NDW Week 43 - A Calculated Risk

Critic of the DawnPosted on 07/17/04 at 06:01:37

Going into this card I was pretty excited about the Number One Contender's match.  It won't be a good match, but it will be good TV if you take my meaning.  Both Ron Simmons and Bob Sapp are big, strong power based guys who could make things very interesting for Edge next week.  After running this card, I have to say I'm pleased both with the results of the match I mentioned, but also with how good the main event was.

Anyway, I'm rambling.  Here's the card.

The winner is Bob Sapp. Time of match: 0:13:58

Number-One-Contenders-Match:
Bob Sapp pinned Ron Simmons with the Diving Headbutt in 0:13:58.
Rating: 1/4*

This was exactly what was expected: a brutal exchange of stiff punches and power moves between two former World Champions who excel in that style of match.  Ron Simmons used his experience to gain an early advantage with a series of powerslams and some brawling on the outside, but in the end Bob Sapp's youth, size, and sheer power proved to Ron Simmons that he is indeed the Unstoppable Force.  This win makes Bob Sapp the Top Contender to Edge's Global Heavyweight Title at Ragnarok, and Edge may well be hard pressed to stop the unstoppable.  He will have to pick the stipulations of the match very carefully to avoid becoming Sapp's latest victim.

The Dark Princes (The Undertaker and Prince Nana) defeated
Ron Killings and Psicosis when Nana pinned Psicosis after a powerslam in
          0:08:58.
Rating: **

The Dark Princes win!  In a rare display of teamwork, The Undertaker and Prince Nana actually worked together extremely well against Ron Killings and his newly debuted friend "The Madman from Tijuana" Psicosis.  'Taker and Nana double teamed Killings and Psicosis relentlessly, although Psicosis was able to turn the tide several times with his quick luncha-style offense.  In the end, a powerslam out of nowhere by Nana just barely kept Psicosis down for 3, and The Dark Princes picked up the victory.

(We proceed to the locker room, where Chris Harris and James Storm can be
seen.)

James Storm: Are you sure taking on The Future in a Handicap Match is wise,
Chris?  We both know how good they can be - together we're a match for them.
Alone... well, I'm worried.

Chris Harris: It's a calculated risk, James.  If I win the match, we can pick
the stipulation for our title defense against them.  And that gives us the
advantage!

James Storm: I guess so...  Just be careful, Chris.  And remember.  I've got
your back, but I can't fight this one for you.  Be careful!

Chris Harris: You sound like my mother, James.  I'll be fine.  They call me
Wildcat for a reason, you know.

James Storm: I know, I know...  Good luck, man.

Rating: **
[Nunzio interfered against A-Train.]
[Ahmed Johnson and Shane Douglas interfered against Chuck Palumbo.]

A-Train picked up the win in this match after an almost absurd amount of interference both by Overpower and by Chuck Palumbo's manager Nunzio.  The end was a confusing mass of distractions by Nunzio and sneak attacks by Overpower, but apparently A-Train was able to render Chuck Palumbo unconscious somehow and lock him in a chinlock for the victory.

An excellent display of chain wrestling between three of New Deal Wrestling's most senior workers.  Despite how hard each man worked, they were each just too good to be defeated before the time limit ended tonight.

(We go back to the locker room once again, where Chris Harris is trying to
focus and prepare for his match.  Suddenly there is a loud knock and Alex
Wright tries to storm in.  James Storm moves to intercept.)

James Storm: Hey, hold up!  This is our locker room, what do you think you're
doing?

Alex Wright: Clear the way, "Cowboy!"  Das Wunderkind needs to use Das
Badezimmer!

James Storm:  What the hell are you talking about!

Alex Wright: I need to use your bathroom, so get the hell out of my way!

James Storm: There's one right across the hall, you idiot.  Chris is trying to
prepare himself for his match.

Alex Wright: Oh, did I interrupt your little love session?  I'm so sorry!  I'll
leave you and your "special friend" alone!

James Storm: Very funny, Wright.  Still, your presence here has made a certain
amount of sense.  After all, ever since Chris Hero carried your ass to a good
match, every single match you've wrestled has been an excuse for a bathroom
break.

