NDW Week 32 - Caged Fury

Critic of the DawnPosted on 05/06/04 at 17:02:50

Because the internet was down yesterday and I couldn't work on my final paper in college, I had time to run Caged Fury.  I know some people have been eagerly awaiting the results, so I thought I'd post them here now.

Xavier and A-Train defeated Doug Basham and Insane Dragon when Xavier pinned
I. Dragon after a flying kneedrop in 0:18:13.
Rating: ** 1/2

Agreeing to wrestle two matches on a night in which the Tag Team Titles would not only be defended, but would be defended in a Steel Cage Match might not have been the brightest move ever by Global Heavyweight Champion Xavier, but his victory with A-Train over the formidable pairing of Doug Basham and Insane Dragon shows that he is always a major threat.  If AMW takes him lightly, they may well meet the same fate.

(The ring clears, then Julio Dinero makes his way down to join his powerful
partner.)

Julio Dinero: We're told that NDW officials have hand picked a team to take
us to our limits.  Well, we're here to tell them to bring it on!  We're ready
for anything and anyone!

A-Train: That's right.  Julio here is a damn good fighter... and me... I'm the
biggest man in NDW today.  Together, we're damn near unstoppable.

Julio Dinero: But there is something that's been bothering me.  We've been
getting no respect from anyone here.  And there are two men in particular who
come to mind...

A-Train: Red, and Funaki.  A couple of arrogant-

Julio Dinero: Arrogant bastards, they are!  No respect for their betters!

A-Train: And I do *not* smell!  Just because I've got a thick and lusterous
coat of man-fur doesn't mean I'm some kind of smelly animal.  You hear that,
Funaki!  I AM NOT AN ANIMAL, I'M A LOCOMOTIVE!

(Julio Dinero blinks as A-Train misquotes the Elephant Man, then a funky beat
hits, and...)

A-Train & Julio Dinero vs. A mystery team

Wait...  I recognise that guy... it's Danny Basham.  And who's that with him?  Ahmed Johnson!?!

Match with Special Referee New Jack:
Danny Basham and Ahmed Johnson defeated A-Train and Julio Dinero when
Danny Basham made A-Train submit to a side headlock in 0:08:26.
Rating: 3/4*

It's Doug Basham's brother Danny!  And he's brought The Pearl River Powerhouse along with him!

This was a stiff and brutal brawl which saw A-Train being dominated by Johnson and Basham like he hasn't been before here in NDW!  Eventually, Danny Basham took A-Train down with the Brain Damage, then locked him in a side headlock until he tapped out.  A-Train and Dinero were, of course, incensed, and claimed loudly that they would have won easily if A-Train hadn't already wrestled a long and grueling match.

Sean O'Haire pinned Marcos after a splash in 0:14:50.
Rating: ** 3/4

Sean O'Haire goes over Marcos here in an absolutely brutal match.  O'Haire hit Marcos with everything but the kitchen sink, and Marcos still refused to stay down.  Finally, O'Hiare was forced to take advantage of his superior size and weight, splashing Marcos and using every ounce of leverage he could muster to keep his shoulders on the mat.

(Matt Hardy is in the lockerroom with Lita, who is helping him tape up his
wrists and hands for the upcoming battle with Edge.)

Lita: Are you sure you know what you're doing, Matt?  Edge knows his way around
a steel cage...

Matt Hardy: And so do I, Lita!  I am ready for him!  I have my hands taped up
to keep me from getting cut up as I climb out of the match, I've got you in my
corner.  And finally, I have something Edge could never possibly understand
on my side.

Lita: You mean...?

Matt Hardy: That's right.  My Mattitude!  And remember... the proper Mattitude
trumps any amount of Edgecation!

Lita: Heh heh.  That's pretty clever, Matt.

Matt Hardy: I know.  Now come here.  I could use a neck rub to get me loosened
up for the match.

Lita: No problem...

Rating: ** 1/4
[New Jack interfered against Billy Gunn.]

New Jack interferes before this bout can really get going, laying out Billy Gunn on the outside of the ring with his devestating Diving Headbutt.  Following the victory, Slash rolls out of the ring and joins his partner in beating down Gunn, but Palumbo runs out of the crowd to make the save!  New Jack and Slash withdraw, but they definately came out on top in this exchange.

[Insane Dragon interfered against Alex Wright.]

Before this match could really get going, it had degenerated into a full out brawl between A-Train & Julio Dinero with Jay Briscoe and Alex Wright (who were announced as Project Wunderkind) against Red, Funaki, Doug Basham and Insane Dragon.  It seemed that it would be just a matter of time before the heels came out on top, then Danny Basham and Ahmed Johnson ran down to the ring and cleared the ringside area to a loud pop from the fans!

Chris "HAIL" Sabin vs. A mystery opponent

Wait... could it be?  Chris Sabin has to face BOB SAPP!  Poor Sabin!

Rating: ***

Chris Sabin makes his way to the ring prepared to take on anyone to prove that he's worthy of a shot at the Global Heavyweight Title, when who should appear but BOB SAPP!  Sapp has been ruling Japanese wrestling for some time now, but now he has come to NDW, and if his summary trouncing of Chris Sabin is any indication, he's going to make one hell of an impact!

Rating: ****
[Prince Nana interfered against Chuck Palumbo.]
[Nunzio interfered against The Undertaker.]

A hell of a match, literally, which saw the remnants of The Royal Court working together like a well oiled machine to crush Chuck Palumbo.  Palumbo, to his credit and that of his manager, was able to make it back into the ring after an Elevated DDT, to avoid the resulting pinfall attempt, to get a foot under the ropes after a Tombstone, and more before a powerslam finally put him out for the count.

(Chance Beckett is getting warmed up for the main event when a battered looking
Xavier walks in.)

