or not, this is personal.  I will
show The Undertaker that I am worthy of his respect, and that he has made a
grave mistake in driving me away!

The winners are Xavier and Insane Dragon. Time of match: 0:15:03

Xavier and Insane Dragon defeated Sean O'Haire and Damian 666 when Xavier
pinned Damian 666 after an Asai moonsault in 0:15:03.
Rating: **

Xavier and Insane Dragon (who was substituting for Chance Beckett, presently out with an elbow injury) really took it to the new pairing of Sean O'Haire and Damian 666.  Though neither team had much experience working together, the skill of Xavier was sufficient to pick up the victory for his side following an Asai Moonsault to Damian 666.

Four Corners Match:
Ron Simmons defeated Red, Funaki and Chuck Palumbo when R. Simmons pinned Red
after a powerslam in 0:29:19.
Rating: ** 3/4

What can be said about this match?  In the 30 minutes it lasted, we saw such varied scenes as Palumbo and Simmons brawling on the outside, The Amazing Red taking on his tag team partner Funaki in a high speed cruiserweight style exchange, and more.  Finally, Ron Simmons managed to get the victory after the Dominator and a powerslam to Red.  Red is very highly ranked, so this victory will do wonders for Simmons' spot.

The ring is quickly filling up with debris.

The winner is New Jack. Time of match: 0:16:29

New Jack pinned Billy Gunn with the Diving Headbutt in 0:16:29.
Rating: * 1/4

This was a very even brawl between two noted brawlers until New Jack went for brass knuckles, knocked out Gunn with them, hit the Diving Headbutt for good measure, and pinned him for a quick three.  After such a crooked victory, a match between Hardcore Hell and Billy And Chuck seems likely some time in the future.

"The Prince of Darkness" The Undertaker vs. Ron "The Truth" Killings

Ron Killings pinned The Undertaker after an ax kick in 0:01:36.
Rating: * 1/2

What an upset!  Ron "The Truth" Killings takes out The Prince of Darkness in just over a minute and a half with an axe kick!  The Undertaker's mind must have been on his situation with Prince Nana for him to lose so quickly - and that's nothing against Killings!  Ron Killings is, after all, a former NWA World Heavyweight Champion.  But the Undertaker has never lost so quickly in NDW.  Needless to say, this is a huge victory for Ron Killings.

(We go now to a video package.)

One is the most dominant wrestler in New Deal Wrestling today...

(Images of Bob Sapp standing victorious over Edge holding the Global
Heavyweight Title overhead are shown.)

The other is a sadistic, manipulative man with a taste for power...

(Julio Dinero is shown in the center of the ring after his shocking Rumble in
the Bronx victory.)

But what happens when The Unstoppable Force...

(We shift back to a series of shots of Bob Sapp hitting power moves on
opponents.  Deranged is locked in a Torture Rack, Shane Douglas is power
bombed, and a variety of people are hit with his devestating Diving Headbutt.)

Meets a man who will do anything to win?

(Scenes of Overpower beating down opponents dating back six months are shown,
then more recent footage of Dinero hitting the STO to several foes on the
concrete floor.  Finally, we see Dinero standing over a bloodied Bob Sapp
holding a steel chair high.)

Find out next week, at The Big One...

(The video closes with an aerial approach to San Francisco at night.)

Project Wunderkind (Alex Wright and Jay Briscoe) and Slash defeated
Edge, Bob Sapp and Julio Dinero when A. Wright pinned Edge after the
Wonderweapon in 0:20:02.
Rating: **** 1/2

Matt Hardy's replacement appears to be Slash.

What a match between these six athletes!  Slash, Wright and Briscoe worked together like a well oiled machine, while it was all Edge, Sapp and Dinero could do not to explode into a fight at any given moment.  Because of this, little effort was made to coordinate their plans, and Project Wunderkind and Slash were able to simply overwhelm their foes using quick tags.

Eventually, Julio Dinero and Bob Sapp came to blows and began to brawl outside the ring, leaving Edge unable to tag out.  He fought valiantly, hitting several Spears to no avail.  Finally, after Project Wunderkind hit him with the second Wonderweapon of the evening, even Edge couldn't kick out again.

Outside of the ring, Sapp appears to be getting the best of Dinero despite Dinero trying to use Sapp's title as a weapon.  Then, in a totally predictable moment, Overpower came pouring out of the back and cleared the ring.  Sapp was quickly laid out, then Dinero spiked him into the ground with an STO onto a steel chair!

