NDW Week 47 - Here Comes A New Challenger!

Critic of the DawnPosted on 08/23/04 at 04:08:08

Wow. This card was pretty eventful, and after all that happened I felt a bit guilty about skipping last week. It couldn't be helped, however, as I've been moving my data over to a new computer and I wanted to have everything set up correctly. Turns out that there are still a few minor issues, but nothing I can't handle. Unless something surprising happens, NDW should continue to release a card a week. In that case, it'll be 2 weeks until The Big One, which has me pretty excited. The card is definately taking shape.

Anyway, here we go.

a Fujiwara armbar in 0:06:35.
Rating: 3/4*
[Julio Dinero interfered against Doug Basham.]

Overpower came into this with a lot to prove, but Doug Basham managed to overcome Ahmed Johnson when the interference of his stablemates backfired. A cast iron skillet was passed to Johnson, but Basham ducked the swing, took it, and brained Ahmed Johnson with it. This took a lot of the wind out of Johnson's sails, and was instrumental in allowing Basham to trap him in a Fujiwara Armbar long enough for Johnson to pass out.

(Matt Hardy's entrance music hits, and the Sensei of Mattitude makes his way
alone to the ring with a microphone.)

Matt Hardy: Edge! Get out here! I've discovered something that might interest
you. So if you're not too busy chasing red herrings, get your ass out to this
ring!

(Edge's music hits, and he makes his way to the ring and jaws with Hardy.)

Edge: I'm not in the mood to play, Matt. What do you want?

Matt Hardy: I thought you'd want to know. I solved the great mystery! I know
who stole the ladder and cost you your title! Would you like to know who it
was, Edge?

Edge: You know damn well I want to know. Spit it out before I beat it out of
you.

Matt Hardy: It's a pity that you don't have more patience, but we're not here
to talk about your lack of positive Mattributes. I'm here to tell you who
stole your ladder. And I'm through stalling. Now I'm going to ask the thief
to make her way to the ring!

(Lita's music hits, and she dances her way toward the ring to a chorus of
boos. Edge watches her approach furiously.)

Matt Hardy: You see, Edge, I told you that I didn't take your ladder! That was
true. But it took a lot of Mattitude to pull off something like that! And the
only one here with as much Mattitude as me...

Lita: ...Is me!

(Edge, fuming, advances on Lita who backs away nervously.)

Edge: Why'd you do it, Lita?

Lita: Because you've been making Matt's life miserable since you started your
little feud with him. I was just evening the score by taking something
precious to you!

(Edge grabs Lita by the hair.)

Edge: You're going to pay for that, you little bitch!

(Suddenly, Edge is cut off by a kick to the groin by Lita, then taken down by
a Twist of Fate by Matt Hardy.)

Matt Hardy: Don't *ever* touch Lita, Edge. Let me tell you. All of this was
just the beginning. At The Big One, I'm going to end this once and for all.
I will finally give you the beating you deserve, and if management will approve
it, it's going to be a Ladder Match!

Rating: ***
(Billy Gunn no-showed.)

Billy Gunn was unable to compete tonight due to a schedule conflict, but Chris "HAIL" Sabin was able to take his place against the always dangerous duo of The Undertaker and Prince Nana. While Palumbo and Sabin had no experience tagging together, they worked well enough together to allow the match to end with a time limit draw.

The real news came after the match, however. As Palumbo and Sabin left the ring, The Undertaker got in Prince Nana's face about failing to prevent the count near the end of the match from being broken up. Nana protested that he couldn't possibly have made it... and The Undertaker laid him out with a Choke Slam! The Royal Court has exploded right here in front of us! What a night!

Xavier came out on top here against newcomer Damian 666, although the match was much closer than anyone would have expected. Indeed, Damian managed to score with his finisher, but Xavier showed the tenacity that makes him so dangerous by kicking out and then beating Damian on the outside before making him Kiss his X Goodbye.

(Bob Sapp's music hits and the champ makes his way out to the ring. Sapp has
a bandage on his forehead where Dinero busted him open with a chair last week.)

Bob Sapp: A lot of people are talking. A lot of people are saying it was
stupid of me to make so many enemies right before The Big One. Some are even
saying that if it weren't for Lita stealing the ladder, I wouldn't be champion
today. Personally, I don't give a damn what people are saying. I came here to
dominate the competition, and Dinero... you just became competition. You can
throw all the big scary lackies at me that you want, because I am bigger and I
am badder than anyone else out there today. And that includes all of your
clowns. I am an unstoppable force, Dinero. You are a tag team wrestler who
got lucky in the Rumble in the Bronx and then got caught up in your own hype.
Face it Dinero. You aren't in my league. And at The Big One, at New Deal
Wrestling's biggest show ever, I will prove that by taking you to a world of
pain you've never experienced. Be ready.

Rating: ** 3/4
[Nidia interfered against Chance Beckett.]

This match should probably have gone much longer, but it appears that Chance Beckett hurt his elbow partway through. Nevertheless, he was able to fight on and score with a reverse neckbreaker out of nowhere to defeat Sean O'Haire.

