NDW Week 35 - Walking the Path

Critic of the DawnPosted on 05/16/04 at 18:56:59

First of all, my apologies for not being around a lot lately. I've been very busy what with moving back up to Philly and graduating from college. So obviously I haven't had much time to work on NDW lately. I do have a card to post today, however, so I hope you enjoy it. It's a pretty eventful one.

Rating: ** 3/4

Xavier starts things off tonight with a solid back and forth brawl against Chris Harris, who came to the ring with his half of the Tag Team Titles. A quick Kiss Your X Goodbye followed by a Northern Lights Suplex got the victory for Xavier. Following the match, Xavier told Harris how much he was looking forward to him being stripped of the titles. Almost as much as he was looking forward to winning the Rumble in the Bronx! Harris got to his feet and told Xavier that not only would he be holding on to the Titles, he'd see him in the Rumble!

Doug Basham and Insane Dragon come out on top of The Dark Princes here! This can't be a good sign for The Royal Court!

...

Wait, what's this? The Undertaker has a microphone! He's announcing that the reconstruction of the Royal Court in his own image must begin with a great victory, and thus he will enter - and win - the Rumble in the Bronx!

Jungle Kick in 0:08:17.
Rating: ** 1/4
[Nunzio interfered against Chance Beckett.]

Billy and Chuck upset The Future, who were booked into this match by Xavier despite each having another match this evening. Xavier apparently feels like he has something to prove, but thus far it has gotten him nothing but grief. And Chance Beckett can't be pleased that he has to face Edge after already competing in a grueling tag team match.

Of course, this didn't stop Beckett from immediately announcing that he would also be entering the Rumble in the Bronx. Billy and Chuck proceeded to grab the microphones and claim that they would do the same. Quite a lineup is developing for this event!

(We move backstage, where The Amazing Red and Funaki are sitting.)

Red: A-Train, Julio Dinero, last week you challenged us to put our money where
our mouth is and make this a hair vs. man-fur match. If you win, Funaki will
shave his head bald. If we win, A-Train has to shave his back. It sounds
like a fair challenge to me.

Funaki: Wait! Wait! Nono! When we win, Julio Dinero must change his name
to Julio Yen!

Red: Funaki... if you keep adding stipulations we'll never actually have a
match.

Funaki: Good! A-Train smells very very bad. I do not want to fight him!

Red: But...

Funaki: But if Julio Dinero changes his name, then we will fight!

(Red sighs)

Triangle Match:
Deranged defeated Bob Sapp and Slash when Deranged pinned B. Sapp after
a moonsault bodyblock in 0:00:51.
Rating: *

Whoa! Where the heck did that come from!?! Deranged picks up a quick win over Bob Sapp before the match had even started with a quick moonsault bodyblock! Bob Sapp is up right after the three count, and he looks mildly miffed, if the powerbomb he just delivered to Deranged is any indication.

Meanwhile, Slash grabs a microphone and announces that he will be entering the Rumble in the Bronx. Bob Sapp appears to be too engrossed with rearranging Deranged's spine to consider it at the moment.

Important announcement:

After lengthy deliberation, the NDW board of directors has decided to allow
America's Most Wanted to retain the Tag Team Titles for the time being. They
will be required to defend their titles at the designated times, however, and
to that end, Global Heavyweight Champion Edge has been chosen as a temporary
replacement for James Storm until Storm's knee is healthy enough to resume
competition.

when A. Johnson pinned Dinero after a bodyslam in 0:17:43.
Rating: 3/4*

Surprisingly clean match which saw Ahmed Johnson go over Julio Dinero as A-Train and Danny Basham brawled on the outside. These two teams are clearly coming to hate each other a great deal, and the violence of their encounters only seems to be escalating! Who can say what will happen next?

Rating: *** 3/4

The grizzled veteran "Superfly" Jimmy Snucka goes over Chris "HAIL" Sabin with authority! Although Sabin kicked out of Snucka's famed Superfly Splash, a crucifix roll up from behind didn't leave him nearly as lucky. As Snucka cackled and headed to the back, Sabin grabbed a microphone, calling out that he would be seeing Snucka again... in the Rumble in the Bronx!

[Julio Dinero interfered against Funaki.]

Red and Funaki take out Project Wunderkind with authority here despite interference from A-Train and Julio Dinero. What this duo lacks in size, they more than make up for in skill, wit, and determination. Frustrated by his defeat, Alex Wright grabbed a microphone and demanded entrance into the Rumble in the Bronx, claiming that after putting on one of the best matches of the year for that belt, he deserved to be able to enter!

(Edge's music hits, and he can be seen walking through the backstage area
towards the stage. The Global Heavyweight Title is perched upon his shoulder.
As he turns a corner, who should he see but Matt Hardy, simply sitting and
watching him.)

Matt Hardy: I see you have my title, Edge. The one I still haven't gotten a
rematch for, Edge. Well... I just thought I'd tell you to be careful. I
want you in the best possible health for when I defeat you in the Rumble in
the Bronx, and then again for when I use my top-contender status to take back
what's mine.

(Edge simply glares and moves on.)

(Chance Beckett won the Global Heavyweight Title.)

