NDW Week 21 - Cease Fire!

Critic_of_the_DawnPosted on 04/24/04 at 21:02:26

WarGames was a mixed bag in my view.  On one hand, the build to the main event was very strong, and therefore I had a great time seeing how things turned out.  But, on the other hand, the entire undercard was a little bit on the weak side because virtually all of my big names were in the main event.  The undercard felt weak, and that made me slightly less than thrilled with the card as a whole.  Still, the show must go on.

Though Mamaluke isn't under contract to NDW, after his match at WarGames against Doug Basham, he requested one more match, a chance to show what he could do when he was actually ready to wrestle.  And he got one as Basham and Mamaluke fought to a draw with one fall apiece in a 20 minute Ironman match.  This was an excellent fight which really got the crowd going for tonight's show.

James Storm after an elbowsmash in 0:10:07.
Rating: ** 1/2

The audience demanded to see another match between AMW and The Victors, and NDW was only too happy to oblige.  These two expert teams took each other to the limits once again, but again Noble and O'Haire came out on top as they isolated James Storm and eventually put him away after he had kicked out of their finisher - a drop toehold by Jamie Noble into a Superkick by O'Haire!

Rating: **

The Undertaker goes over Matt Hardy after Hardy knocked himself out during a seemingly routine Baseball slide to the outside.  The Undertaker dodged the attack, and Hardy fell out of the ring and hit his head on the stairs.  'Taker climbed back into the ring, and Hardy was counted out despite Lita's best attempts to revive Matt.

Funaki vs. Xavier

Chance Beckett hits Xavier with a flying somersault splash.
Xavier is being booed like there is no tomorrow.

Rating: ***
[Chance Beckett interfered against Xavier.]

Apparently Chance Beckett hasn't taken his recent snubbings at the hands of Xavier very well, as he interfered heavily against his friend, eventually allowing Funaki to pick up a victory over him when he hit a high flying move on the outside, knocking Xavier silly as the crowd went crazy.

disqualification in 0:03:13.
Rating: ** 1/4
[Jerry Lawler interfered against Insane Dragon.]

Wasted Youth worked excellently together against The Royal Court, and it seemed likely that they would eventually wear down their larger foes when Jerry "The King" Lawler ambushed Insane Dragon from behind and choked him out with his sling.  The match was immediately awarded to Wasted Youth via disqualification, and Deranged saved his friend with a timely plancha onto The Royal Court, allowing Wasted Youth to escape a greater beatdown.

"The Amazing" Red vs. "Mr. Showtime" Chance Beckett

Red hits the Red Star Press on Chance Beckett.
Red hits the Red Star Press on Chance Beckett.

Danny Davis counts: One, two, three.
The crowd is going into a frenzy.

The winner is Red. Time of match: 0:06:55

Red pinned Chance Beckett after the Red Star Press in 0:06:55.
Rating: *** 3/4

The Amazing Red takes it to Chance Beckett, giving "Mr. Showtime" no respect for his earlier action against Xavier, even though it did favor his friend Funaki.  Business is business for Red, apparently.  Red picked up the win quite abruptly after being dominated for the entire match when he hit back to back Red Star Presses on Beckett.  Ouch!

(Kevin Nash's music hits, and the big man walks slowly to the ring with a
pronounced limp.  The crowd boos him loudly, but he holds up a hand.)

Kevin Nash: Hold on...  There's plenty of time for that.  This is serious.
Last week during the WarGames match, I re-aggravated my old quad injury.  The
Doctors tell me it isn't serious... yet... but that if I keep wrestling like
this, I'll have permanant damage before the end of the month.  So, after a lot
of thought and soul searching... I've decided that I have no choice but to
retire while I still have the ability to walk.

(The crowd breaks into a song which a certain Royal Court member might think
was written about him.)

Kevin Nash: ...Yeah, I guess I sort of deserve that.  Before I go, I want to
thank everybody in the back.  It's been a pleasure working with all of you.
Especially you, Undertaker.  We might not have seen eye to eye, but I respect
you like nothing else.  So... thank you everyone.  Thanks for the opportunity
to entertain you, thanks for the opportunity to compete here... Just... thank
you for everything.

(Kevin Nash ambles out of the ring for the last time and pauses at the ring
entrance, looking back to the crowd one last time.  He holds up his arms, the
crowd pops one last time... and he steps through the curtain.)

Marcos pinned Jay Briscoe with the Tilt-a-Whirl Inverted DDT in 0:00:58.
Rating: **

Marcos came out on top with a quick Tilt-A-Whirl Inverted DDT out of nowhere on Jay Briscoe in this rematch from last week.

(Insane Dragon and Deranged are sitting together in the locker room packing up
their things for the evening.)