Trainers are examining his injury, and should be able to tell how bad it will be by the end of the show.

Rating: ** 1/4

Bob Sapp took on Alex Wright here in non-title action, and things shockingly appeared to be going in favor of Wright throughout the early match. The momentum shifted with a long torture rack by Sapp, and apparently this hurt Alex Wright badly enough that he couldn't hit his Reverse Neckbreaker. Shortly after this failed attempt, Bob Sapp put Wright away with his Diving Headbutt.

(Chris Harris and James Storm are seen backstage.)

Chris Harris: Apparently management has brought in a new team to face us for
our Global Tag Team Titles tonight. A team that they think will take us to
our limits.

James Storm: Well, we just wanted to say that whoever you are, we will beat
you. AMW is the hottest team running today, and no matter who you are or how
good you are, you're no match for us. But good luck to you. It'll be a
pleasure to face some new competition.

In just over 11 minutes, Overpower has convincingly defeated 3 of NDW's top high fliers. Rating: ***
(Johnny Ace and Shane Douglas won the Global Tag Team Titles.)

What the... but Johnny Ace doesn't work for NDW anymore! Shane Douglas turned on him! Douglas must have been able to convince him to return, because he was here, and even worse, he was wearing an Overpower T-Shirt!

America's Most Wanted were very close to a victory here, but Ace managed to score a roll up out of nowhere, and in three seconds the Global Tag Team Titles belonged to Overpower! Following the match, Dinero, Johnson and A-Train made their way out to the ring and celebrated with their allies.

Is this a prelude of The Big One? Will Dinero pull out an upset like Douglas and Ace did? We are out of time!

Card rating: ** 3/4

Match observations:

Match of the Evening: Xavier vs. Damian 666

What a night of shocks! First Matt Hardy revealed that Lita had stolen the ladder at his bidding, and that he would face Edge at The Big One in a Ladder Match. Then The Royal Court exploded, with Undertaker losing his cool and Choke Slamming Prince Nana. And finally, Johnny Ace returned to NDW as part of Overpower and actually won the Global Tag Team Titles with Shane Douglas!

Next week is the final show before The Big One in San Francisco, and as such it should be huge.

Doug Basham will start things off when he faces Psicosis in what should be a fun little match. Psicosis and Doug Basham have both been having trouble with Overpower lately, so they've got a good deal in common.

Sean O'Haire will again team up with his new partner Damian 666 against The Future. Unfortunately, Chance Beckett seems to be too hurt to compete, so Xavier will have to find a replacement. Will he be able to, and if so who will it be?

Overpower's Shane Douglas and Johnny Ace were once a team in WCW by the name of The Dynamic Dudes. This duo has reunited under the banner of Overpower and now holds the Global Tag Team Titles. NDW management has promised another surprise and has booked another new team to face this pairing in a non-title match. Who will they come up with this time? Can it top this week's surprise?

Deranged and Marcos will team up against the duo of A-Train and Ahmed Johnson in a match pitting sheer power against blazing speed. Will Overpower gain another victory here? We shall see.

Finally, NDW management has ruled that Bob Sapp must team up with Julio Dinero and Edge to face Matt Hardy, Jay Briscoe and Alex Wright in a six-man tag team match. Can Sapp, Dinero and Edge coexist? Or will the team crumble? There's only one way to find out!

See you next week.

Cool show... I loved the return of Johnny Ace.

Your storylines are pretty well written too.
Critic of the DawnPosted on 08/23/04 at 17:36:55

It was definately a surprise to me that TNM chose The Dynamic Dudes as the mystery team, especially since Shane Douglas already works for NDW and Johnny Ace actually did briefly at one point as well until Douglas turned on him and joined Overpower.  I guess Douglas was able to convince Ace that Overpower was the next big thing.  Needless to say, it took me a few minutes to decide how to explain that one. ;D

Thanks for the compliment about the storylines here.  One of the neat things about using a ruleset is that a lot of them pretty much write themself.  The really fun ones are the ones you have to scramble to explain, though - the whole ladder theft thing is an example of this.

Overall, this was a very eventful card - even more than I had expected since Ace made a surprise return.

Eric "Critic of the Dawn"

So it was Lita all along... what a cow. On reflection, it was an obvious one, but I was too predisposed with looking at the roster of wrestlers you were using for an answer.
Critic of the DawnPosted on 08/24/04 at 05:33:36

Heh.  Even I tend to sometimes forget that Matt Hardy has Lita to do his dirty work since she doesn't interfere too heavily in his matches.  I thought having Matt Hardy do the deed would be a bit too obvious, so instead he denied it even though it was technically his idea.

Actually, this was only one of two possible outcomes.  If James Storm had won the Global Heavyweight Title, the culprit actually would have been Julio Dinero, and Bob Sapp would have been in on the crime all along.  Edge would have been denied a match at The Big One due to Dinero already holding the contract for it due to his Rumble in the Bronx win.  The Edge/Hardy match would therefore have been declared a top contender's ironman match instead of a ladder match.

I did, yes.  Thank you very much.

PWA is looking good thus far.  I'll do that.
