NDW Week 40 - Shaping Up

Critic of the DawnPosted on 06/23/04 at 04:31:36

It's been a while since I've posted a card, but New Deal Wrestling isn't dead.  It's just slowed down a bit since I've graduated.  I think it's been feeling neglected, as it didn't exactly give me the highest quality card here, and to make matters worse it threw 2 injuries at me.  Luckily both are brief, and I think I can run with them well.  Anyway, here's the card.

*****

Number-One-Contenders-Match:
Best of the Best (Edge and Chris Sabin) defeated
The Future (Chance Beckett and Xavier) when Edge pinned Beckett with the
Edgecution in 0:10:08.
Rating: *** 1/2

They don't call Edge and Chris Sabin the Best of the Best for no reason.  After kicking things off with a fastpaced exchange, Sabin and Xavier tagged in Edge and Beckett, who will meet later tonight for the Global Heavyweight Title.  The ensuing battle was all Edge, with Edge hitting no less than 3 Spears before putting Beckett away with his brutal Edgecution.

Thus, not only has the top contender pinned the champion cleanly already tonight, but sometime soon, Edge and Chris Sabin will take on the dangerous duo of America's Most Wanted in what will surely be a match to remember.

Insane Dragon vs. Doug Basham

Doug Basham defeated Insane Dragon by disqualification in 0:06:50.
Insane Dragon suffered a back injury. He will be out for approximately 4 cards.
Rating: ** 1/4

After last week's beatdown of Sean O'Haire, Doug Basham told Dragon that he would rather team up with his brother than continue working with Dragon.  That prompted this match, which truth be told went quite quickly.  Insane Dragon tried every dirty trick in the book to get the advantage, but in the end he proved unable to do so.  To make matters worse, he got himself disqualified by blatantly pulling Basham's tights.  Unfortunately, Dragon seems to have picked up a minor back injury, and while we don't believe it's serious, he will be taking some time off to rest and rehab it.

Slash vs. Sean O'Haire

Sean O'Haire hits Slash with a kick to the midsection.

The winner is Sean O'Haire. Time of match: 0:11:47

Sean O'Haire pinned Slash after a small package in 0:11:47.
Rating: *** 1/4

New fan favorite Sean O'Haire took on Slash here in a very even brawl, but in the end it was O'Haire who managed to come out on top.  Slash was in the midst of quite a comeback, but after carefully measuring up his chances, O'Haire scored with a simple small package and picked up the W.

Matt Hardy vs. Edge

The crowd is behind Edge all the way.
Edge executes the Edgecution on Matt Hardy.
Edge goes for the pin.
James Beard counts: One, two, three.
The chants for Edge are deafening.

The winner is Edge. Time of match: 0:09:41

Edge pinned Matt Hardy with the Edgecution in 0:09:41.
Rating: ***

Edge picks up his second win of the evening, this time impressively against a fresh Matt Hardy!  The Edgecution that knocked Hardy out came out of nowhere, and the way things were going, if he had avoided it he would have had an easy victory.  Fortunately for Edge, Hardy didn't see it coming, and thus Edge carries quite a bit of momentum into the main event tonight!

"The Unstoppable Force" Bob Sapp & "Das Wunderkind" Alex Wright vs. Deranged & Delirious

Andrew Thomas counts: One, two, Delirious doesn't make it in time... three.
The arena is exploding in a chorus of boos.

The winners are Bob Sapp and Alex Wright. Time of match: 0:14:47

Bob Sapp and Alex Wright defeated Deranged and Delirious when A. Wright pinned
Deranged with the Reverse Neckbreaker in 0:14:47.
Rating: ** 3/4

Alex Wright and Bob Sapp dispose of Deranged and Delirious with relative ease.  Bob Sapp used his size to do most of the dirty work while Deranged and Delirious tried desperately to take him down.  Finally, he tagged out to Alex Wright, who finished the job with his brutal Reverse Neckbreaker.

(The Undertaker's music hits and the Prince of Darkness makes his way to the
ring.)

