NDW Week 9 - With Great Power...

Critic_of_the_DawnPosted on 04/13/04 at 06:02:06

Matt Hardy as the winner of my tournament came as quite a surprise to me, but in retrospect I think that it was a good thing.  Hardy has been dominant in the midcard up until this point, and was just one night away from being elevated to the main event.  That night came on Week 8's tournament, when he defeated NDW's franchise Chris Sabin, Royal Court leader Jerry Lawler, and finally The Undertaker to capture the Global Heavyweight Title.  As if that wasn't enough, he managed to capture the gold in a ****1/2 Match of the Year Candidate.  Any doubts that I had about Hardy's chances are gone.  I expect him to go far.

The Briscoe Bros. (Jay Briscoe and Mark Briscoe) defeated Red and Funaki when
M. Briscoe pinned Red with the Cutthroat Suplex in 0:04:21.
Rating: ***
[Jerry Lawler interfered against Red.]

The Briscoe Brothers became the top contenders for the Global Tag Team titles after a handy assist from Jerry "The King" Lawler and a steel chair.  That meant that next week, America's Most Wanted will defend their Tag Team Gold against the young and hungry duo of Mark and Jay Briscoe!

"Wildcat" Chris Harris vs. "Sir" Matt Sydal

Chris Harris runs into the ropes.
Daizee Haze pulls down the top rope.
Rudy Charles disqualifies Matt Sydal.
There are lots of chants for Chris Harris.

The winner is Chris Harris. Time of match: 0:00:58

Chris Harris defeated Matt Sydal by disqualification in 0:00:58.
Rating: **
[Daizee Haze interfered against Chris Harris.]

This match ended in a DQ loss for Matt Sydal before it even really began.  Sydal used his normal tactics to take the fight to Chris Harris, but Daizee Haze involved herself by pulling down the top rope, leaving Harris stunned on the concrete floor.  Jerry Lawler wass waiting there, and before he could recover, he delivered a vicious Piledriver to Harris onto the concrete.

Given the events of this match and Lawler's involvement in the Tag Team Title contendership match, could there be some connection between The Royal Court and The Briscoe Brothers?

Chris "HAIL" Sabin vs. Insane Dragon

Chris Sabin throws Insane Dragon out of the ring.
Mike Sparks counts: one, Chris Sabin distracts Mike Sparks.
Edge hits Insane Dragon with the Edgecution.
Quite a few boos are audible.

The winner is Chris Sabin. Time of match: 0:05:16

Chris Sabin defeated Insane Dragon by countout in 0:05:16.
Rating: * 3/4
[Edge interfered against Insane Dragon.]

Insane Dragon made his way to the ring with quite an attitude once again, disrespecting his opponent in the Tournament last week, Edge and claiming to be the next big thing in professional wrestling.  This brought out Chris "HAIL" Sabin, who took it to the young but talented Insane Dragon.  Edge apparently took exception to Dragon's words as well, hitting him with the Edgecution on the outside in an attempt to teach him some respect.  As the Referee didn't see it, Insane Dragon was counted out.

(Wasted Youth's music hits and Deranged makes his way to the ring with a
microphone, stopping before where Insane Dragon lies stunned on the concrete
floor.)

Deranged: Dragon... Man, we've got to talk.  I don't know what's gotten into
you, but since you won that Battle Royal, there's just been somethin' not right
in your head, ya know?

Insane Dragon: Shut up...  You're just jealous that I'm that much better than
you...  I'm the future of this sport, Deranged!

Deranged: Nobody is denying you're a great wrestler, Dragon.  But if ya keep
actin' like this, you're gonna keep pissin' people off!  C'mon, man.  Pull your
shit together!  We're Wasted Youth, Dragon!  One of the hottest tag teams out
there.  And if we work at it, I know we can win the Tag Team Titles.

Insane Dragon: Of course we can win the titles.  You've got me on your side.
Now, here's what we've got to do...

(Fade out)

Chance Beckett, Prince Nana, and Edge wrestled a brutal Triple Threat match which saw Beckett pull out the victory by hitting his Chance Encounter out of nowhere on The Royal Court's Prince Nana.

The Victors (Jamie Noble and Sean O'Haire) defeated Chris Hero and Marcos when
Noble pinned Hero after a crucifix in 0:11:12.
Rating: ** 3/4

The Victors pick up the win over Hero and Marcos when Noble used a crucifix to pin Chris Hero.  Hero had just tagged out to Marcos, but the referee apparently didn't see it, leaving Chris Hero and Marcos to become the latest victims to the impressive power of Sean O'Haire and the technical skills of Jamie Noble.

Matt Hardy pinned The Undertaker after an inverted DDT in 0:31:30.
Rating: **** 1/4
(Matt Hardy retained the Global Heavyweight Title.)

Here is your winner... and STIIIIIILL Global Heavyweight Champion... Matt Hardy!

Absolutely brutal match.  The Undertaker beat Matt Hardy from pillar to post, and it took all of Hardy's resolve to survive the assault from the big man.  The ropes were Matt Hardy's friends in this match, as he was able to grab them time after time, frustrating both The Undertaker and the audience, who were excited at the prospect of Matt Hardy getting what he deserved for his attitude... or should I say Mattitude?

Matt Hardy eventually turned the tide, however, pinning The Undertaker with an inverted DDT after the Twist of Fate initially failed.

Card rating: ***

Match of the evening: The Undertaker vs. Matt Hardy

Matt Hardy has proven that his victory wasn't just a fluke by successfully fending off the powerful Undertaker after both had had a week to rest and recuperate from the hellacious Tournament last week.  The challenge is just beginning for Matt Hardy, however, as a Number One Contender's match will be held next week to determine the next challenger that he must face.  Who will it be?  There's only one way to find out!

Also, in next week's Main Event, America's Most Wanted will defend their Tag Team Gold against The Briscoe Brothers.  Both of these teams are well known as excellent pairings with bright futures in this business, and next week they will have a chance to prove it with the Global Tag Team Titles on the line!

What else will happen?  What does Kevin Nash think of his partner's singles run?  What interest, if any, does The Royal Court have in the outcome of the Briscoes/AMW match?  Tune in next week to find out!

What a match between Undertaker ans Hardy.  I guess Hardy is proving quickly that he is going to be a fighting champion, which is exactly what you want.  I'm a little dissapointed that Edge and Jerry Lawler are getting beaten around, because those are guys I want to see in your main events.  But you can only work with what TNM gives you.  Nice circuit so far...
Critic_of_the_DawnPosted on 04/13/04 at 20:26:23

Matt Hardy is a hell of a fighting champion.  He's performing extremely well in my circuit, which is good because I like him.  In the coming weeks I'm going to work on giving him more of a storyline.

As for Edge and Lawler...  That's perfectly understandable.  Unfortunately, The Royal Court and Edge & Sabin are so busy fighting each other that they haveen't had much time to concentrate on any titles.  Give it time.  I'm sure that you'll see them in some main events sooner or later.  They definately deserve it.

Your Edge vs Lawler sounds like my nWo vs Dudleys.  You think nWo would try to get themselves a champion or something in BCW.  I love that Hardy is dominating in your fed as it's not what one would expect to happen.