Alex Wright: That's it!  I want you in a match later tonight, Storm!  Somebody
needs to teach you that there is no place for cowboys in modern society!  Or in
politics, for that matter!

James Storm: Hey, leave the "I'm an evil foreigner who hates the American
Government" gimmick for WWE, okay?  And you're on.  I'll see you in the ring
tonight!

after the Legendary Splash in 0:18:39.
Rating: *** 3/4

Jimmy Snuka and Legend defeat another young pair of high fliers, this time taking out Deranged and Marcos, whom Deranged seems to have taken under his wing.  This was a back and forth match that looked like it very well might run past the time limit, but a Legendary Splash by Legend and Snuka grabbed the win with less than 2 minutes remaining.

Matt Hardy & Overpower (Julio Dinero & Shane Douglas) vs. Edge & The Basham Brothers

Edge executes the Edgecution on Shane Douglas.
Edge goes for the pin.
Mike Sparks counts: One, two, three.

The Basham Brothers (Doug Basham and Danny Basham) and Edge defeated
Overpower (Julio Dinero and Shane Douglas) and Matt Hardy when Edge pinned
Douglas with the Edgecution in 0:09:22.
Rating: *** 1/2

The Global Heavyweight Champion ends this one quickly, spiking Overpower's advisor Shane Douglas with a blazing fast Edgecution for an easy pin.  Edge has really stepped up his game as of late, and it's quite obvious that he deserves the belt he wears.

(As Edge and company head to the back, Julio Dinero stands over Shane Douglas
and grabs a microphone.)

Julio Dinero: You got lucky, Edge!  If that had been me in the ring, I would
have gotten clear and taken you down with the STO, easy.  But it wasn't.  It
was The Franchise here, and even he knows that he's past his prime!

(Shane Douglas stirs, gets to his feet, and grabs the microphone.)

Shane Douglas: What the hell are you talking about, Dinero?

Julio Dinero: I was telling Edge that it was your fault that I lost the match,
and that when he faced me-

Shane Douglas: Shut up, Dinero.  If you want to actually matter, you can't make
excuses for losing.  You have to get revenge.  Actions speak louder than words.
You know that.

Julio Dinero: Fine.  Edge, you had best pray that Bob Sapp defeats you next
week at Ragnarok, because if we meet at The Big One... well, let's just say
that it'll end with you taking an extended vacation.

Billy Gunn defeated Ahmed Johnson by countout in 0:14:18.
Rating: -* 3/4

Billy Gunn comes out on top of The Pearl River Powerhouse after an absolutely brutal match (in more ways than one).  It looked like Ahmed Johnson had this one handily in the bag, however Gunn was able to score a Fame-Ass-Er out of nowhere.  Johnson kicked out, but he was clearly stunned by the move, because in short order he was knocked out of the ring and unable to beat the ten count.

Rating: *
[Funaki interfered against Slash.]

Well, that was short.  Funaki apparently was expecting treachery, so he came to ringside and hit Slash with a chair, allowing Red to gain a quick win with the InfraRed.  Sure enough, New Jack made his way out moments later with a chair of his own and began swinging wildly, sending Red and Funaki scattering.  A match between these two teams at Ragnarok would not be out of the question.

James Storm pinned Alex Wright with the 8 Second Ride in 0:10:34.
Rating: *** 3/4

James Storm defeats Alex Wright convincingly here.  Wright fought well, but he was simply no match for The Tennessee Cowboy.  One Eight Second Ride later, and Alex Wright was down for the count.

The Future (Chance Beckett and Xavier) defeated Chris Harris when Beckett
pinned C. Harris with the Chance Encounter in 0:23:03.
Rating: **** 1/2

Chris Harris called this match a calculated risk.  Unfortunately, the risk was just too great, and taking on a tag team which has not only dominated the tag team ranks, but is made up of two former Global Heavyweight Champions just didn't pay off.  Once the victory was secured, The Future picked Harris up to try to eliminate him for good...