Insane Dragon: Hey, Deranged.  Before we go.  I just wanted to say thank you.
For not giving up on me when I was being a jackass, and for being there for
me when The Royal Court tried to get me.  The way I behaved, I don't deserve
friends as good as you.

Deranged: Don't worry about it, Dragon.  I knew you'd come around eventually,
and with all we've been through... this was nothing.  Water under the bridge,
man.  Now... about the Tag Team Titles...

Mark Briscoe vs. Edge

Mark Briscoe goes for a forearm smash, but Edge blocks it.
Jay Briscoe throws Mark Briscoe a frying pan, but Edge intercepts it.
Edge hits Mark Briscoe with it and goes for the pin.

The winner is Edge. Time of match: 0:13:43

Edge pinned Mark Briscoe after hitting him with a frying pan in 0:13:43.
Rating: * 1/2
[Jay Briscoe interfered against Edge.]

Edge took out Mark Briscoe after interference by Jay backfired.  Jay tried to pass a frying pan to Mark, but Edge intercepted it and brained Mark with it to pick up an easy pinfall victory.

(Jamie Noble, Sean O'Haire, and Nidia are all backstage together celebrating
their victory with beer.)

Jamie Noble: That's three straight times we beat AMW, boy!  We are the kings
of the tag team division again.  Hell... that gives me an idea...

(Noble takes a drink of beer, then climbs onto a steel chair and stretches out
his arms while staring into the distance.)

Jamie Noble: Lookit me, Nidia!  I'm King of the World!  Like that DiCaprio boy!

(Nidia giggles while Sean O'Haire rolls his eyes.)

Sean O'Haire: That's all well and good, Noble, but there are other teams, good
teams, that we still have to face.  Wasted Youth, for one.  Hero and Marcos for
another.  Funaki and Red...  We've got quite a few teams to prepare for, and-

(Jamie Noble cuts him off with another cry.)

Jamie Noble: I'm King of the World!  That's right!  But I ain't tellin' ya'll
nothin' you ain't already know!

Sean O'Haire: That's my line, kid.  And I think you've had enough...

The winner is Chris Hero. Time of match: 0:08:18

Chris Hero pinned Mark Briscoe with the Hero's Welcome in 0:08:18.
Rating: ** 1/2
(Chris Hero retained the Global Heavyweight Title.)

After his victory in WarGames last week, it was decided that Chris Hero would not have to defend his Global Heavyweight Title after all.  That didn't stop him from coming out and issuing an open challenge to anyone who wanted a shot, however.  His challenge was answered after just a few moments by a very groggy looking Mark Briscoe, who was quickly overcome by Chris Hero, but not before he got some decent offense of his own in.  Hero finally picked up the victory with the Hero's Welcome to a loud ovation from the crowd.

Card rating: ** 1/4

Match observations:

Match of the Evening: Chance Beckett vs. Red

Another card is on the books, and another show is on the horizons.

Next week will see The Victors defending their Tag Team Titles against The Royal Court's Prince Nana and Chris Sabin.  Neither of these teams is much liked by the fans, but both are widely respected, so it should be a hell of a match.

Also next week, America's Most Wanted will team up against Xavier and Chance Beckett, The Future.  After Beckett's attack on Xavier this week and their competitive nature in recent weeks, can both members of The Future coexist?  If not, this will be one heck of a short match.

All this, plus Jerry "The King" Lawler will be returning from his injury!  Tune in to see what happens!

Lawler's ambush was classic heel there.  And the Chance Beckett vs Xavier angle is a very interesting one.

But best of all... Jamie "By God" Noble had me laughing when he stole O'Haire's catchphrase!
Critic_of_the_DawnPosted on 04/25/04 at 07:47:02

Of course, it could be said that Lawler himself is very much the classic heel.  I've got nothing but good things to say about how well he's been doing in his role as one of my circuit's top heels.  Obviously he isn't great in the ring, but with The Royal Court at his side, he doesn't have to be.  And he's back from his elbow injury next week.  Good thing.  The show has missed him.

Beckett and Xavier could be quite interesting, yes.  You might be surprised by what happens in next week's tag team match...

As for Noble stealing O'Haire's catchphrase...  I had a lot of fun writing that one.  Noble is a great talker and capable of being a really funny guy, so the short scene with him drunk and goofing off (much to his more serious partner's chagrin) more or less wrote itself.

Doug Basham in NDW is really more the result of my randomness policy (I select all of the wrestlers I hire randomly through the m key in a seperate circuit so I can filter out guys I definately *don't* want but still preserve unpredictability) than of any concrete plans I've got for him at this point, but as he's a solid young talent, I feel like he fits in pretty well with the majority of the NDW roster.
