NDW Week 1 - The Big Bang

Critic_of_the_DawnPosted on 04/05/04 at 05:47:00

Like pretty much everyone else, I've been using Rick's Oldschool rules to play through a TNM7 Circuit, and have been having a great time doing so.  In order to show my appreciation, and so that I can maybe get a bit of feedback on how things are going, I decided that I'd take up some more space on the boards by posting some of my results here.

The circuit I started is called New Deal Wrestling.  Despite its name, it has nothing at all to do with the great depression or FDR's administratioin, it just seemed sort of catchy.  Unlike virtually everyone else, not only is Sting not my franchise wrestler, he's not even under contract.  I've given the franchise spot instead to Chris Sabin.  This circuit is unbooked, if anyone was wondering, although I will occasionally schedule an important match to last for an appropriate amount of time without determining who will win.

Anyway, with no further ado, here's NDW's first show which I like to call The Big Bang.

*****

Wasted Youth (Deranged and Insane Dragon) defeated
The Briscoe Bros. (Jay Briscoe and Mark Briscoe) when Deranged defeated
J. Briscoe by countout in 0:07:32.
Rating: * 1/4

Tonight started with a bang with a fastpaced match between NDW's Wasted Youth and the talented Briscoe Brothers.  While there were quite a few exciting spots in this match, there was little psychology.  Wasted youth picked up the win after the Briscoes were unable to answer the 10-count.

Jamie Noble defeated Funaki when Funaki passed out in the Trailer Hitch in
          0:15:21.
Rating: *** 1/4

What followed was an excellent Cruiserweight style match between international superstar Funaki and Jamie Noble.  This was a back and forth match, and Funaki looked likely to eke out the victory when Nidia ran in and laid him out.  Noble locked Funaki in the Trailer Hitch, and as he was unable to answer the referee after being struck by a chair, the victory was given to Noble.

The winner is Chris Hero. Time of match: 0:15:41

Chris Hero pinned Prince Nana with the Hero's Welcome in 0:15:41.
Rating: *** 3/4

Prince Nana of Ghana was obviously overconfident coming into his match with Chris Hero.  Hero made him pay for it, however, totally dominating the match against his arrogant opponent much to the crowd's delight.

Edge vs. Matt Sydal in a Falls Count Anywhere Match

Edge takes Matt Sydal down with a spinning heel kick.
The crowd is cheering on Edge.
Edge goes for a flapjack, but Matt Sydal counters it with a kneelift.

The arena is exploding in a chorus of boos.

The winner is Matt Sydal. Time of match: 0:07:08

Falls-Count-Anywhere Match:
Matt Sydal pinned Edge with the Dragon Rana in 0:07:08.
Rating: ***

One of today's most exciting up and coming superstars, Edge, was challenged to a Hardcore match by Matt Sydal, an unstable looking fellow who most of the audience was unfamiliar with.  Sydal lived up to his name, however, risking everything to gain an upset victory over Edge.  Following the match, Sydal stomped away at the battered Edge until Chris "HAIL" Sabin ran him of with a chair.  Apparently even Matt Sydal isn't suicidal enough to go up against a skilled X-Style wrestler wielding a chair.

Kevin Nash and The Undertaker and Chance Beckett and Xavier battled to a
double countout in 0:16:02.
Rating: * 1/2

Two of the most dominant big men in wrestling, Kevin Nash and the Undertaker, came out next to face the team of Xavier and Chance Beckett.  Xavier has recently been claiming that the future belonged to him, and with Beckett he hoped to prove this against the two veteran big men.  The match was thrown out, however, as both teams brawled to the back.

Matt Hardy vs. Marcos

Nick Patrick counts: One, two, three, four.
Nick Patrick counts: One, two, three.

Matt Hardy is being booed like there is no tomorrow.

The winner is Matt Hardy. Time of match: 0:10:59

Matt Hardy pinned Marcos with the Twist Of Fate in 0:10:59.
Rating: ** 3/4

Matt Hardy hit the ring and declared that the Era of Mattitude had dawned in New Deal Wrestling, and that anyone with enough attitude was welcome to come to the ring to feel his Mattitude.  This brought out Marcos, a member of the ring crew and an aspiring wrestler.  Though Marcos won the crowd's respect for his guts, Hardy took him to school, finally mercifully ending the match with a Twist of Fate.

Red executes the InfraRed on Sean O'Haire.
Red is getting a good reaction from the crowd.
Red goes for the pin.
Earl Hebner counts: One, two, three.
Red is getting a good reaction from the crowd.

Red pinned Sean O'Haire with the InfraRed in 0:12:22.
Rating: ** 1/2

By all accounts, Sean O'Haire is the future of this sport.  He's fast, has a great look, and can fly like someone half his size... or so he says, anyway.  The Amazing Red took exception to these claims and proceeded to show the audience how high flying was done, picking up the victory despite being barely half of O'Haire's size.

Your main event: Jerry "The King" Lawler vs. Chris "HAIL" Sabin

The crowd is behind Chris Sabin all the way.

Chris Sabin defeated Jerry Lawler when Jerry Lawler passed out in
a front facelock in 0:03:12.
Rating: ** 3/4

Chris Sabin came out next to loud cheers of respect from the audience.  Taking the microphone, he claimed that there was a cancer in the locker room, a force that thrived on low-brow thrills and had long since lost all respect for the sport.  This brought out the seasoned veteran Jerry "The King" Lawler, who took Sabin to school on the microphone with a series of stupid jokes, then cast aspersions on Sabin's heterosexuality.  Naturally, Chris Sabin wasn't amused, and attacked Lawler on the spot.  Earl Hebner ran down, and the impromptu match began.  It was over almost before anyone knew it, however, with Sabin choking Lawler out with a Front Facelock.

As Sabin celebrated successfully shutting the King up, he fell victim to a low blow from behind.  Lawler had just been playing 'possum!  Lawler hoisted up Chris Sabin, and was prepared to deliver a piledriver when Edge dashed into the ring and Speared Lawler's legs out from under him.  Edge and Sabin then pursued King towards the back, only to run smack into a pair of chairshots from Matt Sydal!  As the show went off the air, Lawler and Sydal stood triumphant over two of the hottest young up and comers in the business!

Match of the Evening: Chris Hero vs. Prince Nana

Next week, Jerry "The King" Lawler and Matt Sydal will meet Edge and Chris "HAIL" Sabin in a brutal First Blood match.

I read the last card so I figured I'd check this one out.  Do you have a title history of all the titles?  That'll be interesting to see.