The Undertaker: I have come here tonight to respond to the challenge of
America's Most Wanted.  Harris and Storm believe that The Royal Court is weak,
and that they can shake us apart, but a match was not granted by NDW officials.
Well, Harris.  Storm.  If you truly believe that you can defeat us, then we
will see you later tonight in an Unsanctioned Match.  And when you fail... you
will Rest... In... Peace.

The winner is Ahmed Johnson. Time of match: 0:13:48

Ahmed Johnson pinned Danny Basham with the Pearl River Plunge in 0:13:48.
Rating: 1/2*

Danny Basham faced his former partner Ahmed Johnson here this week in hopes of gaining a measure of revenge, but his hopes were quickly dashed as the Pearl River Powerhouse lived up to both his name and that of his stable by Overpowering Danny Basham and pinning him with ease after the Pearl River Plunge.

The winner is Chuck Palumbo. Time of match: 0:17:15

Chuck Palumbo pinned Legend with the Jungle Kick in 0:17:15.
Rating: ** 1/2
[Nunzio interfered against Legend.]

Legend and Chuck Palumbo fight a long bout which very nearly reaches the time limit, but Palumbo's eventual victory can largely be attributed to the successful interference of his manager Nunzio.  With Nunzio's help, Palumbo was able to escape the Stone Cutter and later to set up the Jungle Kick which he used to get the win.

America's Most Wanted vs. The Dark Princes in a non-title Unsanctioned Match

The Undertaker lets go after 17 seconds.
The Undertaker hits an elbowsmash on James Storm.

[Unsanctioned Match]: Falls-Count-Anywhere Match:
The Dark Princes (The Undertaker and Prince Nana) defeated
America's Most Wanted (James Storm and Chris Harris) when Undertaker pinned
J. Storm with the Tombstone in 0:12:10.
Rating: **** 1/4

Accepting an Unsanctioned Match against two men the size of Prince Nana and The Undertaker might not have been very bright of America's Most Wanted.  And, perhaps unsurprisingly, The Royal Court managed to take down the tag team champions, with James Storm falling to a Tombstone.  However, clearly all is not good in the court, because instead of celebrating with The Undertaker, Prince Nana simply left the ring area in silence.

(Julio Dinero's music hits, and the Rumble in the Bronx winner makes his way
to the ring with A-Train and Ahmed Johnson in tow.)

Julio Dinero: There is a new power in New Deal Wrestling, as you can easily
see.  That power... is Overpower.  And with my brains as well as the strength
of my companions A-Train and Ahmed Johnson, we will make sure that the Global
Heavyweight Title comes into my hands on the night of The Big One.  And... to
ensure that everyone takes me seriously... I've arranged a little
demonstration.  Tonight, I will face Funaki, and once he has been ground into
the dirt beneath my heel, then all will know that disrespecting Dinero will
put them in exactly the same possition.  And whether I face Chance Beckett,
Edge, or even someone else, I will be victorious.  I guarantee that.

"The Amazing" Red vs. "Superfly" Jimmy Snuka

Red runs shoulder-first into the corner, but Jimmy Snuka lifts his knee.
Jimmy Snuka goes for an armdrag takedown, but Red counters it with
spinning headscissors.
Red takes Jimmy Snuka down with the Red Star Press.

Charles Robinson counts: One, two, three.
The crowd is giving Red a standing ovation.

The winner is Red. Time of match: 0:08:52

Red pinned Jimmy Snuka after the Red Star Press in 0:08:52.
Rating: **

If Jimmy Snuka was in his prime, this would have been a hell of a dream match as the top high flier of yesteryear took on the top high flier of today.  Sadly, Snuka isn't anywhere near the vicinity of his prime any longer, and despite his rhetoric that kids today didn't know how to fly, Red put him away easily enough with the Red Star Press.  Oops.

A-Train vs. Marcos

Marcos nails A-Train with a low blow.
Marcos runs into the ropes.
A-Train hits Marcos with a backdrop.
A-Train hits Marcos with a clothesline.
A-Train executes a kick to the midsection on Marcos.

A-Train is being booed like there is no tomorrow.

