NDW Week 19 - The Final Countdown

Critic_of_the_DawnPosted on 04/22/04 at 22:16:02

This is probably one of the biggest and strongest cards I've had thus far, and with WarGames next week, NDW is on quite a roll.  The most noteworthy event of last week was The Victors stunning... er... victory over America's Most Wanted for the Global Tag Team Titles.  As you'll no doubt see, today's card is just as eventful.

The winner is Chris Sabin. Time of match: 0:08:27

No-Countout-Match:
Chris Sabin defeated Edge by disqualification in 0:08:27.
Rating: ***
[Deranged interfered against Chris Sabin.]

Nothing was solved in our opening match, as Deranged got Edge disqualified before either man could seriously hurt the other.  Sabin was momentarily pleased by his victory, but a Spear from Edge cut his celebration short.

Prince Nana vs. A mystery opponent

And... it's Alex Wright!  Das Wunderkind is here in NDW!

The winner is Alex Wright. Time of match: 0:04:45

Alex Wright defeated Prince Nana by disqualification in 0:04:45.
Rating: 3/4*

Prince Nana came out to face a new NDW talent... and was faced by "Das Wunderkind" Alex Wright!  Wright took it to Nana in this match, and Nana quickly resorted to a chokehold out of desperation.  When he refused to break the choke, he was disqualified and the win was given to Alex Wright!  What a debut!

"The Amazing" Red & Funaki vs. Prince Nana & Mark Briscoe

Funaki throws Prince Nana into the guardrail.
Funaki executes a kick to the head on Prince Nana.

The verdict: A DOUBLE COUNTOUT !

Red and Funaki and Prince Nana and Mark Briscoe battled to a double countout in
0:07:14.
Rating: **
(Jay Briscoe no-showed.)

Jay Briscoe was ill this week with a severe flu, so Prince Nana took his place in this Tag Team match against Funaki & Red.  Little was solved, however, as Nana and Funaki brawled out of the ring and to the back and were therefore counted out.

Insane Dragon vs. Deranged

The winner is Deranged. Time of match: 0:04:57

Deranged pinned Insane Dragon with the Blueprint in 0:04:57.
Rating: *

Deranged has finally had enough of Insane Dragon's goading, and he requested this match over the weekend to shut him up.  Turns out he did just that, totally dominating in his exchange with the Dragon until he could score with a quick Blueprint for the victory.

(Edge makes his way out to the ring with a microphone.)

Edge: Greetings to all the Edgeheads in the audience!  As you know, next week
I'll be taking care of the Royal Court once and for all in a brutal WarGames
match.  Last week I introduced you to the core of my team, America's Most
Wanted.  I'm pleased to announce that I've found the last two men I need to
create the most dominant team in professional wrestling.  First, the man from
the dark side himself, The Undertaker!  And last but not least, the man who has
taken the NDW champ to his limits time after time, the indominatiable Chris
Hero!  With myself, Chris Harris, James Storm, The Undertaker, and Chris Hero
all working together, we can crush any team that The Royal Court puts together
with ease!

Xavier vs. "Mr. Showtime" Chance Beckett

Xavier climbs back into the ring.
Chance Beckett executes the Chance Encounter on Xavier.
Earl Hebner counts: One, two, three.
Xavier complains about a fast count.
The crowd is going into a frenzy.

The winner is Chance Beckett. Time of match: 0:11:17

Chance Beckett pinned Xavier with the Chance Encounter in 0:11:17.
Rating: *** 1/2

Friendly competition between the members of THe Future gets out of hand when Chance Beckett pulls out an upset and goes over heavily favored Xavier!  Xavier looked shocked by this, and as Beckett offered his hand to shake, Xavier turned away and left the ring in disgust.  Looks like trouble in paradise for yet another team in NDW...

(The Royal Court's music hits and Lawler, Sabin, and Nana make their way to the
ring.)

Jerry Lawler: Hi everybody!  I just thought I'd tell all of you plebeians not
to get too excited about Team Edge's chances, because we've put together a
much stronger group.  Not only have I smoothed things over with Nash to the
point that he's willing to join our team, I've recruited the most dominant
wrestler in NDW Today... The Global Heavyweight Champion, Matt Hardy!  Woohoo!
So anyway, like I said, don't get your hopes up, because The Royal Court has
got this one in the bag already!

America's Most Wanted vs. The Victors for the Global Tag Team Titles

Sean O'Haire gets a sleeperhold on Chris Harris.
Chris Harris is writhing in pain.

The winners are The Victors. Time of match: 0:33:20

The Victors (Jamie Noble and Sean O'Haire) defeated
America's Most Wanted (James Storm and Chris Harris) when O'Haire made C. Harris
submit to a sleeperhold in 0:33:20.
Rating: *** 1/4
(The Victors retained the Global Tag Team Titles.)

