NDW Week 7 - Over The Top

Critic_of_the_DawnPosted on 04/10/04 at 22:20:22

Coming into this week, there was quite a bit going on that I tried to take account of.  Jamie Noble had, in one week, lost both the Tag Team Titles and his shot at qualifying for the Tournament.  Additionally the newly formed Royal Court would be greatly strengthened if Prince Nana were to win the Battle Royal and enter the Tournament as well.  Speaking of the Battle Royal, there were a few wrestlers I had picked as favorites going into the match.  In particular, I was expecting that the winner would probably be one of Kevin Nash, Xavier, or Prince Nana.  As you'll see, I was obviously surprised by how things turned out.

America's Most Wanted (James Storm and Chris Harris) defeated
Chance Beckett and Jerry Lawler when C. Harris pinned Beckett after a spear in
          0:08:38.
Rating: ** 1/2
(Xavier no-showed.)

Xavier had not arrived at the arena by the time his scheduled match with Chance Beckett against America's Most Wanted had begun, but luckily Beckett was able to find a capable partner in Jerry "The King" Lawler in exchange for a favor to be named later.  AMW took the victory, however, when Chris Harris speared down Beckett.

"The Dead Man" The Undertaker vs. Prince Nana

The Undertaker runs into the ropes.
Prince Nana misses with an elbow.
Prince Nana hits a butt-bump on The Undertaker.
Prince Nana executes the Elevated DDT on The Undertaker.

Prince Nana pinned The Undertaker with the Elevated DDT in 0:08:03.
Rating: ***
[Matt Sydal interfered against The Undertaker.]

Prince Nana defeats the heavily favored Undertaker with an assist from The Royal Court and the Elevated DDT.  Following the match, The Royal Court entered the ring and gestured to Nana, shouting that he would be the winner of the evening's Battle Royal, and that the title would inevitably rest around the waist of a Royal Court member.

Insane Dragon vs. Jamie Noble

Jamie Noble whips Insane Dragon into the guardrail.
Nidia comes from behind, but Insane Dragon nails Nidia.
Jamie Noble takes Insane Dragon down with a tiger driver.

Jamie Noble made Insane Dragon submit to the Trailer Hitch in 0:12:03.
Rating: ****
[Deranged interfered against Jamie Noble.]

Excellent Cruiserweight style match between the always innovative Insane Dragon and the dependable Jamie Noble.  Dragon submits to the Trailer Hitch, which is rapidly becoming the most feared hold in New Deal Wrestling.

(Following his victory, Jamie Noble grabs a microphone)

Jamie Noble: Sean O'Haire, you get out here, boy!

(O'Haire's music hits, and he makes his way to the ring.)

Jamie Noble: You done a really stupid thing two weeks back, boy.  You agreed to
defend our Tag Team Titles - the ones we worked so hard to win - against AMW
the same night that I had a match against Undertaker.  Undertaker, boy!  What
kind of fool are you?

Sean O'Haire: Jamie... I'm sorry.  I wasn't thinking clearly, and I just wanted
to prove to those two assholes that we were the best.  I guess we weren't...

Jamie Noble: Ya'll don't even think about thinkin' like that now, boy!  We're
the best by far, I was just distracted that night what with the two matches an'
all.  So long as you're sorry, I ain't got a problem with you.  Now, let's get
ready to win that Battle Royal, boy!

Matt Hardy uses the ropes for leverage.
Jack Doan counts: One, two, three.
Numerous fans are using Matt Hardy for target practice.

The winners are Matt Hardy and Matt Sydal. Time of match: 0:17:26

Matt Hardy picks up the victory here after a beatdown outside of the ring.  He rolled a battered Sabin back into the ring and was able to pick up the pin by using the ropes for leverage.  This loss doesn't bode well for Edge and Sabin's chances in the Tournament next week.

Sean O'HHaire vs. Kevin Nash

Sean O'Haire catches Kevin Nash in a boot choke.
Rudy Charles warns Sean O'Haire to let go.

What a surprise!  After an excellent job in the Battle Royal, and despite heavy interference by The Royal Court on behalf of Prince Nana, Insane Dragon tossed out "Wildcat" Chris Harris and eliminated the final obstacle on his quest to enter the tournament.  Everyone involved fought hard, but in the end there could be only one, and everyone else went Over The Top.

Here are stats for the eliminations in the Battle Royal:

Deranged: 1 (Jay Briscoe)
Chris Hero: 1 (Chris Hero)
Funaki: 1 (Marcos)
Chris Harris: 1 (Prince Nana)
Prince Nana: 2 (Chris Hero, Xavier)
Jamie Noble: 4 (Kevin Nash, James Storm, Sean O'Haire, Mark Briscoe)
Insane Dragon: 4 (Chance Beckett, Jamie Noble, Funaki, Chris Harris)

We should be able to see the fallout from this Battle Royal over the next few weeks, but for the time being, remember to tune in next week when the Global Heavyweight Champion will finally be crowned in a tournament of NDW's top stars!

Card rating: ** 1/2

Match observations:

Match of the evening: Jamie Noble vs. Insane Dragon

Next week a tournament consisting of Edge, Chris Sabin, Jerry Lawler, Matt Sydal, The Undertaker, Red, Matt Hardy, and Insane Dragon will be held, with the winner receiving the coveted Global Heavyweight Title.  It will surely be a night to remember, so be sure to tune it.

See you soon!

Insane Dragon?!?!

And Noble throws out O'Haire!  YES!  Furthering the possible feud!

And a LOT of outside interference in the match!  I can't say I've ever seen THAT much interference in one match before.
Critic_of_the_DawnPosted on 04/11/04 at 05:27:03

Insane Dragon!?!

That's about what I thought when he came out on top.  From my understanding, he's a spot machine from the east coast with an exceptionally lousy look and very little to reccomend him as anything more than a tag team wrestler or member of the lower midcard.  But he put on such a solid showing in the Battle Royal that I really don't have an excuse not to do something with him.

Heh.  Aside from AMW, which is undefeated to this point, I don't know that I have a single tag team which hasn't had some sign of dissention within its ranks.  Noble and O'Haire have plenty to feud over, but my roster is presently face-heavy, so it'll have to wait a bit.

As for the amount of outside interference... that's a side effect of the easter egg allowing you to book it, and me telling the Royal Court to interfere against EVERYONE who wasn't Prince Nana.  Sadly, it didn't seem to help Nana enough for him to get the win.  Nana in the tournament would have been great.  Insane Dragon is... less so.

Unless he wins the tournament and the title.  :)

And that would be a HUGE upset I'm sure!
