NDW Week 44 - Ragnarok

Critic of the DawnPosted on 07/23/04 at 21:25:46

I was a bit surprised by how the main event went because I apparently forgot to check that it was a ladder match when booking the finish (as usual, I just gave a time, not an actual winner).  So my ladder match was a bit less laddery than I generally like.  Still, I think I can work with it pretty well, and it leaves me with an interesting storyline to build into The Big One.

So... yeah.  Here's the show.

(The Future won the Global Tag Team Titles.)

Here are your winners, and the NEW Global Tag Team Champions: Chance Beckett, Xavier... THE FUTURE!

Just as Xavier had promised The Future defeated America's Most Wanted tonight in a rematch of their Caged Fury bout several months ago.  This was a fastpaced and exciting opener which got the crowd whipped into a frenzy as holds and counterholds were traded inside the dangerous environment of the steel cage.  In the end, The Future got the victory after Beckett choked out his opponent with a camel clutch.  Once again AMW was distracted by making sure that he was okay, and The Future managed to escape the cage.

(Insane Dragon no-showed.)

Insane Dragon was scheduled to return to the ring tonight, but his doctor advised that we give him one more week to recover, so against his wishes he was replaced by Jay Briscoe tonight.

Ron Simmons is one hell of a tough old bastard, as he came back from a J-Driller through a table to pick up the victory here after only a few moments to recover.  Simmons definately has what it takes to be a major NDW player, and we hope that contract negotiations this week go well so we can see some more of him in the future.

Marcos fought The Undertaker in a no-DQ match, and unsurprisingly the 'Taker utterly crushed him, shrugging off most of his offense and battering the rookie until a Tombstone mercifully ended the battle.  The Undertaker came out alone, fought alone, and returned to the back alone - not a good sign for the Royal Court...

Julio Dinero comes out on top here, but Danny Basham never actually said that he quit.  Instead, after a lenghty battle, Dinero's valet Alexis Laree smashed Basham with a chair, stunning him.  Dinero connected with an STO seconds later, and Danny Basham was out like a light.  Dinero locked in an octopus hold on his unconscious foe, and the referee called for the bell to prevent him from being injured.

[The Undertaker interfered against Psicosis.]

That was a short one.  The interference of the Royal Court here distracted Ron Killings and Psicosis enough for Superfly Snuka and Legend to score with an effective combo for a quick pinfall victory.  But why the interference?  Is The Undertaker courting (no pun intended) Legend and Snuka for entrance into The Royal Court?

(We go backstage where Julio Dinero is still celebrating his victory over Danny
Basham.)

Julio Dinero: That was a great victory... but it's only the beginning.  I'm
ready now.  I'm ready for The Big One.  Before I might not have been, but now
I'm psyched.  Let me just tell you all, when I hit the STO and showed Danny
Basham the power of the dollar, I could feel him shuddering as he lost
consciousness.  And I liked it.  I could feel his muscles tearing as I locked
in the octopus stretch, and I loved it.  So Edge... Sapp... whichever one of
you that I have to face... be careful.  I'm not just some bastard who got
lucky!  I'm the next big thing!  I'm the brightest star in NDW!  And I'm the
next Global Heavyweight Champion!

First Blood No-Countout-No-DQ-Match:

Rating: ***

Matt Hardy picks up a quick victory here over Edge after slamming his head into the guardrail and busting him open.  However, he ate an Edgecution on the concrete for his trouble.  Even though the match lasted less than 5 minutes, both men were fairly heavily battered and bruised after the end.

This was quite unfortunate for Edge.  Not only does Matt Hardy pick up a victory over him, but he has to go into his title match against Bob Sapp this evening having lost blood.

(As a bloodied Edge makes his eay to the back, James Storm approaches.)

James Storm: Hey, Edge.  Tough break there.  You okay, man?

Edge: What?  Yeah, I'm fine.  Just a bit shaken up.  What's up, Storm?

James Storm: I just wanted to wish you luck against Bob Sapp.  He's a monster,
man.

Edge: So I hear.  But he's too big to do well in a ladder match.  So I think my
title is safe...

James Storm: Hey, about your title...

Edge: Yeah?

James Storm: I want a shot, Edge.  You know I'm good enough.

Edge: That's not my decision, James.  Talk to management.  I personally like
the idea, and I'll pass the word along.  But it's really their call.  I'm
sorry.

This match was all Red vs. New Jack, with the rest of the competitors being eliminated in short order.  Despite the hardcore experience of New Jack, The Amazing Red was just far too fast for him, and thus was finally able to put New Jack through a table after more than 35 minutes.