The Victors defeat America's Most Wanted again in a 30 minute spectacle!  This match, unlike last week, was all O'Haire.  Sean's size and strength made him just too powerful for AMW to take out, allowing him to escape first the Eight Second Ride, then the Catatonic with ease before locking Harris in a sleeperhold and forcing him to tap out.  What a match!

"The Dead Man" The Undertaker vs. "Big Sexy" Kevin Nash

Kevin Nash sets up The Undertaker on the table.
Kevin Nash executes the Jackknife Power Bomb through the table.
The table is broken in half.

The crowd is vociferously booing Kevin Nash.

The winner is Kevin Nash. Time of match: 0:15:43

Kevin Nash pinned The Undertaker after a choke lift in 0:15:43.
Rating: * 3/4

Kevin Nash brutalizes The Undertaker once again, but then, he needed to!  The Undertaker had already kicked out of the Jackknife Power Bomb, so Nash was forced to resort to extreme measures - another power bomb through a table, a low blow, and a choke before grabbing the ropes for the victory.

(Matt Hardy can be seen in the lockerroom taping his wrists for his upcoming
title defense against Chris Hero.)

Matt Hardy: I'm almost ready to show Hero that his earlier victories were
nothing more than a freak Twist of Fate...

Voice from off-camera: He's a pretty tough competitor, Matt.  Are you sure
you can take him?

Matt Hardy: Don't forget, I have Mattitude on my side!  What does Hero have?
The fans?  I'll take you in my corner over them any day of the week!

(Lita walks into the shot with a grin.)

Lita: That's really sweet of you, Matt.  Now come on.  We've got to be ready
to utterly humiliate him, and talking isn't doing that.

Matt Hardy: I never refuse a woman with Mattitude!

The winner is Jerry Lawler. Time of match: 0:03:02

Jerry Lawler pinned Marcos after hitting him with a keyboard in 0:03:02.
Jerry Lawler suffered an elbow injury. He will be out for approximately 2 cards.
Rating: * 3/4
[Chris Sabin interfered against Marcos.]

What's this?  Jerry Lawler apparently aggravated an old elbow injury in the process of squashing Marcos.  Luckily, quick thinking by Chris Sabin resulted in a victory anyway.  However, trainers have confirmed that Jerry "The King" Lawler will be unable to compete at next week's WarGames match!  That leaves Chris Sabin in charge, and with the unenviable task of finding someone to fill in for Lawler in less than a week!

Match with Special Referee Prince Nana:
Chris Hero made Matt Hardy submit to the STF in 0:38:55.
Rating: *****
(Chris Hero won the Global Heavyweight Title.)

Here is your winner... and NEW Global Heavyweight Champion... CHRIS HERO!

Match of the Year!  Hardy and Hero exchange finishers and pin attempts for nearly 40 minutes before Hero finally gets the advantage, locking in the STF and once again forcing Matt Hardy to tap out to it!  Lita involved herself in this one, but in the end it wasn't enough to save the match for her man.  Even Prince Nana proved to be a nonfactor, as his attempts to screw Hero met with failure time after time, and ultimately he couldn't ignore a tap out in the middle of the ring.  Matt Hardy's lengthy reign with the Global Heavyweight Title is finally over!

Chris Hero holds the belt high as the fans give both men a spontaneous standing ovation as we go off the air!

Card rating: ** 3/4

Match observations:

Match of the Evening: Chris Hero vs. Matt Hardy

WarGames.  The name itself is enough to strike fear into the hearts of many wrestlers.  Bodies have been broken in this match, and it's quite possible that they will be broken once again next week.  Team Edge vs. Team Royal Court will be inside the big cage next week!  Tune in to see what happens!

Also next week: Deranged will take on Insane Dragon once again, this time in a Ladder Match.  Will Dragon's ego reign supreme, or can Deranged bring him back to his senses?

More debuts and action are sure to be waiting, so tune in to find out what happens!

Lawler ducking Edge in the WarGames!  What a way to do it!  :)

Ad Hero is your NEW Champ!  poor Hardy ... just as he was starting to get on a roll!
TecmoNickPosted on 04/23/04 at 03:07:48

I was thinking the same thing, Lawler running from Edge.  That will just make their fued last even longer until they can finally get in the ring and settle things.

I was shocked to see Hardy lose, but what a match.  With Lawler out and Hardy losing the title, the momentum is on the hand's of Team Edge going into WarGames.

As for Alex Wright, that's not so bad.  I have used him before and he can put on some nice matches.
