NDW Week 38 - Rumble in the Bronx

I don't think I've looked forward to a NDW card as much as the Rumble in the Bronx in quite some time.  Everything seemed to be lining up perfectly for the card.  Chris Sabin was finally granted the Title Shot he so richly deserves, James Storm recovered from his injury early enough to participate in the event, and things just generally seem to be going extremely well.  While the ending of the main event surprised me, I think I can run with it.

Quite a return for James Storm!  Storm and Harris team up for the first time in a month to take on the dangerous pairing of Slash and New Jack.  It looked like the challengers might have pulled out an upset when they hit the Hardcore Headdrop on Chris Harris, but he was able to kick out and make the hot tag to Storm, who cleaned house until Harris could recover and hit the Catatonic for the pinfall.  AMW retain their titles!

Matt Hardy wins!  Edge dominated the early match, just plain outwrestling Hardy, but Hardy came back quickly with the help of Lita and a pair of brass knuckles he had stashed at ringside.  In the end, Edge was beaten bloody and Hardy picked up the elementary pin after a simple elbowdrop.  This may have just the effect Hardy wanted - hurting Edge badly enough to keep him from taking advantage of his #30 Entrance.

Meanwhile, we see The Amazing Red, Bob Sapp, Jerry Lawler, Jamie Noble and former Global Heavyweight Champion Chris Hero speaking with management.  It looks as if these five have entered the Rumble in the Bronx!

This was, without a doubt, one of the finest matches we've seen this year.  Sabin and Beckett are both excellent competitors, but after all his talk it seems that Sabin just came up a little short against Chance Beckett tonight.  Sabin dominated most of the match with little trouble, but Beckett was able to pull out a hell of a comeback, hitting a Chance Encounter out of nowhere.  But somehow Sabin kicked out!  Beckett then relied on his old standby, the forearm choke, to choke the hell out of Sabin.  Another Chance Encounter, another kickout!  Just seconds later he hit the devestating move for a third time, finally putting Sabin out of the match.

Cameras backstage observe the wrestlers gathering and preparing for the Rumble in the Bronx.  But what's this?  Somebody has put The Amazing Red through a table!  And he's out cold!  How is he supposed to compete now?

Julio Dinero wins!?!  A noticably bloodied Edge was the last opponent standing in his way, and though it took nearly 10 minutes to do, Dinero wore down the already tired Edge and eliminated him to earn the victory in the Rumble in the Bronx.  This, of course, makes him the top contender for the Global Heavyweight Title at an event to be held sometime in the future.  Tune in next week for an announcement to that effect.

Other noteworthy occurances include Kevin Nash's extremely brief surprise return (he took Red's spot), Jimmy Snucka's long run at the beginning of the match, and James Storm's extremely strong return performance.  Storm eliminated thirteen foes, and for a while it looked like he was a lock to win the event until Edge defeated him.

As Julio Dinero celebrates his huge victory tonight, the cameras slowly fade to black.  Thanks for watching the Rumble in the Bronx!

Match of the Evening: Chris Sabin vs. Chance Beckett

The Rumble in the Bronx was as huge as could be expected, but who could have expected Julio Dinero to come out on top?  This victory is definately a huge shot in the arm for Dinero's career, and if he can maintain this momentum, the sky will be the limit for him.

Be sure to catch next week's show to see the fallout of this.  Besides the announcement regarding Dinero's eventual title shot, Edge will be facing Billy Gunn in a match to determine the top contender for Chance Beckett's Global Heavyweight Title.  As if that wasn't enough, Julio Dinero himself will be the guest referee!

After his great victory, Julio Dinero has requested a rematch for Overpower against Danny Basham and Ahmed Johnson.  This match has been signed, so it should be a fight worth seeing.

New NDW superstar Ron "The Truth" Killings will, of course, be in action next week.  He will face Global Heavyweight Champion Chance Beckett in a non-title match.

Finally, America's Most Wanted will once again face New Jack and Slash.  The challengers from this week were literally seconds from victory, so management has granted them a rematch to see whether they are as capable of winning the Titles as they seemed.

I'm looking forward to this as well.  And I am replying as I read the card for the first time to give you my initial thoughts on this one.  :)  This card sets up a big match in the NDW future if I remember the rules correctly.  ;)

AMW has been the anchor of the Tag Team Division since they joined NDW in week 3 or 4.  I was initially annoyed by James Storm's injury, but his comeback was just incredible.  Not only did he retain the tag team titles, he dominated the Rumble as well.  Talk about giving a guy a push on his return from injury!

By this point, Matt Hardy really needed a high profile win, and the Rumble in the Bronx definately gave him one.  While he didn't win the Rumble itself, he can and will most likely take responsibility for Edge's defeat at the hands of Dinero.

It was nice seeing Lawler in the rumble, yes.  Unfortunately for Lawler, James Storm apparently felt that 10 seconds of exposure was enough, and promptly dumped him back out of the Rumble after a DDT.

If Overpower vs. Danny Basham and Ahmed Johnson is the future of NDW's Tag Team Division, then it would seem that the future is full of hosses!  Come to think of it, though, the average size of NDW competitors has risen greatly since it began...

I was extremely happy with the Global Heavyweight Title match.  Beckett needed a great match to cement his status as a top-tier player, and Sabin definately helped him have one.  Good stuff.

I expected more from 'Taker as well.  With a showing that poor, I wouldn't expect the Royal Court to be able to hold together much longer.

Like I said, Storm got quite a comeback push, apparently.  He eliminated nearly half of the entrants in the rumble, including his own partner.  That was definately the coolest elimination, though.  Don't think I've seen that happen before.  Very cool.

Dinero's win was a shock all right.  As it got down to the final 4 (Chris Hero, Billy Gunn, Edge & Dinero), I was thinking to myself that any of them would be easy to run with... except for Dinero.  So I've obviously got to think a bit to ensure things turn out well.  I've got a pretty good idea, however...  Hopefully The Big One won't be main evented by Beckett/Dinero, though.  That'd be a bit underwhelming, I think.  Dinero vs. Edge, on the other hand, might be a lot of fun...  Dinero vs. Gunn could be decent as well, although not nearly as good as Dinero vs. Edge.

Glad you enjoyed the Rumble as much as I did running it.