The winner is A-Train. Time of match: 0:15:59

A-Train pinned Marcos with the Train Wreck in 0:15:59.
Rating: * 1/2

A-Train destroys Marcos with relative ease here.  The only reason this match took as long as it did is because the referee fastcounted by accident and decided to let the match continue.  If the bruises on Marcos are any indication, the referee wasn't doing him any favors.

Ron "The Truth" Killings vs. "Mr. Showtime" Chance Beckett in a non-title match

They lock up.
Ron Killings goes for a kick to the thigh, but Chance Beckett counters it with
a dragon screw.

The winner is Chance Beckett. Time of match: 0:00:28

Chance Beckett pinned Ron Killings after a double arm DDT in 0:00:28.
Rating: *

In order to stay in top condition for his title match against Edge later tonight, Chance Beckett needed to get a fast win here.  And that's exactly what he did, rushing Killings and catching him off guard with a Double-Arm DDT for the pin in less than 30 seconds.

Julio Dinero vs. Funaki

The winner is Funaki. Time of match: 0:03:11

Funaki defeated Julio Dinero by disqualification in 0:03:11.
Rating: * 1/2
[A-Train interfered against Funaki.]

This "match" was exactly what Dinero promised: an example.  Dinero didn't even try to outwrestle Funaki, instead allowing Ahmed Johnson and A-Train to destroy the Japanese superstar before rolling out of the ring and delivering the exclamation point with an STO onto the concrete.  The very battered Funaki was only able to make his way to the back with the help of several trainers and his friend and tag team partner "The Amazing" Red.

Edge vs. "Mr. Showtime" Chance Beckett for the Global Heavyweight Title

Something is wrong with Edge.

Edge pinned Chance Beckett after a kneelift in 0:06:54.
Edge injured his right knee. He will be out for approximately 2 cards.
Rating: ** 1/2
(Edge won the Global Heavyweight Title.)

What a victory for Edge!  But that victory didn't come easy, as Edge quite clearly was having problems with his knee from the beginning of the match.  Still, despite this obvious injury, he was able to gut it out for long enough to take out an equally exhausted Chance Beckett.  In doing so, Edge has become the first Two-Time Global Heavyweight Champion in NDW history.

As we fade to black, a battered and exhausted Edge is helped to the back, limping all the way, but with the Global Heavyweight Title held high!

Card rating: **

Match observations:

Match of the Evening: The Dark Princes vs. America's Most Wanted

Well, that was eventful to say the least.  Not only did Edge win the Global Heavyweight Title, but he also qualified to face America's Most Wanted with Chris Sabin at some point in the future.  Unfortunately, Edge has suffered a sprained knee, and therefore he has decided that he must withdraw from his committment to compete for the tag team titles to ensure he doesn'tt further injure himself.

Therefore, there's quite a bit to look forawrd to next week.  First off, Ron Killings will face Chance Beckett for the third time after their match today was surprisingly short.  Management feels that these two can have an excellent match, and since the fans seem to approve, they'll face off one more time.

Also next week,  Bob Sapp will team up with Project Wunderkind to take on Deranged and Delirious once again.  Deranged claims he has a surprise partner in store, though, so this could be exciting.  Who will it be?  We'll find out!

After The Undertaker's impressive performance this week, Chris Harris has challenged him to a singles match next week.  This should be excellent, so don't miss it.

Finally, because Edge has dropped out of the Tag Team Title race, The Future will get another shot at qualifying.  This time, they will have to face Billy And Chuck, with the winners becoming the new top contenders to the Tag Team Titles.

It should be a good show, and with any luck there won't be any more injuries.  See you then.

I thought Red and Snuka would have pulled a higher rating then **

Keep up the good work!

-Richard
Critic of the DawnPosted on 06/23/04 at 07:36:40

They would have - if this was the Jimmy Snuka of the 1980s.  The Jimmy Snuka of 2004 has a workrate hovering around the 50 mark because he can't move like he used to.  Thus, I wouldn't expect many classics out of him.

Owen Hart RIPPosted on 06/23/04 at 19:00:06

I agree, just like RVD in the WWE. He's a watered down version of ECW RVD
xsouporheroxPosted on 06/23/04 at 19:06:54

And the rating is also affected by the fact that Red, much like RVD in fact, is a spot monkey. He's good at it, but that is what he is.
Critic of the DawnPosted on 06/23/04 at 19:07:37

Well, Snuka isn't so much watered down here as just so old that he can't really move or bump nearly as well as he used to.  NDW isn't a large enough promotion that it can afford to tell its workers to tone down their styles.

