NDW Week 3 - Fallout

Critic_of_the_DawnPosted on 04/06/04 at 20:53:32

I was obviously a little surprised when my tag team title tournament went to a no-contest last week.  However, given the fact that the rules stipulated a rematch this week, I decided against continuing the match in order to build some intrigue as to how things would turn out.

I was initially dismayed when I randomly selected Jerry Lawler as one of my roster members - after all, he's way past his prime and is more than a little stale on Raw.  That's when I decided to turn him into a nasty oldschool heel and see how it worked.  So far, I haven't been dissappointed.  Anyway, enjoy the show.

Jay Briscoe pinned Insane Dragon with the J-Driller in 0:06:06.
Rating: *** 1/2

Jay Briscoe started things out by pinning Wasted Youth member Insane Dragon with his patented J-Driller.  By the end of the match, the fans were exploding with boos directed toward this young up and comer.

Mark Briscoe pinned Red with the Cutthroat Suplex in 0:08:46.
Rating: ** 1/4

The Briscoe Brothers go 2 and 0 tonight when Mark takes down The Amazing Red with his brutal Cutthroat Suplex.

(As Red is helped to the back, The Undertaker and Kevin Nash make their way out
to the ring.)

Kevin Nash: Last week, our opponents got really lucky against us.  The fact
remains that they won, though.  But, ah... if you think The Collosal Connection
is done, you've got another think coming.  The two of us are out here to issue
an open challenge.  Any team, anywhere... if you think you've got what it takes
to top the Collosal Connection, then come on.  Give us your best shot.

The Undertaker: And when you rest in peace... we will be one step closer to
gaining the titles that are rightfully ours.

The Collosal Connection (Kevin Nash and The Undertaker) and
James Storm and Chris Harris battled to a draw in 0:20:00.
Rating: * 1/2

What a surprise!  The team of Chris Harris and James Storm, America's Most Wanted answered the challenge of Nash and 'Taker.  AMW is one of the hottest young tag teams today, and they showed it by taking The Collosal Connection to their limit.  In the end, these two excellent teams battled to a dissappointing Time Limit draw.

Chris "HAIL" Sabin vs. Matt Sydal

They lock up.

a backward kick.

The winner is Chris Sabin. Time of match: 0:00:32

Chris Sabin defeated Matt Sydal by disqualification in 0:00:32.
Rating: *
[Daizee Haze interfered against Chris Sabin.]

This match barely even got started when Sydal's lovely (if slightly stoned-looking) valet, Daizee Haze, pulled down the top rope.  Despite being DQ'ed, Sydal didn't quit, leaping onto the fallen Chris Sabin with a suicide dive and beating him silly until Edge ran him off.

The winner is Marcos. Time of match: 0:07:23

Marcos pinned Chance Beckett with the Tilt-a-Whirl Inverted DDT in 0:07:23.
Rating: ***

Marcos wins!  Marcos wins!  Marcos wins!  The inexperienced grappler and former member of the ring crew proved that he has what it takes by upsetting Canadian Blue Chipper Chance Beckett and picking up the win with a Tilt-A-Whirl DDT out of nowhere!  Xavier, watching from the back, was stunned by his close friend's defeat.

Jerry "The King" Lawler vs. Edge

Jerry Lawler goes for a series of jabs, but Edge blocks it.

Jerry Lawler pinned Edge after a flying fistdrop in 0:15:26.
Rating: *** 1/2

Lawler got a measure of revenge by pinning Edge with his Flying Fistdrop.  Edge, however, was simply giving Lawler a dose of his own medicine.  When Lawler turned to leave the ring, he received a spear right to the gut, followed by the Edgecution.  After several minutes, Matt Sydal appeared along with several referees to help Lawler to the back.

Chris Hero vs. Xavier

Chris Hero hits a clothesline on Xavier.
Chris Hero uses a jawbreaker on Xavier.
Chris Hero goes for a double underhook suplex, but Xavier counters it with
a backdrop.
In turn, Chris Hero counters it with a sunset flip.

Xavier is starting to get under the crowd's skin.

The winner is Xavier. Time of match: 0:16:26

Xavier defeated Chris Hero by disqualification in 0:16:26.
Rating: ** 1/2

Xavier came out hoping to show his friend and frequent partner Chance Beckett "How it's done."  Unfortuantely, Chris Hero took him to school, and though Xavier was determined, it looked like only a matter of time before Hero would pick up the victory.  Hero made a cardinal mistake, however, when he shoved the referee after a very close count, thus getting himself disqualified.

(Following the match, Xavier is out of breath but irate.)

Xavier: God dammit!  I almost had Hero.  Referee, restart the match now!  I
want to finish him off!

(The referee refuses)

Xavier: Well, I ain't going anywhere until I get a chance to show just how good
I am!  I'm not mo-

A small "Funaki" chant is being started.

The winner is Funaki. Time of match: 0:02:57

Funaki defeated Xavier by countout in 0:02:57.
Rating: * 1/4

This just wasn't Xavier's night.  Though he started off the match fairly dominant, Funaki managed to come back and clothesline him out of the ring.  As he fell, Xavier's head hit the barricade, and he was thus unable to return to the ring.  Oops.  Looks like a countout victory for Funaki!

