NDW Week 25 - Vendetta

Critic of the DawnPosted on 04/28/04 at 21:09:39

Last week was a dissappointment.  Almost all of my matches ended in disqualifications, and those that didn't were short.  Not a lot of workrate on last week's card.  Thankfully, this one was a lot stronger - the main event, in particular, was excellent.

What do you think, guys?  Should I keep NDW here on the TNM Circuits board where more people will probably see it, or petition Oliver to get my own forum to make it easier to find the old stuff?

Chris "HAIL" Sabin vs. Edge

Jerry Lawler trips Edge.
Jack Doan calls for the DQ.
The crowd erupts.

The winner is Edge. Time of match: 0:15:15

Edge defeated Chris Sabin by disqualification in 0:15:15.
Rating: *** 1/4
[Jerry Lawler interfered against Edge.]

Once again The Royal Court steps in and interrupts what could have been a classic match.  Lawler's interference cost Sabin the match, but it appeared to have Edge set up for yet another infamous Royal Court beatdown.  Lawler climbed into the ring and gestured to Edge, shouting that Sabin should take him out now while he had the chance.  Sabin looked back and forth between Edge and Lawler, then simply rolled out of the ring and walked to the back.  Lawler was understandably furious, but he spent far too long yelling after Sabin, as when he turned to leave, he walked straight into a Spear by Edge!

The ring is quickly filling up with debris.

Sean O'Haire defeated Doug Basham by disqualification in 0:03:30.
Rating: ** 1/4
[Jamie Noble interfered against Doug Basham.]

ANOTHER disqualification?  Oh dear...  At least Doug Basham earned this one honestly, as the referee decided that his continued attempts to use illegal chokes to take down his larger adversary Sean O'Haire were crossing the line and threw the match out before he had a chance to seriously injure O'Haire.

Falls-Count-Anywhere Match:
Chris Harris pinned Mark Briscoe after a backslide in 0:12:16.
Rating: ** 1/4

A Hardcore Match that ended with a Backslide?  That was... unexpected.  Not a great brawl by any means, as neither wrestler involved is exactly a master of the style, but it was decent enough for what it way.  Harris comes out on top, setting up America's Most Wanted for a very likely victory over The Briscoe Brothers.

(Jerry Lawler is backstage as a dazed Mark Briscoe makes his way towards the
locker room.)

Jerry Lawler: Hey, Mark!  Over here!

Mark Briscoe: Wha...?

Jerry Lawler: It's me!  The King!  Anyway... You did great in your match just
now, and Harris was clearly lucky in beating you... but that's besides the
point.  I need you to do something for me.

Mark Briscoe: But...

Jerry Lawler: No, seriously.  I know you're busy, but this is important!  If
you do well, you could join the group, Mark!  You want that, right?

Mark Briscoe: Well...

Jerry Lawler: Exactly.  So all you have to do is make a serious impact against
Edge... and soon!  Injure him, the sooner and the more seriously the better!
It could be your ticket to the big time, kid!

Mark Briscoe: I...

Jerry Lawler: Great.  I know you'll do fine.  Now I've got other stuff to deal
with, so I can't stay and talk.  Good luck against AMW tonight and all that
stuff.

The Future vs. "The Amazing" Red & Funaki

Chance Beckett executes the Chance Encounter on Red.
Danny Davis counts: One, two, three.
Red complains about a fast count.
Chance Beckett is being booed out of the building.

The winners are The Future. Time of match: 0:10:18

The Future (Chance Beckett and Xavier) defeated Red and Funaki when Beckett
pinned Red with the Chance Encounter in 0:10:18.
Rating: *** 3/4

The Future takes out Red and Funaki after a very solid match when Chance Beckett pinned Funaki with the Chance Encounter out of nowhere.  This victory, as well as The Future's history of victories and excellent matches, has put them in an excellent spot to compete for the Tag Team Titles, and it's quite likely that they will be awarded a shot sooner rather than later.

Special Announcement:

Against all of NDW's best efforts, the ongoing feud between The Royal Court
and Edge has not been settled.  As such, next week will feature a match
designed to ensure that one team comes out decisively on top: An 8-Man
Elimination Tag Team match.  Team Edge, consisting of Edge, The Undertaker,
Chris Hero, and Deranged will face Team Royal Court, consisting of Jerry
Lawler, Chris Sabin, Prince Nana, and Alex Wright.  In order to ensure that
there is a decision, there will be no time limit in this match!

