NDW Week 46 - Once Bitten Twice Shy

Critic of the DawnPosted on 08/08/04 at 06:20:26

Pretty much all of my plans for The Big One hinge on the outcome of tonight's Title Match.  And, since I run this circuit unbooked, your guess is as good as mine as to who will win and which way things will turn out.  And I like it that way.  Anyway, I'll spare you the suspense and get right to the card.

Edge pinned Doug Basham after a top-rope Frankensteiner in 0:06:19.
Rating: ***

Both Edge and Doug Basham are fan favorites, and the crowd was clearly pleased to see this rare lockup between babyfaces.  While the match was fairly short, it was very well worked, and Doug Basham actually held an advantage throughout most of it.  The tide turned quickly, however, and Edge's top rope Frankensteiner put an end to Basham tonight.  Following the match, the two men shook hands as the crowd cheered.

(Matt Hardy can be seen walking through the backstage area, when suddenly Edge
comes around a corner and gets in his face.)

Edge: So, you say you cost me my title, Matt...

(Matt Hardy grimaces, and yells right back.)

Matt Hardy: Listen bonehead.  I didn't do anything you don't already know
about!  Yeah, I cost you your title match, but I did it by giving you the sort
of beating that only Matt Hardy, Version 1, can give you!  I made you bleed
like a stuck pig, Edge!  And that left you too weak to fight a man as strong
as Bob Sapp.  But one thing I did not do was steal your ladder!  Because, face
it, I didn't need to, Edge!  You didn't have the Mattributes to come through
in your title defense!

(Edge practically snarls, and it seems that one of the most anticipated matches
from The Big One is going to come early until referees rush into the area and
seperate the two men.)

The verdict: A DOUBLE COUNTOUT !

Overpower (Julio Dinero and Shane Douglas) and Deranged and Marcos battled to a
double countout in 0:08:24.
Rating: ** 1/4

Overpower was clearly in control here, but Dinero seemed to be more concerned with making an example out of someone, and so he and Deranged battled to a Double Count Out.  Moments later, Julio Dinero hit his STO, knocking the young daredevil out cold.

Rating: ** 1/4

Upset!  Alex Wright once again shows his fire by defeating longtime fan favorite and NDW's first longterm signee after a well worked match.  Granted, Das Wunderkind wasn't able to pin or make his opponent submit, but even a countout victory over such a highly ranked member of the roster will raise Wright's status.

Rating: ** 3/4

Two generations of insane high fliers faced off here in this match, and Psicosis proved that his experience was more than a match for Insane Dragon's frantic spots.  This one was solidly Psicosis for most of it, though Dragon did manage to hit a few impressive moves of his own.  Matches like this continue to prove why Psicosis is such a good fit in NDW.

Rating: -* 3/4

This atrocious brawl ended when Ron Simmons managed to score the Dominator on the outside, stunning Johnson long enough to roll him back into the ring, hit it again, and pick up the pinfall victory.  Johnson was on offense for the majority of the match, but Simmons' experience allowed him to turn it around.

(Backstage, The Undertaker can be seen brooding as is his wont.  After a
moment, Prince Nana enters the locker room.)

Prince Nana: Ah, Undertaker.  There you are!  I was looking for you.  Listen,
we need to talk, and we need to do it here and now.

The Undertaker: What do you want, Nana.

Prince Nana: I need to know your plans for the Royal Court, Undertaker.  Things
seem to be going downhill fast, and it seems like your attention is elsewhere.

The Undertaker: The Royal Court as it is now exists only as a vehicle to place
me in contention for the Global Heavyweight Title, Nana.  As your leader, I
expect you to do all you can to ensure that happens.

Prince Nana: You call yourself a leader.  You aren't leading anywhere, 'Taker!
All you are doing is hogging the spotlight and letting the group fall apart
around you!

The Undertaker: And I take it you think we should expand and pursue the tag
team titles, then?

Prince Nana: Of course!  If you want my loyalty, you have to do something for
me!  Perhaps you have forgotten, Undertaker, but I am the Prince of Ghana!  I
do not have to put up with you if you are not going to work to my advantage!

(The Undertaker scowls and reaches out a hand, shoving Nana against a wall with
a hand at his throat as if going for the Choke Slam.)

The Undertaker: You may be a Prince in Ghana, Nana.  But here, you are the
servant!  Do not forget that!

Rating: *** 1/2

Excellent tag team match.  It's clear that Damian 666 and Sean O'Haire didn't have much experience working together, as Slash and New Jack were easily able to dominate the match for the duration, although there were a few moments when it appeared that Sean O'Haire might have turned the tide.  Unfortunately, it wasn't to be.  A Diving Headbutt later, and O'Haire and Damian had lost their first match as a team.

[Shane Douglas and Ahmed Johnson interfered against Ron Killings.]

