NDW Week 10 - A New Challenger

Critic_of_the_DawnPosted on 04/13/04 at 20:44:43

I'm very happy with Matt Hardy as a champion thus far.  He's managed to defeat The Undertaker twice in a row, which does a hell of a lot to build up both his credibility and that of the belt.  He's consistently having great matches as well.

My Tag Team champs aren't quite as wonderful, however.  While they're extremely dominant and thus bringing lots of credibility to the title, they're not having exceptional matches with anyone and aren't really getting over as much as I might have hoped.  This has made me a bit impatient to see them lose the titles to a more deserving duo, but then again, that desire to see them lose makes watching their matches more exciting.  So... even though they're faces in NDW, they're heels to me.

Anyway, here's the card.

Rating: **** 1/4
[Xavier interfered against Chris Sabin.]

Jamie Noble picked up the win after an excellent match against the highly favored Chris "HAIL" Sabin.  Though Sabin survived the dreaded Trailer Hitch for a long minute bofore fighting free, he was eventually locked in an armbar that he no longer had the strength to escape and was forced to tap out.  Xavier involved himself in the match as well, attempting to pass Noble a fire extinguisher to use on Sabin.  Following the match, Xavier stood over Sabin, shouting down at him that only he deserved a title shot, and that this was what happened when he stuck his nose where it didn't belong.

Next week, Matt Hardy will defend his title against Jamie Noble.

[Matt Sydal interfered against Edge.]

Global Heavyweight Champion Matt Hardy defeated his longtime rival Edge in about 11 minutes in a non-title match with the Twist of Fate.  Matt Sydal played a factor in the verdict, however, striking Edge in the back with a chair and allowing Hardy to gain the upper hand.

(Nearly a minute after Matt Hardy has left the ring, Edge stirs and grabs a
microphone.)

Edge: Sydal, this thing between you and I has gone on long enough.  I have
never been as serious as I am today... You and I are going to settle this feud
once and for all.  Next week, you and I are going to have one last match.  In
that match, a singles match with The Royal Court barred from ringside, there
will be only one winner.  The winner wins the right to stay here in New Deal
Wrestling.  The loser leaves.  If you really think you're that much better than
me... prove it.

Deranged pinned Funaki after a standing moonsault in 0:13:34.
Rating: ** 1/4
(Red no-showed.)

Wasted Youth worked well as a unit here, although how much of that is due to them being on the same page and how much due to Funaki and O'Haire not being normal partners isn't clear.  What is clear is that after the match Insane Dragon seemed peeved that Deranged picked up the win, and left the ring without joining him in his celebration.

Chris Hero vs. "Mr. Showtime" Chance Beckett

Rating: ***

Chris Hero defeats Chance Beckett in a solid match.  The tide turned when Hero hit the Hero's Welcome on the outside of the ring, then rolled Beckett back in and hit it once more for the victory.

[Daizee Haze interfered against The Undertaker.]

The Collosal Connection picks up a win here over The Royal Court in a brutal match.

(As Prince Nana helps a stunned Matt Sydal to the back, Jerry Lawler grabs a
microphone.)

Jerry Lawler: Hey Edge.  I know you're somewhere in the back, so wipe that grin
from your huge-chinned face for a few minutes and listen to me.  Now you've
been a thorn in the side of The Royal Court ever since we formed, Edge.  And
now you've offered us a chance to get rid of you.  All we have to do is give
you a match against Sydal, the man who has beaten you twice in singles matches.
I think you've got a deal, Edge.  But I suggest you have a farewell speech
memorized, because there's no way Sydal can lose against you.

Match observations:

Match of the evening: Jamie Noble vs. Chris Sabin

Next week Matt Hardy faces his newest challenger, the former Tag Team Champion and the master of the Trailer Hitch, Jamie Noble.  Noble has thus far proven himself to be one of New Deal Wrestling's most dangerous competitors, and Hardy has successfully taken on all challengers for his title.  This match between the two should be a classic.

Also next week, Matt Sydal will face Edge in a Loser Leaves Town Match.  Regardless of who wins, the face of New Deal Wrestling will be changed forever.  Tune in next week to find out how!