Charles Robinson counts: One, two, three.
The crowd is on its feet cheering for The Undertaker.

The Undertaker pinned Prince Nana with the Tombstone in 0:10:19.
Rating: ** 1/4

This was an extremely one-sided match which saw the powerhouse of The Royal Court being pummeled senseless by The Undertaker, who is the largest, the strongest, and the most imposing athlete in NDW by far.  The Undertaker's victory would seem to give Team Edge a good bit of momentum leading into next week's Elimination Match.

(Wasted Youth's music hits and Deranged and Insane Dragon make their way
to the ring.)

Deranged: Since we've gotten back together, Dragon and I have done a lot of
thinking about a lot of things.  About us, about Wasted Youth, and about our
futures.

Insane Dragon: We've been a (CENSORED) institution since NDW started 6 months
ago!

Deranged: Right.  But our little problem from the past few months and the fact
that we haven't had as much success in the Tag Team ranks has us thinking.

Insane Dragon: It just isn't working.  Maybe we're too small, or maybe our
heart just ain't in it...

Deranged: But Wasted Youth has really... well... sucked.  We've decided that
we could both do better if we split our team once and for all, and tried to
build our own futures from there.

Insane Dragon: So... yeah.  Sorry, everyone.  But we'll definately keep working
together when necessary.  It ain't like we're not friends or anything.

Deranged: Right.  Friends, just not partners anymore.

Insane Dragon: Good luck to you, my friend.  Oh, and last one to win a title
has to play Grab-ass with Prince Nana!

Deranged: Dude, sick!

Insane Dragon: You're just scared that I'm gonna win.

Deranged: Am not!  You are *so* on, and you are *so* losing this bet.

Marcos vs. Jerry "The King" Lawler

The winner is Jerry Lawler. Time of match: 0:14:51

Jerry Lawler pinned Marcos with the Piledriver in 0:14:51.
Rating: ** 1/2

Lawler over Marcos.  No big surprise there, with the possible exception of how well Marcos did against his larger and more experienced foe.  This didn't save him from taking a wicked piledriver and being pinned at the hands of Lawler, however.

Insane Dragon vs. Matt Hardy

Matt Hardy whips Insane Dragon into the turnbuckle.
Insane Dragon comes back, but is met with an elbow.
Matt Hardy gets a wristlock on Insane Dragon.

Matt Hardy defeated Insane Dragon when Insane Dragon passed out in a wristlock
in 0:07:43.
Rating: ** 3/4
[The Undertaker interfered against Matt Hardy.]

Insane Dragon tried to get a good start in the singles division by challenging Matt Hardy, but Hardy proved why he's as highly ranked as he is by taking Dragon out despite interference by The Undertaker.

The Briscoe Bros. (Jay Briscoe and Mark Briscoe) when James Storm pinned
M. Briscoe after a flying forearm in 0:07:26.
Rating: ** 1/2

As expected, America's Most Wanted defeated The Briscoe Brothers by taking advantage of the fact that Mark was still in poor condition after losing his Hardcore match against Chris Harris earlier in the evening.

Deranged vs. Jamie Noble

Rudy Charles counts:  5.
Insane Dragon clobbers Jamie Noble from behind.

Rating: ** 1/2
[Insane Dragon interfered against Jamie Noble.]

Perhaps trying to help Deranged avoid the defeat that he faced against Matt Hardy, Insane Dragon helped his former partner out against Jamie Noble, only to see his interference result in a disqualification.  Oops.

Chris Hero made Alex Wright submit to an abdominal stretch in 0:41:11.
Rating: **** 1/4
(Chris Hero retained the Global Heavyweight Title.)

What a match!  Chris Hero once again delivers big time, battling for over 40 minutes in a Match of the Year Candidate against Alex Wright.  Wright actually held the advantage through most of this match, and for a long time it seemed as if victory was just a moment away.  As things wore on, however, Wright began to make mistakes.  One of these mistakes finally allowed Chris Hero to lock him in an Abdominal Stretch in the center of the ring.  After all the punishment he had already taken, Wright was unable to escape, and therefore quickly tapped out.