Chance Beckett: Are you okay, Xav?  It looks like Doug Basham and Insane Dragon
practically kicked your face in!

Xavier: I'm fine.  Just a little banged up.  I've had far worse, Chance.  This
won't stop me from making sure we retain our titles.  We're the Future, Chance.
America's Most Wanted are the past.  As NDW's first Double Champion, I feel
confident that I'm on top of my game.  And I know you always step up to the
plate when the chips are down.

Chance Beckett: It's why they call me Mr. Showtime.

Xavier: Damn right.  Now, get me some ice, and by the time our match is up
I'll be ready to go.

Rating: ** 3/4

The crowd was hot as hell for this match, and Hardy and Edge brawled all around the cage.  Hardy had the advantage through the majority of the match, even scoring two Twists of Fate and nearly escaping the cage.  Edge turned things around, however, stopping Hardy just before he could climb out of the cage, pulling him back in, and spearing him down before escaping through the cage's door to a loud pop from the crowd.

James Storm after a double arm DDT in 0:01:57.
Rating: ***
(The Future retained the Global Tag Team Titles.)

Ouch.  Poor James Storm.  The main event had hardly gotten started when Chance Beckett went DDT crazy on him, knocking him out cold in less than two minutes and getting the surprise pinfall before Chris Harris could react.

With this match complete, The Future has faced down their most dangerous challenge yet.  Despite this defeat, AMW seem determined to overcome Xavier and his partner somehow.

Once again, we close as Xavier and Chance Beckett stand over their fallen challengers holding the gold high!  Who can stop The Future?  Who can take down Xavier?

Match observations:

Match of the Evening: The Undertaker vs. Chuck Palumbo

Caged Fury may be over, but the fallout has just begun!  How will the NDW roster react to The Future's successful title defense?  Will Xavier be defeated?  Tune in to find out!

Danny Basham and Ahmed Johnson made an immediate impact after their debut match tonight, defeating the impressing pairing of A-Train and Julio Dinero.  Dinero and A-Train claim that the loss only happened because A-Train had already wrestled, so a rematch has been booked for next week between these two teams.

Also next week, Bob Sapp will face NDW's own "The Amazing" Red in a singles match.  Calling this a size mismatch is clearly an understatement.  Can Red use his speed and skills to overcome the sheer power of Bob Sapp?  Or will "The Unstoppable Force" roll over him as quickly as he did Chris Sabin?

After tonight's unsatisfying defeat at the hands of The Future, Harris and Storm have challenged The Future to a pair of singles matches.  Xavier has accepted with his customary smugness, so next week we will see James Storm vs. Chance Beckett and Chris Harris vs. Xavier!

After his excellent match against Chuck Palumbo, The Undertaker has challenged Palumbo's partner Billy Gunn to a singles match.  If it's half as good as his match tonight against Palumbo, we should be in for a treat.

Finally, Xavier will defend his Global Heavyweight Title.  NDW officials are so impressed by Edge's victory over Hardy this week that they have granted him Top Contender's status.  So tune in next week for Edge vs. Xavier with the Global Heavyweight Title on the line!

Tune in for all of this, plus a major announcement about the future of NDW next week!

New Jack attacked Mr Gunn?  That's not nice!   And cost him the match too...

Ahmed Johnson coming in, spells injury streak to several of NDW's talents.

Bob SAPP! in NDW!  good fit to the company.

Taker wins... but is the Royal Court still a functioning unit ??  ;)

Edge wins!  And Hardy's brooding shall continue!  This has to put Edge in line for a title match.

Quick work in the main event.  DDT crazy indeed.

MAJOR announcement?  Hmm... I wonder just what or whom is COMING to NDW?  ;)

Critic of the DawnPosted on 05/06/04 at 21:56:39

New Jack was all over the place tonight.  I guess he was bored because he wasn't booked to wrestle.  Note to self: bored New Jack = People getting randomly whomped just for kicks.

I wasn't overly thrilled to get Ahmed Johnsen on my list of people to bring in either, but just think of how entertaining the incoherant promos will be!  Ah, if only I had Nailz in NDW so I could team them up.  Now *that* would be a duo for the ages!  I certainly hope Johnson is careful.  So far Jerry Lawler's the only guy to have picked up and injury, and while it was a life threatening case of Tennis Elbow, he managed to recover quickly regardless.

Somehow I knew it'd be Sapp.  I was thinking about it prior to the match starting, and when it did, I wsan't surprised.  Poor Sabin, though.  Sapp practically murdered him.  If "The Unstoppable Force" carries on like that, I can definately see him in the uppercard sooner rather than later (yeah, I start all my new guys in the midcard.  EVEN if they're Bob F'n Sapp.)

The Court seemed to function well enough tonight.   And since The Future still hold the tag titles, I expect 'Taker is going to look to begin adding to it once again.

I was pleased by the results of this match, and since Xavier is wrestling twice again next week, I see Edge most likely picking up the title there.    And when he does, Hardy's going to be one of the first guys that wants a shot at him.  I was a bit dissappointed by the quality of the match here, though.  All of that buildup, and it ended up being less than 3 stars.  Blah.

The main event was also a tad dissappointing.  Like I said, Beckett went DDT crazy.  If you could copy the stufff caught by the rewind function, you'd have seen him hit something like 3 DDT variants in a row before changing things up and finally putting Storm away with a Double-Arm DDT a minute later.  Poor James Storm.

As for the major announcement...  I'll never tell!  Well, not until the major announcement is announced, anyway.

That has got to be the Line of the Month ...

As for the major announcement...  I'll never tell!  Well, not until the major announcement is announced, anyway.
I love it.  So Heenan like and yet so non-informative.  :)