But wait!  It's James Storm!  Eight Second Ride to Xavier!  Superkick to Chance Beckett!  America's Most Wanted may have lost this battle, but they haven't lost the war!

Card rating: ** 1/2

Match observations:

Match of the Evening:  The Future vs. Chris Harris

Ragnarok comes next week, and fittingly, the entire show will be no DQ.

First, AMW will defend their tag team titles against perpetual challengers The Future in a rematch of their epic Steel Cage match at Caged Fury.  Any match between these two teams is bound to be gold, so this brutal challenge should be extremely exciting.

Next, Ron Simmons will face off against the returning Insane Dragon in a bout that will see sheer power against blazing speed.  Who will come out on top?  We shall see!

Billy and Chuck will team up together once again to take on A-Train and Ahmed Johnson of Overpower.  The fact that it is no-DQ seems to give Overpower a major advantage, but perhaps the fact that the match will be Falls Count Anywhere will work to Billy and Chuck's advantage.

Julio Dinero is looking to gain a measure of revenge for his defeat last week, and while no match has been granted against Edge, he has managed to get approval for an I Quit Match against Danny Basham.  Dinero promises to show Danny the power of the dollar by making him say that he quits in front of the entire world!

Perhaps foolishly, Edge has agreed to face down Matt Hardy once again next week before his title defense.  This time, Edge and Hardy will face off in a First Blood Match!

Things will definately heat up when The Amazing Red, Funaki and Deranged face off against Slash, New Jack, and Shane Douglas in an Elimination Tables 6-Man Tag Team match.  Can the speed and high flying agility of Red, Funaki and Deranged defeat the Hardcore knowhow of their opponents?  Tune in!

Finally, Bob Sapp has managed to secure for himself a shot at the Global Heavyweight Title.  Sapp is a former IWGP Champion, and the moniker of "The Unstoppable Force" may very well be appropriate for him!  Add to that the fact that Edge will already have wrestled another match and things do not look good for our champion.  To ensure an even fight, Edge has been allowed to pick the stipulation, and his choice of a Ladder Match is definately something which will work in his favor because of the importance of speed over brute force.  Will it be enough?  Or will The Unstoppable Force roll over Edge?

Catch Ragnarok to find out!

Owen Hart RIPPosted on 07/17/04 at 07:55:06

Great card, I like how everything just flows together!
91Posted on 07/18/04 at 02:12:15

I was going to say that I was impressed with the effort of Harris in that final match, I seriously thought he was taking that, but on second thought, I'm more impressed with Shane Douglas going through an entire interview without any profanity. Knock off that Billy Gunn match (I'm even more impressed that one :P ) and you've got a great card.
Critic of the DawnPosted on 07/18/04 at 02:51:29

Glad you enjoyed the card, Owen Hart RIP.  I've been impressed with how easy it's been to keep NDW flowing nicely, both within the shows and in a longer term sense.  Rick's ruleset is definately great to work with, and I'm sure a lot of the flow can be attributed to it.  Also helpful is TNM SE's ability to insert commentary after every match rather than just at the end.  I find it makes it easier to follow what's going on there.

Chris Harris put up a hell of a fight in the main event, but really, The Future is made up of two of NDW's most formidable heels.  I didn't personally think much of Harris's chances going into the match, and therefore I wasn't surprised that he was eventually worn down and defeated.  The Future and AMW are definately 2 of New Deal Wrestling's biggest attractions, though, and this match demonstrated why once again.

As for Shane Douglas's lack of profanity... well, NDW is a "classier" promotion than ECW, so to speak.  So to keep him family friendly, we've threatened to make him room with A-Train when NDW goes to California for The Big One.  After that, he was actually so polite that we had to hit him with a chair a few times to keep WWE from suing us for infringing on Brother Love's gimmick.

As for the Billy Gunn match... I'm deriving a sadistic pleasure from creating long lines in the restrooms by pairing up Billy Gunn in matches with Ahmed Johnson.  Also, during that match NDW sold more merchandise than during the entire rest of the show, so I'd argue that it did indeed have a purpose!

If you want long lines in the restrooms, you could also start catering to women. :P ;D