I picture Snuka as being about as athletic and as capable of fastpaced exciting matches as Chavo Classic.  That coupled with his attitude towards modern high flying is why I have him playing a heel in NDW.

Exactly.  Red is an amazing flier, but a master of ring psychology he is not.  And that's exactly the point that Snuka is making about today's high fliers - that 20 flippy moves in a row does not a good match make.

Red is actually presently my top ranked singles wrestler, but I've passed over him several times when deciding who to push to the upper midcard.  He's exciting to watch and he wins most of the time, but...  I've passed over him a number of times in favor of people who were bigger, more over, and better workers.  Most recently, I pushed Chris Harris to that level because frankly he's been doing an excellent all around job, and has had a number of ****+ tag team matches with his partner James Storm, who is actually one of my main eventers.

Eric "Critic of the Dawn"
91Posted on 06/24/04 at 02:25:32

On the basis of that card, if good matches is a priority for receiving a main event push, then Harris and Storm deserved theirs for sure. Maybe in the meantime you need a wacky gimmick for Red or something... :P
Critic of the DawnPosted on 06/24/04 at 09:32:45

A wacky gimmick for Red?  Nah.  Thus far I basically use him as my RVD equivalent - he pops the crowd and does crazy flippy stuff, then gets out of the way when it's time for the main event.  Although, I suppose you might consider the feud he and Funaki had with Overpower a while back as something of a wacky gimmick...

Good matches are a factor.  So is overness, size, ranking, and especially my personal whim at the time.  Generally I'll push one wrestler up the card and de-push another to keep things even at the end of each month.  Last month I gave Harris a push to Upper Midcard status and dropped Marcos back down to Midcard status (I had been trying to build him as a gutsy Spike Dudleyesque character, but unfortunately he wasn't performing as well as hoped).

Eric "Critic of the Dawn"
xsouporheroxPosted on 06/24/04 at 16:25:51

I'm just amazed at the good matches AMW puts on for you, especially against guys like 'Taker. When I was using them they'd have horrible matches against guys like Daniels and Maff and Corino and Acid.
Critic of the DawnPosted on 06/24/04 at 17:26:16

Lately their matches have improved dramatically due to the fact that I downloaded the updated exports for them (I believe you can get them at Josh Liller's site).  Those exports up their workrate to about 90 apiece, which seems more in line with most of what I've heard about them - they did have TNA's match of the year for 2003, after all.

That said, their ***** match against The Future (Xavier & Beckett) was before I updated them.  Back then, their workrate was in 75-80 range, so it came as a huge surprise, especially considering Xavier isn't much better and Beckett is only in the low 90s.  Some matches just seem to gel spectacularly, I suppose.

As for 'Taker... he's no slouch.  Nana is mediocre but carryable, but 'Taker has always come through and delivered a good match when I've needed a competent big man.  And why not?  He's got a fun gimmick, and plus can actually work well for a guy his size.  So having a good match against him isn't all that impressive - for example my first 2 heavyweight title matches were Matt Hardy vs. 'Taker, and both earned ****+.

The biggest slug in NDW at this point is Ahmed Johnson.  He's just awful, but he's big and powerful, so he should make an adequate enforcer for Overpower.

SuperstarJimiCPosted on 06/25/04 at 02:34:53

That was a great card, I agree RVD is a watered down version now than he was in ECW. Snuka is past his prime but that is a dream match between Snuka & Red.
Check out my current post on page 3, the voting is over on Tuesday, if you want to make suggestions or revote on the same wrestlers, then now is the time to do so. The voting is currently looking good, I personally submitted ten in there. Check it out & let me know what you think. It's entitled, "1 Promotion in the Works".
Thank You.

Thanks for the compliment, and I'm glad you're enjoying things.  I'd reccomend you take a look at Rick's BCW for an example of a similar style which also works very well.  Oh yeah, and it's a lot of fun to read as well.