Card rating: ***

Match observations:

Match of the Evening: Alex Wright vs. Chris Hero

Next week things come to a boil once again when Team Edge takes on Team Royal Court in a no-time-limit 8-man Elimination Tag Team match.  Will things finally be settled in this match?  Will The Royal Court seriously injure Edge as Lawler seems to be advocating?  Who can say!  Tune in next week to find out!

As if that wasn't enough, America's Most Wanted will defend their Tag Team Titles against The Future in a Steel Cage.  These are two excellent teams, so this should be a hell of a match.

Also next week, The Victors will face Doug Basham and Insane Dragon, with the winners becoming the new top contenders for the Global Tag Team Titles.

All this, plus more of the best wrestling action anywhere is waiting next week.  Ya'll come back now, ya hear?

as far as whether you should have your own forum or not, that's up to you.  I will be reading no matter where it is.  :)

You start by saying it's gonna be better than last week and very first match ends in DQ.  Funny.  :)  But it is good for the Lawler vs Edge feud.

And a second DQ!  LOL  It's out of control.  The stars of NDW have broken your TNM!  A backslide in hardcore?!

I so want Edge to put an end to Lawler next week!  ;)

Hardy wins!  with a wristlock?  !!!

41+ minute main event!  Hero retains.. he's becoming quite the credible champion!  I can't wait for a Hardy vs Hero match, that has to be somewhere in the future!

Tag Titles in the Steel cage next week!?  cool!

/me listened to the story about the man named Jed while Scruggs and Flatt picked their banjos... So I'll be back next week for the heapin' helpin' of the hospitality!

Critic of the DawnPosted on 04/28/04 at 23:34:20

Yeah, there were a few DQs on this card, but last week ended up with virtually every match either a DQ and/or 3 minutes long, plus nothing in the ***+ range.  This week's matches were just better by a good margin, and quite of few of them were clean victories as well.

And that wasn't just any backslide, Rick.  That was an extreme backslide on the concrete floor!  It would've taken a true hardcore legend to kick out of that backslide, and Mark Briscoe is not a hardcore legend.

You should see a bit of resolution in the upcoming weeks... but perhaps not in the way that you might expect!  Stay tuned!

Hardy's victory over Insane Dragon just goes to show why Hardy is a main eventer and Insane Dragon isn't.  Even Matt Hardy's piddling weak restholds are dangerous!  And you have to believe that Matt Hardy is just as anxious for another shot at Hero as you are at seeing it.  After all, he never got a rematch after losing the title, and that's left him quite frustrated over the past month.  I wasn't expecting Hero to be a main event level player when I started the circuit, but he's definately proved that his win wasn't a fluke.

I do believe that this is The Future's first title shot - and it's well overdue, as they've got an excellent record thus far.  AMW... well, their success speaks for themselves.  No other team in NDW has held the Tag Team Titles as long as them or faced as many potent teams.  Xavier would tell you that it's only because he's never gotten a shot at the belts before, though.

Get your own forum going and post results in the circuit forum as well.  Like Rick said, we'll be readin either way.

Like I told you when he first signed, Alex Wright can put on some nice matches.  I really thought he was gonna pull an upset in that one.  I would have liked to see it, but I also want a Hero/Hardy rematch for the title.

I'm thinking Undertaker and Hardy have to be the two top contenders for the World Title.

Next week's elimination match should be nuts.  I'm gonna go out and predict Edge and The Undertaker dominate and survive.  We'll see...
Critic of the DawnPosted on 04/29/04 at 02:08:43

With regards to rankings, I'm actually going to post a Half-Year in review thingy after Week 26's card, in which I'll name the winners of the following awards:

Match of the Year:
Best Show:
Wrestler of the Year:
Top Babyface:
Top Heel:
Best Tag Team:
Top 5 Singles Rankings:
Top 5 Tag Team Rankings:
Top 5 Overall Rankings:
Best Departing Superstar:
Best Worker:
Worst Worker:
Most Charismatic:
Least Charismatic:

So you'll get a glimpse at how highly NDW's wrestlers are really ranked shortly.  You're not all that far off, however.

I was surprised by how good Wright's match was.  He's only got about a 70-75 in workrate if I recall correctly, so i wasn't expecting much.  Guess he's very carryable - and Chris Hero's high workrate and charisma help a lot with that.

Week 26's card is excellent, so I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

I think what I may end up doing is posting the results here, then moving the old threads over to the other forum when they roll off the first page.  That way I don't lose the mass audience, but my archives will be easy to find and read.
