NDW Week 5 - Road to the Title

Critic_of_the_DawnPosted on 04/08/04 at 20:07:40

I was impressed by the way that Rick handled his singles tournament in his BCW circuit, but unfortunately something as complicated as multiple round robins just wasn't in the cards for my circuit.  I did, however, like the idea he used to automatically seed the people who had generally main evented his shows in the tournament without requiring them to qualify.  Therefore, I swiped that little gimmick and made it my own.

Here for you now is Week 5 of New Deal Wrestling.

*****

As has been rumored, there will be a tourament held in the upcoming weeks to
crown the first Global Heavyweight Champion.  New Deal Wrestling executives
have thought long and hard about who is to be involved, and we believe we have
come up with an acceptable plan.

Due to their high-profile interactions in the last few weeks, Chris Sabin,
Edge, Jerry Lawler, and Matt Sydal have all been seeded in the tournament as
follows:

Edge
vs.
TBA

Matt Sydal
vs.
TBA

Jerry Lawler
vs.
TBA

Chris Sabin
vs.
TBA

The remaining slots will be filled in upcoming weeks. Three matches have been
compiled based on NDW's present rankings.  The winners of these matches will
be entered into the tournament.  One of these matches will be held this week,
and two next week.  The matches are as follows:

Matt Hardy vs. Deranged
Prince Nana vs. Red
Jamie Noble vs. The Undertaker

To ensure that everyone has a fair shot, everyone who has not been entered into
the tournament will be entered into a Battle Royal in two weeks, with the
winner receiving the final spot in the tournament.

Thank you, and enjoy the evening's wrestling.

The Briscoe Brothers upset the Collosal Connection!  Kevin Nash and the Undertaker both look irate at the decision... and...  Chokeslam to Jay!  Jacknife Power Bomb to Mark!  The crowd pops for the moral victory, but these two veterans will need to do a lot more if they want a shot at the title.

Rating: * 3/4
[Matt Sydal interfered against Funaki.]

Funaki fared well against Prince Nana here, due partly to the fact that he caught the ringbell as Matt Sydal tried to pass it to Nana.  However, in the end it wasn't enough, and Nana was able to use his size advantage to trap Funaki in a headlock he couldn't escape, leaving Funaki no choice but to submit.

(Red can be seen backstage watching the match between Prince Nana and Funaki
intently, noting the importance of watching his back for attacks by The Royal
Court and the fact that he will have to use his speed to stay on top of the
larger athlete.  When Funaki is trapped in the headlock, Red gets to his feet
and heads to the ring, forcing Nana to finally release the hold and helping his
friend to the back.)

The Future (Chance Beckett and Xavier) defeated Chris Hero and Marcos when
Beckett pinned Hero with the Chance Encounter in 0:11:06.
Rating: *** 1/2

The Future once again goes over Chris Hero and his running buddy Marcos.  The match was fairly even until Chance Beckett hit his devestating Chance Encounter out of nowhere for the pin over Chris Hero.

The Victors (Jamie Noble and Sean O'Haire) when James Storm defeated Noble by
disqualification in 0:07:15.
Rating: **
[Nidia interfered against James Storm.]

A very competitive match between America's Most Wanted and The Victors, but NIdia's interference brought it to an abrupt end.

(Referees seperate the two teams as the match abruptly ends in a
disqualification.  Chris Harris grabs a microphone and calls after the Victors
as they begin to walk back up the entranceway.)

Chris Harris: Wait!  O'Haire!  Get your ass back here!  We need to talk to you.

(After a brief discussion, Noble and Nidia continue toward the back and O'Haire
returns warily to the ring.)

Sean O'Haire: What do you want, Harris?

James Storm: What *we* want, O'Haire, is your tag team title belts.  They
belong around the waists of a real tag team, not a couple of rejects who were
put together for a tournament!  So, next week, we want a shot at those belts
of yours!

Sean O'Haire: Is that so?  Well, I suppose we do need to defend our gold...
You're on... but don't expect a victory.  As a team, Noble and I are
unstoppable.  But hey...  I'm not telling you anything that you don't already
know.

Edge complains about a fast count.
Numerous fans are using Matt Sydal for target practice.

Matt Sydal pinned Edge with the Dragon Rana in 0:07:20.
Rating: *** 3/4

Once again, "Sir" Matt Sydal goes over Edge with relative ease.  Edge has a fairly large size advantage over Sydal, but Sydal's quickness and unpredictability makes him virtually impossible to catch.  Edge eats a Dragon Rana, and a fast three later Sydal walks away with another victory.

Card rating: ** 3/4

Match of the evening: Matt Sydal vs. Edge

Incensed at Matt Sydal gaining another victory, Edge has challenged him to another match, one that he knows quite well: A Ladder Match!  Tune in next week to see who comes out on top... literally!

Also next week, America's Most Wanted will take on The Victors for the tag team titles!  This should be quite an exciting match.

Additionally, there will be two more qualifying matches: Prince Nana vs. Red and Jamie Noble vs. The Undertaker.  The Royal Court is not to be underestimated, so Red will have quite a challenge in front of him.  Additionally, Jamie Noble will be competing in two very important matches next week, and you can bet that he won't be happy with Sean O'Haire for putting him in that position!

Tune in next week to see what happens!

Another good card.  Looking foward to seeing the final World Title brackets.  Jamie Noble vs. The Undertaker should be good next week.  Also, really looking foward to the ladder match.

Once again Nash and Undertaker look like chumps.  I'm telling you, they are going to force you to break them up... ;)

This is probably my favorite circuit to read, keep it coming...
Critic_of_the_DawnPosted on 04/09/04 at 04:47:37

If you really can't wait to find out the brackets, they're posted in a reply to one of Rick's Rules Sets.  I'd be interested to know who you expect to finally walk away with the gold.

With regards to The Collosal Connection looking like chumps, tell me about it.  I keep trying to set things up so they can prove themselves worthy of a shot, but they keep choking.  That's one of the interesting challenges in running an unbooked circuit.  I really don't want to break these guys up yet, but when I finally get around to it they're going to have plenty of reason to do so, especially with 'Taker getting a Qualifying Match and Nash being overlooked.

So far, Jamie Noble has been my most consistent wrestler, and he's been rewarded for it with a fairly significant role in the company.  Jamie Noble is NDW's Chris Benoit, essentially.