As Edge stirs, A-Train and Ahmed Johnson enter the ring and begin to stomp away at him.  Suddenly, Matt Hardy's music hits and the Sensai of Mattitude sprints to the ring with a steel chair, clearing it in several seconds.  Grabbing a microphone, he shouts out "Edge is mine, and I want him able to compete next week!"  As Edge staggers to his feet, Hardy continues.  "But THIS is for ambushing me in the back!"

Twist of Fate!  Edge is out cold!  And we are out of time!  We'll see you at The Big One!

Card rating: ** 1/2

Match observations:

Match of the Evening: Slash, Jay Briscoe and Alex Wright vs. Edge, Bob Sapp and Julio Dinero

The Big One is next week, and just as its name would indicate, it's going to be huge!

Edge and Matt Hardy have been at each others throats for six months now.  Finally, though, we will see the end to this lengthy feud as they face off in a ladder match with a 60 minute time limit.  Will Matt Hardy finally gain revenge against Edge, or will Edge shut Hardy up once and for all?  Whoever wins, it should be good.  Plus, as added incentive, the winner of this match will become the top contender for the first Global Heavyweight Title defense after The Big One!

Hacksaw Jim Duggan and Sgt. Slaughter surprised fans by being the new team brought in by management!  Not only was their appearance a surprise, but so was their victory over Tag Team Champions Johnny Ace and Shane Douglas!  They have therefore earned a title shot next week, and Overpower will have to bring their A Game if they want to retain their titles against these patriotic veterans.

Also next week, The Future will face off against Project Wunderkind.  This match will determine the new top contenders to the Tag Team Titles after The Big One, so it's definately a high stakes matchup.  Unfortunately, it isn't certain whether Chance Beckett will be healthy enough to compete, so Xavier may well need to find a substitute once again.

Sean O'Haire and Damian 666 put on quite a showing this week, and they have therefore earned themselves a match at The Big One, where they will face A-Train and Ahmed Johnson.  This one could get ugly in more ways than one!

The Amazing Red and Funaki will be taking on Hardcore Hell next week.  These two teams have faced each other a number of times, and they have always delivered exciting matches.  This one should be no exception.

Shane Douglas has agreed to wrestle twice at The Big One, with his second match being against exciting high flier Deranged.  Will the Franchise be able to win two matches in one evening?

The Basham Brothers will face off against Legend and Jimmy Snuka in an attempt to teach the arrogant duo some respect for New Deal Wrestling.  Will they come out on top, or will Legend and Snuka continue to tear through the undercard?

Prince Nana has officially left The Royal Court, and he has demanded a match against The Undertaker.  Management has granted this match, which the prideful Prince Nana hopes will ease the sting of the fall of the Court with a noteworthy victory.  Who will be victorious?  Order the PPV to find out!

Finally, in our main event, Bob Sapp will put the Global Heavyweight Title on the line against the sadistic Julio Dinero.  Dinero will do anything to hold the gold, but Bob Sapp has proved to be nearly unstoppable in the ring.  Will Julio Dinero realize his destiny by taking the title?  Or will Sapp roll over him like he has so many others?

There's only one way to find out.  Please join us for our very first Pay Per View live from San Francisco.  We'll see you at The Big One.

Were Duggan and Slaughter a result of the "mystery wrestler" button? Could have been the Rock'n'Roll Express, could have been the Bulldogs, could have been the Road Warriors... oh well. ;)

Anyway, main made up for all that, and the one that really intrigues me now is Edge vs Hardy. Edge is the obvious favourite, this is his specialty match, but I have a sneaking suspicion Hardy might take this.
Critic of the DawnPosted on 08/29/04 at 00:26:18

Yep.  The good old trusty M key gave me Duggan and Slaughter.  The scary thing is that with a 50 workrate, Duggan is the better worker on the team.  I suspect that I'm either going to have a lot of fun with Team USA, or that I'm going to absolutely hate them.  And, of course, they get a title shot at NDW's biggest show ever despite NDW's strong tag team division full of credible contenders.  Naturally. ;D  Stupid M key...

As for Edge vs. Hardy, Hardy has been in his share of ladder matches as well, just not in NDW.  Glad you like their feud, though.  It's been going strong for 20 weeks, and as such it needed much less to make it an attraction than the main event.  Luckily, I feel like I've built enough interest for that.  I've got no clue who's going to win this one, and really, that's the way I like it.

You really have some interesting stuff going here.  Edge/Hardy is a really good feud, and you have no idea how much I'm marking out for Team USA.  The Big One has shaped up to be a nice little card.  Looking forward to it.