Here is your winner... and NEW GLOBAL HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION... "Mr. Showtime" Chance Beckett!

Beckett upsets Edge despite having to wrestle twice in one evening. It looked for much of the match that victory was only seconds away for Edge, but Beckett managed to steal the victory by scoring a quick takedown on Edge. After locking in a camel clutch, Beckett quickly switched to his illegal but extremely effective forearm choke, choking out Edge enough to hit the Chance Encounter and pin him before he could recover. What a shame. The crowd is practically rioting at this unexpected loss for their champion, but we are out of time!

Match observations:

Match of the Evening: Chance Beckett vs. Edge

We once again have a new champion, and once again The Future is golden, thanks to the skill (and duplicity) of one Chance Beckett.

Next week, Edge, Chris Harris & Chris Sabin will team up to face Chance Beckett, Matt Hardy & Bob Sapp in what looks likely to be a truly epic battle.

Additionally, due to the great success achieved in the last time one was promoted, NDW will be holding another non-sanctioned match between two competitors who have not yet been announced. This will be a surprise, so you'll have to tune in to see what happens.

Also next week, The Dark Princes will be teaming up against a debuting team in NDW. Who will it be, and who will come out on top? Our lips are sealed!

A-Train will again be facing Danny Basham next week, and once again Julio Dinero will battle Ahmed Johnson. These 4 wrestlers have been beating the snot out of each other for weeks now, and it seems that they are no closer to resolution than before. Who will come out on top? It's hard to call!

Finally, Chris Harris and Edge will defend AMW's tag team titles against Slash and New Jack. Harris and Edge have already been signed to another match next week, so things could get tough for this makeshift duo. Will AMW retain their titles? Or will Slash and New Jack steal them away? Only one way to find out!

All this, plus more announcements about the Rumble in the Bronx! Don't miss it, or you'll be very very sorry.

This should be an interesting one... (And yes I've read the other 2 that I did not reply to since I was away for about a week)

Xavier wins... Harris lost his partner, keeps the tag titles for now... and now loses to Xavier.

The Royal Court is falling apart at the seams!

ChuckABilly wins!  woo!

LOL  Funaki... but he smells very very bad!  :)

Sapp should be mad... that was a quick pin.

Edge replacing Storm in AMW for the time being... interesting!

Matt Hardy making his comeback!

Superfly wins!  The Legend is here!

Julio Peso interferes on Funaki...  This Ultimate Jeopardy match is starting to take shape.  ;)

Chance Beckett is the NEW Global Champ?!? WOW!  Guess Hardy's threat pre-match was unnecessary.
Critic of the DawnPosted on 05/17/04 at 07:13:12

It seems like The Future has taken the place of The Royal Court as NDW's top heel groupsince the loss of Lawler.  Xavier has been especially dominant, perhaps in part because I've had him ranked as a main eventer by push since the start of this circuit (I have 4 main eventers at a time, presently they're Edge, James Storm, Matt Hardy & Xavier).  Harris is merely the recipient of a midcard push, so despite Xavier's losses of late, this victory isn't surprising.

It's looking very much like the Rumble in the Bronx will be a make-or-break situation for The Royal Court.  If Undertaker wins or at least does very well, he can probably impress A-Train and a few others enough that they'll want to join.  If not, Prince Nana might just say the hell with it and look for another heel in need of a lackey.

I know you've been wanting to see Billy and Chuck in tag team action, but in recent weeks it's been sort of hard.  Given Xavier's predilection for booking himself and Chance Beckett in multiple matches each evening, their victory isn't entirely surprising.

I'm really digging the feud between Red & Funaki & Overpower.  The rules want Overpower to feud with Danny Basham and Ahmed Johnson, so I'm making things interesting by adding increasingly absurd stipulations to any eventual match so that it'll be a huge event when it finally happens.  I do believe I'm looking forward to this match almost as much as I was the cage match between Edge & Hardy.

Despite being ranked in the midcard, Bob Sapp seems to be appropriately dominant in NDW.  Deranged's victory was a fluke and he knows it, thus he started to practice his amateur chiropractic skills on the little guy.

I was really torn over whether I should strip AMW of the titles.  In the end, I decided that since it was only 5 weeks, and since Edge seemed to be doing well on the top of the card, it'd be interesting to keep everything tied nicely together by sticking him in the tag team picture.

Matt Hardy's victory over Marcos wasn't especially remarkable, but it's pretty clear that he's still hungry for the gold despite the fact that he doesn't seem to be getting many shots at it.  Thus his anticipation for the Rumble in the Bronx.

I'm astounded that Snucka's match was as good as it was, considering I'm using the stats for old tired Superfly rather than his young and vigorous self.  I'm kind of liking the role of grizzled veteran who has no respect for those damn kids and their flippy spot-fu corruption of the style he helped to popularize on him.  And I strongly suspect that was the worst run-on sentence I've written in recent months. ;D

I was surprised by Beckett's win also.  TNM likes him, and he's upper midcard, but he had already wrestled a match.  Still, The Future getting back gold this soon works nicely for storyline purposes.  As for Hardy's pre-match interview... he's as shocked as the rest of us that Edge lost.  I expect he's going to have something to say to Edge about it.
