NDW Week 17 - A Lover's Quarrel

Critic_of_the_DawnPosted on 04/20/04 at 18:48:25

As events rapidly move toward WarGames, things are really heating up.  Though no teams have yet been formed, and the match hasn't even been announced yet, you can probably guess who will be on the teams based on high profile feuds, etc.  I could give you guys a hint... but that would be too easy.

I was a bit dissappointed by how short Week 16's card was, but luckily that brief slump seems to be over, as this week was a much stronger card.

*****

The Royal Court (Prince Nana & Chris "HAIL" Sabin) vs. Deranged & Funaki

Deranged leaves the ring.
Prince Nana whips Funaki into the ropes, but Funaki reverses it.

Deranged and Funaki defeated The Royal Court (Chris Sabin and Prince Nana) when
Funaki pinned Nana after a crucifix in 0:03:01.
Rating: ***

Funaki and Deranged pick up a quick win out of nowhere over The Royal Court!  Prince Nana and Chris Sabin were both infuriated, but before they could beat on their smaller opponents, Edge ran them off with a steel chair in hand!  What a start to the evening!

The crowd is on its feet cheering for Chris Hero.

The winner is Chris Hero. Time of match: 0:13:23

Chris Hero defeated Insane Dragon by disqualification in 0:13:23.
Rating: **

Insane Dragon lost his temper again this evening and threw the referee out of the ring when he failed to put Chris Hero away with an impressive Asai Moonsault Bodyblock.  It took the ref several minutes to revive, but once he did, he immediately awarded the match to Hero, much to Dragon's dismay.  For all of his ego, Insane Dragon has been doing very poorly since his Battle Royal win several months ago.

Xavier vs. Marcos

Xavier gives the sign for the Kiss Your X Goodbye.
Xavier executes the Kiss Your X Goodbye on Marcos.

The winner is Xavier. Time of match: 0:12:06

Xavier pinned Marcos with the Kiss Your X Goodbye in 0:12:06.
Rating: ** 3/4

Marcos put on a hell of a fight here, and the crowd was solidly behind him as he hit the Tilt-A-Whirl Inverted DDT, but Xavier somehow kicked out and battled back.  After several more tense minutes of fighting, Marcos was forced to Kiss His X Goodbye by the talented Xavier.

(As the match ends, the camera moves backstage, where Mark Briscoe is apparently
having a very involved conversation with Prince Nana about something.  We can't
make out exactly what's being said, but they seem to be getting along well.  As
the camera moves closer to get a clearer idea of what might be going on, Mark
Briscoe catches sight of it.)

Mark Briscoe: Hey!  Get that camera out of here!  This is a private
conversation!

(Prince Nana gets in the cameraman's face and shoves him out the door as we
cut to a commercial.)

The Victors vs. America's Most Wanted

James Storm runs into the ropes.
Nidia trips James Storm.
Mike Chioda disqualifies The Victors.
The crowd is behind James Storm all the way.

America's Most Wanted (James Storm and Chris Harris) defeated
The Victors (Jamie Noble and Sean O'Haire) when James Storm defeated Noble by
disqualification in 0:14:28.
Rating: ***
[Nidia interfered against James Storm.]

There's no question in my mind that The Victors were on course for a win in this match.  They dominated AMW as Harris and Storm haven't been dominated since coming into NDW, and only the referee's sharp eyes saved them from a defeat.  With such a strong showing, The Victors may be in line for a title shot soon!

Edge vs. Jerry "The King" Lawler

Jerry Lawler throws Edge out of the ring.
Jerry Lawler rolls out under the bottom rope.
Jerry Lawler is being booed out of the building.

Jerry Lawler is being booed out of the building.

Jerry Lawler pinned Edge with the Piledriver in 0:13:46.
Rating: ***

The King picks up the victory over Edge in an excellent back and forth match.  The crowd was wild for this match, and with good reason - Edge's troubles with Lawler are rapidly becoming legendary inside of New Deal Wrestling.  Lawler used every trick in the book to gain the advantage in this match, and after a beat down on the outside of the ring, he was able to spike Edge with a Piledriver for the victory!

"The Dead Man" The Undertaker vs. "Mr. Showtime" Chance Beckett

Chance Beckett sends The Undertaker into the turnbuckle.
Chance Beckett charges into the corner, but The Undertaker moves out of the way.