Mike Chioda counts: One, two, three.
The chants for Deranged are deafening.

The winner is Deranged. Time of match: 0:07:33

Deranged pinned Trent Acid with the Blueprint in 0:07:33.
Rating: ** 1/2

Deranged came out looking for a fight, and he got one as local tag team star Trent Acid came out against him.  Though Deranged was at a considerable size disadvantage, he was able to pull out the victory nonetheless with what he calls the Blueprint, a high speed sunset flip bomb.

(Jamie Noble and Sean O'Haire won the Global Tag Team Titles.)
[Nidia interfered against Matt Hardy.]

Here are your winners, and NEW GLOBAL TAG TEAM CHAMPIONS... Jamie Noble and Sean O'Haire!

The match was extremely well worked, and the crowd was hot throughout.  Hardy and Nana took the first fall by taking down Noble with the Twist of Fate.  Noble and O'Haire came back to win the second when Noble forced Nana to tap out to the Trailer Hitch.  The final fall was full of drama and excitement.  As it came to a close, Noble locked Matt Hardy into the Trailer Hitch.  Hardy tried to crawl to the ropes, but was unable, and after more than 30 seconds in the lethal submission hold, he was forced to tap out.

Card rating: ** 1/2

Match of the evening: Matt Hardy and Prince Nana vs. Jamie Noble and Sean
O'Haire

Lawler and Sydal have challenged Edge and Sabin to another tag team match next
week, promising that it will be quite the night to remember for them.  Edge has
accepted on the behalf of the battered Chris Sabin, claiming that no matter the
stipulation, they will easily defeat the King and his accomplice once again.

With Tag Team Champions crowned, there's already some talk of crowning a
singles champion.  Look for the entire roster to try to prove their worthiness
of such a title in the upcoming days!  With a system of titles in place, it
should become less common to see Lawler and company intentionally allowing
themselves to be pinned in order to inflict a beatdown on their foes.

Until next week, thanks for watching.

Good work Eric.  I applaud that you went with week 2's results in the main event instead of continuing the match to crown a champ.  And I do this cause it's exactly what happened in my BCW on week 2.  :)
TecmoNickPosted on 04/07/04 at 02:32:00

I really like this group of wrestlers.  Having Lawler as a mega-heel works real well.  I'm not too big on Taker and Nash together, but it may grow on me...

Thanks to both of you for your feedback.

Good work Eric.  I applaud that you went with week 2's results in the main event instead of continuing the match to crown a champ.  And I do this cause it's exactly what happened in my BCW on week 2.  :)
I've read all of your cards, so I expect that the fact that you had a similar situation might have played a part in inspiring me to run with things as well.  On one hand, this feels a bit like a bait and switch to me, but on the other I want to remain consistent with my rules, even if it ends up being inconvenient for me.

I really like this group of wrestlers.  Having Lawler as a mega-heel works real well.  I'm not too big on Taker and Nash together, but it may grow on me...
I just hit M a bunch of times and then wrote down the names it spit out.   ;D  But thank you.  I'm happy that I didn't end up with the same 20 wrestlers everybody has a tendency to use.  Gives my circuit a chance to be different and to build some new stars.

As for Nash and 'Taker...  Considering that they're the two biggest guys in my circuit by a large margin, and that half of my roster is apparently under 200 pounds, I was faced with an interesting dilemma.  Not only were Nash and 'Taker the biggest sizewise, they were the biggest names on my circuit.  So I could either stick them in the main event or give them a prominent role on the undercard.  I figured that teaming them up would give them a common purpose and, more importantly, keep them away from my singles title for the time being.  If nothing else, they're an interesting anachronism in my tag team division.  Wasted Youth, for example, have a combined weight of about 290 pounds.  Nash and Taker are 625.

And yes, Lawler is great.  He's an excellent cocky, manipulative, evil bastard heel.  He won't win any awards for his matches at this point in his career, but his ***1/2 match against Edge shows that he can be carried to a pretty solid match.  More importantly, he's just believable in the role of over the hill veteran doing his best to keep the young guys down.  As for Matt Sydal, I've never heard of the guy.  He's a generic cruiserweight high-flyer from the independents who I basically gave the gimmick of "Little guy who is crazy enough that he's a danger to his larger foes."  It amuses me that Lawler's heavy... isn't.

The random roster worked out well, I'm going to have to try that idea.  I've been wanting to post a circuit on here for a while now, but creating a quality roster is always a problem for me.

I understand why putting Nash and Taker together was really one of the only ways you could go.  It could always lead to a break up, and a fued between the two.  Which was kind of already hinted at with Nash getting pissed at Taker...
Critic_of_the_DawnPosted on 04/07/04 at 06:47:59

Well, it also helps when the people on your roster are guys you've at least heard of.  Otherwise you end up with Cannonball Grizzlys and Lizmarks running around and no particular idea of what to do with 'em.  ;D

As for Nash and Taker breaking up... eventually, perhaps.  But they only just got together.  The problem with such a breakup is that once the resulting feud is done, I've got 2 300 pound guys who every wrestling fan has heard of gunning for the title in a promotion full of 180 pounders.  So I'm in no hurry to pull the trigger on this.  There's plenty of dissention between the faces and the heels already without the Collosal Connection exploding.  ;)