Brutal, just brutal.  This match wasn't even remotely fair, and Overpower was able to effortlessly dismantle Ron "The Truth" Killings without even breaking a sweat through some very effective interference led by Shane Dougals.  Overpower is clearly becoming extremely effective at working together, and that is becoming increasingly dangerous for NDW's fan favorites.

(Xavier's music hits and he makes his way to the ring.)

Xavier: Before our main event, I just thought I'd come out here and get
something straight.  Chris Harris, James Storm... last week you got lucky
against us.  All the same, you won fair and square.  As a result, management
tells me we've had our last shot at the titles for the time being.  But guys...
and everyone else here, from Bob Sapp to the fans... don't forget.  You never
know when the future will arrive.  I'll be waiting in the wings to regain the
gold.  Whether it be the Global Heavyweight Title, or the Global Tag Team Titles
with Chance Beckett, I will be victorious once again.  The Future cannot be
stopped!

(Bob Sapp retained the Global Heavyweight Title.)

Bob Sapp retains the Global Heavyweight Title after a very close match.  It can safely be said that only Sapp's sheer size saved the title for him, because James Storm was unable to lift him to hit the Eight Second Ride.  Sapp didn't have that handicap to worry about, however, so after 2 Diving Headbutt's, the last challenger before The Big One had fallen.

Within seconds of the match ending, Overpower hit the ring and took down the battered James Storm.  As Storm was laid out with a Train Wreck, Julio Dinero approached Bob Sapp and held out a hand of friendship...

Only to be met by Bob Sapp's huge right hand directly to the face!  The crowd explodes in cheers as Bob Sapp knocks down Julio Dinero, then singlehandedly takes on Overpower.  Power Bomb to Shane Douglas!  Diving Headbutt to A-Train!  And Sapp hoists up Ahmed Johnson and puts him in the Torture Rack!  He turns... and WHAM, steel chair directly to the face by Julio Dinero.  Sapp is down and bleeding as Julio Dinero stands over him and holds the chair high!

And we are out of time!

Match observations:

Match of the Evening: Sean O'Haire & Damian 666 vs. Hardcore Hell

With only three weeks remaining after tonight's show to The Big One in San Francisco, quite an impact has been made.  The main event is now clear - Julio Dinero will take on defending Global Heavyweight Champion Bob Sapp, who has spurned Dinero's attempts to recruit him into Overpower.

Next week will kick off with Doug Basham facing Ahmed Johnson in what is sure to be a stiff contest.  Overpower is beginning to pick up steam now; will Basham be their latest victim?

Also next week, A-Train, Shane Douglas & Julio Dinero will take on Deranged, Marcos & Psicosis.  This battle of high fliers against the ever dangerous team of Overpower should prove to be quite exciting.

Sean O'Haire will be facing Chance Beckett next week in singles action, and his new partner Damian 666 will face Xavier.  Both of these matches should prove to be exciting, as all four of these workers are capable of excellent matches.

The Amazing Red and Funaki, now known collectively as Flying Tigers, will have a hell of a challenge next week - literally.  They will square off against Hardcore Hell.  Speaking of hell, The Dark Princes will face off against Billy And Chuck in another tag team match next week.  It should be an interesting one.

Finally, America's Most Wanted will be defending the Global Tag Team Titles for the last time before The Big One.  Who will contend for them?  Not even AMW know yet, but rumor has it that it will be a newly debuting team!

Tune in.

hmm..  the quote from Hardy makes me think that the ladder thief was Sean O'Haire, but I'm not telling you anything you didn't already know.  ;)

Taker and Nana seem to be headed into a faceoff in the near future.

And Edge vs Hardy should not disappoint even if we have some interference from a guest(s).

And Sapp taking on Overpower single-handedly may not be the smartest of moves if he wants to have a long reign as champ.  And as you said during the card, they are quickly becoming a force to reckon with in NDW.

I am looking forward to The Big One.
Critic of the DawnPosted on 08/09/04 at 01:30:30

Interesting theory about the ladder thief, Rick.  I won't say if you're right or not, but what I will say is that the thief will be revealed next week!

'Taker and Nana are definately coming into conflict as the Royal Court goes through its final death throes.  A match between the two at The Big One seems pretty likely at this point.

Edge and Hardy definately won't dissappoint - they haven't yet, after all.  This should be the blowoff match to their excellent feud, and as such it's one of the biggest draws going into The Big One.

Sapp may very well have made a mistake here, but by taking on Overpower, he's positioned himself as the face in the match which will headline NDW's biggest show ever.  And, really, the main event deserves better than a squash match, and Julio Dinero on his own is hardly the most intimidating wrestler in the company.  Hence the somewhat rash decision by Sapp.  I'm sure he'll be able to find allies of his own, however.
