NDW Week 29 - Wipeout

Critic of the DawnPosted on 05/02/04 at 19:41:01

At Stepping Up, I got a chance to begin some new storylines to try to keep things going after the loss of some of my most valuable workers.  Already, only 1 card down the line, I feel like things are looking up once again as I've got some major feuds brewing.  This card is more or less just buildup for those feuds, but everything came together to make it quite effective nonetheless.  Enjoy.

Number-One-Contenders-Match:
America's Most Wanted (James Storm and Chris Harris) defeated
A-Train and Julio Dinero when James Storm defeated Dinero by countout in
          0:10:59.
Rating: * 3/4

AMW defeats their foes like the wily veterans they are, simply outwrestling and outthinking the dominant new team of A-Train and Julio Dinero.  This positions Chris Harris as both one half of the top contenders for the tag team titles, and the top contender for Xavier's Global Heavyweight Title tonight!  What a way to start a show!

(As Chris Harris makes his way backstage, he runs into Chris Sabin.)

Chris Sabin: Hey, Harris... before you hit the showers, I just wanted to say
to you... good luck tonight.  Xavier's a tricky bastard, and he hits harder
than pretty much anyone else in NDW.  But he can be beaten.  You need to get
inside his head, Harris.  He's convinced that he's the future of this business.
If you can show that you've got at least as much potential as he has, it might
mess with his head and throw him off of his game.

Chris Harris: Hey, thanks Sabin... but why do you care?  Aren't you more likely
to be granted a shot against Xavier than against me?

Chris Sabin: Not if you agree to give me a title shot if... no, when you win!

Chris Harris: I'll think about it...  In all honesty, I don't know if I should
trust you, Sabin.

Chris Sabin: Hey, I made an honest mistake.  I got angry that Edge booted Sydal
out of NDW, so I joined The Royal Court to teach him a lesson.  When I realized
that they were bad news, I turned away from them and saved Edge's ass to try to
make it up to him.  I can't make you trust me, Harris, but try to put yourself
in my position...

Alex Wright pinned Edge after a Frankensteiner in 0:11:20.
Rating: *** 3/4

Upset!  Alex Wright outlasts Edge and goes over him clean with a Frankensteiner!  Edge looks slightly dazed, then shakes his head to clear it, heading to the back.  The cameras follow him and watch as he grabs his bag, gets in his car, and speeds off into the night.

The winner is Deranged. Time of match: 0:09:19

Deranged defeated The Undertaker by disqualification in 0:09:19.
Rating: ***

Deranged fared surprisingly well against The Undertaker despite being caught and eating a Tombstone early in the match.  He would eventually gain the victory by DQ when The Undertaker was caught trying to pull Deranged's tights for leverage.  Why 'Taker felt this was necessary is difficult to say.  What isn't difficult to say is that this is quickly becoming quite the night of upsets...  Could we see another one in the Main Event?

Funaki pinned Julio Dinero with the Rising Sun in 0:03:22.
Rating: * 3/4

Watching this match, it was quite obvious that Funaki was fresh while Julio Dinero was still winded from his earlier match against AMW.  Still, Funaki gaining a defeat over Dinero can be seen as another upset of sorts...  Very interesting.

Matt Hardy vs. "The Amazing" Red

Another huge upset, this one with "The Amazing" Red going over former Global Heavyweight Champion Matt Hardy cleanly via the InfraRed!  The planets must be aligned tonight, for it seems as if every underdog in NDW is finally getting his day!

Chris "HAIL" Sabin vs. Prince Nana

The winner is Chris Sabin. Time of match: 0:12:56

Chris Sabin pinned Prince Nana with the Future Shock in 0:12:56.
Rating: *** 1/4

One Future Shock, and it was lights out for Prince Nana.  This was a very even and competitive match throughout, dominated by Nana's attempts to slow down and overpower Sabin and Sabin's reliance on his agility and high flying.  It seemed to pay off quite well, as Nana was finally too worn out to escape when Sabin went for the devestating Future Shock.

(The Undertaker arrives at ringside.)

The Undertaker: Now that you are finished your match, we must discuss who is
the new leader of The Royal Court.

Prince Nana: Could we talk about this later?  My head is killing me!

(The Undertaker fixes Nana with a grim stare that suggests it might not just
be his head killing him in the near future.  Nana gulps.)

Prince Nana: Okay...  Very well.  What do you propose?

The Undertaker: The King is dead, Nana.  And the one to replace him must be
strong-willed, charismatic, and ruthlessly efficient.

Prince Nana: I agree with you.  I think I'm the perfect man for the job.

The Undertaker: Ah, but Nana... why settle for a Prince when you could have the
Prince of Darkness?

Prince Nana: That's not the same and you know it!  I'm a real prince,
Undertaker!  Not a man who has watched one too many B Horror movies!

(The Undertaker glares and advances slowly on Nana.)

The Undertaker: I generally don't play these games... but tell me, Nana, what
is the first rule of horror movies?

Prince Nana: In American horror films, I've noticed that the token African tends
to die fir... oh.  Er...  I see your point.  Er... Undertaker, Sir...

The Undertaker: A wise decision, Nana.  I would much prefer my enemies to
Rest... In... Peace... than my allies.

Sean O'Haire & Insane Dragon vs. Slash and a mystery partner

The verdict: A DOUBLE COUNTOUT !

Sean O'Haire and Insane Dragon and Slash and New Jack battled to a
double countout in 0:06:11.
Rating: * 1/4
[Nidia interfered against New Jack.]
(Doug Basham no-showed.)