The Undertaker gives the sign for the Tombstone.

The winner is The Undertaker. Time of match: 0:18:28

The Undertaker pinned Chance Beckett with the Tombstone in 0:18:28.
Rating: ***

Very strong showing by Chance Beckett.  Beckett was literally seconds from a victory, when an elementary mistake allowed The Undertaker to scoop him up, then bring him back down with the Tombstone.

(As a very battered Undertaker makes his way to the back, Nash emerges from a
door in the hallway and strikes him hard in the gut with a steel chair!  The
Undertaker staggers.)

Kevin Nash: I told you this wasn't over, Undertaker.  I'm just getting started!

(Before Undertaker can recover, Nash hoists him up... Jackknife Power Bomb
through a conveniently placed table!  The Undertaker is out cold and bleeding
bad!)

Kevin Nash: I suggest you get your backside out of NDW, or you really will be
a dead man by the time I get done with you!

The winner is Jay Briscoe. Time of match: 0:06:36

Jay Briscoe pinned Red after a vertical facebuster in 0:06:36.
Rating: ***

Jay Briscoe beats The Amazing Red in a quick bout.  Red fought well, but Jay simply overpowered him, and was thus able to take him down with a stiff Vertical Facebuster.

Lita vs. Matt Hardy for the Global Heavyweight Title

Matt Hardy runs into the ropes.
Matt Hardy hits Lita with a clothesline.
Matt Hardy uses a clothesline on Lita.
Matt Hardy gives the sign for the Twist Of Fate.

The winner is Matt Hardy. Time of match: 0:17:29

Matt Hardy pinned Lita with the Twist Of Fate in 0:17:29.
Rating: ***
(Matt Hardy retained the Global Heavyweight Title.)

Matt Hardy goes over his girlfriend here to retain the Global Heavyweight Title.  This was a surprisingly competitive match, and it looked like Lita might actually become the first woman to win a World Title when she hit the Moonsault on Hardy.  Hardy kicked out, however, and in short order he took her down with the Twist of Fate.

Following the match, Hardy helped Lita up... and for once, he didn't take his vanquished opponent down with the Twist of Fate.  Instead, the two kissed as the crowd cheered!  Does this signal a new direction for Matt Hardy?  Or is it possible that even bastards sometimes end up with the girl?  We are out of time, so tune in next week to find out!

Card rating: ***

Match observations:

Match of the Evening: Matt Hardy vs. Lita

Rumor has it that Edge is extremely upset at his defeat at the hands of Jerry Lawler.  As this feud spirals out of control, it's clear that something will have to give!  Tune in next week to see how things shape up!

Also next week, Prince Nana will meet Funaki in an attempt to avenge his defeat at the hands of the Japanese superstar.  Who will come out on top?

Finally, after their impressive showing tonight, The Victors will get a shot at AMW's Tag Team Titles.  Can Noble and O'Haire regain the gold, or will America's Most Wanted continue to rule the Tag Team division?  Tune in next week to find out!

Awesome main event, I had a feeling Lita would do well.

Nidia is really screwing up a lot of Noble's matches.  Next week should be a big match for the Victors, and if she screws up there title shot I would expect Noble to lose it.
Critic_of_the_DawnPosted on 04/20/04 at 21:19:22

Lita has done a lot better than I expected when TNM gave her to me.  It's fairly immaterial, however, as she chose not to renew her contract , so this is the last time you'll see her in competition in NDW - at least for the time being.

I think I'm going to turn Nidia's interference rating down a bit.  It's to the point where she really does end up costing Noble more matches than she helps him win.  If she costs him his shot at the Tag Team Titles, he might just snap and put her in the Trailer Hitch, and if he doesn't, O'Haire might take matters into his own hands...

Yet another good NDW showing.  I can't wait for Lawler vs Edge in the WarGames ;)  Someone's gonna bleed really bad in THAT one.

Nice to see that Nash didn't forget the Taker.

Critic_of_the_DawnPosted on 04/21/04 at 03:32:32

From this point until WarGames, I've been very happy with the results of my cards.  Suffice it to say that things get shaken up nicely, and that there's going to be quite a bit of bleeding before the Big Cage is taken down.

Nash and 'Taker are just getting started.  By the time they're through with each other, who knows how much will be left of them?  ;D
