NDW Week 36 - Changing Lanes

Critic of the DawnPosted on 05/20/04 at 17:29:39

We're getting closer to the Rumble in the Bronx, and things are obviously heating up.  The Rumble itself is taking shape, and the NDW roster continues to rapidly expand.  This week marks the first attempt by Edge and Chris Harris to defend AMW's Tag Team Titles, as well as the continuation of quite a few feuds.  So... like... here it is.

Rating: *** 3/4

We start things off with a bang this week as Edge, Chris Sabin and Chris Harris take on Matt Hardy, Chance Beckett and Bob Sapp.  True to his nickname, Bob Sapp proved to be an unstoppable force in this match, weakening his opponents seriously and scoring an assist after stunning Sabin with a stiff power bomb.  Matt Hardy capitalized with his Mattitude Adjustment Flying Legdrop, then a second power bomb for the victory.

with the Big Wack Superkick in 0:18:27.
Rating: **

This proved to be a friendly competition between Billy Gunn and Chuck Palumbo.  Whenever the veteran Jimmy Snucka would attempt to involve himself, they would quickly show him the same respect he has shown NDW by allying against him.  In the end, Palumbo was victorious, and Billy Gunn got Whacked, but Palumbo quickly helped him up and the two shook hands as the crowd roared their approval.

Sean O'Haire defeated Deranged via pinfall in 0:13:34.
Rating: ***

Sean O'Haire successfully uses his massive size advantage over Deranged to pick up a victory, but it wasn't easy.  In the end, a Widowmaker on the concrete floor was required to knock the fight out of Deranged.  Once this was done, however, a simple kick knocked the noticably dazed cruiser down and allowed O'Haire to pick up the pinfall victory.

(Chance Beckett's music hits, and he makes his way to the ring.)

Chance Beckett: Well well well.  The Future is golden once again, and Mr.
Showtime is your new Global Heavyweight Champion.  And you thought Xavier and
I weren't for real.  I suppose I can't blame you.  We took six whole months to
position ourselves to sweep through the card, but once things were in place...
victory was just a matter of time.  We've been pretty damn successful, I think.
Xavier forced Chris Hero out of NDW to deal with "family problems."  He and I
beat America's Most Wanted time after time after time!  And now, I've taken
the Global Heavyweight Title from your hero, Edge.  What can I say?  It was
Showtime.  Edge took a chance facing me... but it ended up being a Chance that
took his title!

(The crowd boos thunderously)

Chance Beckett: But I'm not here to gloat.  I'm here to address a certain
individual who just got his ass kicked.  Deranged?  Who's laughing now?  Why,
I think it's me.  Hahaha!  Yep.  Definately me.  Now, you may be hoping you
can swing a title shot because you've been antagonizing me, Deranged.  Sorry,
but no dice.  If you don't give me respect, you don't get it in return.  No
shot for you!

[MsChif interfered against Legend.]

Once again NDW has brought in two of the top independent wrestlers for a non-sanctioned match, and once again the results have been very good.  Delirious and Legend are both excellent workers who should both do very well in NDW.

Following the match, Legend grabbed a microphone and announced that he was so impressed with NDW that he was going to have to throw his hat into the Rumble in the Bronx!

with the Franchiser in 0:13:40.
Rating: *** 1/4

And...  what the hell...  It's Shane Douglas and Johnny Ace!  I think that we might just have a Dynamic Dudes reunion right here!  And they've come out on top of The Dark Princes, which is no easy feat!  But why are these two back together?  And will we see the return of the skateboards?  Only time will tell!

"The Amazing" Red & Funaki vs. Project Wunderkind

A-Train hits Funaki in the back with a chair.
Mike Chioda calls for the DQ.

Rating: **
[A-Train interfered against Funaki.]

Well, that didn't last long.  Poor Funaki is down once again after a stiff chairshot from A-Train.  Project Wunderkind bails from the ring as they lay out Red with a second chairshot and Julio Dinero grabs a microphone.

(The crowd boos loudly.)