(The Future's music hits and the new tag team champions make their way to the
ring.)

Xavier: Well well well.  Just like I said, AMW had to kiss their titles goodbye
tonight.  And there's a reason for that.

Chance Beckett: The reason is that Xavier and I are the future of this sport.
Big guys like Harris and Storm are on their way out.  Smaller, faster, hard
hitting guys like Xavier an' me will rule this business in the next few years.

Xavier: Harris, Storm, all of this is nothing personal.  It's just business.
And it's a shame that you have to be the ones to fall so that we can forge a
path to a golden future.

Chance Beckett: That's why we're offering you a rematch next week.  And, just
to show we're good guys, we won't even try to impose a stipulation.  Just show
up, and we'll show you that our victory wasn't a fluke.

Xavier: The Future is now.

Cage?  What cage?

Well, apparently the ladder that NDW brought to the event was unexpectedly stolen from under the ring at some point, and this was only discovered about 5 minutes into the title match.  This prompted a change of sorts as the cage was once again lowered for a second cage match this evening.

Very bad news for Edge.  Instead of being able to take advantage of his speed advantage, Edge was trapped in a cage and absolutely savaged by The Unstoppable Force.  Still, he fought valiantly and refused to stay down even as he bled heavily.  It took 45 minutes for Sapp to finally put the gutsy champion down, climb out of the cage, and be presented with the Global Heavyweight Champion himself.

Ladies and gentlemen, here is your new Global Heavyweight Champion, Bob Sapp!

Card rating: *** 1/4

Match observations:

Match of the Evening: Bob Sapp vs. Edge

We have a new Global Heavyweight Champion!  But what happened with the main event?  Who took NDW's ladder and almost certainly cost Edge the match?  We'll begin to investigate this next week.

Also next week, Doug Basham will face off against A-Train in what is certain to be a hard hitting contest.  Hopefully Basham will be able to get a bit of revenge for his brother's loss.

Additionally, top contender Julio Dinero will team up with new Global Heavyweight Champion Bob Sapp to take on the team of Billy and Chuck.  Will Dinero and Sapp be able to coexist?  Or is there some connection between them?

The Dark Princes will be in action next week, taking on the pairing of Deranged and Marcos.  Is everything okay within the Royal Court?  Or will we see further breakdowns in communications?

Jay Brisco will face off against a newly debuting wrestler next week.  Who will it be?  Tune in to see!

The Amazing Red and New Jack had an impressive bout in the tables elimination match this evening.  Next week they will meet each other one on one, and Funaki will face Slash.

Finally, the Global Tag Team Titles will be on the line as The Future once again defends against America's Most Wanted.  You won't want to miss it.

Wow, that was quite a main event. Invariably that slight booking mistake could lead into quite an angle - we all know Edges successful history with ladder matches and he could have been a favourite before the switch, so the question really is - who stole the ladder? And the backup, they always have backups. ;)

Edge was definately the favorite going into the match - Bob Sapp is 375 lbs, after all, and that isn't conducive to climbing ladders quickly.  In a cage, on the other hand, that 375 pounds becomes a massive asset.

So, yeah.  Edge was screwed here.  But by who?  Well, who do you think?  Who has something to gain from Edge's misfortune?  ;D

Well Sapp obviously. Then again, based on the events earlier in the evening, James Storm (or partner Chris Harris perhaps) or even Julio Dinero might have something to say about that. Possibly even Matt Hardy if Edge pissed him off enough during their match.

Well, obviously Sapp gained from it.  He beat the hell out of Edge and won the Global Heavyweight Title.  However, subtlety is not exactly his forte, so he seems pretty unlikely.

James Storm (or Chris Harris) is a possibility I hadn't thought of.  I'll have to give it some thought.  THe problem with turning AMW heel, however, is that they're presently my top face tag team by far, and I'm not sure who I'd elevate to replace them.

Julio Dinero... well, he *is* trying to make an impact, and he *is* teaming up with Bob Sapp next week.  Some sort of connection there seems quite possible.

As for Matt Hardy, well, Hardy has been feuding with Edge for about 6 months now, and for the most part Edge has been coming out on top of those exchanges.  So he seems like a strong possibility as well.

Truth be told, I'm not sure who did it yet.  Whoever it was, it should lead well into The Big One.  I've got a few possible scenarios worked out already, so... yeah.

I think it was Bob Sagat.