Sean O'Haire took over for Doug Basham tonight due to unfortunate car trouble on Basham's part.  The match was a non-event, however, as Slash's new partner turned out to be New Jack, who seemed more interested in brawling on the outside than wrestling an actual match.  As he and O'Haire brawled to the back, both were counted out and the match was declared a draw.

countout in 0:14:36.
Rating: ** 3/4
[Nunzio interfered against Chance Beckett.]
[Matt Hardy interfered against Billy Gunn.]

The Future went over Billy and Chuck strong here with an assist from an irate looking Matt Hardy.  Already stressed at his loss to Red, Hardy screamed at Gunn on the outside to tell him where Edge was hiding.  When Gunn didn't answer, a Twist of Fate laid him out and gave The Future an easy countout win as Hardy headed backstage once more.

Marcos vs. A-Train

Marcos executes the Tilt-a-Whirl Inverted DDT on A-Train.
The crowd is giving Marcos a standing ovation.
Marcos goes for the pin.

The winner is Marcos. Time of match: 0:05:25

Marcos pinned A-Train with the Tilt-a-Whirl Inverted DDT in 0:05:25.
Rating: * 3/4

Another upset!  Marcos goes over the collosal A-Train.  While Marcos did have the advantage of being fresh, that doesn't change the fact that he was able to defeat someone well over twice his size.  Very impressive showing.

(Backstage, we can see Matt Hardy continuing to rant.)

Matt Hardy: Dammit!  Where the hell is he!  He thinks he can just take me out?
Well I'm not Jerry Lawler!  I won't play games and push around pawns!  I will
find him, and I will use all my Mattributes to kick his ass back to Toronto!

(Matt comes across a referee)

Matt Hardy: Hey, you!  Where the hell is Edge?

Rudy Charles: Edge?  He left almost two hours ago!

Matt Hardy: God dammit!

(Matt knocks over a table, smashes a coffee pot, and then wheels around and
lays out Rudy Charles with the Twist of Fate!)

Matt Hardy: That's not an acceptable answer!  I want Edge, and I want him now!
Dammit, where the hell is he?

(Security finally arrive on the scene and try to restrain Hardy as Lita tries
desperately to calm him down.)

Chris Harris nails Xavier with a sunset flip.
Earl Hebner counts: One, two, thr... kickout.
The match you scheduled apparently can't end for some reason. Therefore, we're
calling it off.

Chris Harris and Xavier battled to a draw in ::00:06.
Rating: **** 1/4
(Xavier retained the Global Heavyweight Title.)

(This probably would have been a good match, except a bug in the booking engine decided to kill it by not allowing any finishes despite a random submission by a random wrestler at a certain time being selected as the finish.  Therefore, I'm working under the assumption that Xavier and Harris battled to a double countout after a brutal 30 minute Strongstyle brawl)

Once again Xavier delivers an excellent match, this time against Chris Harris.  Though there wasn't a decisive winner this week, Harris has had his shot and sadly came up short.  Xavier will go on to face other challengers... until next week, of course, when Harris and Storm have a shot at his Tag Team Titles!

Card rating: ** 3/4

Match observations:

Match of the Evening: Chris Harris vs. Xavier

Next week, Edge and Chris Sabin team up against Prince Nana and The Undertaker.  Judging by what we've seen of these four men, this should be a hell of a brawl.

Additonally, Alex Wright will meet Deranged in a singles match, which promises to be full of high-flying goodness!

Because Doug Basham was unable to make it to this week's show, and because their match ended on a Double Count Out, Slash and New Jack vs. Doug Basham and Insane Dragon has once again been signed for next week.  Assuming no more mishaps occur, this should be a bloody brawl full of ultraviolent goodness.

Matt Hardy will team up with A-Train and Julio Dinero to take on The Amazing Red, Funaki, and Billy Gunn in a six-man tag team match.  Hardy has good reason to hate both Red and Gunn, as he's lost matches to each of them in the past two weeks.  As for A-Train and Dinero... they're out to prove that they're the real deal.  It should be intense.

Finally, America's Most Wanted gets their rematch against The Future for the Global Tag Team Titles.  Both of these teams are extremely dominant in NDW, and the rivalry between them is likely far from over.

What will happen?  We shall see!

a week of upsets is an understatement.

And Hardy's attack on Billy.. just so totally uncalled for.  Perhaps Lita should buy Matt a TV so he can watch the show to see when Edge is there or not.  ;)

It's a shame TNM got buggered in the main event.
Critic of the DawnPosted on 05/02/04 at 22:43:36

This week was just insane with upsets.  If you were an established star, this just wasn't your night.  In a way, that's a good thing.  It helps to elevate some of the newer guys and midcarders without really hurting my big names.  And it makes for interesting reading.

Yeah, well, what can you do?  I've submitted a bug report to Oliver, and he says he'll look into it.  Oddly, it doesn't create problems every time.  Basically what happens is that TNM gets stuck on a particular move.  Except sometimes it'll get unstuck and the planned finish will happen.  And sometimes it runs to a 10 hour "Something screwed up somewhere" draw.  Until it's resolved, I think I'll refrain from trying to book that kind of uncertain submission finish.  Pinfall works just fine, after all.

Hardy has something of a temper, yes.  Guess he was upset at Gunn for defeating him by DQ last week.  Understandable, I suppose.  I guess after their confrontation last week, he figured Gunn was in league with Edge.  A TV could have saved a lot of people a lot of trouble.  So could a sedative, for that matter.