Julio Dinero: Funaki, Red...  Consider this our acceptance of your challenge.
I look forward to seeing you bald, Funaki!

A-Train: And I look forward to hearing Red announced as "The Amazing Plaid!"

Julio Dinero: But... they haven't accepted those stipulations yet.  And they're
sort of unconsious at the moment, Train.  So why bother?  We're going to win
either way.

A-Train: Because there's more bad stuff for us if we lose than them!  It's not
fair, and I'm not going to risk my precious man-fur unless it is!  So there!

(Julio throws down the microphone and stalks to the back with a sigh.)

Ahmed Johnson pinned Julio Dinero with the Pearl River Plunge in 0:12:36.
Rating: * 1/4

The Pearl River Powerhouse shows how he got his name by overpowering Overpower member Julio Dinero throughout the match and eventually putting him away with a sick Pearl River Plunge.  After weeks of back and forth fighting between these two teams, neither one seems to be able to get an advantage!

Xavier vs. Insane Dragon

[Doug Basham interfered against Xavier.]

Xavier mercifully ends this match by putting Insane Dragon away with the Kiss Your X Goodbye.  As he departs, Insane Dragon staggers to the announce table and swipes a microphone, shouting that he, too, would enter the Rumble in the Bronx because he had a knack for battle royals.

(Edge is backstage preparing to defend the Tag Team Titles when Matt Hardy
barges into his lockerroom.)

Matt Hardy: Ah, Edge!  Just the man I wanted to see!

Edge: What do you want, Hardy?  Can't you see I have another match?

Matt Hardy: I have a little proposition for you, Edge.  I've talked to
management and already had this approved...  You just need to agree.  If you've
got the Mattitude for it, that is.

Edge: The Mattitude for what, exactly?  I'm not agreeing to anything unless you
tell me what you're talking about, Hardy.

Matt Hardy: Picture this.  Me against you again next week.  The winner enters
the Rumble in the Bronx as #30.  And the loser is the first man out.  How about
it, Edge?

Edge: You're on.  I'll kick your ass again, Hardy, and then I'll get *MY* title
back!

Chris Harris and Edge defeated Slash and New Jack when C. Harris pinned New Jack
after flying headscissors in 0:12:36.
Rating: ****
(Chris Harris and Edge retained the Global Tag Team Titles.)

Edge and Chris Harris somehow pull off a quick victory over Slash and New Jack to retain AMW's Tag Team Gold despite an earlier loss on the card.  The end came out of nowhere, but nevertheless we are left with the image of Chris Harris holding up both tag team titles and dedicating the victory to his injured teammate James Storm.

Card rating: ** 1/2

Match observations:

Match of the Evening: Slash & New Jack vs. Edge & Chris Harris

So the first challenge to AMW's Titles is gone.  According to the doctors, there will likely be another before James Storm is capable of returning to the ring, so we can't celebrate just yet.

Next week is, of course, our last stop on the road to the Rumble in the Bronx.  Expect the unexpected as more entrants are announced and more matches for the card are made.

To start things off, Slash and New Jack will team up to face Billy and Chuck.  Both of these teams have entered the Rumble in the Bronx, so perhaps this will give us something of a preview of what's to come.

The Undertaker was seriously angered by Prince Nana's loss last week, so he has challenged The Dynamic Dudes to a rematch.  Will Ace and Douglas come out on top?  Or will The Dark Princes add them to their long list of fallen foes?

The feud between Overpower and Danny Basham & Ahmed Johnson continues.  Next week A-Train will face Ahmed Johnson in a match which will redefine the word "trainwreck", and Danny Basham will take on Julio Dinero.

Debuting superstar Legend will team up with Jimmy Snucka to take on the pairing of Delirious and Deranged in what should be a suitably insane tag team match.

Finally, as announced, Edge will take on Matt Hardy to determine the #30 spot in the Rumble in the Bronx.  The winner will enter last, while the loser will enter first.  This will have a major effect on the outcome, so tune in to see!
